We'll kick off today's roundtable session with a simple question that should spark a pretty interesting discussion.

We'd like to know why you joined the iReport community and why you stay. Your answers will help us as we work to make our community even better.

I like to do and read iReports because it's entertaining to me.  It gives me insight into what's going on in the world that I would not be informed of otherwise.  This is a great forum for just about anything, from news, politics, art, entertaiment, gardening, personal stories and so much more.  I want to thank CNN and the iReport staff for this.

May 14, 2009

Why do I ireport???  I do so because I love the opportunity to share information with others, Sound Off on political issues and dialog with others on more diverse issues.  My next issue will deal with the upcoming vacation season and the energy cost associated with my plans.

May 14, 2009

To answer the question, I iReport because I thought I could make some type of difference in my community.

I iReport because I feel like it's not only a good place to share whats happening around me, but it also gives me a place to express how i feel about what's happening in the world and the response I get on here is much better than if I posted on another site, such as YouTube for example.

I am a very political person and engaged in events that have material effects on people. This IReport forum has given me the opportunity to

1.     Give my informed opinion on many issues.

2.     Learn from the many points of view. I actually enjoy the back and forth of ideas.

3.     Hopefully nudge CNN to look at issues that affect us all that they may not have been aware of.

It is so peaceful in here without the ratings. THANK YOU. You don't see any "help me/bashing" posts it seems.

May 14, 2009

Why do I stay with ireport?  Hate messages notwithstanding, I remain because I refuse to be moved by those that seek to do me or this site venue any undue harm.  This is also an opportunity to explore the world without leaving the house.  I just love the idea of having a voice in our national politics and events.

NejNol, which consists of 2 very different individuals delivering an agreed upon point of view, wishes to depict a different perspective that many may not be familiar with. I like being able to feedback to editors and reporters when I feel the tough questions or even follow-up questions are not being asked. I think all iReporters really care about a free press that is the watchdog for the people.

@katie in every possible way.  Because when we post on topics that are currently happening in the news, and people come to iReport it's easier for people to find the videos they are looking for, as if we went to youtube, there are so many videos about every topic it's very hard to get people to watch sometimes.  And as much as I hate all the mean and rude comments I get, I love it at the same time because I feel like my opinion is being heard and is causing controversy with the people watching it!

@EWillies we're glad to have you on board. With political issues as well as with everything else (but politics especially) it's great to see passion for what's going on around you.

I also think it's interesting that you mentioned that you want to "nudge CNN." Is it important for citizens and news orgs to be involved in a conversation, and why?

May 14, 2009

The numbers of views and comments do seem down a bit but I feel it's the TRUE opinion of iReports now. The ratings ONLY de-rated people and gave them to one-star. It's a peaceful site now in my opinion. Thanks

May 14, 2009

I see more harassment since the elimination of the ratings, but at least we can face these people. There are certain individuals who seem to bear the brunt of the harassment for no reasonable cause.

Now for the answers you seek:I stopped Ireporting, as my camera has quit on me, and I am just too poor to get another one. I really only related one real news story here anyway(the one where a storm destroyed most of what I owned) so my works were a waste of bandwidth anyway. I have however began replacing the text portion of my stories with somewhat related blogs in an effort to kill time whilst waiting for my favorite TV shows to come on.

I think the pros in the biz call it timekillers?

DavidW- As for the food issue-Would you like to borrow my teleportation machine so you can send everyone here a steak?

I ireport as a way to share my point of view on the news that I see, and to share interesting things that I might stumble across in the course of my daily life.  I also enjoy reading what other think, and although I don't comment on every report I read, I read a lot of them and take in what their points of view are and attempt to see things from their perspective.  Each section of the country is impacted differently by what goes on in the world and this country.  It is interesting to see the different ways that people interpret what they see and hear.

May 14, 2009

I learned the hard way that something I think is interesting might not interest others.  I went way out of my way to go to the Nixon Library, pay to get in, shoot it, edit the pictures, and put them on 4 separate ireports due to the amount of pictures I took, I did them in an order of viewing, I hardly had any views at all.  This was a little dissapointing for me, but I learned something.

May 14, 2009

I have noticed that Margot.  It's unfortunate that people have to attack people like you.  You have done no harm and only come with truth in fact.

You have taught me a lot with your posts and comments, very much appreciated

May 14, 2009

Nsaidi: I'm mostly an observer/commentator.  I've posted "an" Ireport, and i feel i will continue to post them, but only for public issues that i feel havent been covered (as standard news usually sees 10+ ireports from different people throughout the day). I prefer to try and make unique reports that still relate to most people's lives, obviously this limits my options on what to post about, but its a self limitation.

