The latest and greatest on CNN iReport, brought to you by Team iReport.
Please join us at 3 p.m. ET for our weekly roundtable discussion.
It's a great opportunity to talk with Team iReport about what's going on in the news and here at CNN iReport.
Before we get started, I want to let everyone know about a really cool resource for iReporters, or anyone who wants to be a better journalist. The Knight Digital Media Center at UC Berkeley has put together tutorials on video techniques, photography, and multimedia storytelling that are really useful. I encourage you to check them out.
We'll open comments at 3 p.m. ET.
Talk to you then.
Hope you had a great week.
Thanks David, for the most part.
Thanks for doing this.
Hi DaElmer, good to have you here.
Thanks for coming by delwilliams.
If y'all have any questions or comments, feel free to jump in.
Thanks, I'm normally an hour late every week. But being laid off means more time online.
Sorry to hear you got laid off, but it's good to talk to you.
Yeah, never expected the Domino's Pizza to go out of business either..lol
Good afternoon, David. Thanks for the tips from the Kight Digital Media Center.
Hi all! Nice to see some new faces. Do you guys have any iReports in the works?
Hello everyone! How is everyone doing?
Howdy, all. :o)
After all the video I shot of the local Ski Jumps in town last week, I'm tapped out right now..lol I wish I could have taken the 10 some videos I put here and made one nice one :) Still learning..
@jeffpickens -- Those guides are really good. I wish I'd had them when I was in journalism school.
Using my google phone for the meeting.
I think it working :)
I was all ready to do a "travel nightmare" story trying to get home to NJ from FL after Saturday's snowstorm. But all went well Sunday, so I just posted some vacation photos instead.
Hi JoyfulGypsy, hope you got to work okay.
Check out this great video on my friends, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and how their music inspired Nelson Mandela. http://www.time.com/time/video/player/0,32068,66114419001_0,00.html
Hello folks! Glad to see everyone.
@Davidw - Yep, I made it. My husband's flight was on time, too.
Somewhere, I have pictures I took of Nelson Mandela with Mambazo. If I can remember which laptop or external drive they are saved onto, I'll post a few.
So whats new in the wonderful world of iReports?
Hello delwilliams. I've had u on my twitter for a looong time :)
@joyfulgypsy That would be cool. And I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that has drive issue.
late, but i'm here! hi guys. :)
@adriana71 - :o)
@JoyfulGypsy Very cool video. We'd love to see those photos if you ever find them!
Hey @adriana71 - lots going on in the world of iReports. Nicole is busy working with the Iran Desk today, combing over images from Iran.
We've been doing our best to keep up with all the amazing images of snow from the entire eastern seaboard.
Menawhile, we're busy planning some new assignments.
Starting next month - we're going to bring back the Weekend Assignment.
We're still brainstorming ideas for that btw- so let us know if you have any to share.
Good story joyful :)
@katie - I'll look for the pictures of Mandela tonight and post a few tomorrow.
Thanks for watching the video. :o)
Hope some I-Reporters out there can get snow on film on the Miss Gulf Coast.. What a sight that would be..
I have an idea. Two of my favorite assignments from last year were the My City, My Secrets & Main St. USA. What if we kind of combinded them? Like we find a small local business, and try to feature the small businesses across the US. It could be a cool map in the end!
@tyson - Yay! to weekend assignments.
Woot everybody workin' for the weekend.
@DaElmer -- I don't know if we've gotten any from Mississipi yet. I saw some people building a snowman in Dallas on TV earlier.
We did get some snow photos from the French Riviera today, but I don't think we've talked to the submitters.
Biloxi, Miss is getting snow tomorrow I think. Heck the whole state of Miss is expecting 2-6".. weird..
I think I've seen enough snow photos (and enough snow) for now. Looking forward to the Weekend Assignment. Tyson, can you give us a clue?
Hmm, snow in Mississpi, if DC was totally stymied I can't imagine there.
@KyleHD I like that Idea, I've been trying to get my city featured for a while..lol
@jeffpickens true enough, but we still have most of Feb an March to get through. But lets see what new bone can we all pick at.
