The latest and greatest on CNN iReport, brought to you by Team iReport.
Next roundtable: Thursday, May 7th, at 2:30 p.m. ET
Thanks for participating in the iReport weekly roundtable blog.
We had a great conversation at last night's meeting and we're looking forward to another one today.
There's not a set topic for today's discussions, so we're looking forward to talking about your questions, comments and concerns. We'd also like to hear what you're working on, so let us know if you've got a cool iReport coming.
Hi everyone.
Hi DavidW
Hi davidw
Hi David
hi all
hey there iReporters!
Hi all! Looking forward to today's discussion.
Afternoon
@Davidw--can you do me a favor and send my pic to Anderson Cooper so he can see his Mom, then I can change my pic lol
Greetings all!
Alun
Afternoon, David, KCRep, and whoever else shows up while I am typing. LOL
@davidw..my first ?..Is there anyway we can put in our profile who is following us?
So while we're all waiting for the crowd to arrive, is anybody working on any cool projects they want to share?
Hi everyone
Hey everyone, glad to see you again.
I might be shooting the butterfly release May 23rd at a resort.
Good afternoon everyone..
@KCRep -- we'll pass it along. I see you posted it as an iReport, so we can send that link if you want to go ahead and change the image.
It was easier to find today's meeting. Thanks
Hola, crowd
I am waiting for you to put up the new tech stories we worked on last week, so I can do some of those.
@KCRep -- that sounds like it could be beautiful
I'm uploading some videos on Star Gazing right now
@davidw...great thank you!
Hi. Any updates on the rating system, newiest "refreshing" more often, biggger mail boxes, saved folder?? Thanks
I am working on a series of reports concerning the community victory garden that we are doing this year. I have been taking pics of everyone working in it, from the 3 year old to the adults. Hopefully the deer and rabbits don't eat everything and there will be a garden to post about.
I have some nice footage from the Reinassance Faire..Interested?
@MelissaF -- We're working on improvements to the profile page to give you more information. But I'm not sure where that is on the list.
Updating our Victory Garden reports is a good idea too.
I'd like to do a few more hard news posts but being on the West Coast, the East coasters seem to beat me to it. I don't want to be redundant.
@MelissaF -- I know that John is working on a citizen journalism story that was inspired, or at least influenced by the tech assignments.
Spontaneous < --- WHAT SHE SAID!!!
I'm uploading "the best hotel room in the world?" right now - well, it just stuck at 3%, so I'm starting again!
Alun
:-) Margot707
@MARGOT707 -- It won't be redundant, it will be your view of the event. No one else has that.
Thanks KCRep. I am excited because there are 3 families doing it together and we will all be canning together this summer, also. Anything that we cannot eat, or put up we will donate to a shelter, the senior citizen's center, or the food pantry. Margot, do it anyway, and add your take on it. You always have such great insight.
Was there anything special changed during the "downtime" of iReport today, please?
Alun
Hello all
@MelissaF and everyone - if you have a great idea for a story, I'd say go for it now! Just do it.
I'm here. Sorry to be late.
@Margot707 If you focus on your personal take on hard news, or how hard news stories may have an affect on you personally, then no one's going to beat you to it!
We want to see a variety of viewpoints from folks all over the U.S. and world.
Hi TJCIII, you made it!
@AlunHill....yes the grid changed, I'm not on it anymore :(
David We've lost several old time iReporters due to frustration with the bad behavior of stalkers and the one star raters. Any new on Ryn and AnnNonymous in particular?
zdan, any hope for the "draft" posting? :-)
Yes, got your mail spon - thanks for the reminder
I have a question. If your report gets stuck during upload, do you have to redo it or is there a way to simply try again. I have had that happen and it is frustrating to me, because I have had to start over from scratch.
@Spontaneous - Upgrades and developments to the site take time and a lot of effort from our tech team. We can't just change the rating system or make mail boxes bigger overnight.
I have a serious question and I thought here is a good place to ask it as the community is here and we can maybe find a solution???
I would like to know how it is that when you post an ireport that someone/anyone can come onto your post and start having comments removed that you are not even aware is happening to find this when you return to your post to see any updated comments. Instead you find your report changed! comments that are actually pertinant to the dialogue on the report and topc. How is this possible without the author even there?? I would think that the only way comments can be removed from a person's post is if they themselves flag the report violation and complain.. If the comments to not qualify under any rule breaking on this site..How and Why is this happenig? What is going to be done to stop this behaviour??thanks
Hey @MelissaF - regarding your profile suggestion. It's a great suggestion and on the list.
We're planning some updates to user profile pages very soon, likely next week. Highlights will include user "stats", including your number of stories, comments and followers!
Where's hhanks?
@Spon - The idea's been passed on to our development team. Like I said, changes take time.
I'm here @MelissaF
I fully understand that zdan. Just making suggestions that most iReporters want and didn't know if it was a possibilty. Sorry for asking.
I agree with margot, I am new here, and its disheartening to see many good posts get berated.
@tyson...way cool!
@hhanks....Hello!! And thanks again!!
@gilldreams -- There has been an issue with the comment violations function. It should be fixed in our next software deployment.
