Our next roundtable will be on Thursday, August 13th.
It was nice to talk to everyone at this week's iReport roundtable discussion. We enjoyed talking with you about what's going on in the iReport.com community.
Thank you for sharing your questions, comments and concerns.
Hi everyone,
Hope you're having a good day.
hello David.
hope you got me emial about dumping some old posts that never got up.
Howdy. What's the topic of discussion this week?
@NERanger -- I did get it. Those are really hard for us to remove, because they fail before they show up in our tool. We have to get a developer to take them out.
The good news is they only show up in your mystuff page so other people won't see them.
Jason’s report on health care rationing was great! Congrats.
Hello fellow iReportarians! How are you all? I'm coming to you from the backseat of my dads car in the middle of nowhere Indiana on our way back home! Ah, the power of the iPhone! Gotta love it!
@JoyfulGypsy -- Hi, today's discussion is pretty much free form. So we're open to suggestions.
One thing I would like to hear is any ideas anyone has on ways we can use our facebook.com/ireport page.
sorry about that. no porblem for me
Heya everyone
Hi everyone. Hi Kyle -- that's dedication!
Hi All
DAvid- not that you can do much about it, but Weekends nonsense still seems to be a bit of a bugaboo with off the wall comments.
@KyleHD -- Glad you could join us. Reading the blog on a tiny screen takes massive dedication.
To second Dave's comment, we'd love to hear any ideas you have on improving our Facebook page. And if you're on Facebook, please be sure to become a fan of iReport.com! http://www.facebook.com/ireport
I have been intrigued by the unexpected opening for national dialogue on race in America in 2009. Irerporters have covered some aspects on all sides and you have encouraged some thoughts. Any chance of a moderated “roundtable” on it with ground rules? I think it is a genuine teachable moment for all of us.
@katie & @davidw I'm always dedicated. Plus this is good entertainment from being stuck in this car!!!!
@NERanger That's a great idea. I think a debate could be great. What do you think would be the best forum for something like that?
@NERanger -- That's an interesting idea. We have gotten some really great stuff. We're looking at what to do with that material now.
@katie- I think a couple of recognized spokespeople to set a tone and look at where we ahve come from and where we can build would be very productive. but it needs to be caefully crafted and moderated to keep it in bounds. but to hear some different pesoectives to react to might be a start.
I'm at work and, unfortunatey, can't stay. I'll have to come back later today to read the comments and catch up. Ciao.
CNN is on my facebook page. I get lots of updates from Hanks.
Heyla!
we are reallly blessed with some great writers, artists, phlisohers- policy makers- who can and do lead new thought. to capture that would be cool and to have them avaialbe for questions. mayvbe some kead time to preapre questions and send them through you guys.
HI Ryn!!
Hey friends. I'm working on two stories: 1) Reactions from members of the AKA sorority- concerning the wax figure scandal- given that the headquarters is here in Chicago; 2) A mice infestation problem caused by the city's unseasonably cool summer.
The mice story will be easier to do and probably uploaded to iReport this evening.
Hey Ryn!
Oh I meant to say this last week but I got a message from someone on facebook the other week who messaged me and said he saw me on CNN and learned of iReport that day. He checked it out and wrote me this nice message. And asked if I could subtitle my videos because he was deaf. I was like wow I never thought of that. I know it's a lot of work but I'm going to try with a video soon. But it got me thinking it would be cool if ireports and even videos on YouTube had a closed-caption option.
@MrIsaacs Both of those stories sound really interesting. We'll keep an eye out for them.
@MrIsaacs -- I can't wait to see those stories. I never would have made connection between cool weather an mice.
KC NER Gypsy Ewillis Kyle
Good to see you
and our most devoted ireport team
Anyone for a beer? I'll take iced tea please.
Kyle- excllent point- might have to do our own transcripts for now- easy for me to say since I don't do video LOL.
@KyleHD -- It would be cool to have a closed captioning function. I'm sure someone will do it as speech to text technology gets better.
One favor, if you do close caption your videos. Please also upload one that doesn't have the fonts because it will be easier for the TV folks to use it.
Hi everyone how are you today?
Hi Ryn
Hello larena!
hey Larena... hope all is well.
@Ryn -- nice to have you here today. Did you see our Woodstock assignment?
