iReport roundtable today at 2:30 p.m. ET

We look forward to chatting with you all during today's roundtable discussion. Several members of the iReport team will be here to answer your questions and comments.

A couple of things will be different about today's conversation:

* We'd like to focus the discussion on editorial issues. Tips for getting the "On CNN" stamp, questions about assignment topics, etc.

* Our community manager is on a well-deserved vacation, so we'll address community related issues next week.

* The roundtable will last for 30 minutes instead of the usual hour. We've got a packed schedule today!

If you have any questions about what makes a good iReport or how to improve your submissions, please bring them. We'll open comments on this post at 2:30 p.m. ET. See you then!

Hello iReport!

April 9, 2009

Hi everyone. So my question has to do with opinion/editorial pieces. The other day I did one on North Korea, and then one about gun policy in the US. One commenter in particular (I won't name him) took massive issue with my style. Admittedly the North Korean post was only 0:25 long and was a "gut reaction" to something that worried me, but the gun policy one took a LOT of research and time -- it didn't just take the 3 or 4 minutes of time spent taping it.

Actually, during the course of research I revised my previous attitude toward guns. I used to be against them, but the articles and statistics I read suggested I was too reactive, and that responsible gun ownership is not a bad idea.

So I guess my question is this: are you iReport producers only looking for hard news stories (e.g. look there's an earthquake outside of my apartment, here's a protest, etc.) or is it okay to keep submitting opinion pieces?

I’m not going to submit them anymore if it’s no longer the right thing for the community.

Thanks,

David

Hello All!

April 9, 2009

Its seems that some of the I-Report staff is on a first name basis with some of the Star I-Reporters.

It seems to me that you should help some of the “Star” I-Reporters strive to deliver quality I-Reports.

There is one Star I-Reporter on here, who has posted over 1400 I-Reports which have never made it to CNN.  This to me seems In-Sane.  To give this person a star just because throws the most stuff at the wall.

The next time she complains about a negative comment based on one of her reports you should remind her of her status.

Sal Great I-Report today.

@davidseaman Opinion pieces are definitely important to iReport.com. iReporters can give their opinions on news stories and offer something that objective journalists can't. These "gut reaction" pieces often make it on CNN, and start passionate discussions on iReport.com.

That being said, not everyone in the community is going to agree with your points of view. I'd take the comments with a grain of salt, knowing that there are a lot of people with different ideas and opinions out there.

Katie,

I have seen lots of I-Reports targeting famous in a light which is less than positive.

Since we have I-Reports who are starting to be "famous" why can we not target their views or reports with the same vigor.

Deleteing comments just because someone does not like it, is pretty lame.

If there is no cuss words or hostile intent, why the censorship

When you live in Smalltown U.S.A it's kind of hard to find big news breaking stories you can run get photos of. Exactly what are you looking for as far as what makes a good story and what might make the "on CNN" stamp?

April 9, 2009

@stocktrade8 The superstar status on iReport.com is based on an algorithm that tracks activity and CNN status, among other things. Some superstars get their badge by posting stories that appear on CNN, others earn it through pageviews or comments. The idea is that there are lots of ways to calculate what's newsworthy, and CNN isn't the only voice making the decision. Does that make sense?

April 9, 2009

My questions are: when you have one or more photos on your post before submitting it, can it be made possible to veiw the post pictures first before it is uploaded to the site? Also, can the pictures be edited and changed if say we are not happy with how it looks? thanks

Any advice on what iReport is looking for, however broad, is really welcome.

I see video gets suggested a lot in the Assignment Desk, yet most are pix - do people not have / not want to use a webcam - I would ask you all to try one - it's a bit odd at first, but imagine giving your opinion to a friend - you'll find it mush easier than typing - and your message will be "clearer"

@stocktrade8 I'm gonna grab the question you asked Katie about portraying iReporters in an unflattering light. It's simply unacceptable to post iReports that abuse other members of the site, plain and simple. We're not here to bicker, we're here to uncover and highlight the kinds of stories and perspectives that need to be part of CNN's news coverage. When the conversation here devolves to petty name-calling and reporting unnecessary violations against other members of the community, it's not very useful or interesting for anyone.

