iReport Roundtable: Tech talk

Next roundtable: Wednesday, April 29th, at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this week's discusiion

This week we will be brainstorming story ideas for our technology section. We've invited CNN.com Technology Producer Brandon Griggs to join in our discussion

We want to hear what kind of stories you'd like to cover, whether it's the latest new gadgets and video games, hot new social networking sites or cutting-edge scientific research. This is your chance to shape the tech coverage on iReport and on CNN.

We'll also discuss any other questions, comments and concerns you may have.

Hi and welcome everyone.

First off I want to thank everyone who participated in last week's brainstorming session. We came up with about a dozen great assignment ideas that we're working on.

Here's the first one: The iReport Photo club http://www.ireport.com/ir-topic-stories.jspa?topicId=248294

Hi all

April 23, 2009

Hi good afternoon, I would like to know if it is possible to make adjustments to the system that as soon as an ireport comes up on the screen that no way can anyone put a one star or any other stars without first commenting.

thanks

just an idea for assignments...the job market is BRUTAL right now.  any ireporters out there that got a job at one time and was told after being hired WHAT THEY DID that made the boss hire them?  like, "well bob, the reason u got the job was because u  were the only one who answered the _____ question correctly."  or, "well mary, we hired u because of your unique way of_______."

someone might have a tip or an idea for another ireporter who is about to go through their umpteenth interview, and could use a bit of an extra edge.

David that is great news..Thanks..Today I submitted a post. As soon as it popped onto my screen it already had ONE STAR...now how on earth can this happen unless the person/s are sitting to one star posts as they come onto the Latest screen! There is no way anyone could read my report THAT fast..It was too long to read then put one star. For myself the stars really don't matter it is just an annoyance and stupid behavior! The person would have to be the fasted speed reader in the world before putting any rating on that post today LOL pretty weird..

April 23, 2009

Hello Team iReport and fellow iReporters.  Hope your are having a great day!

Just wanted to drop my two cents on some tech suggestions.  List is below.

Backpack Journalists:  Journalists that use the most out of their technology (Laptops with NLE and a pocket HD camera) to tell the story, now local news stations are snatching them up.  Is this the future of news?  Related USAToday Article #1,  Related USAToday Article #2,  Blog about Backpack Journalist Toolkit

Earth Saving Technology:  Brazilian Engineer uses 2-liter bottle of water and bleach to light his building.  This is really fascinating.  Link to EWB Boston University Article

The Parking Meter gets Smart:  The new smart parking meter is on its way to a city near you.  The new meters will run on solar power, use wireless, take credit cards, can refund unused time and increase rates during peak hours of the day as well as a display a larger “Expired” warning.  Is this a great use of tax payer money to help urbanites park easier or is it a more efficient revenue generating source for cities?

New Federal Chief Information Officer:  President Obama has appointed the first CIO of the United States, Vivek Kundra.  Do you feel safer now?  Do you think a CIO is important for the US to combat cyber-warfare?  Do you think a federal CIO position should have been established 20 years ago?

Technology & Healthcare:  President Obama talked about how healthcare costs can be lowered by advances in technology and updating to all electronic medical records.  Why are MRI scans still costing thousands of dollars 29 years after being introduced and how safe are electronic medical records from hackers?

The New Operating Systems:  Life after Windows Vista, are you going to adopt Windows 7 with open arms or are you going to cling to your XP machine forever?  Are you a Mac purist and feel cheated by Apple because the new Mac OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6 might not run on your older PowerPC Macs.  Is it time to be in a hold pattern and wait till all the dust settles before you buy your next computer?

Your iReport Setup:  How do you iReport?  Do you use a webcam or do you use an HD video camera, do you record audio, or do you write what is on your mind.  Where do you like to iReport?  In your office, basement, kitchen, or on the road?  Have you been interviewed by CNN using your webcam and Skype?

These are just some thoughts that I wanted to throw out there.  Thank you for reading this far!

April 23, 2009

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this issue.. but part of me wonders whether the format of this site should be changed so that posters have the option of allowing or disallowing comments to the iReports they post.  Ultimately I may be against this idea, but I'm getting a little frustrated with the tenor of the comments.  To be sure, I only have myself to blame for wading into the muck with people....I'm oddly enough reminding myself of Richard Nixon's admonition to "never fight DOWN, only UP"....

