The latest and greatest on CNN iReport, brought to you by Team iReport.
Please join us for our weekly iReport roundtable today at 2:30 p.m. ET. We're looking forward to talking to everyone. We've had an exciting week with a lot of interesting stories from around the world – and from our soggy backyards.
I want to let everyone know about a couple of community events before we get started:
nealmoore is inviting iReporters in the St. Louis, Missouri, area to cover the "Habitat for Humanity St. Louis 2009 Build" on Saturday. They've got 500 volunteers, who will be building brand new homes for low-income families. If you're interested, you can check out Neal's iReport for more information! for more details. It sounds like a good opportunity to meet other iReporters in the area.
ChrisMorrow is organizing an iReport meet-up in San Diego on Sunday and is inviting iReporters to cover the San Diego Film Festival. Her film "Wyland: Earth Day" will be premiering at the event and we're looking forward to hearing all about it. You can contact her for more information.
Please let us know if you're planning an iReport meet-up in your community or have an event you think iReporters would be interested in, so we can help spread the word. You can email me at david.williams@turner.com or send it to contact@ireport.com.
We'll be opening comments at 2:30 p.m. ET and look forward to talking to you.
Hi everyone. Hope you're having a good week.
Happy Thursday!
Hello Hello from Sunny San Diego.
Ahoy hoy
Hey Chris and Kyle. Good to hear from you. Are you getting excited about film premiere Chris?
Howdy Davidw - So excited about the San Diego Film Festival. Wish you all could make it. Not flooded over here :P
I would like to get out to San Diego sometime. Though I can't complain about weather today. Looks beautiful out our window.
Would love to see your movie sometime hope it makes its way east.
I wish you luck @ChrisMorrow! That's exciting!
Hi all!
Thank you! Looking forward to meeting all the iReporters.
@KyleHD -- How are things going in Chicago?
this is getting off to a VERY slow start!
it is starting slow. Oh well, it's nice talking to y'all. Is there anything on your minds. toopics you'd like to talk about?
@davidw pretty good. There are some events next week I'm really excited about. Next Friday there is a huge viewing party downtown to watch the announcement to see if Chicago will host the 2016 games. Then next Saturday it's Newsapalooza which I think will be a lot of fun!
any word on when we'll know more about the art project?
Hey guys
Hi all
Oh I would love to cover the San Diego film festival, but unfortunately I'm in NY :) but I think there are some relay hot spots I can cover from here :)
Welcome guys,
I'm not sure on launch for the art project. Tyson's out today, but hopefully we'll have news soon.
You will be there in spirit Guricha :)
@KyleHD - What's Newsapalooza?! I'll be in town that weekend.
@zdan YOU SHOULD SO COME! it's a gathering/social/networking event/concert for newsy people. I'll send you the invite I had on facebook.
When is the San Diego film festival?
I just googled it.
Since things are moving a little bit slowly today, I want to show y'all something cool that I came across last week.
http://www.shawnrocco.com/?page_id=23
Shawn Rocco is a photojournalist, who is experimenting with taking photos with a regular cell phone camera. He calls it the Kodak Brownie of the digital age.
It's really inspiring to me to see what someone can do with the most basic tools.
@thomasFort The San Diego Film Festival, Sunday, noon - 4pm
Hello to everyone
Chris thanks for your pm I tried to answer but your pms were full
@larena - my box gets full often. Clear now if you would like to resend.
David W hi I have send you some pm and no answer why? thanks David
Thanks, Kyle!
Hello everyone
Chris thanks I won´t be able to attend I would love too thanks so much for the invite
@larena -- I'm sorry larena, I have not had a chance to respond to all of my email today.
Alun Hill here - apologies for joining late - thanks to HH for reminder!
Welcome Alun
David! So what is this thing?
DavidW thanks so much,
No problem @AlunHill
I am so amazed with all the posts CNN ireports have great talent thank you all
Impresssed with cell phone pix - amazing how those things have developed (unintentional pun!) in recent months.
I took a train to Liverpool the other day and took some pix out of the train window, which I Twittered - I should have sent them to iReport!
Alun
Hi all. I haven't been around much lately.
@TVPigs -- basically, we hold this forum every week to give people a chance to ask any questions they have or talk about other concerns. We also do a lot of brainstorming.
So if anybody has any questions -- fire away.