David I have been placing post about talking about clothes and recession talking about luggage and reseccion that is interesting for me,
what do you think of my posts re the reseccion with my own photos taken by me
anohter tnought i had was- as the economic crunch continues- athough things may be better, it is still not good- what are parents and students doing (especially those in college0 to cut pcosts? Are people otng out of higher educaiton? Are colleges giving fewer scholarships, etc.
Hi Kcrep and Neranger
I sure did davidw
lol Am I being profiled?
david- Ryn is a teenager- what would she know about Woodstock?
Ryn your so wonderful
Ms Larena
How is it going?
David the Woodstock is great
Ryn me fine and you
@larena -- I haven't had a chance to look at them, it could be interesting if people are dressing differently because of the economy.
neranger your fantastic
I will come up with something for Woodstock, my big bad parents had to chain me under the house to keep me from gong.
I have a coworker that said she sneaked out of the house, got on a bus from NYC and was grounded for 2 months.
@Ryn -- I wouldn't call it profiling, maybe being attentive :) It sounds less creepy.
Bong gong uh
"to keep me from going".
we are all for "less creepy!"
thanks David I think it would be a great idea for an assignment I have placed 2 so far saying what do I need so much luggage and no where to go to,
and re my closet i placed why so many clothes if i just use the same old jeans and butterfly1 placed a great comment of why not giving away clothes for people that don´t have anything to wear?
Well thanks David for being most attentive.
since we are nt full of stuff rightg now- i want to say, that in my opinion, the changes on hte site with getting rid of teh rating system has been a great change. thaks to all of you fior listening and making it happne. Egos are not as bad as before- generally.
@NERanger You should encourage that coworker to send an iReport! And @Ryn I'm really excited to see what you come up with -- recording yourself talking about that time could be great. And, of course, we'd love to see photos from 1969 too :)
I have to get out to pick up some staff in a minute- thanks for these opportunities to connect, ireport gang sorry "team."
NERanger
I think taking clothes no longer needed or no longer fit, to a homeless shelter, or halfway house would be a great idea.
David thanks for not allowint insults no more here is a great change for all of us thanks again David and all the CNN staff too
I'll try to get her to let me write it for her- she is struggling with late results of cancer right now- spirits high but energy low.
@NERanger -- Glad to here it. I do think things are less competitive now, which is nice.
Kcrep yes thats a great idea and placing it too i guess photos or video of your clothes that are going for charity
Cya ranger!!
keep up the excellent work and we will bring new reportes to the site. Promise!!!
Adios.
I love the changes to the site!
Now if there was some way to keep the banned from haunting it would be great.
They are still spreading the "love"
I had to do a double take the other night to make sure I was on ireport.
Most debates are very civil minus a few that can't seem to stay away from ireport once banned and newbies
that have to try the system.
larena, I'd say cut out the middle man and give it to the people so they don't have to pay for it.
@KCRep -- I do think that it would be cool for iReporters to share the simple things that they do to make the world a better place, whether it's donating clothes or rescuing animals or anything like that.
This is very nice. Hello to all the staff. Thank you for all the work you do.
KCREP true thanks great idea
@davidw...Can you put up a "charity" assignment or tag?
David that is great donating anything and doing something to impact and improove our world and nation i say yes thanks david
@Teresa -- Welcome, I'm glad you found us. Feel free to jump in with any questions you have.
Hello All! :)
@KCRep -- I'm not sure when we'll put together a charity assignment, or what question we would ask. Still thinking about the what we would do with the material.
Feel free to post your own story and you can add the charity tag on your own.
Hello Chris!!
@david...ok, that sounds good.
Kcrep yes hope so
have a nice weekend love you all
kisses from jeke and me
@davidw....by the way, your "make the world a better place" didn't get by me lol...part of a Michael Jackson song.
I met Nicole at Comic-con.
What a treat :)
@ChrisMorrow -- I saw some of her photos and blog posts. It sounded like a blast. I can't wait to hear her stories.
Hello everyone
WOW that would be a great assignment,,,,,"How can you make the world a better place"
Any thoughts on future photo club assignments that you care to share?
@KCRep -- Lets explore that. What would we ask people to do or show us?
What sort of questions could we ask that would be interesting to iReport community and the CNN audience?
Maybe more along the lines how does person keep their small part of the world going.
Three Wishes
I'd like to know if you had 3 wishes to make the world a better place, what would they be? :)
@Ryn -- I updated the Photo Club assignment a couple days ago. It's asking for local, unique architecture in your area.
