What does being black in America mean to you?

CNN visited several Historically Black Colleges and Universities recently as part of the network's Black in America series. Students were given the opportunity to speak out and let the world know what it means to be black in America.

The response has been fantastic, from creative short films to candid video confessionals. Superstar iReporter JFletch reached out to others to explore what it means to be black in America. Tiff86 describes being black in America as "an overwhelming experience." You can find all of the Black in America iReports here . Which submissions stand out to you?

Hi, I am a white 60 yr. old female. I live in the south.I was raised in a black neighborhood, my best friend was black. Alot of the neighbors that were black didn't have alot to do with me, but i never noticed. I ate at my friends house, i never thought about it , but she never ate at ours, and she was asked. My parents were good friends with all our neighbors, it seemed as though my dad or mom one was always going to help one of the families, but I only remember 1 time that 1 black lady did our laundry, my mother was sick.  I have lots of black friends, i see no difference in skin color, but for some reason I have no trust in Obama.  I won't vote for him. i won't vote republican either.  I like and trust Hillary.  Our economy did well during the Clinton years, ours was terrible under Reagan, and the Bushes. Please think and most of all pray before you vote, let GOD lead you.  HAPPY MAY DAY!

I am aganst letting the illegal aliens stay in America, no matter what! I think they need to get here like all the others. Apply for their citizenship.  I have a niece that came here and was adopted by by by brother and his wife.  she was 2 when she came to America.  She had to speak english, know her abc,s, and count in english before she got her citizenship.  She got it, but she worked hard for a 2 yr. old. I think all people wanting their citizenship should have to go through the same channels. There is a co. in our town and one man that buys property and sales it or rents to aliens, mostly illegal, and no one cares. If they are illegal, send them back where they come from til they apply for  their rights to citizenship, no free anything, til it's recieved. We have people here in America, children and adults because they can't get insurance or meds, and some can't get foodstamps, but hispanics can and they get their soc. sec. #'s  and it doesn't maatter if these numbers belong to them or not.  Free e.r.. care while American citizens get sued, if they can't pay their e.r. bills. THIS IS NOT FAIR TO US. I don't think illegals should be mistreated, just dent home. I don't think the illegals  should be able to come to America and take our jobs and our companies move to other countries for cheap labor... this is not fair to them or us!!! I don't think any of the goverment listens to (WE THE PEOPLE),especially the sick, disabled and elderly. (THE POOR AND CAN"T HELP THEMSELVES PEOPLE) People should  not be mistreated, but I also don't think there should be a difference shown  in aliens, and give them anything and everything and let our people do without, just because it is an election year. REMEMBER TODAY IS NATIONAL PRAYER DAY!!!!!

Good for you slick nick and we deserve more than a try. I am a 24 year old sexy, motivated African American female. And Being black in America means this to me: Courage, Strength, Motivation, Strive, hope, prayers. Those are all the things we as African Americans have to have to survive in these days, or things we need like prayers. Some of us really need prayer, but overall we are good people that love to enjoy life. All that we have been through, you would think others would give us a little more respect..

Subject:  HOW IRONIC! .. Hilary's pastor convicted of molestation

What goes around----

When the Rev. William Procanick put his hand on the Bible during his sex-abuse trial in Oneida County Court earlier this year, he swore to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth.  But as the former Clinton Pastor was sentenced Friday to three years in prison for inappropriately touching a 7-year-old girl at his home last March, Judge Michael L. Dwyer said Procanick Sacrificed his honesty the day he testified.

Okay, so now that Bill and Hillary Clinton's pastor has been convicted of child molestation, will we see the same furor directed at Hillary that Obama has had to endure these last few weeks???

Then you need to email this article to everyone you know.  Here the CLINTON'S Pastor is convicted of child Molestation. So, if Obama bears the guilt for his pastor's comment; then Hillary has to be equally tainted by this man's crimes.

            Please keep this email going!