@ctss
I learnt the hard way - I often upload from my wireless laptop, so perhaps have more than average problems - but my tip is to always make a copy of your text - it's much quicker to go back and paste it back in, than re-write!
@KCRep
Giggle!
Alun
@hhanks...hey there..haven't seen you around lately..good to see you here!!
@ctlss that's a good point you brought up. Are you finding that you have to re-enter your info each time? As a quick temporary fix you can upload with minimal info and go back and edit.
@AlunHill no visible changes today I'm afraid. But behind the scenes, our developers laid the groundwork for some exciting improvements we hope to roll out next week. Fingers crossed.
I wondered what happened to them, Margot. I truly enjoyed their posts and comments.
@tyson
Will the iReporter be able to see who are his followers?
We love the suggestions, Spon. Keep em comin'!
@Margot77 -- I have not had a chance to talk to either of them since they deactivated. I do hope they decide to return at some point.
@tyson What's happening with the show Ireport? Anything new over there?
speaking of wireless uploads and ones that are unclaimed - Some of these are out of the ball park - have you developed some kind of prescreening based on key word "unclaimed"?
@Tyson
.. changes may include "user "stats", including your number of stories, comments and followers!"
Ace - most welcome!
Alun
Is there anything that the tech group is working on which will make the liberal leaning people on this news site a little more resistant to criticism?
Spon - all on your list of suggestions were a summary of what we would have asked ourselves.
@Staff...how about thinking of letting the iReporter decide if they want to have the STAR system on their reports, there could be an option of turning it off permanateley, of course they shouldn't be able to give star ratings if they choose not to accept them. How does that sound?
@infoaddict - I wonder as well. The are so many of those and many are doubles, porn, gore, etc. I was told CNN views everything before it's shown, is that still true. These unclaims take up pages and pages of doubles.
Yes, nsaidi. That is the problem that I am having. And sometimes it is an hour before I am informed that the upload failed. So when we go into edit mode, does it temporarily block the post from being viewed? Otherwise people won't see what we intend to post, but only a bare bones version, if we do it the way that you suggest.
@stocktrade8
Come on. Both side have those who show hypersensitivity.
@tyson..can you also add to the profile wish list that you get an email alert when you have been tagged on cnn?
David It's not like we're getting paid for this, but some of us may be on top of the boards, and then someone will come on and deliberately knock down the ratings. This doesn't happen to everyone, just a selected bunch of us, seemingly out of spite. I hope the rating system is one of the top priorities.
@EWillies1961
Thanks for asking, I should clarify. For the next upgrade, user profile stats will show the number of followers, but not who those follows are. We'd like to include that option in the future.
What other improvements would you like to see?
hey everyone.
beautiful day in nyc...
I think if the rating system has to stay it should be required to leave a comment with the rate.
hi all!
David, if you could send an e-mail or call Ryn and AnnNonomous (spelling?) that would make us all feel better.
@tyson
Could you allow limited HTML in profile so we can format it better than one large blob?
Is there a function that the tech group is working on so that I can prevent people's I-Reports from showing up on my computer.
Some people's views and stories are like bubble gum for the brain.
davidw » @gilldreams -- There has been an issue with the comment violations function. It should be fixed in our next software deployment.
David, comment violations function? Are you saying the reason for comments on topic on an ireport posting being removed is a mal function of the report violation on the comments section of the ireports pages?
When will the next software deployment be happening and when will this be corrected? In the meantime what are we all supposed to do, keep copying all our comments before they get deleted? It seems to happen more on weekends.
@Spontaneous Just to be clear, CNN vets and approves all iReports that are stamped "On CNN."
Many of the unclaimed iReports and the spam are not approved for CNN. Does that make sense?
Hello guys.
Hi Davidseamna.
Hi Sintheeesize
Boy is it happening Margot707!!
@Margot707 -- It is one of our top priorities and it should be taken care of very soon.
Our developers have been working on it, but it's kind of like tearing down a wall in your house.
You have to make sure that it isn't attached to anything that will make your roof cave in.
I'm sure that's a cringe-inducingly oversimplified analogy.
@alun, thanks!! Don't know why I didn't think of that meself. And I use a wireless laptop also, so any other tips you have would be much appreciated. Not too terribly computer saavy. LOL
Hi Sinth and David
I personally don't mind the rating system anymore.
Once you realize the fact that "one star" or "five stars" really has no bearing on anything whatsoever, other than a possible ego trip, it's fine.
I've seen my low-rated stuff appear on, and my high rated stuff not go anywhere.
Oh, I'm not talking about "On CNN" katie, just regular posts on the page. Thanks
To everyone asking. The rating system is our top priority and you can expect an update soon. We're asking our developers to disable it while we work on new ways to showcase and highlight content on iReport.com.
I agree with spon, I think you should have to leave a comment, or at least show that the person marked you down. People have removed some great posts of the top ratings just to be mean or ignorant.
I mean really....... some people do not put any thought into their stories at all and post like 20 stories in a day.
I made it. Am I too late?
hi infoaddict
It certainly is, Margot and Spontaneous.
Katie what I am suggesting is that the system could be programmed to put aside whatever it is classifying as unclaimed so that it can be reviewed later before getting into the mainstream. Is that possible?