As for future challenges, what would you like to see?
@adriana71 -- Do you mean by participating in community groups, or what they're doing to keep family and friends/neighbors on track?
1) In this economy, where alot of Americans are hurting, what can you do to help?
2) Donating food, clothes or even money, would you be able to do that, would you want to?
3) If you have rental property that is vacant, would you be willing to let a homeless family live in that property until they can find a job and get back on their feet?
4) How far are you willing/able to go to help heal our country?
@Zdan First day of school is coming up for kids in the southeast. How about pix of the first day? Or of going shopping for supplies?
@davidw Both if possible.
@adriana71 -- zdan had to step away, but that could be fun.
This weekend is tax free shopping in Ga. I'm headed out with kids to get supplies and first day clothes.
zdan Hi!
Yes I have been on it. I realy like this one.
You know me, I love anything nature related, pet related.
How about personal photos of pets that look like their people? I know some folks won't post a photo on this one.
adriana That would be a good post to see how many are taking advantage of the tax break and what sort of bargains are out there.
@everyone -- A lot of people have made really good suggestions for stories today. If you have an idea of something you feel passionate about, I would encourage you to just do it, and don't wait for us to make an assignment.
We keep a close eye on the site, so we'll see it.
Thank you @davidw
@everyone -- I've got to take off, but it was good to talk to everyone.
We won't be able to meet next week, so our next roundtable will be on Thursday, August 13th.
Take care
Ciao All :)
What about an assignment about the style or new school clothes and supplies our parents purchased for back to school for us when we were kids? Did your parents allow you to pick out your own clothes? Did you get a new lunch box, backpack? What was the style at the time and what was popular.
Just a thought. Maybe add some vintage photos.
Ok davidw....you should see now.
It’s a disgrace, because millions of Americans are struggling, they are being discriminated against by banks, employment or lack of, health services are being cut, their children’s education being compromised, they’re losing their homes, paying more than they should at the gas pump and nothing is being done about it. Instead we’re focusing on well off people having beers in the white house and showing us how they are not affected by this economy, only millions of unfortunate Americans are. This is called discrimination demonstrated by arrogance.
This is despicable. I can't believe everyone who gets arrested thinks it because of their skin color. At Mr. Gates' arrest, there was a black cop there too. Does that mean the black sergeant who was there was racially profiling Mr. Gates???
woops, hah, wrong blog!
what's an ireport roundtable?
My comment is directed toward CNN and the news media in general in regard to racial profiling. I have mixed feelings! I am a 70 years old black man borned and raised in America. In all my life I have never seen the news media scrutinize a President the way President Obama is being treated. That is to say, in all my recollection, I cannot remember one President that has had to undergo periods, in his adminstration, where he was given a "report card", or graded for his performance. It may just be me, but I get the feeling that there is people in the media who are just waiting in hopes that the President is going to make a big mistake. And because he is black, we (white people) are going to have to watch him (mentally profiling him). Now all of a sudden, there is this fixation on periodic "report cards", and the grading of our President. How long is this going on? And If I am wrong would you please name another President who was subjected to surveilance, to this degree. If the news media want to do the people of this great country a favor, than you should make periodic reports on those elected officials in the "Senate", and the "House" who makes little effort to disguise their prejudices, and bigotry toward the minorities in this country which includes "poor" white people also. Racial profiling is alive and thriving, in the streets of our country and most offices of our government.
It’s a disgrace, because millions of Americans are struggling, they are being discriminated against by banks, employment or lack of, health services are being cut, their children’s education being compromised, they’re losing their homes, paying more than they should at the gas pump and nothing is being done about it. my comment is a lancaster principle, at northrop school name, melnick, called are home and said an incident happened at sch concerning my 7yr, old grand daughter was supposed to have giving oral to a student at sch under the desk, then when i went to pick her up he stuck his finger in my face and said i could not attend meeting when my daughter gave him permission on the to release her child in my picking her up he then yelled at her and told her to sit down, and he stuck his finger in my face, called sheriff after i waved my hands up and told him to please not disrespect me that away, as a parent coming to pick up my granddaughter and i am on the emergency card. my court date is august 21, superior court lancaster. he then had his whole staff to say he never did what he did please help i dont deserve this treatment he did it and im willing to take polygraph test please somebody respond.
