In Florida there is a majority republican papulation which has control of what happens within the state.  We as minority democrats have no control on the decision on the change of the primary date.  We are being punished for what the republican party government has done.  My question is How can you declear victory knowing that there are 2 states not being counted and how come you did not support Sen. Hillary Clinton in gettin our votes to be counted?

Sincerely,

Would you consider adopting France health care system?

I think the government should take control of the health care just like how they are responsible for the security of the country. Good luck Obama.

This week is National Nurses' Week, perfect time to talk about the nursing shortage crisis which is becoming worse as the Baby Boomers retire. The average age of nursing faculty is 54 which is creating a major nursing faculty shortage crisis as well. Although many qualified students apply to nursing schools across the country, there are not enough faculty to teach them. Over the past several years, the President and Congress continued to steadily decrease funding for the Nurse Reinvestment Act. Many of my faculty colleagues are in the process of going to school for doctoral degrees out of state at great personal cost and sacrifice because there is no funding. It is difficult to find faculty because academia does not pay well compared to clinical institutions. My undergraduate students find themselves in similar situations, working full-time with families and attending school full-time. What can you suggest for this problem?

If Barack Obama really wants to bring us all together, why did it take him so long to disown Jeremiah Wright for accusing the United States of "inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color"?  In a formal March 14, 2008 release issued via Huffington Post, Obama acknowledged that this viciously divisive blood libel and other videotaped Wright hatemongering

"first came to my attention ... at the beginning of my campaign."  That was way back in February 2007, and at the time Obama not only failed to denounce Wright publicly, but didn't even take issue with him privately.  As Wright himself recalled in a March 5, 2007 New York Times interview, Obama just telephoned and told him: "You can get kind of rough in your sermons, so what we've decided is that it's best for you not to be out there in public."

I believe that the majority of non-white voters in America are not ready for a Black President, experienced or inexperienced.  What is your message to the White Democratic voters that are pro-Hillary Clinton, and saying that they are going to vote for McCain if you become the Democratic nominee?

I am a 35 year old middle school Algebra teacher in Southern California. I definitely am concerned with the "big issues" such as mortgages, economy, gas prices, war, borders, etc. but my questions focus on the issues that I see in my work place and across the country that affect my students and my 12 year old daughter on a daily basis.

As president, what can Obama do to help our country with the type of content we hear on the radio and see on television (foul language, content, etc.) and what can Obama do as president to help with violence, gangs, tagging, etc. that cost the taxpayers so much money and cause so many problems for our young generation?

Kids are growing up TOO FAST in this day and age and I believe more censorship is needed as well as less violence so that my daghter and students can play outside and grow up as we did in the 70's and 80's?

Tagging was unusual in my area and now, it's everywhere. Children should not have to look at their country with such disgust!

Thank you!

I'm curious as to what happens to the delegates previously committed to Sen. Edwards? Can he designate them to other candidates? Also, I feel you should hammer on the responsibility of Florida and Michigan to accept the consequenses of their deciding to change their primary dates even though the DNC told them those delegates would not be seated or vote at the convention. Changing the rules now is just another way of saying behavior has no consequences.

I am a Clinton supporter that will more than likely vote for McCain unless Sen Obama can explain to me and many others like me why it is more important for him to say he is African American then White which he is 50%.  This is a race card that should not have been played and has become the sore point of his campaign.  Since 90 plus percent of african americans are voting for him which is another race card.  Again why should white Clinton supporters like myself support him when he has decided for this election it is more important to be black then white?  He has not lost me yet but his answer or lack of answer could lose me.

I am a Clinton Supporter, I don't understand  why senator Obama always wait  for  Senator  Clinton  to make a statement in other  for him to attack her instead of telling the public in a clear language  what  he is going to do for the masses. I just graduated from school, senator clinton has stated how she is going to handle the issue of Financial aid. What Does senator Obama want to do about this issue? he attacked senator clinton gas tax break, the  issue on Iran but he was not precice  on what he is going to do, either  long time or short time. I think we  need  a radical leader who is more agressive in handling  critical situation, I have not seen this in senator obama. If Obama  will contest against McCain, I think he need to be more aggressive. I have  not decided  whether  I will vote  for Obama or not if he win the  democrat nominee. I think there are a lot of republican in Obamas camp, they just want him to win the  democrat nominee so that he can be defeated by John Mccain. If Obama win the Nominee, it create a better chance  for republican to win the general election.

Question for Senator Barak Obama

Dear Senator Obama,

In the course of human history people who engaged in peacemaking have been often misunderstood, persecuted, subjected to ridicule, murdered, and even crucified     ( e.g.  Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Itzak Rabin, Jimmy Carter, and Jesus Christ to cite only a few). You have declared a willingness to have dialogue and meet with enemies who threaten the United States. In pursuing this objective are you committed to being a real peacemaker, and are you willing to risk incurring the wrath, hatred, criticisms, and abuses of people who choose the path of confrontation, retaliation, or aggression as opposed to extending a hand of friendship to enemies of this country?