VERY LATE OC :)
hi kc
ctlss...go to your local beauty shop and ask for some of their hair clippings...put them around the perimeter of your garden...animals smell human and it keeps them away...do it every week to 2 weeks.
I have noticed a lot of good people are not posting on Ireport lately. I feel the rating system is ruining this whole experience. Just end it all together.
Hi OCGirl, we're here until 3:30 p.m. ET.
@MelissaF
@tyson What's happening with the show Ireport? Anything new over there?
What show are you referring to, "iReport for CNN"?
Sounds like you all feel that there is some good content that maybe doesn't get the attention it deserves because of the star rating. So aside from the rating system, what are some ways we can help the good stuff rise to the top? Can you give us some ideas of things we can do with the tools we have right now? Perhaps highlight things on the blog?
Please share ideas on how iReport content can be used and enjoyed.
OC...Hi
David
I think if the rating system has to stay it should be required to leave a comment with the rate.
I agree. Anyone who leaves gibberish along side their name just to post a one star would look childish and end up being banned.
Think about if we got rid of the rating system, then I would have to take the time to comment on all the stories which I did not like.
Then peoples feelings would really be hurt.
Hi KC
If the commputer software you have is already tagging things "unclaimed" it stands to reason it could also move it to a holding area for review. Thanks for the support Spon. It's terrible.
Thanks for all your profile page suggestions. Will pass along to our developers and see what we can do.
hhanks@ Can we do an ireport grading the media on covering Swine flu?
I know we have tags but separate iReports better, like on tabs or different pages. It takes hours to go through next...next...next. Some people are new that I don't "follow".
Thanks sintheeesize. If I had known that I would have brought some home with me. Just had 4 inches trimmed off two days ago. Darn!! I will ask them and for anyone who is interested, go to you local coffee shop and ask for the used grounds. Work them into the soil, EXCELLENT fertilizer, and the worms love them and so do their bit to keep the soil lose.
@tyson..yes Ireport for CNN
david I understand completely. It's like that building in NYC that crumbled while undergoing renovation.
If you see potential in someone's post but it doesn't quite make it why not send them an email saying what they could do better next time.
@infoaddict Unclaimed iReports are those that have been e-mailed to ireport@cnn.com. Some users have to send Reports via e-mail in breaking news situations. This morning, for example, this iReport (http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-252240) was unclaimed before the user claimed it as their own.
Anything that comes into the site shows up automatically. We try to highlight some of the best material with the "On CNN" view, and hope for other ways to showcase quality iReports in the future.
Like any good editor, I'd rather see CNN select more "fresh selections" and also we do have them put in by subject, by time/date and most viewed and most shared. Most viewed would let you know what is popular. I don't think a rating system is appropriate to the free flow of ideas. There is too much room for misuse of the system.
@nsaidi....I don't see the benefit of the star rating at all, I think the comments and views are the only thing that should be played into on a report, that shows the interest of the report.
@nsaidi
I do mostly political slanted posts on just about every issue. I think a menu of that type should be made.
1. Politics (News & Opinion)
2. Showbiz
:
:
etc
Or an op piece of the recent budget?
Can everyone raise their hands to tell me how much they hate the rating system?
@OCGirl that's one of the reasons we've started a "tips" category on our blog! christina (zdan) posts a new tip each week.
Stocktrade8 I'd rather someone leave a scathing remark that's pertinent to the report than just leave a 1 star fly by with no comment.
Margot the comment you make on the rating system is affecting the posts when that one star person does that too..then they and friends I suppose flag repeatedly to get comments or posts removed..It is very frustrating and stupid..The people are amoung us and to be so diceitful and fake is quite frankly disgusting. I have been here since September 2008. I do not follow anyone, I go to posts that interest me..That is what is so great about this site. You can be free to go where you like make your comments and build dialogue etc well until recently..Now if you make a comment and someone sees it weather on their post or any post they have it removed! Please make this nonsense stop! The people doing this are still on this site posting and it is like they are exempt from what anyone else would be removed or banned from this site for..sorry but this is affecting people and there are now posts on this topic. It is very disruptive and wrong.
Ok thanks rachel8
"Unclaimed" are sending in body parts that make it through
I'm Doc Dodson. I am overwhelmed by the support I'm getting for telling the truth. {THANK YOU!}
I was angered before at being verbally attacked after expressing my outrage at same sex crimes against children, as being particularly and specifically horrible. Exclusive, and regardless of what normally goes on, and by whom. Even to my disgust at being insultingly, and disrespectfully, checked out, 'sexually' by men, in public restrooms or locker rooms, where the dignity and mutual respect of men, is expected. (Regarding Military showers as well.) Three times, I was banned for saying homosexuality is a sin, just like the Bible says. Also, that homosexuality, as an act, is offensive to the non religious natural order.
Those who find themselves 'inseparable' from the 'distinctly' different nouns, flagged my post as offensive. Thus manipulating CNN, into taking a flagrantly biased, and cowardly response.
Initially I felt insulted. Now I just laugh.
I'm not here to be famous. I'm not here to sell my book. [Shameless Plug http://www.wordclay.com "Ghost of the Fallen."] I was here to post entertaining ideas, news, and hopefully, helpful comments, since early 2008.