HH Thanks for the heads-up about this roundtable---Roman
Sure thing @romanmica
DavidW I have a question re pms I receive all kind os strange pms is there a way to have the system checking what happens on pms that would help me and if someone else has the same issues might work
some pm have viruses I received one from a brazilian journalist and allmost ruined my pc again thanks
@everyone -- I have an idea, let's play a little game.
How about everyone share what the big news story in your area is.
It's not the funnest game, but should be interesting
It's great to see "meet - ups" - I'm more than happy to arrange something on London or elsewhere in the UK - I will do an iReport next week to invite people if that's OK.
I was thinking of going somewhere famous in London, but with special access for us, which I can arrange. I'll see what people think.
Not sure where, yet, but something iconic and "very London".
Alun
@Larena -- First, I would advise not clicking on any links in messages from people you don't trust.
I can look into the issue though
@ChrisMorrow. Thanks, I'm in Phoenix so I might make the trip over.
Clarksdale school was flooded here in Cobb County and the school is looking for donation of school supplies to help replinsh their losses.
Greetings everyone! My first roundtable! So exciting!
The biggest thing going on here in Chicago is waiting for the Olyimpic announcement. Yesterday Oprah announced she was going to go to Denmark, where they are going to announce it and try to push for Chicago and Michael Jordan is not going to go, and now people are mad at him for it. The mayor is still trying to figure out the costs of the games to host it here!
@AlunHill -- That would be awesome. I think it would be our first international iReport meet-up.
Let us know when you get details and we can put info on our facebook page and things like that.
Welcome @omekongo!
DavidW thanks I do believe there is a second Ireports blog behind pm curtains I have to go now,
have a great weekend everyone thanks
@adriana71 -- That was awful. I feel so bad for those poor kids.
Hello All! Unfortunately I'm in little ole Kirksville MO and not close to anything. Happy Meetings!
;-)
Somewhere around the London Eye? @AlunHill
Biggest news here was only 30 minutes away - and I missed it - got flu today!
1,500 items of gold and silver were found in a field 30 minutes from my (northern UK) home - they're around 1,300 years old and biggest such find ever - it would have made a great iReport (sob, sob!).
Value? Priceless, apparently. Grrr!
Alun
Hey all, I'm gonna go see what Chris M. is up to in sunny San D!
San Diego - The San Diego Film Festival is going on Downtown. 5 days and nights and 85 film premieres (including my short - Wyland Earth Day).
Always a good time at a film festival.
...and a little excited about interviewing William Shatner. What would you ask him?
How about combinig a whole bunch of iReporters asking for the finance commitee to release the latest verison of the bill?
Saw Shatner at DragonCon, definitely a character @ChrisMorrow
@hghanks - ooh, LondonEye people are good friends of mine - would be a great idea!
Alun
Biggest story in Denver today is Najibullah Zazi.
Thanks hhanks for the reminder! Just walked in the door with my kids so great timing!
@madmurph -- that's awesome.
Hi all!
The news here (in Italy) has been that Italians are very concerned about the soldiers in Afghanistan after the death of 6. Berlusconi is making his usual attempt to be non-commital. Speaking of Berlusconi...some fans of his did a video that is the smarmiest thing you've ever seen stating that he should get a Nobel Peace Prize because he's been involved in the post-earthquake disaster in l'Aquilla. (It's the least he could do!)
@madmurph -- excited to meet ya!
Biggest story here is summer is over but it was 103 yesterday.
I'm doing a performance to raise awareness about the Congo Crisis in Oklahoma. NBA player Etan Thomas will also be performing. Any of you all in that area Saturday night?
http://www.dialoguestartone.org/pwer_of_one_campaign.html
@alisonv
I will look for your reports - journalism in Italy is, err, interesting, with Berlusconi owning so much of the media ...
Alun
Good for you Omekongo.
@omekongo -- that sounds exciting.
How about let us know when and where.
Thanks Alison! I'd love to catch up with you in Italy! I'm speaking in Holland in March next year. Maybe I'll make a trip! Any ireporters in Holland?
I need to go to another meeting. Thank you CNN iReport!
Did anyone hear that the earth's average temperature has decreased in the past 10 years???? I don't know if that is verified, but that story is out there.
@ChrisMorrow -- Have a great weekend
@davidw, it's 7 PM this Saturday night:
Driving Directions to Power of One Event
Dan & Joy Davis's Home
1776 W. Waterloo Rd., Edmond
Located between Kelly & Santa Fe on Waterloo Rd.