The Bush administration has done some disturbing things in its 7+ years in power, many of which have been chronicled. They fall into the following categories:

1. Attempts to take power away from the judicial and legislative branches of government.

2. Appointments to government agencies of incompetent and/or unsuitable individuals from industry (eg. FEMA, EPA, Energy).

3. Breaking the constitution and/or duly enacted laws (eg. using signing statements).

4. Violating the human and civil rights of people, including American citizens.

5. Conducting its operations with excessive secrecy.

My questions to Mr. Obama are 1.What will you do to reverse these transgressions during your own presidency ?,and 2.Do you have any ideas on how to prevent future administrations from abusing their power?

I have watched most of the debates and have not seen these issues addressed.

Senator Obama,

There's been some chatter about your Vice-presidential running mate.  Personally, I'm one who thinks its a good idea to offer the position to the looser of our primary races.

Have you considered the possibility of selecting a running mate who would bring strong military experience to the top of our ticket in November?  A young retired military officer, man or women, well-decorated with some political savvy and who could impart to our active and veteran military that they ARE a priority for your administration; that we do and we will take care of our troops; that we are serious about bringing our troops out of Iraq.

You must be tougher than many seem to admit.  You have gone up against Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, John McCain, FOX "news", the Republican party and their 527 machine and, I'm sorry to mention, your own former "pastor."  To me, referring to you as an underdog is an understatement.

Why would you want to be the leader of a divided and polarized nation of people?  Will you articulate a "higher calling" for Americans in such a way that we could set aside individual and group self-interests?

Senator Obama, you have been painted as out of touch with the "blue collar" and "white women over 50" crowds. It seems as if you have been shaking hands with people in small venues and town hall situations. Why have you not acknowledged VERBALLY that you understand the obvious disconnect between you and these demographics, and outline specifically what you've done in Illinois for these groups. In doing so you would take the teeth out of your opponents' argument that you are out of touch and elitist.

What is your position on drilling for oil in Alaska? It will cost taxpayers a lot of money to build the necessary roads and support systems to accommodate the workers and the process can take as much as 10 years. Most experts agree the oil there will only supply us for 2 years at the most. Other than "forming a commission to look at the issue" what is your stance? Thank you.

i would like to ask Senator Obama why I should vote for him in November? I caucused in the state of Iowa for Senator Clinton. At the time of making up my mind it was not that I did not like Obama but I happen to see him at the Iowa State Fair. I asked simply asked him to sign one baseball. It was just me and him walk down the sidewalk. The Senator refused and told me I was going to sale it on ebay. Senator Clinton signed one for me. I happen to collect all the candidate and every other candidate signed one. I have never sold autographs on ebay. So why should I vote for him? Finally it took my dad to take the baseball and asked him. I think since he was older and said he was going to the caucus is the only reason he end up signing it. It raises the question of character how I was treated at the Iowa State Fair. For this a Clinton supporter and Democrat will most likely be voing for John McCain.

Wolf, Hi there.

Ask Senator Obama, has anyone considered this scenario.....on the economy?

Get the oil companies to freeze their prices for the next two or three years, cut their clients cost by half, as well as ask their clients to cut their gas prices by half.....Have the Government to give the oil companies that participate, special consideration, by allowing them to write off the loss as a charitable contribution to the nation.

Wouldn't the economy sky rocket to a level unseen or heard of? Individuals would immediately start to buy and sell again. Trips will be taken, shopping will sky rocket, people will be able to get to work and pay their bills...Happy people spend money. Just a thought.

It's never been tried...it may work.

Take care,

How will you fight the "Elite" tag? It reminds me of "Swiftboating" where opponents get to frame you with a sound bite. Rove framed Kerry a war vet, while Busch didn't even complete his commitment to the National Air Guard. It cost a ton of money to train a pilot and he didn't complete his tour of duty, yet Kerry is framed "Unpatriotic". Now you are being framed as "Elite" by a couple of people worht more than 100 million dollars. Ironic, isn't it?

Good afternoon, Senator. I served in the Frequent Wind and Mayaguez operations that marked the end of our involvement in Southeast Asia in 1975.

What if, instead of spending $2.6 billion on weapons for the French in 1945, we'd created a Marshall Plan for Southeast Asia? Maybe the greatest foreign policy debacle in US history would never have occurred.  Maybe there wouldn't be a Wall in the Mall with 58,000 names on it.

I have an idea called "One World, One Community". Our best and brightest secondary students would work with USAID and Developing World communities. It would put a human face on US foreign aid policy and inspire American young people.

Would you support this idea?

Thank you.