On topic: Talk about being suicidal, and picked on.
I've been there. However, spoiling a child allows vunerabilities to continue. Possibly into mental health issues. Getting my but kicked made me adapt and to overcome. I'm a better man for it.
Ergo the examples I've set forth. Inappropriate feelings are weeded out by discipline an regognition of the appropriate or inappropriate nature of your thoughts before you decide to act on them.
I was outraged at people who called children gay, as I was called gay, and consider it a form of child abuse, manipulation, and recruitment. Children, tomboys, feminine etc. are just children. Committing to an act defines you. Not just thinking about it, or feeling a certain way. I may feel like superman, but I'd better not jump off a high cliff.
Without that toughness of disciplined thought, all kinds of disgusting behavior proliferates. Read this as you will. It is truth, and not threatening unless something hidden, is threatened to be uncovered, like old wounds.
CNN Administrators! How do you respond?
Will you be biased, when I have not violated your terms of service as defined in what is not welcomed?
Will you yield to the overly sensitive and timid crys of those who apparently read into, or twist my comments into their perceptions of hate and fear?
As a man I'm used to strong conversations. Not cowards who delete and flee when confronted with the truth.
What say you, administrator? Here with all to see?
What say you?!!
I challenge and reveal homosexual crimes against children!
Will you cringe at the use of the word homosexual as a personification that incriminates you? (IT IS NOT!)
Or will you recognize it's use as solely definitive of the specific nature or the referenced crime?
Admittedly, when attacked, I have responded inappropriately on occasion. Chalk that up to self defense!
@OCGirl - Great minds think alike! We actually have a weekly blog post giving tips on how to make iReports better. Each week I pick one iReport that I liked and make suggestions for how to make it better. I try to post on Fridays. All these blog posts are in the tips category.
@EWillies1961 are you suggesting a subject matter division on your profile page? Sounds interesting.
@KCRep we're getting rid of the star system. It will be eliminated, soon enough.
Katie - I don't think I'm being clear in presenting my concern to you. I'll send you an e-mail or talk with you.
@EVERYONE -- The rating system is going away. Why don't we move on to another issue. Since this will be handled soon.
@infoaddict That sounds good. We'll talk offline :)
davidw@ thank you very much. Le's move on guys.
@nsaidi..I like ewillies1961 idea of having section tabs like that..
@nsaidi..........HIP HIP how do you spell hooray!!
@infoaddict - How can we best sort content? What metrics matter to you? This goes for everyone too.
gilldreams I don't understand what you're talking about.
I would like to work with a few other ireporters and do a topic of our own that isn't on the list. Can we do that?
@MelissaF
iReport for CNN is still going strong on CNNI.
We're all big fans of Errol Barnett and team.
Look for Errol to join us on the iReport blog soon.
And did you see they have a Facebook fan page?
Suggestion: The media should keep covering swine flu, non-stop, because I am spending more time in my building and less time running errands or working.
It will make me a more productive ireporter.
But seriously, here's an idea: what about a "book club" topic?
KC I was going type the same thing.
I was under the impression that once banned you were not allowed back under new id's DOCDODSON6. Did I miss something, David? Or am I mistaken?
@MelissaF, ewillies1961 -- Having section tabs is a good idea. We also try to get as many approved iReports as we can placed in the sections on CNN.com.
Our assignment page is divided by topics, so you can check those out too. http://www.ireport.com/community/assignment
Katie@ How about an Ireport on whether or not some members of the Bush Adminstration should be investiagted and tried?
hello everyone
Hello everyone! how's the day going? Question for iReport team? Can you make it so if we would like to delete a video or image that we can? Sometimes we may post a video and then later decide to take it down but right now we can't do that. Will this be a feature? Thanks. J.Son
Does anyone read books much? It's the net, CNN and iReports mostly.
Good Afternoon,
LadysHoodJnl in the House.
David I don't want to get into an argument with this guy here, but there is no such thing as what this guy "DocDodson6" describes.
Hi LHJ
Hi ky42
Hi Ladyshood
adriana-- I would like to see that, too.
a book club topic where we could talk about what books we are reading this month, and recommend them to other ireporters, would be cool I think.
Hey LadysHood
I wish there was a 'preview comment' feature. Sometimes I am committed to the enter key just as I realize I made a mistake.
@davidseaman We've tossed around the idea of a book club before. Love it! Any ideas how/what we could ask iReporters to submit that could be incorporated into CNN's news coverage (i.e. How to keep it timely or tied to the news?)
If you'd like to start this assignment, we'd love to see a video from you. Want to get the ball rolling?
How about reporting on addictions? Like, I'm addicted to iReports. I know I am LOL
Hi Ladyshood
Book club, I like it davidseaman. I love to read, and often read books again and again. Books are much better than movies.
@nsaidi
As the iReporter we select how to classify our post. You determine the 10 or so areas to select from. The general user of iReports could then click from an option on the top of the page the kind of stories they want. Currently you have "Latest", "Newsiest", "On CNN". I would like to see also "Political", "ShowBiz", "Consumer Electronics", etc. The iReporter would label their report to avoid you having the extra task. Of course if IReport.com deems the location innapropriate it can be changed.
