The latest and greatest on CNN iReport, brought to you by Team iReport.
We're looking forward to talking to everyone today in our weekly roundtable discussion. It's been an exciting week here at iReport.com.
Thanks to everyone who helped us brainstorm last week for our "What if?" project. The first installment of the special launched this week, so I'd encourage everyone to check it out.
We'll open comments at 2:30 p.m. ET, so you can share your questions, comments and concerns.
Hi everyone and welcome.
Hi David
Hi
Hi KCRep. Thanks for helping spread the word today.
Hi David w
You're welcome, glad to do it
Good afternoon everybody
hey larena, you have ESP? wow
Hello everyone! Happy day after 9/9/09
@David...are you going to put up an assignment for 9-11? I made a report a few min. ago about "where were you".
KCREP yes I do and believe me is nothing wonderful to live with thanks all I placed in your ireport is a true story is longer but I wanted to keep the minimum
Hi Tyson
Before we get too far along, I want to make sure everyone's heard about a cool new project we want to try.
We're encouraging everyone to spend a few hours on Saturday, October 10th, doing some volunteer work and then share your experience here on iReport.
This is something people have suggested several times in the roundtable discussions, and we're finally going to give it a try.
Katie blogged about it earlier this week, so here's more details. http://www.ireport.com/blogs/ireport-blog/2009/09/08/save-the-date
larena, the only esp I have is knowing what someone is going to say before they say it lol.
Hi everyone! A special hello to larena (such a nice lady)
What's in the news other than Joe Wilson? LOL!
Hey guys, hope this week finds you well.
Hola iReporteros.
David...great idea!!
Hey iReporters, be sure to sign up for our collaborative art project - http://www.ireport.com/blogs/ireport-blog/2009/09/09/a-minute-of-your-time-please
And please pass this along to friends and family you think will want to take part. We need participants from all over the world.
kcrep lol you made me smile now thanks
@KCRep -- I saw you post earlier, we haven't created a separate assignment, but we are encouraging people to share their stories.
nsaidi...you as well.
I may have to cheat a bit on this. I am signed up to volunteer at the Philadelphia MS-Bike event on 10/4. I will report on it on 10/10.
mrisaacs thanks how are you
@davidw - Thanks for announcing! I hope you all get a chance to join our volunteer day.
count on me please
Tyson, can you tell us more about the collaborative art project?
@katie...I guess my "day without driving" doesn't count since I walk to work everyday lol.
@MrIsaacs -- Well there was this big party in Chicago. A lady named Oprah threw it. You might have heard of her.
That was a lame joke, sorry. Thanks for sharing the video.
To all the CNN producers and staff I want to thank you all for a great forum thanks so much I have to go now but keep the great work gracias thanks
@KCRep - I am sure you see interesting things on your way to and from work.
@jeffpickens, yeah, lots of pavement lol
Hey @jeffpickens I wish I could reveal more - but we're still working out the details. I can however tell you that we've already tried a couple "test runs" around the office, and we're getting closer. I hope you'll join in on the fun!
I take the train to work every day. I'm curious if anyone else does the same. I know there's lots of bikers and bussers out there. I also wonder what things you think ordinary folks could do to help achieve energy independence.
walking or biking to work in California is a RARE feat.
*here
Hi everyone!
Speaking of, does anyone have friends in far away places? Europe, Asia, down under? We're really hoping to make this a global project.
Hi @Fred and @alisonv. Welcome!
Hi FredThorne and alisonv
Howdy!
@everyone -- Does anyone have anything they want to talk about? Any issues that they want us to look in to or ideas we should consider?
I take the train and metro and buses sometimes. Depends on where my job is. (I teach ESL at different companies.) Rome doesn't have a great metro system or I would take it more often.
Hi Ryn!!
Thanks Katie. Tyson, I'm in Italy.
Well, share your memories here if you like.

OK, I've got an idea - how about we all share a cool iReport on the site today? Let's say we share ones that don't have the On CNN stamp.
@tyson - I emailed you; I'm in
David, I have a question. I just did a health care reform post with shots from a rally. I interviewed some of the people and asked their permission (at least from most of them) on tape. But I didn't get them to sign anything. If you interview people at something like that, how do we need to get permission - other than telling them how we want to use it? People know they are speaking on camera. I always have questions about that when I'm shooting and don't know if I'm covering myself or not. And do I need to include them agreeing in the actual video?
@Tyson - Share how? Do you mean just post a link to an old iReport here?