This question is not only for Senator Obama but for all Democratic Party leaders and it deals with the future of the Democratic Party. During this election cycle, the peculiar dynamics that underlie the Democratic Presidential nominee process have been revealed and debated in length. One of the most astonishing characteristics of the process is that it makes it extremely difficult for traditional blue collar Democrats and older, loyal Democratic voters from voting in 13 caucus states, where they either can’t afford to spend two hours voting or are physically unable to do so. These rules essentially ensure that the voters who don’t belong to these two groups have an unfair advantage in influencing who is the nominee will be. Their candidate has an easier time winning the nomination. During a normal election cycle, this would not be a problem, but in a close race such as the one we’re experiencing this year, the nominee who is chosen is chosen not because of how the voters voted, but because the rules determined the outcome. The fact that Florida and Michigan, states with large number of older Democrats and blue collar Democrats respectively, have also been disenfranchised this year, just further reduces the influence of both these groups on who is going to be nominated. How are Democratic leaders going to convince blue collar Democrats and older, loyal Democrats to come out and vote in November when the Democratic Party didn’t want them to come out and influence who their Presidential nominee would be? These people have been the backbone of the Democratic Party for decades. Is the Democratic Party really going to cater to groups who are too ambivalent to politics to vote or groups who are likely to vote for Republicans at the expense of people who the party relied on to succeed for so many years? Why should these people remain loyal when they not only receive no benefit from doing so, but also get punished for doing so?

Senator Obama

While I take you at your word that you do not share the views of Rev. Wright, what am I to make of the judgement and/or moral compass of someone who would not distance himself from a pastor or church which awards Louis Farrakhan a lifetime achievement award - or who considers Rev.Meeks, with his homophobic and antisemituc pronouncements a mentor -spiritual or otherwise?  Your defense that your church and pastor was involved in many good works is insufficient. Hezbollah runs charities and hospitals while sending forth suicide bombers.  Moussolini made the trains run on time, Hitler revived the German economy. My point is that you had a choice to align yourself with institutions which provide for a greater good without the attendant hate rhetoric. If you are willing to tolerate these views in your admitted "spiritual advisors" what will you be willing to tolerate in those in your administration responsible for crafting social and foreign policy? Moral compass and content of character are, in my view, as important in my president, as the economy, Iraq and gas prices.

Don't get me wrong.  You were my great white/black-black/white hope. This issue has brought me up short.  I am 66 years old, liberal leaning,  and have voted in every presidential election since Kennedy.  For the first time I may leave the top of the ballot blank. I really don't want to do that -so get me back.

When is the issue of John Mccain still suffering from post-traumatic sydrome. I heard that he still refers to vietemese as gooks and gets bent out of shape when it is braught up. Putting him in control of our armed forces could prove way more dangerous than what has been talked about. Is is legal to request a pyschological evaluation on him? On top of this potentially fatal position that he can put the country in.... I am not sure that putting someone who has been a prisoner of war in the position to make decisions about war, should at least be probed! His mental health is a concern to me that should be addressed.

the spin that is put on hillary's so called reasons to steal the election strikes me as peculiar. Everytime she mentions the votes she says Barack can not get, why don't the pundits and others mention the ratio. Barack recieves (already) a fairly good amount of the white blue collar votes to the fact that she gets minimal of the black vote. She can't win without the black vote. We all know Hillary is desperate. It is rediculous for people to continue addressing her pathetic attemps to steal this election. Barack you are a Gifted man of God and He has annointed you and appointed you for this assignment. It's a God thing (Jesus Christ) and nobody has the power to over rule God's plan... It is awesome!! It is the most profound thing that I have seen in my lifetime. When the enemy comes in, like a flood, God is lifting up a standard against him. I am 44 years old, female, African American and a Social Work Major. I try not to miss a moment of this monumental time in history. Stay prayed up and I pray for you daily. And as soon as I can I will send more money. I love you and Michelle. Speaking of Michelle, she is annointed and appointed, also. I am so amazed at seeing the Hand of God over your lives. Michelle you speak to women. When you talk, we identify with your hopes, dreams, and concerns. Their is so much authenticity in your words. When you speak, we feel your soul. A recent article has raised the issue of Senator Obama's knowledge in historical events in relation to statements he has made on the campaign trail.  For example: "In his victory speech after the North Carolina primary, Sen. Barack Obama said something that is all the more remarkable for how little it has been remarked upon.

In defending his stated intent to meet with America's enemies without preconditions, Sen. Obama said: "I trust the American people to understand that it is not weakness, but wisdom to talk not just to our friends, but to our enemies, like Roosevelt did, and Kennedy did, and Truman did." Jack Kelly Fri May 9, 9:30 AM ET

When you look at history... what enemies did these leaders meet with?  According to the article that I read... Sen Obama is incorrect in his correlation and/or use of these past leaders of our nation as supporting evidence for his plan of action.

He has political inexperience on his side.  He lacks foreign-relations experience.  Is he now creating his own history?

Dear Presidential Candidates:

This Presidential election is very unique and so closely watched; wouldn’t it be grand to do something different with regards to your campaigns?

