The latest and greatest on CNN iReport, brought to you by Team iReport.
We hope you'll join us today in the blog for our weekly roundtable discussion. We're looking forward to talking to everyone.
Here are some of the cool things that have happened in the last few days:
The health care reform debate sparked some interesting discussions here on iReport.com. More than 120,000 people read about adriana71's efforts to read and understand the legislation and several said they also plan to read the 1,050 page bill. iReporters infoaddict and Margot707 discussed the plan over the phone and shared their thoughts with us. It's been inspiring to see iReporters work so hard to get to the bottom of this important and complicated issue.
We also heard from an iReporter who hitchhiked hundreds of miles for the Woodstock music festival and another who didn't realize that an upstate New York traffic jam would become a part of history. Be sure to read Katie's story on the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, and take a look at amazing photos iReporters shared.
You can also check out Nicole's story about a group of gardeners who grow their own food in the shadows of power lines and planes taking off and landing at the St. Louis International Airport.
And since we weren't able to meet last week, I want to make sure you didn't miss Henry's story about some avid G.I. Joe collectors who were excited about the toy's jump from 12 inch action figure to big screen action hero. Thanks for another great week. We'll open comments at 2:30 p.m. ET.
Hello everyone. Hope you're having a good week.
Hello Hello :)
Sunny in San Diego today!
hey david,
weeks going great. on vacation in florida this week. how's everything and everyone in atlanta?
-jb
Hi everyone! Good to see you all.
@ChrisMorrow, jb -- We're doing great. School just started so traffic's a mess, but otherwise all is well.
Greetings. I'm here, but can only stay a little while.
Good afternoon all. :)
Hi everyone!
@JoyfulGypsy -- Glad you can make it. We've got a new photo club assignment on the way.
Good morning/afternoon
@david - does that dreadful atlanta traffic extend out to athens... totally not looking forward to atl traffic lol
@katie - hi katie.
@davidw - That's great. I'm looking forward to it.
Hi all, i've been missing in action but i'm still around. :) Good to see y'all!
Hello! Happy Thursday!
There's a police standoff in Los Angeles right now, secret service is there, I just heard this on ABC news channel 7
Hey guys!
@Margot707 -- Welcome, your video with infoaddict turned out quite nicely.
Davidw, what is the guitar legend assignment? I know a few...
KCRep I've heard about that too. Somebody made threats against the WH and now they've evacuated a downtown Federal Bldg. The loonies are loose.
@KyleHD -- Welcome Kyle. Why don't you let everyone know about your iReporter meetup in case anybody is in the Chicago area and can come.
I couldn't figure out how to link your event to our iReport page on facebook.
@davidw - Les Paul's death is a big deal in my home. We've gotten a few of phone calls about it. I'll ask around and see if one of our guitar playing friends would like to participate in an iReport.
@Everyone Just to jump in and rock the boat a little... I'm working on an interesting little project. I'm trying to get members of the community to help me figure out what to do with all of the street art iReports we got... what themes do you see, and what ideas do you have? I put a blog post up earlier today right here on iReport.com.
@davidw
interesting assignment. = tribute to les paul
David Thanks. We're going to do a couple more next week.
A military vehicle just showed up.
Chris Will many people know who that is, or just think it's a type of guitar?
@mcintron -- We're asking people to upload videos of themselves playing a guitar lick as a tribute to Les Paul since he was such an influential musician.
Nsaidi, are you still accepting street art? I've been away for a bit and missed that one.
Hey everyone!
KCRep Sounds like you are very close to the action.
@nsaidi
I'd like to see a Urban Street Art Map
We have a lot of street art iReports, btw, more than I expected we would get. Thanks for helping out with this! http://www.ireport.com/ir-topic-stories.jspa?topicId=312449
And the Les Paul assignment is super awesome. I hope all you guitar players out there will find time to contribute an original riff. Glad you all like it.
@KCRep -- Are you you watching this on TV? Or is this happening near you? If it is, please get somewhere safe.
Thanks, davidw, i can't play but have friends who might want to participate. I can shoot the video! ;) I was saddened to hear about Les Paul's passing today.
Margot..it's in Westwood, live breaking new, it's still going on.
@margot::
Les Paul is a legend to musicians :)
Ah ha, I hadn't heard the news about Les Paul.
David....I'm watching it on the news.
@Margot707 - I certainly know who Les Paul was. I met him a couple of times. He was a huge musical influence.
@davidw
What is the Les Paul tribute deadline?
Might be able to get some Rock Stars involved.
@KCRep -- Good. I was worried there for a second.