So to answer my own question...I should just not answer comments...which sadly defeats the whole community ethos of this place

If you had new gadgets, cams, any Apple product, a new phone, that sorta thing, available to distribute from an advertiser, I'd love to help test them out via iReport news items. I don't see why CNN/iReport couldn't distribute some gear from/for a particular company to iReporters, in exchange for the iReporter including a mention or a bug or a promo of some sort for the co. in their iReport media. Make a new media, interactive  deal with an advertiser! Of course I'd expect, at the least, to be able to keep the gear for my time and effort and participation in such a venture.

The thrill of giving away original media to CNN is beginning to wear seriously off, for me. How much longer do you expect people to participate in a new media slavery deal? You are gonna have to start sweetening the pot.

Salsteels has a couple of good ideas...adding to the parking meters..how about expanding that by adding any cool technological stuff you see in your area be used by the city or state...like mine uses solar powered signs saying how fast you are going in order to slow you down if you're going to fast.

@TheDimmitt -- You can post two stories in a day, that's perfectly OK, we don't have a limit or threshold. I may be going a little into personal opinion territory here, but I feel like if the story is on-topic and high-quality, it's going to be more than welcome in any section. There's no need to respond to every single thing in a rush; a quality response that comes from the heart is what matters. But I am going into the realm of personal opinion here. For what it's worth.

Now, I've seen you do some cool stories where you talk about technology and your experiences with it... any ideas about the changes going on in tech? What is your impression of using Twitter and other services?

Some cameras are fuzzy, out of focus and just not easy to watch when the operator of the cam is moving all over the place and missing what they are trying to capture..???  sort of some of Salsteels type information but really please as simple as possible??

Also another thing to get you thinking... we're looking at changes in technology through history. Are there any technologies that you love or are going to miss, or that are kinda from the good ol' days? Past examples include Polaroid cameras and postcards.

In general, what is the history angle on technology? Just throwing that out there.

Margot that is great for the prices..I don't have a Sears here LOL we do have Price Mart...Just wanted people's experiences ups and downs of the equipment they are using. If it was worth the money or not, is it easy to operate or do you need a 20 inch book of instructions with a graphical map showing you how to work the darn things..It would help when upgrading or moving into this newer world of technologies..Some of us have not got the access to a lot so the simpler more efficient the better..

Thanks all.

I believe it was PapaK that said something and I added a few comments later as there is this time delay here..that I did a post on Keeping our children safe from Preditors..like all kinds..online in our communities etc..was it that??

David, I don't mean this to sound rude at all but it's really hard when I tell people I am an ireporter for CNN and I have a 99.00 Fuji camera. And, I live out in Timbuktu. They are like, "Yah right." LOL I think if a badge was created for IReporters it would help create better stories for CNN.

Also has anyone discussed setting up a system similar to AOL for warnings. That way if someone committed an offense rather than reporting and banning they could recieve an alloted number of warnings and once that number was passed they could have service temporarily banned for an alloted time period such as 1 hour or 24 hours. As long as there was a way to question the warning in case of abuse.

@everyone -- I want to start by recapping some of the questions that came up earlier in the discussion.

1) Preview and other advanced publishing options are on our wish list.

2) We should have the problems with comments disappearing after being flagged solved later next week.

3) Abusive behavior is not acceptable. Please report any violations and we will look into them as soon as possible

For most people this site is a hobby not professional and nobody is getting payed accept for the STAFF working for CNN and ireports. To have ireporters going around with badges could really cause a problem for some people out there as david said there are no credentials for ireports..

April 23, 2009

@OCGirl and everyone -- It is very important that you do not tell people that you are reporting for CNN.

my one conce about probabtion is that I (and i know dabids' team) have seen pictures and comemtns that are beyond the pale - no one should ahve to see them ever - and CNN has removed them almost immediately and mnahy were before the elction - so folks may not have witnessed them at all. So once you start a probabton program - where is the line? I assume the first two warnings (assumig you got them) are your probabtion.

To me it is also a safety issue. Look at what happens to some real reporters out there. Can you imagine if you get in the wrong place at the wrong time? You put yourself and anyone with you in arms way..Sorry but to me keep ireporting as a wonderful past time and hobby or take courses and apply to work as a professional reporter. Then at least you have some comfort in knowing you have your employer to protect you to a point with benefits etc..There are alot of really nasty people out there and not all very stable either..Just my opinion for safety..

@margot707 -- I don't think we are at a point, right now, that at probation or amnesty program would be a good idea. One of our biggest problems right now is banned users coming back and causing trouble.

I hope that we can do that at some point in the future though.

I don't think it is the same thing though as knowing they are serious and a second chance. I think if you commit the same offense that got you banished that is your only second chance and you are gone for good. Either that or make banishment temporary such as a week or a month.