People are watching all the “millions” of dollars being spent on campaign efforts; advertising, etc.

Why not put that millions of dollars to better use?  The Presidential candidates can make a race to see who can do better.

Instead of investing in advertising; campaigning, etc… why not move the money toward our veterans whom are in great need of support once they return from the war!

Each of the Presidential candidates has said how much they care for our veterans, and the war.

Let us “the people” see how much is really cared!

Let us see the presidential candidates donate 1-million to the Annual Veterans Fund Raising; and further; let us see our candidates have an auction/fundraiser to raise more money for these veterans, and challenge big-businesses all around to also donate by matching funds.  Let’s put these millions of dollars to better use.

How many veterans come home to have nothing left but their injuries or any medical support and psychiatric help?

How many veterans have committed suicide once they return from the war?

How many married couples are forced to leave their infant child in a strange country with no one to leave their child with, because they are stationed there, and have been called to duty?

We as the support system for the veterans need to give them more; they deserve more, and we need to make it happen!

Sincerely,

Robin J Campbell

I am a staunch supporter of Sen. Barack Obama and I strongly believe that he is the individual to lead our country at this crucial juncture in history.  Although I'm very uncomfortable with Hillary as VP, what better way to display his desire to unite, to bridge the divide that separates us across racial and socio-economic lines than for him to offer Hillary the VP position.  With everything that she has thrown at him, what grander gesture to can he make than to say "Hillary, I would like to bridge the gap that separates you and me, your coalition and mine".

Mr Senator,I am a middle age white female, a nurse by profession. I am from WVa. I feel that you didnt spend enough time in our wonderful state before the election. Tonight on CNN/360 a Time columnist made the comment there just isnt as many college educated people in this state..This offends the heck out of me..and then the statement there isn't as many Black Americans in this state, compare to what state,,and we havent moved on. From where? I am a home health nurse. Lets get to the real problems..quit making this a racial problem..There are home health agencies closing every day due to medicare cuts. The agencies have to discharge patients who not fit the profile for coverage. For the eldery to recieve home health nurses they have to have a skill..however there are so many who need home health to teach medication or how to do simple ADLs that we take so granted..Last  week a news program showed in Calif. retired people selling there homes and living in the back of a van..one lady in the middle of the month had less the ten dollars to live on..what has happened to this great country of ours to allow this. RACIAL, yes this is a racial thing,,the human race..we need to take care of our own first..rebuild our great country. Stand on the things that our country was founded on God, family and hard work..Maybe our great state here is looked down on because we are in the Bible Belt. But come here and live if you or your family get into a hardship your neighbors are knocking on your door saying "how can I help". Will I vote for you? Proably no..not because of your skin color..all men was created the same in the Lord's eyes...but I feel you have let your campain advisors jump on this racial horse rode it. This is an escape machinism. Tell us what will you do for the senior Americans..medicare, children, gas. I know our great nation has always been the great protector for the world. But right now home needs attendion. I want to hear more about the care for the seniors citizens..gas..home health agencies are cheaper then long term facilities. So lets talk!

How Bush's grandfather helped Hitler's rise to power

Rumours of a link between the US first family and the Nazi war machine have circulated for decades.

Now the Guardian can reveal how repercussions of events that culminated in action under the Trading with the Enemy Act are still being felt by today's president

This article appeared in the Guardian on Saturday September 25 2004 . It was last updated at 23:59 on September 24 2004.

George Bush's grandfather, the late US senator Prescott Bush, was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from their involvement with the financial backers of Nazi Germany.

The Guardian has obtained confirmation from newly discovered files in the US National Archives that a firm of which Prescott Bush was a director was involved with the financial architects of Nazism.

His business dealings, which continued until his company's assets were seized in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act, has led more than 60 years later to a civil action for damages being brought in Germany against the Bush family by two former slave labourers at Auschwitz and to a hum of pre-election controversy.

The evidence has also prompted one former US Nazi war crimes prosecutor to argue that the late senator's action should have been grounds for prosecution for giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

The debate over Prescott Bush's behaviour has been bubbling under the surface for some time. There has been a steady internet chatter about the "Bush/Nazi" connection, much of it inaccurate and unfair. But the new documents, many of which were only declassified last year, show that even after America had entered the war and when there was already significant information about the Nazis' plans and policies, he worked for and profited from companies closely involved with the very German businesses that financed Hitler's rise to power. It has also been suggested that the money he made from these dealings helped to establish the Bush family fortune and set up its political dynasty.

Remarkably, little of Bush's dealings with Germany has received public scrutiny, partly because of the secret status of the documentation involving him. But now the multibillion dollar legal action for damages by two Holocaust survivors against the Bush family, and the imminent publication of three books on the subject are threatening to make Prescott Bush's business history an uncomfortable issue for his grandson, George W, as he seeks re-election.

