The latest and greatest on CNN iReport, brought to you by Team iReport.
Please join us today in our weekly iReport roundtable discussion.
We just launched a new installment of our "What if?" series and are looking forward to talking with you about it. This time we're asking people to have a civil conversation with someone who disagrees with their political beliefs. I think this is going to be really interesting, because we really try to encourage constructive dialogue here on iReport.com.
CNN.com just published katie's story on iReporters' experiences interviewing veterans. She did a great job on the story, and iReporters Pixel , EWillies1961 , NMousa and deletrius6 gave us really intimate and personal material to work with. Here's the link so you can check it out .
We'll also be happy to discuss any questions, comments or concerns you may have, and nsaidi has a special surprise planned, so have your webcams ready.
See you at 2:30 p.m. ET.
Hi iReportarians! :)
Hi everyone, hope you're having a great week.
We're going to try a little experiment today so things could get a little strange.
We're testing a video conference function here in a second.
hey kids :)
Hi all
Hello Hello from Sunny San Diego )
I'm excited for this!!!!
video conference... sounds exciting... cant wait
One bit of housekeeping while we're waiting for the group.
After this meeting, our developers are going to reset our servers to fix the problem we've been having with the page views.
For some reason, the page views haven't been showing up today.
We will be down for a little bit, but I don't think it will be too long.
Hello everyone.
@EWillies -- Did you get to see katie's story about the veterans? Y'all did such a great job with the interviews.
@katie i did read it. it's was really cool to see all the stories!
@davidw Haha, jinx.
Dzien dobry!
Hello HI GREETINGS AND WOOF!
@Katie
That was so well written!! I blogged it on two of my sites.
Hey guys, we just uncovered an unexpected issue with the video conference (it's restricting the number of people that can join) and we are working quickly to fix it. If you have an e-mail from me directing you to go to a link, please go there. We'll have enough space for you. We're working quickly to fix this.
@ChrisMorrow-- While we're waiting for nsaidi to iron out some last minute details, do you want to tell everyone about your project?
Speaking of page views...when collaborating with other iReporters only the person that submits the ireport gets page view credits, not both contributors. Is this something that can be changed in the future so that both contributing iReporters get page view credit? sjunat55 and I had over 125,000 views together on our September 11 tributes, but only he got the page views credit.
I like @JoyfulGypsy's suggestion
Thanks David.
iReport Meetup at the San Diego Film Festival
September 27, 2009
Come enjoy the day and iReport on what you see.
(see my short film too!)
Please let me know if you want to attend.
@JoyfulGypsy -- Unfortunately, that's true there's no way to split the page views. We will try to work on a way to do that, but it won't be for a while.
after nsaidi gets the bugs ironed out, what do we need to do in order to request and email from her w\ a link
@JoyfulGypsy -- Hm, that may be a tough one, but it's definitely something we can add to our wish list of site changes. Good suggestion!
Thank you davidw and katie. I hope that happens. It's a bit discouraging, otherwise.
@katie
In Kingwood for me thst is easy for me :)
AlunHill is back - wonderful to be here again - and lovely (blush, blush) comments from Errol on iReport program this morning my time (thank you!) - on my Barbados Rum film!
Alun
@jbjimbo I just sent you an e-mail. This may end up being a little more exclusive than I planned.
@ewillies1961
Great job last week!
Wow, a full house today. Greetings!
@KyleHD I tried to bring you in but you got dropped. Can you go back to the page and try again? Are you having a browser issue?
@JoyfulGypsy We love the collaborations, so don't let missed page views discourage you! Perhaps you could switch off who gets to post a collaborative project each time?
@ChrisMorrow
Thanks. I had fun talking to the folks. I stuck around way after the event was done. Thanks for the lead.
Comment if you'd like to participate
i can try nsaidi.
Welcome@AlunHill and @mcintron. Good to see some familiar faces this week!
@nsaidi it says I need to be in Safari which I am. Maybe I can only have one window open! Trying again!
For videoconferencing you MUST use Internet Explorer on the PC and Safari on the Mac.
@everyone -- Since it might take a bit to get this squared away, let's go ahead and start brainstorming.
If you have extra windows please close them and try to use Safari or IE by itself. Also, if you have client software installed, please use that.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to a webcam at work.
One way I'd like to see people engage each other is by posting iReports about things you don't normally talk about.
In other words, if you normally post stories about politics, but love woodworking -- take us on a tour of your shop. Or you could tell us about the latest book you've read or movie you've seen.
I really think it would be interesting for us to learn more about each other.
@davidw
Grade idea
Any update on the collaborative and street art projects?