That said, I'm eager to get talking about what is useful. What do y'all need to be able to find and tell the kinds of iReports that make a difference? Fire away!

Names of people you interviewed are always appreciated, especially if the video gets used on CNN. Also, if you could provide extra context to the iReport, that'd be great. Say you went to an event. @tensoft We've got tips for what makes a good iReport here: http://www.ireport.com/toolkit.jspa Is that helpful? Should it be easier to find?

There are so many different types of iReports that are beneficial to the site, though. Video commentaries, photos, hard and soft news ... there isn't an "ideal" iReport, but the best are often relating to the news and the topics we're asking for on our Assignment Desk. We also encourage original photos and video.

Hi @auntiebjw - we'd prefer that you leave the text area of your iReports to just text. If you place images in the text portion of your iReport, they get completely lost when your iReport gets shared.

@davidseaman

In terms of length, it really depends what the content is. For example, for questions to guests or opinions, I'd say to keep it 30 seconds to a minute. Since those types of iReports are usually intended for TV shows, the TV folks like to keep things short and concise.

As for videos that follow an issue, or are more investigative, you can afford to make them longer. Maybe 2-3 minutes. Shorter is usually better when it comes to video. Sadly, people's attention spans aren't too long.

April 9, 2009

@Ryn The best advice I have is to submit original photos and videos. We try to ask questions on our Assignment Desk (http://www.ireport.com/community/assignment) that are broad enough for people to offer their story and experience.

The great thing that iReporters can offer is a personal look at a bigger news issue, such as the state of our economy. It's compelling to hear how the economy is affecting an everyday person in her or her daily life instead of just reading headlines about Wall Street.

April 9, 2009

@katie Maybe if you can take us through the "On CNN" process, we can generate some questions. I think a lot of us don't know how it works. When a story comes in to the producers that view it, etc.

Always a joy to talk with you. You are open and helpful. Ireally envy your talent and your age!

April 9, 2009

Name calling is for kids, but when you have people who post about hot button issues, debate can get heated an direct.  We dont want to get censored because someone got their feelings hurt in an honest debate.

Not everyone on here has a point of view which agrees with everyone.  There is nothing wrong with taking opposing view in a debate and then crushing your opponent (debate team was fun).

Your asking for comments on Editorals.  Well part of an Editoral is the response it invokes.  If you stiffle the response because some people are too timid from handling a negative response then they should not be commenting in an open forum.

What does the sign "On CNN" mean? Where will that ireport appear?

April 9, 2009

@Salsteels Good question.

Each day, we focus on a few assignments that will appear at the top of our Assignment Desk (http://www.ireport.com/community/assignment), because those topics relate to current news or topics that CNN hopes to cover in the future. The iReport team monitors the site to look for responses to those topics (and breaking news, of course).

When we see something that stands out to us, we contact the iReporter by phone or e-mail to make sure that the content they uploaded belongs to them and to ask them more details about their iReport. If the content belongs to the iReporter, that piece will then get the "On CNN" stamp.

From there, the approved content is passed along to CNN producers and may appear on TV or CNN.com, depending on our coverage for the day.

It's always a blast talking to iReporters, and we're continually impressed with the diverse and creative iReports we receive each day.

Does that help?

@Alun -- I don't have a webcam. My piece this week, "Homeless, Hungry: Will Work For Webcam," is not entirely tongue in cheek.

@everyone

People seem to think that videos are preferred to still photos, but it honestly just depends on the assignment. If the Situation Room is asking for video questions, that's what they're looking for. However, on our  fun for free assignment, we approved lots of iReports that only had still photos. We welcomed whatever you gave us.

My best advice would be for everyone to read the assignment text. We always mention if we are looking for videos or photos.

sjunat55 sends in stills all the time, so maybe you could ask him for advice on how to snap some great photos.

@everyone This is an amazing discussion! Unfortunately, we have to run to another meeting, and can't answer every question.

Please feel free to leave any additional questions you have for the team here. We will return to the blog and answer those as soon as we can.

And there are plenty of amazing iReporters here at this discussion. Feel free to chat with each other about what makes a good iReport!