Here's mine - a must watch: http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-326748
The videos and photos from the flooding in Istanbul, Turkey have been extraordinary. Sekercioglu said, “There was debris everywhere. The bridge I normally walk across was submerged in the morning and covered by reeds and garbage in the afternoon. Stuff was floating past, including a TV set." http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-326714
A new iReport you saw today, JoyfulGypsy. :)
http://www.ireport.com/people/Indy609
http://www.ireport.com/people/hrtschudi
how about a couple of very smart contributors that help maintain civility and objectiveness on the site.
OK, On CNN, and definitely on the lighter side, I saw some cool kitty-cat condos and they are way cool. The submitter's name is Kitty, too. http://www.ireport.com/people/HappyCat66
Also on the lighter side, I also really liked these pictures of tigers and elephants, respectively: http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-327026 http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-327023
@alisonv -- If the people knew they were being filmed and you told them what you were doing, I think that would be fine. You don't need to include the consent in the actual video.
Darn, I'll have to come read the comments later. Gotta get back to work.
Have a great day, everyone.
I've got one. This one came in last night. http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-326690
Musical iReports can be hit or miss, but this guy's really talented.
Loved the feral kitty condos.
It is actually a feral cat colony where folks have set up the condos for the ferals.
I really liked the idea of biking to work assignment (what if) - I have been racking my brains on that one.
I wouldn't mind seeing an ongoing assignment relating to this idea, but with more of a broad outline.
human power - I was listening to NPR the other day, and folks are taking bicycles and converting pedal power into all kinds of energy saving devices.
...backyard inventors?
I like this one from you, JoyfulGypsy! http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-324702
It's a few days old, but I just saw it today, so I think it counts. :) The goat in the first photo seems so happy and peaceful. It made me smile.
So, we have weekly meetings in Second Life on Tuesdays and during these meetings we will ask people to tell what's going on in their world and what stories they think would be good for iReporters to cover. What about here? What's going on near you and what stories do you foresee being big for iReporters?
Fred, that's a great idea. It is good to meet new iReporters to follow, too.
@FredThorne I heard that story on NPR as well. Very interesting! If you can find examples of human power near you, we'd love to see that.
nsaidi, I think healthcare will continue to be big. Also the economy and how it affects ordinary Americans. What are people doing to spend less? I hope we'll still get news out of Iran.
There are two big gubernatorial races coming this November, one in NJ and one in VA.
I think tomorrow the photo club assignment emotions is up. Any thoughts on the new assignment?
@Ryn -- I'm not sure what the next topic's going to be and Christina's in a meeting. We'll let you know.
nsaidi, love those elephants and lions! Beautiful shots. What about a photo club assignment on faces?
One more, OscarFanRuss thinks that Beatles mania has gone too far. http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-326733
@Ryn -- We'd like to hear suggestions for photo club ideas. Zdan is in a meeting at the moment but she'll be back soon.
@alisonv We just did "emotions" which is kind of similar. So we were wondering if we could branch out a bit and connect the next assignment to something going on? Thoughts? Ideas?
how about "school days"
hola everyone
Nsaidi, true, I hadn't thought of that rather obvious point! What about a theme like the elements. Water or fire, air, earth. Could be interesting. (If we haven't just done something like that!)
@KCRep I like that suggestion. Kids are returning to school, so there's a current angle on that.
@alisonv The elements would be kickarse! Plus, Earth, Wind and Fire is an awesome group. So... We are searching for a news angle, as well. Is there a newsy topic just waiting to be photographed? I don't want to limit you too much, but we are hoping to make these photo club assignments somewhat current.
Hola Asiegel1202 great to see you!
Hi all. Sorry I am late
How about the change of season, summer to fall
Welcome EWillies1961 - by the way, check him out debating GSandeen on CNN.com Live - http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2009/09/09/dcl.ireport.post.obama.speech.cnn
The photoclub rocks, I love it.
my suggestion for an assignment is 'relics'
all around us we see modern tech.
But hiding in plain sight are many things left over from the past.
Sometimes 'new' is not better than 'old'
..and alot of times it is sad to see historic structures (for example) being torn down for a big box store,..
new vs. old?
I think a big story is that with all the arguing and polarization between the two parties on issues like healthcare, war, economy, everyone seems to have an opinion but I don't think most people really know what they're talking about... it would be interesting to go out and interview random people in our cities and ask them questions like "Can you tell me what the public option is and why you are for or against it" I think it would show that everyone has a strong opinion but they don't really what they're talking about
Bye all, gotta get ready for work now.
Thanks for the link hhanks.
@FredThorne: "Relics", great idea!