Book club sounds fun.
ctlss...i lost count of how many banned ireporters were on this morning...the clue is if u look up their names and it says they just joined today and are already posting...hmmm...not too bright..eh?
Hi Spont
Spell check in comments??
Margot707 » Stocktrade8 I'd rather someone leave a scathing remark that's pertinent to the report than just leave a 1 star fly by with no comment.
Margot I responded just under your comment here..look up the page..the last part of the first sentence of my comment...just go read it.. in other words more than one thing happens when one star appears..comments are next in the line of nastiness..they get removed..
We could review the tags or subject headings - you update them from time to time. I can't remember but in the current list of tags being used, can't you click on the tag and be taken to the list? Like the heading that CNN gives you to file a story for their review and the tags they give us to use, they do update these and we could as well - they are sensitive to the tags we "invent." I think a more user friendly list of them with how they are used would be helpful. In other words, the basics are already on the site. They may not be understood by all. Also, many may not know that if you click on a tag next to a post, you will be taken to all the posts submitted under that tag.
@tuxchown You can edit your comments after they are posted. Have you tried that? A preview would be a nice feature, though. Thanks for suggesting.
@Davidw,
This question is for the person designatd to keeping the Superstar Board current.
PLEASE GET THE BOBBLE HEADS OFF THE BOARD.
Hey hey Nicole - Henry - Tyson - and all my iReport friends! Is everyone having a naked day?
Did you all see the Miss California press conference? Can someone please interview her for iReport? Does anyone know her? What a great iReport that would be!
http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-252526
@staff..I got an email from an HLN producer on The Views segment..he asked for me to contribute to this section, but they have not used any yet from me or anybody else. They are still using the email and telephone views. Have you heard anymore about this?
@Adriana That's another good topic. I'd encourage you to send your thoughts on the Bush administration whether or not we build an assignment, but we will definitely keep it on our list. Thanks!
@katie: Could recommend books that are pertinent to what's in the news.
for example, I'm reading some stuff about viral outbreaks right now... could be a post like "Swine Flu Book Club" talking about nonfiction books that are fun & relate to flu in some way
Someone I think it was halemalu mentioned before about enjoying during christmas when people show cased crafts and such. What about an offbeat category for posting crafts/recipes/etc...?
Hi OCGirl
Hello everyone! Checking in late!
Welcome @NakedBoyNews,
Yes, the ability to remove posts is in the works.
@Tyson
I do enjoy the "iReport for CNN" on CNNI.
Good to hear that Errol will be around here soon, too - love his enthusiasm - would love to see you 2 do more together, too! Great double act...
Can you pass to the team, though, that the UK broadcast times are not correct for Saturday's show - and SkyTV in the UK still insist it's hosted by some Aussie called Holmes (of BackStory fame)!
Alun
@hhanks sorry didn't mean to dup.
@infoaddict -- The tags are there to make it easier for users to sort or find information. You can add any tab you like, as long as it doesn't violate our community guidelines.
Cool, thanks tyson!
@DocDodson6
The majority of the people on here are Liberal Leaning including the CNN staff.
You will not find open an honest debate unless you happend to agree with the poster on:
Pro Obama Issues
Bash Palin Issues
Root For a Heart Attack on Chaney
Root For War Crime Trial for Bush.
Support the need to protect Terrorists from multiple forced showers.
Support Prop 8 In every state.
Tear down the wall in Mexico
Did i leave anything out????
True, sinth, true. And the only thing they are interested in is making mischief.
@infoaddict Are you suggesting improvements to our tag system? What problems do you encounter and what could be done to fix them?
@Tyson. - Thanks. I look forward to all the new features you guys got cookin for us! I Heart iReport!
@VickyHolder I love the idea of a recipe category! We've done stuff like that before - like at Christmas, we had a homemade/crafty gifts category, and we did a "recipes under $10" category - so I fully expect we'll do more of it in the future.
I think we should do away with the super star system as well. I think one say I saw "featured iReporters" - I liked that.
@davidseaman That sounds fantastic. I'll send you an e-mail with a few follow-up ideas, but we should be able to build the assignment soon (you'll get kudos, of course)
@MelissaF,
I'm sorry to hear that. I think in may ways, the HLN team is still learning how to best incorporate your iReports into their coverage. I'm forwarding your concerns directly to the HLN production staff now.
@DavidW. CNN admin. My post was specifically to you. No one else need apply. I'm waiting.
David The grouping at the left of the page has the most popular currently used tags which includes iReporters names. This gets overwhelming at times. Could this be changed?
stockade8
Your tripping.
I lost my star this morning..Gone...No more~!
Naked Boy News...Thanks for help to make my point.
nsaidi, I don't believe we can edit our comments on someone else's posts. Once there the errors are there in perpetuity.
nsaidi - you asked for metrics. I think the metrics are already there and in practice. I think how major categories and tags are presented (visually) and instructions about how they can not only be used for uploads but can take you to the kinds of reports you would like to see - the how to of it - could be clearer so that what we have now is used to better access reports.
@alunhill I will pass that on.
Why would you want it changed Margot707?
What I mean is, if someone wants to follow an iReporter, they can. Should an iReporter add their ID name as a tag?
Thanks @AlunHill!