Yea, if any of you are in the Chicagoland area, we have two citizen journalism meetings. One happening tonight downtown at 2119 W Irving Park Rd in Chicago at 6pm tonight. And then another one in the suburbs on Sunday at Streets of Woodfield Chipotle in Schaumburg at noon!
Chris The younger set may know the name only from the logo on Gibson guitars.
LOL if it was here in Fullerton, I would be out photo shooting it.
@ChrisMorrow -- I like that idea a lot. What would go on that map? What geography could we show?
I saw most of Adriana's interview on CNN this morning.
@KyleHD that's pretty awesome. How's that going? Hope it's all gravy/groovy.
@nsaidi
Good question Nicole. Will have to think about this one.
@nsaidi - Are you looking for more photos of street art? I have more, just didn't know if you were still interested.
Can I ask for a favor? I'm watching CNN right now and Kyra Philips just did this segment '30 second pitch" people promoting themselves for a job! Will you see if I can promote myself for a job?
@JoyfulGypsy What was it like meeting Les Paul?
@nsaidi, thanks, i will check out what you have already so as not to duplicate... NYC has tons of street art.
Gypsy I did too. He did a workshop at a music store I worked for years ago back in NYC.
@nsaidi it's going good. Made some new friends. We are trying to come up with collab videos. :)
@KyleHD -- We'll see what we can do.
@nsaidi My project I told you about is in full swing... Video coming next week
@ChrisMorrow -- We'd love to have the Les Paul submission videos in by Tuesday or Wednesday.
@nsaidi - I was introduced to Les Paul by Pete Seeger, who's a great friend of ours. Long story.
@davidw. Thanks. I'm so ready for a job.
Where's Tyson? Will someone please ask him if he got my email?
ONLINE TOWNHALL MEETING REGARDING HEALTHCARE REFORM

CALL IN 347-327-9992 TO SPEAK OUT!
Yikes, short deadline on the Les Paul. But understand why it's necessary.
Unfortunately, I have to get back to work. I'll see if Pete Seeger is willing to participate in an iReport about Les Paul and I'll take a drive up to Woodstock to interview him.
@JoyfulGypsy -- Tyson's in a meeting, unfortunately. He said he's still waiting for word.
@Everyone... gotta run. This was my first time at the roundtable and I felt a little lost. Weird, as I'm usually a great conversationalist. See ya around. :-)
@mcintron -- The deadline is pretty short, but we have a little bit of flexibility. I think it's going to be really cool though.
Suspect threatened the White House.
davidw - Thank you for the update. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
@LizWhitney -- The format does take a bit of getting used to, but everyone's always welcome to jump in with a question or comment. We'll answer as quickly as we can.
Gotta run. Have a great day, everyone.
@JoyfulGypsy -- Take care.
@davidw - yes, it will be very cool. Just wish there was more time to find my musician friends. Most aren't in NYC right now. But i'll give it my best shot. :)
@mcintron -- Good luck. I was looking at some of your photos a second ago and they were really beautiful.
This was my first meeting too. It's pretty neat. Just gotta remember to refresh the page. Nice to see y'all in 'real time'. :)
@everyone -- I wanted to get back to nicole's question about the street art assignment. Does anyone have any ideas of how we can present these great images?
@davidw - Love the roundtable concept and I'll do better next time at making a contribution... just didn't want to intrude on anyone's conversation. I felt a little strange when I said hello and no one responded, guess cuz I was a first-timer. No biggie... I have some ideas on how to engage newbies if you're interested. Have an awesome day and see you next week. :-)
Thanks, davidw. I love taking pictures and video.
@davidw - how about presenting the street art on a 'grafitti wall'? Not sure how that would work, but kinda like you did the Statue of Liberty thing, with a montage...?
@mcintron -- That could be cool. I can see that in my head.
Hello all
Hi sorry to be late kisses for everyone
Urban art idea
I'd love to now exactly where the art is so I can visit. Maybe a Google Street Map for the art?
@davidw - i can too, and a 'wall' can be shot or drawn, i suppose...
@ChrisMorrow -- I hadn't thought of people wanting to go check out the art in person. That's a cool thought.
Hi EWillies and Larena!
@ChrisMorrow, i really like your idea, too. When you said that, i thought of a city map with 'landmarks' which would be the art. Neat idea.
@Asiegel1202 - Looking forward to seeing that... heh heh.
Urban Art Idea
I like urban art for a reason. A nice charity angle.
@Ryn -- Thanks for helping welcome folks in. I'm slipping on that front today.
more on Urban Art Idea
Many urban muralists have many pieces of art world wide.