As for site participation, the more people the better as there is a better spread of opinions, but i find a majority of people on this site cannot be sociable or polite under any circumstance and that is where the breakdown occurs.

May 14, 2009

You usually can tell who the dupes are by the what they say and how they say it.

@nsaidi

I think it is extremely important for the producers to engage with us as we can bring points of views and events growing into a groundswell before the MSM get to it. As an example Single Payer Healthcare is an issue that has been having a problem gaining traction even though a large plurality of people has been trying to get this issue covered. Over the last few days MSM has begun rotating it more often and President Obama actually got a question through on this issue.

This is my first ireport, but world needs to see how the less fortunate like myself live. I am unemployed and voted for President Obama, but now I am personally wondering was it the right thing. I have worked since i was 16, my father has been ill since Aug of 08, my job was advertised the same week I asked for family leave and now I cannot get unemployment because of a clause in the unemployment law and his office (whitehouse departments) Labor, civil rights, and whitehouse have all been rude on every occasion I have called. If this is what you want to call transparency then we should have kept the Republicans in charge. Not one article or news story has shown what about people like me who have worked, and are denied unemployment? Because no one gives a damn not even the commander and chief.

@JoyfulGypsy, @everyone - We're looking to engage iReporters in head-to-head discussions using video chat. What kind of topics would you like to debate?

May 14, 2009

@Team iReport:  A lot of times I feel like being on the Television or CNN.com is an important goal for the iReport division; however, can iReport be its own entity?  I try to make my own iReports self-contained and direct people from my other social networking sites to my posts, whether or not is has “On CNN” or not, at least people can see my report and CNN is getting traffic to its site.  Win Win situation for all.

May 14, 2009

I agree, TJ. As I said, you can usually tell who the dupes are. They need to be IP banned but even so, some people can get around that. We can also diffuse them by not engaging them. (although I will admit that I don't always follow that policy, lol)

"One of the things we are working on is finding better ways to highlight interesting things on the site." -DavidW

Good on that, however i think the reverse also needs to be true, and while i realize this is my mere personal opinion, the ireports system needs some sort of determining factor between "newsiest" and something thats not newsy, but just outright controversial. I'm not sure what algorythm you guys are using for those determinations, but sometimes the most inane and senseless things do end up on "newsiest"

May 14, 2009

I came to iReport in March of 2008 during

Autism Awareness Week. It was a brand new site at that time. After my first post I was hooked.

I enjoy the lighter side of iReport photography, travel, nature, human interest, local news from different folks. I love the assignment page, but wish it was updated more often.

I do read headline news and some times will comment, if I feel I have something to add. I have learned so much from others.

DavidW: I think it could easily be a tad more balanced with less complaints if something similar to the "Digg" algorythm was used.  The problem with the stars wasnt that people could or couldn't rate negatively, its that it was a public rating system.  People wouldn't complain about the stars (as much) if they didnt see "Oh someones one starred me" rant in an ireport. While you would still have vindictive users (and i'll admit i'm not innocent from one starring peoples reports just because i thought they were idiots) the reverse is also true where people wouldn't even read the content but would just 5 star anyone who was their friend or showed something in a positive/negative light that they agreed with, regardless of content.

A hidden rating and balance system in this manner (where people still "give" a rating but no one sees it) would, in my opinion, be far more effective at filtering the good reports and would reduce a majority of the "rating system" complaints.

I would like to see a little more production content and thought put into I-Reports I am starting to learn how to edit video and add words/graphics.

I believe if more people put more effort into their reports.  People would get more views and better discussion.

Point taken.... CNN probably cannot do anything about the address etc. If that ever becomes an issue the powers that be would likely discontinue the service than worry about some liability. We have to be on our own in that particular situation.

@Davidjw @Margot707 -- We like to keep things fresh, but some topics take a while to percolate. Often we have topics that start out slow, but then great stuff starts pouring in.

In other cases, we're planning to use them in a longer term project, so we let things run longer.

That's why we keep asking for assignments for longer periods.

Hi everyone. I pulled myself away from drawing board long enough to let everyone know that the reason I submit work is because I truly enjoy the feedback. It's great to read all the comments I receive even if they don't agree with my point of view. ireport was my first opportunity to expose my work to a world wide audience and it's been a great experiance. Now I'm on Facebook, Linkedin, twitter and a few other sites.