April 23, 2009

@Ryn -- One of the reasons we're having these brainstorming sessions is so that we can try to solicit stories that ya'll want to tell.

We try not to solicit iReports on a topic if we're not going to do something with those reports.

So one of the best ways to increase your chances is to respond to one of our solicitations.

@davidw---

David, I know you've already got my first list(s) of nuts & bolts improvements for the site. Thanks for getting back to me on that.  I have a bunch more ideas, & other sites to mention that do similar things as here.

OpedNews.com has the preview window for uploading stories, also a very sophisticated category system. CBSSportsline.com has a very well-developed user self-policing system, with more experienced users given tools for flagging etc.

I don't know if I'll get the chance to write another piece to put all my ideas together, but I hope so.

I also want to do a whole piece just on the big-picture question of what CNN ireport is all about, the way I see it.  This is part of the post-newspaper information evolution. I think you probably know that, but I think it's something that everyone else here should have a consciousness about.

I would put this idea somewhere in a statement of purpose if I were making a downloadable pdf user manual for ireporters. There should be a bunch of those, by the way.

Take care, all. Next time!

One other offhanded story idea. NASA. Does it need a revamp, are people losing interest, what should the primary focus be? Might be interesting correlation to the star trek topic. Some people have even mentioned it a little bit in those posts.

Just back to leave another comment @davidw---

If you looked at the comment MarieSager left for me in January, you might not get how important it was. Since I've never done much serious blogging or any social networking before-no facebook, myspace, twitter, any of that-I really didn't have a clear sense of how things work on a site like this.  So just by being friendly, Marie set a tone and showed me an example that spoke volumes.

I think what is best for the former vice president is to keep his mouth shut...he had a chance to speak or take action and do what was right when he was in power. This is not the time for point finger or looking for blame, i think the best solution here is putting arm around the new president by coming out with some new idea, and ways to benefit this country. They already done enough to this country by hurting us in lot of ways, employment rate been high, foreclosure, stock market,  and much more to talk about....

April 24, 2009

Hi guys,

I'm sorry I wasn't able to make the meeting, I can't get to the internet at work ): But I just wanted to share some ideas.

Techaholic

Are you or someone you know addicted to Twitter/Video Games/the Internet/Blackberry, or even....Ireporting?

Toys with a Tech Twist

Has your favorite childhood toy gone high tech? Should it have? Ex.  The Rubicks cube.  What the heck? I couldn't even figure the first one out, now it's gone techno!

We Can, But Should We?

Advances in technology, especially in the areas of health have come a long way, but it's raised some ethical issues for many individuals, families, and the medical field as a whole.  Various forms of stem Cell Research, Life Support, Genetic Testing, and extreme cases, such as "Little Girl X" have showed a lot of promise, but is it right? Where is the line and should we cross it?

That's about all I can think of, but hope to make it to the next meeting.

Here is my pitch:

There is a simple way to transport people on and under land and water, and in the air even to space.  I know you are thinking, "Don't we already have these inventions for transportation?"  It's too bad that all vehicles that need fuel to run will soon be recalled within the next couple of years due to damaging our environment.

How would we make such a vehicle, and how will it work you ask?

This invention has been right under our noses since the beginning of time.

A sphere has the potential to do much work with little to no effort on our part.

Imagine the destruction of the Tsunami from a few years ago; now picture yourself inside of my Solar Bubble while the ocean floor continues to crack all the way through.  We will literally have a ball, while the Earth self destructs in order to renew itself into the New World approaching us.

This Solar Bubble is the beginning to awakening the minds of all inventors all over the world, and soon this planet will become so advanced with technology that we will no longer recognize what we see today as the norm.

I know some people will be resistant about trading their vehicles and means of transportation for my invention, however they will soon realize the same the thing our forefathers realized back when the automobile came out.  Even though horses, carriages, and buggies served the purpose of getting them from point A to point B, taking a ride in a car was way more fun.  The same will be true about my invention.

My design is ready to go, and I have the steps for how it will work.  (top secret)

Let us stop the small talk right here and sale this to dealerships right now!  We don't want the next flood causalities to be on our hands.

I believe with all of my heart that we all need this right away in order to survive the natural disasters yet to come.  I am persistent beyond measure, and I will never give up. I will contact the media, and let them know who I am and what we need to do now.  I will also contact all automobile manufacturers to see if they might consider investing in my invention idea.

It is extremely serious............ (We will soon be in a state of emergency).

Thank you for time, and I look forward to working with you in the future.  My design is in the attachment above, and on my webpage in the link below.

Truthfully,

Tonisha Fortune