I'll pass along broadcast time concerns to Errol and company!
Is this normal?
@LadysHoodJnl -- We do have a couple of iReporters near the top of the newsiest list, who are pretty new, and have not yet built up their profiles. They got there on the strength of some pretty strong stories.
I'm hoping they'll be back soon and start playing a bigger role in the community.
Margot and I have just hit on the same point - the pages are not always user friendly (organization of text, font, etc.)
@adriana71 no worries
@ctlss
Just made an interesting discovery - I think nsaidi recommended it and it works - add a title, add anything in the comment box - ignore the rest - upload the film.
If it sticks, start again - if it uploads, you can then go in and easily add text, location etc - brilliant - will save me hours!
I think I'm correct that you can amend your text etc at any time - with the exception that if you have the "on CNN" logo, any changes must, understandably, be approved by iReport staff.

@stocktrade8 the conversation on iReport.com is driven by site users -- ordinary folks -- and as such, it's not a scientific forum. It's simply a representation of who is on the site and feeling like making a post or comment.
If you feel like your viewpoint isn't being represented, we want to encourage you to speak out and make your own post.
We've seen spirited debates on many issues, and the results and outcomes can sometimes be surprising.
@Margot707 The tag cloud is a good way to search through iReports on a specific topic. Many CNN editors use this to look for iReports on a specific news topic. It's unfortunate when iReporters abuse the system by tagging posts with their screen name and definitely not encouraged.
Some people add their name as a tag just to see their name and face all over CNN. When you actually look at what they contribute its just volume and not have anything to do with quality content that people actually want to see.
You should award super star status based on number views per page. The more you post the better your reports should be or else you will be dropped off the least.
Just posting hundreds of reports should not get you rewarded.
Just like the guy who files hundreds of FRIVIOULS law suites.
No one is thrilled when he files another one.
For me (speaking for me), I like to add my name as a tag, others do it. Yes we can follow as well. Just my thoughts
@DocDodson6 -- I'm sorry I had to do that so publicly, but you have been banned several times before and I'd like for us to use this time to talk with the rest of the community.
@Davidw,
Since you cannot force compliance to the newbys or others still choosing to hide behind a bobble head; atleast prohibit their climb to the Superstar Board.
Isn't an avatar and bio the minimum standard in here?
Else your talking to a ghost.
anybody think about adding an ireport iphone app?
Margo, many of us already use tags on our stories - rather than mix the tags that are subjects with the tags that are the ID's how about an alpha listing by ID? That would make it easier to see the body of work someone has done and also make it easier for us to contact them.
@TJCIII -- An iPhone app is in the works. Not sure of an ETA.
I have a problem when I post that I usually pretype my ireports out in word then cut and paste. My problem is that at least on my end I can only cut and paste if I use html. If I leave it on the settings which always me to use the bold and italics and organize while typing I can't cut and paste. Can you fix this?
@davidw..remember that email I sent you a couple of weeks back about 7 different tags instead of just ON CNN, you can have ON CNN.COM, ON HLN, CNN ESPANOL, etc..just following up to make it easier for us to track how our material was used.
@tyson Thanks for forwarding that to HLN..much appreciated. I submitted on That Miss California doesn't need to apologize and I still have 2 guys debating on it even today...and I put that in last week...lol..
i had an idea for assignments...for those who have traveled...what was the wierdest thing u have ever eaten or seen people eat?
LadysHoodJnl - I think they should at least be required to make a minimum of 3 posts with a picture and text. And yes, there should be more info about them to a point. If you are not a contributor, why are you here?
I have the same problem Vicky
Really katie, I didn't know that. Many do it. Did you know that the ones that do??
@Spontaneous The point of the tag cloud is for people to find news topics that may be interest to them. We'd really appreciate it if you (and any other users) didn't use it to promote yourself on the site.
@sintheeesize That sounds like a good idea for our "offbeat images" topic. If you have a photo along the lines of what you're suggesting...please submit it there!
@DocDodson,
LadysHoodJnl Copy.
@LadysHoodJnl -- It's not a requirement, but it is nice to see who we're talking to.
I don't think they're hiding behind the avatar, I think they're just new.
And since the Stars reset more frequently now, if they're not active, they will move down the board quickly.
Another topic.. Will the Repbublican Party Split into two?
@Davidw,
Thank you for your reply.
Hi..I did an i report to raise awareness that kids are still subject to corporal punishment in schools, legal in 21 states.. paddeling. Newsweek just did 2 articles on it. Ironic it's national child abuse prevention awareness week.
@MelissaF -- I haven't forgotten about the idea. We haven't worked it out yet though.
I don't know if that would work or not.
We're talking about it with the TV folks though and working on a solution.
I would like to be able to have a preview of the entire post before it is submitted mostly for the photos..someitmes they are not as I would hope them to be. I do not have a video as yet..so I rely on still photos...for now..
Katie Thanks. Could there be instructions on how to add tags? For example, I see some people adding {plane down in hudson} as 4 words instead of plane_down_in_hudson so it doesn't get grouped with the others.
stocktrade, I take that as an insult. I have been here for a long time and my numbers can only go up--nothing I can do about that. Many love my posts. Numerous iReporters are not just news and I feel we get the shaft alot. Just my thoughts
@adriana71
Or Is the Republican Party viable!