Reverend Wright was thereason Hillary never dropped out of the race. I have first had information that she knew he was coming out. I need to call the FBI or someone. I am not certain to to call to report it. Do you know where I would begin?

I fail to understand the need to categorize Americans. Our country has been divided into Red vs Blue, Doves vs Hawks, Liberals vs Conservatives, Citizens vs Illegal Immigrants, Muslims and Blacks vs Everyone Else.  Why?

The divisiveness can only harm us.  It does not contribute to our freedom, nor does it enhance our individuality.  We are, as a nation, becoming more like bickering children and less like a world-class power.

The media contribute to this destructive situation; I'm quite convinced much of it has been contrived by them.   Why else would an obviously racist program like 'Black in America' be promoted?  Why not Native Americans in America?  Fourth Generation Italians in America?   Blondes in America?

Better yet, why not PATRIOTS IN AMERICA?  It seems this group is the true minority  and desperately in need of support and positive media coverage.

I agree that the ultimate desire of many is to witness a racially equal America. Although that is not our reality, it's nice to imagine, isn't it? I believe that the base or foundation of getting to this diversely unified existence is for non-white (Black,Hispanic,Asian etc.)citizens to treat each other with the respect that is expected from Caucasian-Americans.

I think that "Black" America especially, has to set the terms and standards for their on race by loving and respecting each other. I think that "Black" people have become content with the repetitive display of physical violence, and verbal abuse that is displayed toward each other.

Even when I try to disect the reasoning behind "Black" people calling themselves the "N" word, I fail to come up with a logical explaination. To use a word that "Blacks" have faught for so long to do away with and for many to have loss their lives in the midst of, only bestows the disregard and self-hate for ourselves. And, in turn, opens the door of invitation to be disrespected by other races.

No, I don't think that "Black" Americans are treated (as a whole) equally as "White" Americans. But, I also think that "Black" people are too fast to point the finger and post the blame at others to somehow justify or down-play their own misfortunes or misdeeds. When will the "change" come? Short question...long answer. Before "Black" people can began expecting reporations for the lack of equality we are so quick to acknowledge, we must first salvage and repair the damage that has already torn the roots of our unification within.   jeebs1707 Pennsauken, N.J.

Jeebs, Really a Afro-American now can not truly speak on reporations we deserve becuase you nor I lived through what our ancestors lived through. Don't begin to allow those who keep society divided manipulate what brought black people to this point.  Have you ever read the Willie Lynch letter? That is one of the main reasons we don't understand unity or self-love.

I hear alot about this "struggle" blacks have to deal with, that was way back when, now days it matters what kind of person you are no matter what color. Education has alot to do with getting a good job, and you have to want to work. I know lots of blacks around my small town that have very good jobs and i know alot of blacks, whites, mexicans etc that are lazy. I can tell you about "struggling" i work 2 jobs and my wife works and we still "struggle". So for all you ppl that say society is against you then your just being self centered. oh ya i'm white. peace

I had a chance to view thirty minutes of Black in America at the Ice Chatham Movie theatre. I was so glad that my ten year old son and nephew was with me. I think this is a documentary that should be a part of the school curriculum. My son didn't understand everything, but with me by his side, I could explain what was going on. I hope we send more emails and text message others to view this! I was glad my friend emailed me to tell me about it!

Being "Black" in America means alot to me. It means that as a people, we have came a long way from being sold as cattle and considered 1/3 of a human being to being able to be President of the United States. It also means that we have to work a little harder than the majority. There are still White Americans who think less of me because of the color of my skin. We have to work harder to stop epidemics in disease and in crime and arrests. Being black also means pride. We have a rich history not only in the United States, but in the land of our descendents in Africa. In one sentence, being Black in America to me means we have, we are and we shall overcome.

Michelle Obama is proud to be a black American who cares about the black communities in need for financial help, so why is she trying to be white, consistently spending money to have her and her two daughters hair straightened?