Wyland has over 100 whaling walls.
@ChrisMorrow That sounds neat.
@nsaidi- I wish I could say the same...
What are you considering urban art?
Is this graffiti and wall murals? Are sculptures and statues included?
I was also looking into some extreme forms of the art, such as urban knitting along the lines of what micosantos dug up. Any niche graffiti you know of?
@nsaidi
What about Utility Box art?
@Ryn urban art could be anything. We're especially interested in things that are unique and/or attention-grabbing and/or say something about where you live.
@ChrisMorrow We actually have some of that already. It's all good. But I'd really like to see if you guys could tell us the story behind it. The pictures are fun, of course, but what does it really mean to you?
I have seen some fantastic posts from all over.
I think sunethra's wall murals from Sri Lanka are wonderful showing the culture and customs of the country.
Thanks nsaidi
Hi everyone, I should be packing as I'm coming to the States tomorrow. But I couldn't resist! How are you all?
@naidi and @davidw - love that we can get your perspective on just what you're looking for. This meeting is very helpful. I hope i can make more in the future. Thanks!
Time to work.
Have a great day! :)
@everyone -- Thanks for a great meeting. I've got to go, but we'll be back same time next week.
If anyone has any topics they'd like to suggest or have a question, comment or concern they'd like to talk about privately, feel free to shoot me a message.
Take care.
@alisonv Thanks for stopping by! Hope you have a good trip.
Hi alisonv! Where are you and where in the States are you going?
Oops! I'm an hour late! Oh well...needed to pack anyway. See you next week.
Going to Dallas. In Italy now, where I live. Thanks nsaidi!
Bye guys - bye everyone, gotta go. The discussion about the urban art continues here: http://www.ireport.com/blogs/ireport-blog/2009/08/13/if-walls-could-talk
Thanks as always for your contributions.
Hey guys..Sorry I missed it. Late with chores and kids. )
Hi again my art might not be from the assignment street art but is still art and was made by me and the imagination I might got it from the streets of the World I hope to be considered for that thanks kisses
Larena
About healthcare reform, the current bills all have a sliding scale rule (see HR3200, all of page 5 emphasis on lines 9 and 10 "includes sliding scale affordability credits"), meaning some folks will pay more than others for their healthcare. This is Marxism. Are we headed for United Marxist States of America?
Cash for Clunkers? Where's the cash coming from? From you, taxpayer! The government is stealing your money and giving it to someone else.
http://www.federalbudget.com
I have heard enough from Lindsey Graham, Jim De Mint and all the other GOPs.
There is a law that GOP's in S.C. do not want you to know about. It is a law that protects insurance companies completely. Anyone who applies for Long Term Disability from one of these insurance companies in SC will find out.
The law allows the insurance companies to use their own doctors and strike yours out. In other words your treating physicians mean nothing in SC Appeals Court or any court in SC. There is no reliance at all on patients' treating physician. This law does not give one thought about the patient on Social Security Disability, which of course must be proven to the Federal Government. Oh no they execute judgment of denial of disease with judges who know these rules and play this game. This Republican run state already lets insurance companies run over everyone here with this law.
So when I see Lindsey, Jim, and the other mouths trying to undo health reform-I hope that America does not believe them. Oh I have the documentation because my name is on the papers from the judge with all the information. I appealed an insurance company decision.
This law glares in my face while I sit in my wheelchair with debts over my head. No lawyer wants to take the case farther in SC.
So Lindsey what you got to say about health care now. Cause I gotta lot to say about you.
But first I hope that everyone will read the health care bill and thank your lucky stars that the SC GOP didn't write it. And I hope that you see through those big teeth of Lindsey's and Jim's and the GOP and realize they do not care about SC's health and that don't care about your health.
More to come to show you-continued
I missed this again. Maybe next week.
I'm very concerned about healthcare reform. My brother had a doctor appointment at a State Hospital in Louisiana and once he arrived for the appointment he was told that he would not be seen because he didn't have $25.00 to pay for his visit. I was not aware that a hospital funded by the State could refuse to see a patient that have been establised in one of the clinic at the hospital.
My brother is 62 years of age and his only income is Social Security and does not qualify for Medicare and has no other insurance that he can afford. Living on the small check from Social Security with the living expenses and the high cost of medication he can not afford to pay for private insurance.
I hear folks taking about the government take over of health care I feel that we will be better off with government control.
The insurance companies are in control now because under the plan with the insurance companies you have to go to a doctor that's listed as a provider by them. If you see a doctor of your choice that's not what of their providers the insurer will have to pay for out of service provider cost.
