The latest and greatest on CNN iReport, brought to you by Team iReport.
When it comes to Black Friday, you're either part of the club, or you're terrified to join in. iReporters showed us the campouts and the competitions between families that create an intense atmosphere at stores the day after Thanksgiving.
iReporter Marjaani followed a group of shoppers who spent days in tents outside a Best Buy so they could get the best deals on electronics. The shoppers said they had a system set up so they could rotate who was at the campsite. And, they camped right through Thanksgiving. The families in front said they have been competing for the lead spot for the past couple of years, but they know each other and have almost become friends through the competition.
BLAKEINHOU found some families in Houston, Texas, who had been there since the day before Thanksgiving. They were playing dominoes and enjoying life in tents. One couple mused that if they both bought a laptop on sale, they could save about $2600 and the long wait would pay for itself.
The intensity of these so-called "doorbusters" is a turnoff for many, who dread the chaotic aisles and strong competition to bring home the best loot. A few violent incidents have broken out in previous years when shoppers took their enthusiasm a little too far. mamajane told us she dislikes shoppers' behavior on Black Friday and thinks it brings out the worst in humanity. "I have never, ever gone out on this day. People today are too rude and something about this day brings out the worst, in people and their manners." Several iReporters digitally nodded in agreement by posting comments on her post.
But the backlash against Black Friday isn't stopping some people from waiting in relatively harsh conditions for the "experience" of having done it. Asathecomic found people waiting for hours in freezing Minnesota weather just for the experience of being there. One of the people in line claimed he was just there to get batteries, and made no effort to get out of line when Asathecomic offered to bring some for him.
Stores seem to encourage the long waits, or at least enable them. WCNreporter tracked down shoppers who waited all day outside a Best Buy in Virginia Beach, Virginia, so they could get a ticket at 3 a.m. that would let them get into the store at 5 a.m.
KyleHD said he tried Black Friday a while ago and found it overwhelming. Some of his friends wanted to try it for the first time, so he thought he should offer some tips. He showed us how to comb through newspapers for deals and emphasized that you must be prepared to compete against aggressive, experienced shoppers fighting for limited-quantity goods. He also suggested going online to start hunting.
Marjaani agrees, saying she thinks trolling for Internet deals beats joining the throngs at the store. She planned to stick close to home and look online for deals.
What do you think? Is Black Friday out of hand? Let us know if you love it or hate it, and send us photos and video of the frenzy in your town.
The propaganda that is taken place during these holiday seasons is an ambomination to every americian...that includes the children that this government have left no place else to go for education to the military to fight thier wars for control of the world order......I stood in lines in 3 diffrent cities in WA. In all the stores I seen near to empty carts.....very little in normally costly items....no TVs very view if any DVDS or Gamestations..no normally espensive clothing just underwares and if some pants not wranglers or levis but off brands. When I stood in lines last year and the year before an the years before that poeple had games.TVs,enterntainment systems, furniture, costly Items given a good price.....Where and who is telling you people that things are better....every line I stood in the person in front of me and behind me complained about the economy and our government. Where do you people come from you not reporting facts your reporting porpoganda for the government.....Cause they need us to think our country is strong when we owen by the Chinese and our Taxes are outragous and our healthcare is unavalialible unless we want to destroy our childrens futures. Our law inforcement and legal system is rapping our families through munipulated laws for revenues.........WHAT THE HELL OS GOING ON Dame you for not seeing the forest throught the trees.
Wow, not worth the hassle. Just join Direct Buy and everyday is Black Friday!!!
Tarraw,
Idon't know what state you are from but I was in line for a very long time for this black friday event and people were spending a LOT of money. Every cart was nearly full of massive big screen TVs. I even told the person next to me that the recession must be over because it was insane how much money people were spending. This was my first black friday I participated in and I lost hope of all humanity... very rude people and agressive.
Black Friday or White Friday it would'be the same if it were in Korea.. This materialism chnages people into greedy monsters to express it rather excessively in my country. Should we any further comprimise our humanity
for the allures of monetary comfort, or exellence i'd
say? What about better rules on that day instead?
I wonder how people would act if the stores didn't accept credit cards.I wonder how much better of a Christmas it would be to not be thinking the whole day on all the bills that money could have went to.
Well I have been doing this for 5 years now and this was the best year. Since walmart let the store stay open 24 hours if u wanted to shop u could shop. If u wanted the electronics or any of the doorbusters u would have to wait in different areas of the store until 5:00am. Receive your ticket for your t.v or laptop pay and go around back to get it. It was that simple nobody was pushing, fussing or cussing at each other but maybe that was becasue I was in fairfax, Va.
What a boost to our economy this brings, not to mention the many great feelings on Christmas morning. Nice story from everyone who contributed.
thanks
it's 1:46 in Basel (CET) and I am watching CNN... World Report is on and the piece is about modern slavery. it's sad. we are worrying about spending/shopping but the truth is there's a lot of us that do not even get the change to dream about it.. take for example thai farmers sent to the US with fake contracts (as the piece shows) or people from sri lanka or china in Qatar or Dubai with fake promises of wealth and good standard of living.. all lies! they get their passport held for 2 to 3years without even get the chance to visit or host their siblings.. not to mention the wages.. is you ncan call it that way! let's stop and thing for a moment, shall we?
The best part of my report was the campers playing poker in front of Target - with a full size Poker Table!