I-35 to Waterloo Rd. Exit, turn west
website is dialoguestartone.org/pwer_of_one_campaign.html
Ugh listening to President Hugo Chavez... all about the revolution in South America. Gracias pero no gracias. He loves the movie South of the Border by Oliver Stone. Has anyone seen the flick?
@omekongo- cool. Looks like a busy weekend for iReport community. That's awesome
Knoxville news is the Christian/Newsome torture slayings
The trials are going on now.
This has gotten very little national exposure and makes some of Nancy Grace stories sound like a fairy tale.
ambrosia, I haven't heard that! That is surprising because I thought it was going up! @chrismorrow, have a great weekend!
Omekongo, you'd be welcome in Rome.
Alun, I haven't actually done any reports on Berlusconi because I don't know how well-known he is in the U.S. - other than for his escapades with women. But if you want to see the ridiculous video it is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lfd2sF_VsNc
The funny thing is that they monitor comments so there are few negative ones. But the rating is very low.
Hey iReport team, I've decided to do a collaborative report with two other iReporters. What are the options from a technical point of view? Any hints?
thanksdavidw! I really can't wait to meet some of you guys in these other cities. performing in new york on the 2nd and boston on the 3rd. anyone there?
alisonv, you can use skype. also, if you're on a pc, you can get the program "pamela" and record it then post it. There is aprogram for macs too but i don't know the name of it...
@alisonv - I would suggest that each of you submit your version of the project. It would be interesting to see how three people use the same material differently.
yes, I believe evidence shows that the earths temperature on average has increased over the last 100 years, but I hear evidence also shows a slight decrease in that past 10 years...I have not researched it, but was curious if anyone else has. I think it would be newsworthy, so if none of you know, then maybe I'll look into it and do a story. ;-)
@Alisonv
Remember, CNNi (international) uses lots of iReports so any personalised pieces could be well recieved - and also get shown on their iReport for CNN which is broadcast about 8 times now, Thursday to Monday.
News/ views from Italy could be very well appreciated - especially from an American's perspective!
Even talk about healthcare differences!
Alun
any ideas on where to look for credible data?
David, that's an interesting idea!
Omekongo, I'll look into it. I have a mac, but I don't know about the others. Anyway, I'm sure we all have skype.
@ambrosia78 -- that would be great. Good luck. I think climate change was one of the hardest things for me to wrap my head around when I was doing science and tech stories.
@ambrosia78 i was channel surfing the other morning and one of our local weathermen was saying that temperatures have been getting warmer however there is a pattern like this every hundred years or so. if they have a video of it, i'll send you a message with it! it was really interesting!
running in like Ron Burgundy "I'm sorry I'm late. We can do the news now"
I'm working on a couple iReports: one about the American Heart Association having a walk in downtown Chicago, and then a shoe drive by the Omega Psi Phi fraternity in the same location (Soldier Field) the next day.
I also plan to participate in the October 10 project by renting a car and driving around the Midwest to look at various volunteer projects.
Alun, I actually thought about doing that. I was a financial manager for a hospital transplant program for 15 years. Now I'm covered by Italy's national health program. (Socialized medicine): Could be interesting.
@ambrosia78
Try the Wolfram Alpha search engine - very useful for this sort of thing.
I was training some journalists on it last week - and it's great for research, especially for reporters!
Alun
@MrIsaacs -- That sounds like a cool adventure. I'm going to be helping with something at my daughter's school if my flight lands in time.
Does the ireport have any plans on doing any thing about music, namely negative music? There's so much talk about negative rap music, for example, but little coverage on the guys who are out there putting out positive (at the least, curse-free) music across genres but they'll never get attention. I respect Jay-z as a businessman and has grown as an artist, but I always wonder why Oprah condemns negative rap but ONLY has rappers on the show who have put out negative rap.
thanks for the input...this is something I need to at least find out for myself. I don't like rumors and I also don't like data presented in a misleading way.
@omekongo
Are you able to get pamela to record both sides of conversation? I had to use SkypeCap
I never heard of skypecap but with pamela, it'll record the split screen you set up. it can also just record audio...
@Alisonv
(Yes, I read your resume on your iReport page, hence my suggestion - giggle!)
Do it!
Alun
omekongo, that is an interesting topic. I think music affects people more than they know. I'm a big fan of positive music and I actually just finished recording my first album, which acknowledges struggles but always points to hope. I've heard from other people that listening to positive music has made a difference in their lives.