For those of you new to the Weekend Assignment - each Friday, we'll announce a new assignment. You'll have the entire weekend to complete it. (Don't worry - we'll try to keep it simple and fun) Then we'll take the best submissions and put them back on the site in a creative way.
I'd love to run some Weekend Assignment ideas past you. Coming up in the next post...
Woops! Phone battery dead, Talk to ya'll later.
Looking forward to the weekend assignment.
Have a great day all - stay warm!
I think everyone's eyes will be on the Olympics this weekend :(
@DaElmer I think it would be neat to see all the small businesses across the US. They are all so different and unique! You can tell a lot about the area from just one store!
@DaElmer: Here's an idea - See what parts of MS get the most attention with snow removal. I'll bet anything it will be the roads that lead to the casinos that get salted and plowed first. Here in NJ the Atlantic City Expressway is always the cleanest road in the state when we get a snow storm.
Yeah, I live in Upper Michigan next to the USA's largest Ski Jump.. But I lived in Memphis and and 1" of snow kills them..
OK, some weekend assignment ideas - let us know what you think, K?
*Capture your city or town's skyline.
*View from the top (take a photo from a high place)
*DIY - weekend warrior (build/create/fix something over the weekend)
*Old versus new (find an old photo of a place, revisit that place and take an updated version)
@DeElmer We're launching the weekend assignments the first weekend of March, so we've got a little time. No worries about the Olympics stealing your glory!
The first 2 Idea's I have posted on here already, BUT I'll climb the Ski Jump again..lol Such an awesome view after passing out 1/2 way to the top..
My city skyline.. Marietta The Big Chicken, heh. They all sound neat small time projects. Perfect for a weekend,
@tyson, those seem like easy and fun assignments!
@Katie, thanks.. Reading my mind, it wouldn't be the first time something huge happened right after loading an I-Report..lol
@everyone Any other easy and fun suggestions?
Ideally some of the assignments will be quick and easy, but we also want to try some things that will be a little bit more of a challenge so we can all stretch a little creatively.
Sorry I'm late folks, having connection problems. Hi all, it's been a while!
@tyson - Cool. I love those weekend assignments. :o)
My fun is trying to do something all "in one shot" because I don't know how to edit video.. It's always 100 takes..lol
@davidw - Sounds good.
It's hard to beat the NYC skyline form Weehawken side :)
@tyson: I like "DIY". But in my case it would be "how not to". Too bad I didn't video my recent battle with the toilet augur.
I like to learn where the name of cities came from.. Always an interesting subject. Mine is "Iron Mountain"- exactly what it sounds like...
@Adriana71 - Try Hoboken
@adriana71: Agreed. One of my favorite places to take pics.
OK, so let's keep those weekend assignment ideas coming.
Here's a few more to chew on.
*Share and prepare your signature dish. (yes, this is a cooking assignment - think Rachel Ray but in like 3 minutes instead of 30)
*Micro/Macro - for you photography buffs, zoom in on a person, place or thing and see if we can guess what it is.
*Town founder. Tell the story of your town founder. Take us to important historical locations in your town.
I uploaded some new snow photos and video; are you still vetting those or should I stop? I love snow and can't get enough of it.
@DaElmer -- I really recommend this article on shooting video http://multimedia.journalism.berkeley.edu/tutorials/shooting_tips/ It has a lot of things you can do to improve your videos.
I really think it will be a big help.
They've also got some tutorials on editing.
@tyson - nice.
@David, thanks. I'll check that out. Improve my videos? What are you trying to say? lol Just kidding..
I was just thinking of a cooking assignment! :-D
@joyfulgypsy My parents had an apt facing the Hudson, right by where Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton had their duel. That and my aunt still lives there, free stays
There are so many attractions around my town it is impossible to get them all in one shot. Between the Largest Ski Jump in the USA to the 2nd largest Bat Cave in the USA... Did I mention we have the Largest Cornish Pump in the world as well..
Hello where did everyone go? No one's talking?
@mcintron I'm thinking.... :0)
What's a Cornish Pump?
Some of our pals at CNNI are cooking up a time-lapse video project. Anyone up for trying a time-lapse video?
@adriana71 - I know exactly where that is. :oD Cool.
@mcintron we're here! just pondering weekend assignment ideas. :)
@lila I'm always up for a time-lapse challange....i've never done one before but think it would be fun!