The rating system stymied me in a way.  If someone I really liked put up an inane report, I would give them a 5 star rating and leave an inane comment.  Now, I don't have to worry about the star, I can leave a comment that I feel is fitting to the report and not loose that person as a friend.

when I first started I wasn't sure what ireporting would lead to. In the time I have done a number of reports from the virtual community of Second Life, and soon from another platform, Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft. In the meantime I have noticed my reporting gotten better and better up to the latest I submitted from a week ago. In the hopes that this may lead to an oppurtunity with ireport or CNN in the near future. (shrugs)

DavidW: Alright, just wanted to check in on that issue, as i didnt see anything on it.

Back a bit more on topic, has there ever been any consideration.. (and i realize this is supposed to be a news site with freely flowing information).. putting a limit on Ireports posted per person on a 24 hour basis? I end up seeing alot of duplicate ireports getting posted by the same person.  That along with similar Ireports, and i believe a system like that would encourage people to be a bit more thoughtful about their content and not just throwing out what comes to mind and then thinking of something later to add to it. (And i realize there is an edit option for the ireports, but quite a few times i see it isnt utilized when it easily could have been, not to mention editing can end up making some of the existing commentary sound like its not relating to the topic).

@SalSteeles -- We do a lot of things here every day at iReport.com. One of them is surfing the site looking for videos.

Once we find interesting stuff, we talk to the submitter to find out all the details.

We also make sure that all the producers at CNN know about the best stuff on the site and encourage them to use it.

There are some really talented producers here on Team iReport, who take material and turn it into amazing content for CNN.com.

Even were that possible it would have its limitations.  Most of the time MAC addresses are not broadcasted publicly in the stream because its a hardware side feature that puts the system at risk if its publicly known.  Also, even if they were broadcast, you would still run into issues of "spoofing" the mac adresses.

I can understand that as being an issue which is why i worded my comment the way that i did.  A limitation on ireports per day would encourage people to be more thoughtful in that Ireport. As an additional benefit it would prevent some ireporters from flooding out others with massive amonts of reports.

I'm sure theres an arbitrary number you could choose like 4-5 ireports a day or whatever is "reasonable" that wouldn't draw too much negative feedback.

@TheDimmitt -- We're not mad at you, I promise. I thought your sign was great fun.

We've been focusing on some big projects lately, so we haven't been vetting as many iReports as we have in the past.

Sal if it doesn't get approval I think it is bad. I have to change my thinking...And not be such a Ego Dude. Not seeing that CNN Approval doesn't mean the stuff is bad...Then again Maybe? Wow have to stop being so negative!!!!

Also (and i realize i don't have alot of footing on this particular subject, and only realized i wanted to comment on it after i saw numberdude mention it and seeing all the red stars scroll past.)

The superstar system.

Yes i know i'm not a superstar, i don't care, i sure as heck dont throw enough ireports out there to warrant one.  However, the superstar system, is in and of itself, just another form of the ratings system. (as far as i understand it) most people just get said status from posting lot of ireports.  And while i get that participation is key, its not what i'd consider a "fair" system.. or relevant system for that matter.  It makes it seem like some of the ireporters have more clout than others in this forum.

I personally would advocate for the removal of the superstar sytem (yes flame away, though even if i had one i still don't think it should be there).  I believe that in addition to my previous suggestion, it would also reduce "frivolous" ireports since some (not all) of the ireporters wouldn't be throwing them out just t keep their superstar status.

Because we both have anime characters for avatars? or just similar views/mannerisms?

I've read zygotes comments and such, don't always agree with em, but definitely well spoken, however i can assure you i am "not" zygote.

You guys do a much better job then others. Whoohoo! Although I do have to say only one of my video's this past week got a CNN Tag. boo I have to get ready for soccer practice. ciao.

I think iReport is great because anyone can read everyone's side of the story. Or just the opinions you like what ever floats your boat. And the fact that the news actually listens and delivers some of these messages on national tv is even better. They have created a pretty loyal fan base in doing this. I think. Good Job to all of the iReporters, iReport, cnn, GOOD JJOB AMERICA!!! Real news, from real people!

May 15, 2009

numbersdude @Sal...Why should they have to do that...CNN should not limit their selection to a few....you mean to tell me that of the 250,000 or so people on ireport on 20 have an opinion worhty of airing? I dont buy that...and you shouldnt have to be a superstar or a committed Ireporter to get your opinion heard...the opinion itself is what counts...Just my opinion...lol

I was off sick with flu..so missed the meeting..After reading all the comments I find numbersdudes' are very accurate. Have you noticed it IS always the same people being posted on Newsiest and on CNN? Some of the Newsiest is not news at all, just whatever..It would be great to see more variety of people's ireports brought forward to get on to both CNN and Newsiest..thanks..my opinion...