Hi everyone. I just posted my very first video yesterday, it's a bit rough but it was fun. It's about Autumn.
I would like to post something about Amateur radio but really did not think people would want to see that.......
@KCRep -- That's awesome. It looks good. What did you shoot it with?
@JoyfulGypsy -- The collaborative art project is coming soon. Tyson is leading that effort but he is in a meeting. We've done a couple of test runs at work, and I think it's going to be fun.
Regarding the Photo Club...May I ask how the selections are made and what criteria used in making the selections? Also, are the pictures reviews by a panel of people over there or just one person? How about including the people's user name, along with their real name in the collage, so others will know how to find the rest of their work?
@KCrep - would you share the link, please?
@TheDimmitt - I used to be very interested in amateur radio - I think it could make for interesting film - go on, try it!
Alun
Hey everyone, we've got a few more spots open if you want to join the conference. Just let me know. We just can't have a whole bunch of people rush in at once.
@david....I shot it with my Canon Power Shot SD1100 IS, that I didn't even know took video lol. All my single shots have come from that camera.
@TheDimmitt Amateur radio sounds cool! I'd love to see something about it.
davidw - Thanks for the update on the collaborative project. Sounds fun. Let us know more so we can prepare. :o)
Thanks Alun!
@JoyfulGypsy I think the street art project will come out in October -- Nicole's working on it, but she's busy right now trying to work out videoconferencing. We'll keep you updated!
I can't join today, y'all don't want to see me in my pj's. Next week. I was gone a bit, my computer crashed.
@TheDimmitt -- I think you're wrong. The fact that you are interested in amateur radio proves that people are interested in it. Amateur radio's been around a long time and a lot of people are passionate about it, so I think that would be great.
@AlunHill....Here's the link.
http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-329664
I'm still waiting for an answer from Tyson. My fingers are beginning to cramp from holding them crossed for so long. ;o)
rachel I better not do the video in code! It has been my hobby for over 50 years! Sort the Internet prior to the internet!
@JoyfulGypsy - As for Photo Club, we all vet the submissions, so they do get quite a few looks from us. We strive to get as much variety from the most users as possible when we produce a gallery. Also, we try to acknowledge folks who really captured the essence of the assignment. Only the person's name is mentioned because we don't have the capability of adding links to the gallery.
Thanks Katie. :o)
I have a comment about the ireport uploader. It says you can upload up to 200 mb, but of course, that's not the case. Then you get an email telling you it's 100 mb.
Also, a suggestion. About notification when stuff airs. Can't something be done to let ireporters know? I think it's only fair after such hard work on everyone's part.
@JoyfulGypsy -- The good news is, this project won't take much in the way of preparation.
David!! I have a Ego that tells me I am always right but most everyone else is wrong....... HUmble can not even spell that word.
@KCRep
Message left on iReport:
Ahh, that's really lovely - honestly!
The best videos can be just people describing what they see - no rehearsal, just from the heart.
Appreciated!
Alun
+++++++
Also - I sometimes wish we didn't have seasons here in London - it's 8pm here cold and dark .. yucky!
Alun
@mcintron -- Letting people know when their iReports are aired is a really big priority for us. I want us to get to a place where we can do that every time, but it's hard to coordinate that with all the units that use iReports.
@mcintron -- Good call on the upload limit. We'll make sure those numbers are correct.
As for alerting people when they're on air, we've been brainstorming ways to make this happen for a long time. It's tough since it's impossible to know when everything is on air, but when we see something great, we try to repost it here on the blog. Any other ideas for how to let people know? (Keep in mind that the iReport Team works down at CNN.com, not directly with the TV folks.)
@AlumHill....Thank you, that really means alot to me!
Who can help me fix a typo on an ireport that has been vetted? It's a small one, but i typed the person's title as 'Director of MarinA Educucation and it should read MarinE.
@mcintron You can fix that yourself! Just go back to your iReport and edit it.
@JoyfulGypsy Hey there -- The street art project is going to come out in probably the next couple months. There's some technical work that has to take place first.
@mcintron -- You can edit it as long as it belongs to you. (there's a blue 'edit' button) We'll review the edit you made, then put the "On CNN" stamp back on.
All: Go to this link, but DO NOT join the call or take any action of any kind on that page unless I tell you it's OK. That will overload the queue.
http://www2.oovoo.com/conference/ireport
@mcintron
I do typo's all the time on here - giggl
You can go back and amend it - there's a box at the bottom which asks why - "fixed typo's" is an option - much used!
Alun
@mcintron -- You can fix the typo yourself. the on CNN bug will go away briefly, but we'll put it back on as soon as we look at it.