While there is no suggestion that Prescott Bush was sympathetic to the Nazi cause, the documents reveal that the firm he worked for, Brown Brothers Harriman (BBH), acted as a US base for the German industrialist, Fritz Thyssen, who helped finance Hitler in the 1930s before falling out with him at the end of the decade. The Guardian has seen evidence that shows Bush was the director of the New York-based Union Banking Corporation (UBC) that represented Thyssen's US interests and he continued to work for the bank after America entered the war.

Tantalising

Bush was also on the board of at least one of the companies that formed part of a multinational network of front companies to allow Thyssen to move assets around the world.

Thyssen owned the largest steel and coal company in Germany and grew rich from Hitler's efforts to re-arm between the two world wars. One of the pillars in Thyssen's international corporate web, UBC, worked exclusively for, and was owned by, a Thyssen-controlled bank in the Netherlands. More tantalising are Bush's links to the Consolidated Silesian Steel Company (CSSC), based in mineral rich Silesia on the German-Polish border. During the war, the company made use of Nazi slave labour from the concentration camps, including Auschwitz. The ownership of CSSC changed hands several times in the 1930s, but documents from the US National Archive declassified last year link Bush to CSSC, although it is not clear if he and UBC were still involved in the company when Thyssen's American assets were seized in 1942.

Three sets of archives spell out Prescott Bush's involvement. All three are readily available, thanks to the efficient US archive system and a helpful and dedicated staff at both the Library of Congress in Washington and the National Archives at the University of Maryland.

The first set of files, the Harriman papers in the Library of Congress, show that Prescott Bush was a director and shareholder of a number of companies involved with Thyssen.

The second set of papers, which are in the National Archives, are contained in vesting order number 248 which records the seizure of the company assets. What these files show is that on October 20 1942 the alien property custodian seized the assets of the UBC, of which Prescott Bush was a director. Having gone through the books of the bank, further seizures were made against two affiliates, the Holland-American Trading Corporation and the Seamless Steel Equipment Corporation. By November, the Silesian-American Company, another of Prescott Bush's ventures, had also been seized.

The third set of documents, also at the National Archives, are contained in the files on IG Farben, who was prosecuted for war crimes.

A report issued by the Office of Alien Property Custodian in 1942 stated of the companies that "since 1939, these (steel and mining) properties have been in possession of and have been operated by the German government and have undoubtedly been of considerable assistance to that country's war effort".

Prescott Bush, a 6ft 4in charmer with a rich singing voice, was the founder of the Bush political dynasty and was once considered a potential presidential candidate himself. Like his son, George, and grandson, George W, he went to Yale where he was, again like his descendants, a member of the secretive and influential Skull and Bones student society. He was an artillery captain in the first world war and married Dorothy Walker, the daughter of George Herbert Walker, in 1921.

In 1924, his father-in-law, a well-known St Louis investment banker, helped set him up in business in New York with Averill Harriman, the wealthy son of railroad magnate E H Harriman in New York, who had gone into banking.

One of the first jobs Walker gave Bush was to manage UBC. Bush was a founding member of the bank and the incorporation documents, which list him as one of seven directors, show he owned one share in UBC worth $125.

The bank was set up by Harriman and Bush's father-in-law to provide a US bank for the Thyssens, Germany's most powerful industrial family.

August Thyssen, the founder of the dynasty had been a major contributor to Germany's first world war effort and in the 1920s, he and his sons Fritz and Heinrich established a network of overseas banks and companies so their assets and money could be whisked offshore if threatened again.

By the time Fritz Thyssen inherited the business empire in 1926, Germany's economic recovery was faltering. After hearing Adolf Hitler speak, Thyssen became mesmerised by the young firebrand. He joined the Nazi party in December 1931 and admits backing Hitler in his autobiography, I Paid Hitler, when the National Socialists were still a radical fringe party. He stepped in several times to bail out the struggling party: in 1928 Thyssen had bought the Barlow Palace on Briennerstrasse, in Munich, which Hitler converted into the Brown House, the headquarters of the Nazi party. The money came from another Thyssen overseas institution, the Bank voor Handel en Scheepvarrt in Rotterdam.

By the late 1930s, Brown Brothers Harriman, which claimed to be the world's largest private investment bank, and UBC had bought and shipped millions of dollars of gold, fuel, steel, coal and US treasury bonds to Germany, both feeding and financing Hitler's build-up to war.

Between 1931 and 1933 UBC bought more than $8m worth of gold, of which $3m was shipped abroad. According to documents seen by the Guardian, after UBC was set up it transferred $2m to BBH accounts and between 1924 and 1940 the assets of UBC hovered around $3m, dropping to $1m only on a few occasions.

In 1941, Thyssen fled Germany after falling out with Hitler but he was captured in France and detained for the remainder of the war.