I like ireports because it is an outlet to communicate with other people and read other points of view too. Sometimes there is debate and that is great. It is too bad though that some people misinterperate debate as harassment or something negative so they report you if you say your opinion on their posts. I now avoid those posts altogether which in a way is sad too because then it stifles opinion of people. oh well. I will continue to comment on posts where my comments are not offensive and are welcome and understood as just comments and my own opinion, and not harassment or anything sinister.

I like to incite and encourage discussion on issues and topics that are not a usual "debate", or makes peeps dig a little deeper on their true beliefs and understanding of what the issue pertains to. I can walk away w/ the understanding, that most peeps opinions are different from the "general" concensus. IMO :)

I think iReport was a great invention. It gives amateurs a way to display their talents and interests through the camera or the pen. DaveW, and Lila_Lou and their staff do a great job. It's a shame how some have attempted to ruin the happy people who participate, but it will come to pass. Keep up the good work everyone.

CNN and IReport are to say the least a Global Portal.  I have for the last 4 years volunteering for a local cable company which I call Waynes' World TV.  I have completed news stories in ENG format and anticipate in creating content that will reflect the area I live in and its impact before, during and after the 2010 G8 Summit.  The town has a population of 20,000 full time residents and this is a great place for beautiful scenes and water.  So I hope I will be a help in some way to provide to a bigger Global platform the station that Ted built.

I did the CNN HeadLine News tour in 1996 and sat in on Talk Back Live as a audience participant for the ValueJet crash two days after.  I was positive and enjoyed the time at CNN, I was across the street working a Internet Training show for a Aerospace Company.

Alpha Protection Solutions is recognized as an international leader in the hand hygiene industry.  We offer a full range of products —soaps, gels, dispensers, wipes, etc—to everyone from the ‘mom and pop’ restaurant to the international medical, food or industrial chains.  But, we aren’t just a hygiene company.  At Alpha Protection Solutions we are a compliance company with the goal of teaching hand wash compliance while reducing infectious disease and creating permanent behavioral changes.

The CDC states that “the single most important thing we can do to keep from getting sick and spreading disease is to clean our hands.”

But, what we have found is that the problem isn’t that people aren’t washing their hands…the problem is that people aren’t washing their hands correctly.

We have a solution for this problem in our Alpha Clean System—a patented product that specializes in creating and monitoring good wash habits (bring out prospectus with step-by-step pictures to guide customer throughout the wash cycle).

·     The process starts with the touch free soap dispenser with luminated LCD display.  The system is activated when your hand is placed under it and you’re instructed to initially rinse your hands.

·     At this point the touch free faucet is activated and the water begins to flow.  Once your hands are wet, place them back under the dispenser to receive the proper allotment of soap.

·     Upon receiving the soap, you will be instructed to lather your hands for 20 seconds, which is the CDC recommended time to kill germs.  The sensor on the faucet disables water use during this time period to ensure compliance (also saves water).

·     When the 20 second lather period is over you will be instructed to complete the wash.  The water will be activated and you will be able to rinse the soap off and finish.

·     Upon completion a daily and total count is displayed.  This information is transported to a portable data logger that syncs with your computers for downloadable hand wash reports, graphs and statistics.  A single data logger can track the data from hundreds of different systems.  This allows you to monitor employees washing habits, study patterns/trends and provide legitimate documentation to a variety of inspectors.  More importantly, employees learn the correct way to eliminate pathogens by correctly washing their hands every single time.

All of this is done with an emphasis on the customer.  Since we truly are a compliance company we provide you  with customized solutions and training every step of the way—from our on-site evaluations, interactive website, support line utilizing real people, post installation inspections, local quality surveys, training modules, etc…   We feel that these steps are necessary to truly make a permanent change.

ireports enable relay of the news/stories worldwide via search engines. The mechanism of search engines is inbuilt on the ireports by CNN. It is so convenient to relay to the world what you know. I feel for our jailed journalise Ms. Saberi; I write on ireport; I feel hurt by a judgment of Indian Supreme Court; and I write an ireport. World knows about it within hours. Such an infrastructure that is readily available without any much imnvestment. It is really a great mission by the Cable News Network. This is Ketan Tirodkar from Mumbai; India.