Thank you all for your time. We'll see you next week.

I asked about the video upload process, since I am not very computer saavy, but I think it got lost in the crowd.

I guess I just need to check the assignments more often and be more creative. I tend to think that things I find interesting aren't necessarily interesting to others... but who knows?? -maybe they are!

Does CNN still look at archived stuff for assignments that come up and use them?...ie I did a report on the food lines in OC and if a reporter decides later in a few weeks or month to do a report on food lines, might still access those videos?

I guess some of the glitches are still being worked on from the changes that were being made a couple of weeks ago?? I noticed that the Star thing is changed GOOD..at least now people cannot five star themselves..well unless they have another id or friends that just five star them...lol I have noticed that a post goes up..zero comments zero views..yet and zero stars..then all of a sudden there they are...all five stars..how does that work if nobody had gone there to even view it?? it this a glitch too??

There seems to be a noticeable reduction in the number of stories posted to iReport and its various categories (certainly "on CNN") on weekends, specifically Sundays.

This past Sunday evening (Israel time), for example, there were only a handful of stories with the time-stamp or more than 12-14 hours.

For this reason I haven't even bothered to post material on Sundays. Am I correct in my assumption that iReport staffers/producers don't consider (or consider as often) stories submitted on Sundays?

Thanks

Repeating my question about the algorithm, Lila. Is the featured list updated every day based on a certain time period, or is it calculated on a weekly basis and updated on a certain day, or what? The results will be different depending on how it's applied.

re "music on a still picture".

It can be done - on a pc, copy the picture into MovieMaker, make it the length you want, perhaps 8 to 10 seconds per picture, then add the music.

On a Mac, iMovie will do the same.

iReport supplies music which is "cleared"(i.e. you will have no royalties to pay or be breaching any copyright) - I trust it goes without saying that you know you cannot use "just any" music, unless it's completely your own work.

Hope that helps - but let me know if I can help more, please.

@MelissaF I export using .mov format. These tend to be better quality and less space. Although, this can be debated. I use a .mov MPEG4 and adjust the quality as need. Since this is web video, progressive scan and pixel ration 1.000 because LCD monitor are square.

I think everyone's uploads fail from time to time - I'm in the UK and it happens a lot - I uploaded from Indonesia last week and it was very quick and worked first time, so it clearly varies!

Please don't think you were ignored this week - unusually there was intended to be a specific discussion on content, but time ran out!

Do ask again next week, when things will be "back to normal" or let me and the others know your specific set up and problem - I'm sure you'll get loads of help!

@gilldreams re: stars, view count, etc. updating all of a sudden: the dynamic information on a page is "cached" (see wikipedia for details), so the info you see may lag behind for a while, but it updates eventually.  The effect is usually more pronounced if you're not logged in.

Just to add a final word -- I have a "draft proposal" for changes & improvements on ireport: http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-239383

I have many, many additional suggestions on every aspect of the site, from big-picture questions about the direction of long-term development, to the nuts and bolts and component systems. I've been pestering davidw with emails frequently.

I'm collecting the ideas that I hear a lot of you tossing out into the wind, and I'm hoping to keep updating my proposal with more installments, maybe a series. If you want to brainstorm about it, get in touch with me on the backchannel.

I need help and I am seeking out anyone who can help me.

I do not know where or how to get my voice heard.

My story begins the day my husband and I chose to adopt a very difficult and hard to place child. This child was six and half when we took him in. This child has had to overcome many battles.  The first six years of his life he was physically, mentally, and sexually abused; Passed from foster home to foster home, a truly unwanted trouble child.  Six months before his seventh birthday my husband and I chose to help give this unfortunate child an opportunity to have a family.

Never truly realizing the extent of his troubles, we moved forward to adopt the child. In order to move forward to understand a difficult child, we had to overcome his inability to speak. We had to establish a place of security, safety. We had to determine is functional ability. Yet still not fully determine, we do know he is Borderline mentally retarded. He is very destructive child, destroys everything given to him, he is vindictive, and mocks others around him, both in a negative and positive. By the age of eleven he begins acting as a bully. By the age of twelve he began displaying sexual behaviors.  Not quite acting out sexual, but displaying signs thereof.  As parents we have been very careful of his influences.