There was nothing illegal in doing business with the Thyssens throughout the 1930s and many of America's best-known business names invested heavily in the German economic recovery. However, everything changed after Germany invaded Poland in 1939. Even then it could be argued that BBH was within its rights continuing business relations with the Thyssens until the end of 1941 as the US was still technically neutral until the attack on Pearl Harbor. The trouble started on July 30 1942 when the New York Herald-Tribune ran an article entitled "Hitler's Angel Has $3m in US Bank". UBC's huge gold purchases had raised suspicions that the bank was in fact a "secret nest egg" hidden in New York for Thyssen and other Nazi bigwigs. The Alien Property Commission (APC) launched an investigation.

There is no dispute over the fact that the US government seized a string of assets controlled by BBH - including UBC and SAC - in the autumn of 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy act. What is in dispute is if Harriman, Walker and Bush did more than own these companies on paper.

Erwin May, a treasury attache and officer for the department of investigation in the APC, was assigned to look into UBC's business. The first fact to emerge was that Roland Harriman, Prescott Bush and the other directors didn't actually own their shares in UBC but merely held them on behalf of Bank voor Handel. Strangely, no one seemed to know who owned the Rotterdam-based bank, including UBC's president.

May wrote in his report of August 16 1941: "Union Banking Corporation, incorporated August 4 1924, is wholly owned by the Bank voor Handel en Scheepvaart N.V of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. My investigation has produced no evidence as to the ownership of the Dutch bank. Mr Cornelis sic Lievense, president of UBC, claims no knowledge as to the ownership of the Bank voor Handel but believes it possible that Baron Heinrich Thyssen, brother of Fritz Thyssen, may own a substantial interest.

"

May cleared the bank of holding a golden nest egg for the Nazi leaders but went on to describe a network of companies spreading out from UBC across Europe, America and Canada, and how money from voor Handel travelled to these companies through UBC.

By September May had traced the origins of the non-American board members and found that Dutchman HJ Kouwenhoven - who met with Harriman in 1924 to set up UBC - had several other jobs: in addition to being the managing director of voor Handel he was also the director of the August Thyssen bank in Berlin and a director of Fritz Thyssen's Union Steel Works, the holding company that controlled Thyssen's steel and coal mine empire in Germany.

Within a few weeks, Homer Jones, the chief of the APC investigation and research division sent a memo to the executive committee of APC recommending the US government vest UBC and its assets. Jones named the directors of the bank in the memo, including Prescott Bush's name, and wrote: "Said stock is held by the above named individuals, however, solely as nominees for the Bank voor Handel, Rotterdam, Holland, which is owned by one or more of the Thyssen family, nationals of Germany and Hungary. The 4,000 shares hereinbefore set out are therefore beneficially owned and help for the interests of enemy nationals, and are vestible by the APC," according to the memo from the National Archives seen by the Guardian.

Red-handed

Jones recommended that the assets be liquidated for the benefit of the government, but instead UBC was maintained intact and eventually returned to the American shareholders after the war. Some claim that Bush sold his share in UBC after the war for $1.5m - a huge amount of money at the time - but there is no documentary evidence to support this claim. No further action was ever taken nor was the investigation continued, despite the fact UBC was caught red-handed operating a American shell company for the Thyssen family eight months after America had entered the war and that this was the bank that had partly financed Hitler's rise to power.

The most tantalising part of the story remains shrouded in mystery: the connection, if any, between Prescott Bush, Thyssen, Consolidated Silesian Steel Company (CSSC) and Auschwitz.

Thyssen's partner in United Steel Works, which had coal mines and steel plants across the region, was Friedrich Flick, another steel magnate who also owned part of IG Farben, the powerful German chemical company.

Flick's plants in Poland made heavy use of slave labour from the concentration camps in Poland. According to a New York Times article published in March 18 1934 Flick owned two-thirds of CSSC while "American interests" held the rest.

The US National Archive documents show that BBH's involvement with CSSC was more than simply holding the shares in the mid-1930s. Bush's friend and fellow "bonesman" Knight Woolley, another partner at BBH, wrote to Averill Harriman in January 1933 warning of problems with CSSC after the Poles started their drive to nationalise the plant. "The Consolidated Silesian Steel Company situation has become increasingly complicated, and I have accordingly brought in Sullivan and Cromwell, in order to be sure that our interests are protected," wrote Knight. "After studying the situation Foster Dulles is insisting that their man in Berlin get into the picture and obtain the information which the directors here should have. You will recall that Foster is a director and he is particularly anxious to be certain that there is no liability attaching to the American directors.

"

But the ownership of the CSSC between 1939 when the Germans invaded Poland and 1942 when the US government vested UBC and SAC is not clear.

"SAC held coal mines and definitely owned CSSC between 1934 and 1935, but when SAC was vested there was no trace of CSSC. All concrete evidence of its ownership disappears after 1935 and there are only a few traces in 1938 and 1939," says Eva Schweitzer, the journalist and author whose book, America and the Holocaust, is published next month.