@davidw..I was hoping that you were going to do that to doc..
I am with Spontaneous on this.
I didn't realize you could not use you name as a tag. I thought everyone did it to bring your body of work together for everyone to more easily see in a search. I find searching on that tag is easier. Can we have something that does the same thing? I will stop using the tag if its not "legal."
@gilldreams -- A preview function is a good idea and something else that is on our list.
katie, for me (can't speak for anyone else), I don't do it to promote myself but the post only. Could this be posted or tols to EVERYONE?? This happens everyday and is going on right now. I wasn't aware of this and wouldn't have done it if I were. I am not here for promotion but the love of posting. Thanks
I would like to be able to delete the failed uploads off the "my stuff" page, is there a way to do that?
Random Story Idea that may be too pop culture but going to suggest it anyway...What do you listen to or what's on your ipod?
OC and Spontaneous I TOTALLY agree with you on this point.
@MonicaToups
I requested that 2weeks ago. Please admin, it will make MyStuff easier to read.
The Republican Party will be fine if the Moderates take over!
@MonicaToups - We can delete them, let us know which ones you want deleted.
I agree infoaddict
@Margot707 Multiple-word tags should be connected by underscores. I think there are instructions on tags when you upload iReports, but we can explain the importance of tags further if you're interested.
I know we have a topic on schools already, but lots of kids are wrapping their state tests, to find out if the get promoted or not. Is the test fair and what did parents do to prep kids?
I feel like someone in here came under another name just to harass people here. Just my feeling.
Thanks David..preview function sounds great!!
@The Board,
Early on in this system, there were no watch doggs in here and I'm here to say that a stranger, by the name of: DocDodson, came to my rescue when LadysHoodJnl was surrounded by an angry mob regarding prop8.. The Man saw a Woman surrounded by 20 gay men on the board - all hostile and DocDodson showed open support (with strenght) and they stood down. That's my experience with DocDodson and I hate to see him go.
LadysHoodJnl Reporting
@MonicaToups -- I need to look into that. If you could send me the links, I'll see what I can find out.
@hhanks
Who should I send a message to for deletion?
Amen @Stocktrade8,
I'd like to see some members of our blooming iReport community concentrate on quality posts, over quantity.
The superstar rating is tied to a users activity. Page views are a big part of the rankings. Do you think we should give it more weight? Or perhaps something else?
@stocktrade...I know what you are talking about.
What @davidw said
@LadysHoodJnl -- Thank you for that. I appreciate your loyalty. I don't think anybody's banning should be celebrated.
InfoAddict There is a Search feature now, but it's overwhelming to thumb through. The quick search at the top of the screen is better, but it's case sensitive.
@MonicaToups and NakedBoy brought this up too, we don't currently have a delete function -- it's been brought up a lot, though. One issue that crops up is that iReport.com is a live production environment and we often link things off CNN.com. So we're looking for solutions for how we can give users control over their posts while also maintaining stability. But yeah, let davidw know or any one of us and we can help you out.
@infoaddict Users can see you entire body of work by clicking on your profile.
We can discuss this later if you'd like to as well. It's not a rule that you can't tag iReports however you wish, but it's strongly discouraged since it's a valuable tool for CNN staffers who look to highlight your newsy iReports.
Explain it to me then
I think there is too much emphasis on the super stars attached to screen names..
We should just add what we feel good about, or not.. And not worry so much about who has the star and who doesn't.
Who posts more or who doesn't.
It's just fun to be here.
@EWillies1961 -- You can send them to me at david.williams@turner.com and I'll see what I can do.
David - so many of the problems that are cropping up have to do with lack of clear instructions about how to use mechanisms already on the site. Could a few of us who have those concerns have a telecon with someone to try to present ideas with more time to do it?
@davidW from Me.
I don't believe your sorry at all. I think you enjoyed that. When you're ready for a mature dialog and a striaght answer, this mail box will be open.
Or, just do that again. Those who see, like your boss, will respond appropriately.
BTW, anyone here on Twitter?
How many people see an iReport before it is posted? And who are the people who keep putting one star on any gay related video?
Also, can I put up an iReport in Spanish?
I'm on twitter
David, the weekend is upon us and on weekends over the past weeks there seems to be an increase on banned people returning to cause havoc all over the site..How many monitors of the site work on any given weekend? Also Who gives them the okay to remove comments from posts? Reason I ask is I notice that ordinary comments get removed that have not been arguemenative or nasty in any way..It seems just because...that comments get removed..So if this is the case how can we have freedom of speech? free to express ourselves in a conversation if at any given moment because someone has no clue what is going on..they see a comment that they automatically think is about them, which it never is, then have it flagged by friends and the comment/s are gone..so then the report looks ignorant!
@davidw
Thanks.
@katie
Is newsiest determine by human or some other calculation?
how do these people keep coming back???
@tyson....thank you..it's not youtube,facebook,twitter, it's ireport for news worthy stuff..this is not a social site it's a news site.
tyson It seems that a "Newbie" can get a fuzzy photo of a hot topic on CNN on the first upload, get 13,000 views and go to the top of the boards, while someone who has been here for months, putting up quality posts, with lots of comments and debates and still stay down towards the bottom. Doesn't seem quite right.