@omekongo -- That sounds like a great story. Don't think we'd planned to do it, but would love to see it.
Since you're touring a lot, it might be cool to do sort of a road diary to show the glamorous life of a musician.
Alun, you clever thing! I had no idea you were so well-informed! thanks for the encouragement, I just might do that. Italy is number 2 in healthcare according to the World Health Organization.
hey everyone!!
hi Cameron!
@cam4573 Hi cam, nice to have you.
@omekongo
I guess I will try it again! Maybe the trial version had the issues. I will go ahead and purchase.
ambrosia78, what kind of music do you do? I'm thinking iReporter collaboration! What a first! I do poetry & hip-hop in English, French, and swahili. Put out 6 CDs to date! CONGRATULATIONS BIG TIME ON YOUR FIRST CD! WEBSITE PLEASE!!!
Omekongo, I've been thinking about doing something on the history of hate speech in the world. Would be interesting to talk about this some more.
@cam4573
Great reports young man. You sound like a natural.
Hey Cameron! My favorite teenage ireporter! You're doing great work!
Cameron and Kyle, really like your reports. It is fun to have a viewpoint from the next generation (if that doesn't sound too Star-Trek-like.
@everyone -- I have to go take care of some stuff. Y'all take care and feel free to keep on chatting amongst yourselves.
sounds like a plan alison! Let's do it!
@alisonv haha thank you! it was fun!
@Alison
Back in Italy. Running from us Texans? :) :)
Ciao guys. I have a new book I'm going read. whoohoo
wow thats cool. It has just been a hobby of mine and for the first time I decided to make a full album this year. I'm not sure out to define it...maybe acoustic and pop-rock, but most of it is pretty medium paced or laid back. It is getting edited this week, but some of the songs are at. myspace.com/michaelambrosia
Hi Kyle! haven't checked you out yet but I will now! I agree with Alison about younger perspectives!
Keep it up Kyle.
EWillies, well after 2 weeks of healthcare rallies, I did feel like running back!
Omekongo, an idea just came to me about that. Maybe another collaboration...
Man, am I the only one on here that lost her star??? :-(
Have I been a bad, bad girl?
Take care davidw! I don't know about the term "glamorous", but I'll definitely get some footage of some shows! Have a great weekend!
the first song on there is a slow one and not super uplifting but the others are a little more peppy er
@omekongo thank you. I was actually watching some of your videos earlier this week! I think I commented, but nice stuff! :)
Listening to you now Ambrosia! Good stuff!
Alison, let's do it! Gotta get your star back (smile)!
Hi everyone, Alison I will look for your current postings and add to to your viewership to help you regain your star.
Thanks @everyone for coming!
@kylehd. thanks!
Ok, Omekongo, let's write and talk about it. I'm working on another collaboration now, but I've really been thinking about it. If you search Bill Moyers and "hate speech" you can download an podcast of an interview with an author who wrote a book on it. VERY interesting.
@alison, you're always OUR star!!!
@alison, will do!
Thank you, Jay. I wonder if it is a technical thing. I've been more active than ever lately. I'll live, but I do miss my little star!
bye Hanks. Thanks iReport team!!
I'd better turn in. It's nearly 10 p.m. here and I've got to get up at 5:30. Yuck. Night all!
I'm off as well! Afterschool program for the kids! Take care everyone!
me too, take care!
thank u omekongo! im proud to be part of ireport! its fun! any ideas for me?
So sorry I got the email late. Please don't fire me ;)
Still very interested in being a part of the group. Thanks so much for inviting me.
DOH!!!! My days are so messed up this week!!! Sorry I missed!
definitely need a heads up on future roundtables.
I have been trying to upload some water fall pics from last morning, but was unable to do so, as they are not going through, have been trying several times now, wrote to contact us too, but they have not told me what I should do. Please be kind enough to look into this.
Thanks,
sunethra, shari
Hi everyone, Yes Chris Marrow - see you in SD on Sunday. I work up to 60 hours a week in a very high volume industry, so I am rarely able to participate in these events during business days...my time is all on weekends, vacations, and nights...
The Big Story here is the heat at 110F and the fires...one fire came within 1 mile of my work...Pixel did an excellent job covering the fire in Fillmore, North of LA...Click here...http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-332902
Thanks, Al