Silesia was quickly made part of the German Reich after the invasion, but while Polish factories were seized by the Nazis, those belonging to the still neutral Americans (and some other nationals) were treated more carefully as Hitler was still hoping to persuade the US to at least sit out the war as a neutral country. Schweitzer says American interests were dealt with on a case-by-case basis. The Nazis bought some out, but not others.

The two Holocaust survivors suing the US government and the Bush family for a total of $40bn in compensation claim both materially benefited from Auschwitz slave labour during the second world war.

Kurt Julius Goldstein, 87, and Peter Gingold, 85, began a class action in America in 2001, but the case was thrown out by Judge Rosemary Collier on the grounds that the government cannot be held liable under the principle of "state sovereignty".

Jan Lissmann, one of the lawyers for the survivors, said: "President Bush withdrew President Bill Clinton's signature from the treaty that founded the court not only to protect Americans, but also to protect himself and his family.

"

Lissmann argues that genocide-related cases are covered by international law, which does hold governments accountable for their actions. He claims the ruling was invalid as no hearing took place.

In their claims, Mr Goldstein and Mr Gingold, honorary chairman of the League of Anti-fascists, suggest the Americans were aware of what was happening at Auschwitz and should have bombed the camp.

The lawyers also filed a motion in The Hague asking for an opinion on whether state sovereignty is a valid reason for refusing to hear their case. A ruling is expected within a month.

The petition to The Hague states: "From April 1944 on, the American Air Force could have destroyed the camp with air raids, as well as the railway bridges and railway lines from Hungary to Auschwitz. The murder of about 400,000 Hungarian Holocaust victims could have been prevented.

"

The case is built around a January 22 1944 executive order signed by President Franklin Roosevelt calling on the government to take all measures to rescue the European Jews. The lawyers claim the order was ignored because of pressure brought by a group of big American companies, including BBH, where Prescott Bush was a director.

Lissmann said: "If we have a positive ruling from the court it will cause president Bush huge problems and make him personally liable to pay compensation.

"

The US government and the Bush family deny all the claims against them.

In addition to Eva Schweitzer's book, two other books are about to be published that raise the subject of Prescott Bush's business history. The author of the second book, to be published next year, John Loftus, is a former US attorney who prosecuted Nazi war criminals in the 70s. Now living in St Petersburg, Florida and earning his living as a security commentator for Fox News and ABC radio, Loftus is working on a novel which uses some of the material he has uncovered on Bush. Loftus stressed that what Prescott Bush was involved in was just what many other American and British businessmen were doing at the time.

"You can't blame Bush for what his grandfather did any more than you can blame Jack Kennedy for what his father did - bought Nazi stocks - but what is important is the cover-up, how it could have gone on so successfully for half a century, and does that have implications for us today?" he said.

"This was the mechanism by which Hitler was funded to come to power, this was the mechanism by which the Third Reich's defence industry was re-armed, this was the mechanism by which Nazi profits were repatriated back to the American owners, this was the mechanism by which investigations into the financial laundering of the Third Reich were blunted," said Loftus, who is vice-chairman of the Holocaust Museum in St Petersburg.

"The Union Banking Corporation was a holding company for the Nazis, for Fritz Thyssen," said Loftus. "At various times, the Bush family has tried to spin it, saying they were owned by a Dutch bank and it wasn't until the Nazis took over Holland that they realised that now the Nazis controlled the apparent company and that is why the Bush supporters claim when the war was over they got their money back. Both the American treasury investigations and the intelligence investigations in Europe completely bely that, it's absolute horseshit. They always knew who the ultimate beneficiaries were.

"

"There is no one left alive who could be prosecuted but they did get away with it," said Loftus. "As a former federal prosecutor, I would make a case for Prescott Bush, his father-in-law (George Walker) and Averill Harriman to be prosecuted for giving aid and comfort to the enemy. They remained on the boards of these companies knowing that they were of financial benefit to the nation of Germany.

"

Loftus said Prescott Bush must have been aware of what was happening in Germany at the time. "My take on him was that he was a not terribly successful in-law who did what Herbert Walker told him to. Walker and Harriman were the two evil geniuses, they didn't care about the Nazis any more than they cared about their investments with the Bolsheviks.

"

What is also at issue is how much money Bush made from his involvement. His supporters suggest that he had one token share. Loftus disputes this, citing sources in "the banking and intelligence communities" and suggesting that the Bush family, through George Herbert Walker and Prescott, got $1.5m out of the involvement. There is, however, no paper trail to this sum.

The third person going into print on the subject is John Buchanan, 54, a Miami-based magazine journalist who started examining the files while working on a screenplay. Last year, Buchanan published his findings in the venerable but small-circulation New Hampshire Gazette under the headline "Documents in National Archives Prove George Bush's Grandfather Traded With the Nazis - Even After Pearl Harbor". He expands on this in his book to be published next month - Fixing America: Breaking the Stranglehold of Corporate Rule, Big Media and the Religious Right.