See ya KCRep
Have a good one
@Aseigel1202 -- Howdy! We're impressed with your work. I think the idea you're suggesting would make for a great "man on the street" piece if someone was up for it. Cough.
@jeffpickens -- That's a great suggestion. I'm betting we will do something along those lines as fall arrives.
@EWillies1961 Holler
@FredThorne -- that's a really neat idea. Is there anything in particular that inspired that idea? Can you give us an example of what you would cover if you did it?
Bye, KCRep
Asiegel, I just did something related to that today. The polarization - even in my own family! - really troubles me. It would be very interesting also to get people to maybe have a civil discussion about something like healthcare. What would that look like?
@Asiegel1202 -- That would be really interesting iReport story. I'd really love to see that.
Is there a way to tell that story in one photo? I'm not sure there is, but it would be an interesting stretch.
Health? Political parties? Politics? Is there photo opportunity in that? Bouncing off davidw there...
nsaidi, I'm having some trouble thinking of something I could photograph related to the news...it comes and goes so fast. Maybe since we are worldwide, we could photograph something related to news in our area (or not) on a particular week. Yeah, Earth Wind and Fire still rocks!
What assignment link would be best to place 9-11 posts under?
Fred, I like the relics idea too. I'm kind of surrounded by them here in Rome!
EWillies, Hi! Will go to see your debate.
@Ryn -- You can just upload them with no subject. We'll find them.
Thanks David!
Oh... I didn't realize we were talking about photo club.... I was thinking more videos.... I will work on that story and submit something next week....
@Asiegel1202 We're kind of talking about both. Stories and photo club at the same time. Hope it's not too confusing.
@nsaidi - I have always been attracted to shooting overhead power lines. My pops moved into a new place recently and his sunset view is framed in OH lines, but they are tearing them down to put them underground. It seems most folks don't like to look at them, but for me old wooden poles with transformers, clamps and cables, always bear nostalgia. Kind of like I was capturing a peice of history and documenting 'the way it used to be'. Also, I am a carpenter and collect old hand tools (I use them on a regular basis as well) and they photograph so well.
@alisonv
Great. Hey just viewed you rally. That was a peaceful rally.
@nsaidi
Political parties maybe in the next few weeks to the passage of this thing.
@FredThorne -- I think that would make a neat photo essay on its own. Would be cool if you could take photos along the way and make a time-lapse, or if it happens during a short period, take a video and speed it up.
@Asiegel1202 -- It will be a great video story. We'll look forward to seeing it
Fred I have 2 boxes full of
the old glass insulators once
used on the poles.
@nsaidi - haha - allready on it, :)
EWillies, thanks for viewing. It was peaceful mainly because one side decided to do a silent protest. I was glad. It wouldn't have been peaceful otherwise, I think.
Ryn, I love those things! Why don't you photograph them?
@Ryn that's cool - i've never seen them up close, but it seems like you could make something artsy out of them.
@EWillies1961 What would capture the political situation right now? If you could do any story, or any photo essay, what would you do?
Gotta run, guys. Thanks for making yourselves available iReport team! See you soon.
@everyone -- I've got to go, but thanks for great discussion.
Take care, and we'll talk to you next week.
should be fun.. i will keep you updated.. gotta goo... nice chatting with all
@Ryn - cool, yeah, my buddies and I frequent some old ghost towns in southernish utah (Price) - I think that may have been the beginning of my attraction for that stuff. Lot's of old glass insulators, ancient power poles, coal mining boom (40s) foundations, and such.
alisonv If the relic suggestion is chosen
I might try it.
Thanks for stopping by, alisonv. Great to have your perspective. I know you've discussed health care over there before. There might be more to cover in that vein...
ciao folks!
Thanks @everyone, see you next time!
bye guys! see you next week.
@FredThorne Seeya! Thanks for coming. I bet ghost towns would be a great travel snapshots topic. I'll pitch it to them...
OK, outta here... bye for now.
rachel8
It seems some of the colors
are very hard to find.
At one time they were a very
popular piece in the
collectible's market.
Fred that is so cool. I love to stumble across
great finds.
@nsaidi
Sorry. Was on a business call. I would show the difference in visual political tactics used in all the political rallies, sessions, and parties and contrast with position on the issue maybe?
wanted to say im proud to be part of Ireport.com. When i spoke at the TEA party today, i made sure to let them know that i was on ireport.com! thanks for the oppurtunity, Nicole and the ireort team! :-) --cam
Just stumbled on to this blog.... very cool.
This post should convince new ireports that their voices are heard! Great job bringing this program to life CNN.
http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-315503
I'll be here on Thursday for sure! Didn't really know about this!