The computer emails us when that happens.
log on to http://www.realworldnewworld.com and http://www.scohen305.blogspot.com for plenty of comments.
Well, maybe once something airs... y'all can create a list that is updated here on ireports? At least that way we'd know it did air? That would be nice for now, until a way can be found to notify.
My niece caught one of my video ireports by accident one morning. Had she not seen it i would never have known it aired.
@nsaidi - Cool. Thank you.
Thank you for your answer, Christina. I realize you do not have the capability of adding links. That is why I think it would be helpful to include the person's user name along with their real name. That way people could look up the user name if they wanted to view the photographer's profile and other work. Otherwise, no one would know to find the rest of my work under the user name "JoyfulGypsy"
katie Thanks with my spelling it is good to know that we can edit something after it has cnn on it. I fear changing something. Yet i fear many things.
@mcintron We'll keep brainstorming ways to notify people that won't require too much from us ... it would be a full-time job to keep track of every iReport that makes it to air and we're pretty busy already!
I know how to fix typos, but it says if an ireport has the 'on cnn' tags, it will lose them if you try to change anything.
Here's the link to kcrep's video http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-329664
@mcintron, yes, but we'll put the tag right back on! We get an alert when someone's edited an "on cnn" iReport.
@mcintron -- We'll put the cnn tag back on.
Ooops. Saw your answers after i sent my response. Ignore please. lol
Katie Just have Wolfe say Hold on Stop everything TheDimmitt has just uploaded a iReport!! Tell Obama to hold the news conference. Then a picture of me smoking my pipe could be put on the screen....Then you would not have to call me!
katie - that's great to know. I might make a small change in my "Latina in America (and other labels) ireport. Thank you and davidw, too.
@TheDimmitt Haha, I would love to see that.
@Katie, i think some of the responsibility should be on the tv people - why can't they keep a running list of ireports that air and then fax them to you guys?
I know, probably easier said than done.
Here's a link to the conference again.
http://www2.oovoo.com/conference/ireport
You can't log in to join the chat right now, but you can watch.
Right now the rest of team iReport is huddled in front of nicole's computer. And Chris Morrow's dogs seem really interested in the show.
http://www2.oovoo.com/conference/ireport
That's really cool!!
@everyone -- I want to thank everyone for your patience with the Web conference. The only way for us to test it in this format is to test it live, so it's kind of chaotic
@KCRep -- are you able to see what's going on? on the webchat?
Hey, saw you guys, very nice! Wish i had known, i'd have combed my hair and put on clothes. I'm a night owl so this is morning for me... lol
@mcintron Actually, I think that's a good idea (keeping the responsibility on the TV people) ... we'll try to lean on them a little more ;)
@davidw....Yest, I saw 5 different people on the chat.
Nah, it looks fun!
Alun
I'm watching the video conference in a separate window. I think it's more distracting than anything. The pictures are too small. Imagine if everyone was on and talking at the same time. It's cute, but not very helpful.
@Katie, while everyone organizes, let me take a moment to wish you a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Saw the post on twitter. ;)
@KCRep -- Cool, so it's working. We want to make it work a little smoother, but good.
davidw....the sound was really good too.
I think everyone has moved away from here and on to the video conference....
I'll be getting back to work now. Thank you, everybody. See you next week. Have a great day.
@mcintron Thanks, but it's actually Lila's birthday (on Saturday)! I realized that may have been a little confusing :)
@JoyfulGypsy -- There is a way for us to turn people's mics on and off so it won't be a babel. I don't know if that's working yet.
We will have to work out a new format if we go forward with the video chat.
Very cool guys! Video conferencing is the way to do this! Thanks for letting me in for a bit!
@Katie - oh, okay. I was rushing so maybe i misread it. Happy birthday to Lila! :)
@vectorlyme -- Thanks for joining us. Hope to see you again soon.
@everyone -- We're going to need to wrap up for today, so that our developers can do the maintenance they need to do.
We'll be down for a few minutes.
I think they're going to keep testing the video chat if you want to keep watching at
http://www2.oovoo.com/conference/ireport
@everyone Thanks for joining us today, especially with the confusion of the video conferencing. Hopefully we'll all be able to try it out soon!
I hope you all get a chance to chat with someone with opposite political views. I'm looking forward to your iReports!
bye guys! good luck with the video chat. nicole wouldn't let me in. tear (just kidding; there was only enough room for five people - so i walked over to her desk and crashed the video chat)
@Everyone, it's been fun. See y'all next week.
Thanks for the good convo, everyone! See you around the site.
im proud to be a part of ireport. i know discussion is probably open, but thanks for the support on my ireports!