In the article, Buchanan, who has worked mainly in the trade and music press with a spell as a muckraking reporter in Miami, claimed that "the essential facts have appeared on the internet and in relatively obscure books but were dismissed by the media and Bush family as undocumented diatribes".

Buchanan suffers from hypermania, a form of manic depression, and when he found himself rebuffed in his initial efforts to interest the media, he responded with a series of threats against the journalists and media outlets that had spurned him. The threats, contained in e-mails, suggested that he would expose the journalists as "traitors to the truth".

Unsurprisingly, he soon had difficulty getting his calls returned. Most seriously, he faced aggravated stalking charges in Miami, in connection with a man with whom he had fallen out over the best way to publicise his findings. The charges were dropped last month.

Biography

Buchanan said he regretted his behaviour had damaged his credibility but his main aim was to secure publicity for the story. Both Loftus and Schweitzer say Buchanan has come up with previously undisclosed documentation.

The Bush family have largely responded with no comment to any reference to Prescott Bush. Brown Brothers Harriman also declined to comment.

The Bush family recently approved a flattering biography of Prescott Bush entitled Duty, Honour, Country by Mickey Herskowitz. The publishers, Rutledge Hill Press, promised the book would "deal honestly with Prescott Bush's alleged business relationships with Nazi industrialists and other accusations".

In fact, the allegations are dealt with in less than two pages. The book refers to the Herald-Tribune story by saying that "a person of less established ethics would have panicked ... Bush and his partners at Brown Brothers Harriman informed the government regulators that the account, opened in the late 1930s, was 'an unpaid courtesy for a client' ... Prescott Bush acted quickly and openly on behalf of the firm, served well by a reputation that had never been compromised. He made available all records and all documents. Viewed six decades later in the era of serial corporate scandals and shattered careers, he received what can be viewed as the ultimate clean bill.

"

The Prescott Bush story has been condemned by both conservatives and some liberals as having nothing to do with the current president. It has also been suggested that Prescott Bush had little to do with Averill Harriman and that the two men opposed each other politically.

However, documents from the Harriman papers include a flattering wartime profile of Harriman in the New York Journal American and next to it in the files is a letter to the financial editor of that paper from Prescott Bush congratulating the paper for running the profile. He added that Harriman's "performance and his whole attitude has been a source of inspiration and pride to his partners and his friends".

The Anti-Defamation League in the US is supportive of Prescott Bush and the Bush family. In a statement last year they said that "rumours about the alleged Nazi 'ties' of the late Prescott Bush ... have circulated widely through the internet in recent years. These charges are untenable and politically motivated ... Prescott Bush was neither a Nazi nor a Nazi sympathiser.

"

However, one of the country's oldest Jewish publications, the Jewish Advocate, has aired the controversy in detail.

More than 60 years after Prescott Bush came briefly under scrutiny at the time of a faraway war, his grandson is facing a different kind of scrutiny but one underpinned by the same perception that, for some people, war can be a profitable business.

I’ve noticed as well as, millions of other vigilant new observers and supporters, that many of the media news anchor reporters have unfortunately been politically incorrect and has referred to you as a black man, may I offer my apology for our unattended embedded racism.  Forgive them they do this by racial default and hopefully they are merely making deer in headlight statements.  All of us must be thankful, God has blessed this country with a leader no more black than white or should I say Anglo-Saxon than African; most politically correct, ‘a man of color, physically’, ‘a man of character mentally’ and finally ‘a man appointed to mend the torn fabric of America in spirit and truth'. An American Citizen!

My hat is off to the mature reporters that consciously avoided this serious racial error Freudian slip or this racist stigma. This is not a job for a man or women of color but, a particular chosen one according to the content of the character!  I would value the time in the history of this great nation, when we can elect a U.S. citizens of any culture or race without us setting a color or physical benchmark rather examining the content of his/her character.  For the greater good of this nation, I thank God he is not African-American or the synonymous ‘Negro’ rather an Anglo-American African which can be broken down even further according to countries clan or tribe.

A classmate, Bobo use to always say, ‘Words don’t mean, people do, by what they say and what they do’!

May we join together to pray that God continues to Bless America and allow us to be a helping hand of wealth and healing to this world during the 21st Century and foster an end to the sickness and killing in every society on earth.

I am forwarding this correspondence to the media in hope and faith that our nation will advance in maturity as we embrace the 21 century.  Please take a poll: Who are we? Are we looking to advance a people of character or maintain the primitive past of racism?   The time of love is now.

Sen. Obama, I am a very strong supporter of you and I would like to know if you think that, when you become president of the U.S., that more citizens would be more likely to enlist in the military than they would with Sen. McCain.I believe that we(U.S.A.) need to rebuild and re-equip our forces and I think that you would be the better of the two to do so.