@Davidw & iReport Team;
Thank you for actively watch dogging the system now.
@MsLaReina, in fact @EWillies1961 just did one.
@EWillies1961 It's based on an algorithm that measures page views, comments, and so on. We have no control over what's Newsiest.
sintheeesize »
Yeah that was almost too funny~!
i don't twitter yet
@gilldreams -- I don't want to go into too much detail about that. I will say that some users have figured out how to game the comment violations feature. That problem will be taken care of in our next deployment.
Here's the link to the iReport en Espanol assignment:

@tyson
Twitter addict here (http://twitter.com/EgbertoWillies)
@Tyson
I'm on Twitter - love it
"alunhill", of course!
Alun
@MsLaReina,
iReport posts go straight to the site. The iReport moderators are often among the first t see your submissions. They don't take part in rating or commenting on stories, however.
BTW - as discussed in an earlier thread - the rating system is going to be disabled soon while we work on a better tool.
Best,
Tyson
@everyone It's 3:30, which means we need to wrap up the conversation soon. See you next week.
@tyson..i am @athena8 on twitter
MsLaReina I hear ya!
Thanks for the awesome conversation all!
@infoaddict We may be doing some smaller chats in the future. I'll be testing video chats pretty soon. Anyway, that's a good suggestion. Please everyone, let us know what things make sense and what don't.
okay David..I understand.
Quantity iReporters do post quality posts. iReports is more than news.......you give us the assignments. Thanks CNN Team
@Davidw,
On the contrary; I still celebrate Dr. Jazz exit.
@MelissaF,
cool, I'm @Twheat
So you in the Twittersphere
@everyone..bye all!! Happy Ireporting!
David I'm glad that the rating system will be disabled and revamped very soon. Thanks for that.
Hard to do video chats and tele conf when you are at work
@everyone -- Thanks for a great discussion. Have a great week.
I hope everyone has a blessed day. Take care and thanks to all of the staff for helping us the best way you can.
signing off.... @nsaidi everywhere
Bye y'all
Bye rating system and happy posting! Thanks CNN :-)
Spon that is a drawback but there are a lot of things like those noontime live stream assignments some get, etc. How do you get around that? It isn't as if those at the telecon will get priority of any kind. You could do a phone in in the evening with a producer or whatever. Maybe even a call at lunchtime. It is the same problem with the roundtables, so many work schedules make attending them difficult as well. I don't think in terms of excluding anybody just in getting the info exchanged in a clear way because I have problems expressing myself in type sometimes. I'm dyslexic.
bye guys!
OK infoaddict. It was just a comment. Whenever, whatever
I am on twitter, tyson. And David, I think Doc is back again.
I vote for only 5 (FIVE) news stories a day.
If you have more than 5 things to report on it can wait until tomorrow.
am I late again?
later alligators!
I know this concept will just totaly destroy someones life if they are only able to post 5 stories a day.
But maybe if they spent more time on their story more people who click to see what they have to say.
Just a thought....
You dont see Christiane Inompour (sp) posting 20 stories a day.
After while crocodiles.. now let's move these doggies out.
hummmmm, guess I missed the whole thing again.
Hey nice talking with ya'll again.
bye
stocktrade8....you sound like mrfloridad (banned). CNN allows us to post as many as we want. Most here are not here for clicks but for the love of posting. Try it, you'll like it
hi i arrived late thanks that spontaneous told me how are you all take care and DavidW can you contact me please via email thanks larena
Test
Late as usual but I dont mind a late entry.
This was an interesting exchange. The longest and most passionate post was not answered. Personally I'd like to see an answer. Doc described being flagged and banned by cowards.
Post reference:
http://www.ireport.com/tags/the_question_of_criminal_intent
If a teacher commits a crime with a child, all teachers do not personify the incrimination. So why was he banned for reporting a crime, and identifying the nature of the crime as being homosexual. It's fairly obvious to me, that when a man assaults a little boy, it is a homosexual act. How can you interpret that as hate toward a group and band him, unless the entire group is actually guilty of the crime?
Finally: Please post your answer openly on the next meeting for everyone. What specific terms of service or community violations require a band restriction.
Roger that Iperfect.
These gays are off the chain in here... as if they can just MAKE you condon their unnatural acts.. they can get the hell out my face with it and just like Miss Cali I don't apologize for what I know to be correct: Man should lay down with a Woman only..or it's freeky deeky.
As a matter of fact this place is infested with them.. I like being around swine flu better.
i would like to know why we have not seen more about the hexavalent chromium found in Cameron,MO???? I wish CNN would do a story on it....
On February 3, 1983, I was expelled from Poland, after spending 6 weeks in hiding and one week in a Polish jail. The Polish Government accused me of working for the CIA. When I went to the American Embassy, they turned their backs on me and handed me over to the Polish Secret Polish (SB). I have over 200 pages of documents relating to my life as an American living in Poland during the tumultuous the period 1977 - 1983 and my Polish Solidarity friends. I have recently made some of this material available on my website http://www.garretstar.com/secciones/misc/ I thought that I might be able to make an IREPORT for CNN, but uploading text is not supported.