Thus far I have done my best as parent, I used all resources available, to include struggling to find more. I have raised this child with the help of psychologist, counselors, educators, pastors and so on. Every year we are faced with more struggles. Shuffled from school to school, skipped grades because his age is not suitable for his functional grade; It has been very difficult to find schools for children with behavioral, and lower functioning abilities. I have always been open an honest about the child so that we not only protected him but those children around him. Relocated to Pennsylvania in hopes to move forward, bring about a change and opportunity for him to start over. Ready and prepared to step into teen years. Unfortunate we have spiral.

Being placed on a new drug, I have been informed to be aware of depression.  At thirteen years of age, he wanted to committed suicide. He had a plan and knew how to carry out that plan. Out of fear, we had him placed in the hospital for supervision.  We informed the hospital of are struggles, how outpatient is not working. How his new behavior of sexual signs is a question, and with the advice of our last psychologist, “due to his low mental functional ability we needed to be careful on how we address this need”. “We need not to place thoughts or suggestions, when it could be a different then what we think”.  As parents we are at a brick wall, and need help. With recommendation by a Doctor, he was denied by the PA Behavioral Heath Commission a Residential Treatment Facility. We were told he should continue the “Less restrictive environment”.

I was referred to Social Services as a resource. A social worker informed him we was a child and “no one can do anything to him”. At the age of fourteen the state of Pennsylvania gives the child the legal right to deny counseling.  Now as a parent I am lost and my hands are tied. I have a retarded child place in a high school, he never went to six nor does fifth grade, placed in a class room with higher functioning (normal kids) age 15 thru 18. Social Services and Family Aide Society (Family Based Counseling) informing me that Social Services can get us the help we need both education and counseling. These organizations were introduced and requested work with us and become liaison with education, counseling, and the Behavioral Health Commission.

A child, retarded child, placed in a special needs classroom, exposed himself to another classmate, first time offense. The only problems in school as noted to me as a parent on very few occasions (always in contact with teacher daily via email and note book), not following directions, or being disruptive to other students. The school called Social Services after this offense, and contacted us. The state took us to court the following day and took custody of the child. The day of the court we were advised by the attorney and social services that they can get him into a facility right away if we sign a joint custody with the state. We did with the understanding that he will be inpatient ASAP. We were ill advised legally, by an assign attorney.

Social Services have created lies, stating we did not provide for this child both educationally and with mental health services. Yet, we gave them documentation, and stress that there is much more. He has yet to be moved to a facility to help address his needs. Have been denied visitation due to his misbehaviors, he has been denied a proper education, and kept away from his peer group and placed in environment not suitable for his functional ability.

I am trying to get help for a child. Social Service is trying to make us as parents to be unsuitable. How can a parent be supportive, when the state is trying to make the parent out to be against them and unhelpful? As parents we do not have a voice. This is unjust and against our civil rights. Information that goes before a Judge is only that of as Social Worker, and as parents are voice is silence.

I am not the only parent who has been treated unjustly by a state Social Services. This is a broken system that must be fix.

Let’s help this child to continue to move forward, let’s help this child become more than what he is. Let’s not allow a broken system continue to destroy the lives innocents, and tear families apart. Not all parents involved in Social Services are unworthy. Parents willing to help need to be supportive and worked with, not against.

April 10, 2009

@mitwersky We do have a smaller staff here on Saturdays and Sundays, but we consider iReports that come in on the weekend to be just as important as those that come in during the week. Timeliness is an important news factor. The quicker something is sent in after the event happened, the more relevant it is. So I wouldn't hold on to an iReport just because it happened to occur over the weekend!

ctlssYou can upload videos the same way you upload photos. Most file types are accepted, as long as they're under 100 MB. The most common reason items fail is that they're file types not accepted on iReport.com. If your item is an accepted file type and fails the first time, try to upload it again. If it fails a second time, please e-mail contact@ireport.com so we can take a look. Be sure to include the URL for your story. I hope that helps!