@lila - I've never done a time lapse video, but I've always wanted to learn.
@jeffpickens It is a Giant Pump that was used for a underground mine. Pumped water up from 1000's of feet.
@Jeff- The Cornish Pump is the largest steam-driven pumping engine built in the USA.
@everyone Cool! I've never done a time-lapse video, either, but I'm totally game to learn.
With all the snow lately, maybe a good weekend assignment would be to tell what is within easy walking distance in your neighborhood that is fun to do on the weekend?
@mcintron -- That's a really good idea. We love show us your neighborhood stories.
@mcintron That's a great idea -- it'd be fun to see how walkable people's neighborhoods are (or aren't).
Thanks everyone, your feedback is super helpful. OK, a cuple more weekend assignments to ponder...
*Thrifty challenge (take a $10 bill and see how much cool stuff you can get with it, document your treasures right down to the last penny)
*Find the only payphone in town - is anyone still using it?
We also love walking. We try to have team meetings in the park when the weather cooperates.
@david did you see my snow video and photo question? Are we pretty much done with that?
Awesome! A video producer is working on a how-to video for making time-lapses. I've never tried it either, so I guess we'll just all figure it out together. :)
Are you guys not doing "This Week in iReport" anymore?
I love to find out more info on why it is legal to have a camera in a public bathroom in Upper Michigan.....
@KyleHD - we're taking a break from TWiI while we explore some new video projects. Here's a little tease... we're working on a video treatment to showcase members of our community. We're actually editing one now for a prominent member of iReport. (From Vancouver)
We have a payphone a few blocks away so that's not a big challenge for me. NYC still has 'em.
Gotta run. I'll come back and check comments later. Thanks. Until next time....
@DaElmer: Do you mean a surveillance camera, or a personal camera?
@mcintron -- We're not done with the snow yet, we've gotten a ton so we haven't been able to vet all of them.
@tyson i saw pictures of that on Facebook! haha, i thought something was up and I tried search for a video but I hadn't found one!
Might actually snow here in Atlanta tomorrow. That's always interesting.
(crosses fingers for snow) Too bad I don't drive around with a sled in my trunk anymore!
@david, okay thanks! I was hoping mine showed a new angle (kids sledding in the park during the storm) but I guess it's old news by now. :p I had trouble uploading last night.
@everyone I've got to head out, but I'm really excited about the weekend assignments! Thanks for all the great ideas!
@KyleHD Nice! Yeah we'll be sure to share when it's ready. The idea was born from the visits that many of you have taken to CNN Center. (Yours was a blast)
Have to head out. Talk soon!
I gotta run to meeting (on Weekend Assignments actually) so thanks for all the feedback. See you soon.
I got to pick up children at school. Have a great Day everyone. I'll check back here when I get home. Anyone have suggestions on how these camera's are legal- please tell me..
Have a great week. Take care.
bye everyone! have a lovely week!
@tyson Have Nicole tell you about the day she had all of my four kids with her. ALthough truth be told Henry had to do most of the work. lol
Ciao one and all.
@tyson it was a fun day!
Looks like everyone is leaving, so i'll talk to you all later! Have a great weekend!
Ooohhh sounds like some great ideas are in the works!
I love it!
Hello everyone I am a rookie here and need some help. I have a investigative type of story line that I would like explored. Just wanted to know how to start the ball rolling and thought you all might know. OK Here it is, Why is it that Gang activity in the US is not considered terroristic and why not use those laws to crack down them and the drug problem sweeping the nation. I would really get behind a plan that would do this even if it ment paying more local taxes. What do you all think.
Oldarmydog....the meeting ended before you wrote your comment. It's a good question, come back next thursday at 12pm est...
I'm a longtime viewer of HLN and really like the show. But, I dislike being interrupted every 25 minutes to listen to Comcast. I'm in the Wash DC area. CNN probably can't do anything about it because Comcast is the cable provider but at least I have a forum to say I'd rather listen to Robin than to the boring lady on Comcast. Thanks for listening...
Is anyone else tired of hearing the politicians talk about how we have to tighten our belts, yet they've snuck a 10% pay hike into the health care bill? I heard it on this news channel a couple of weeks ago. One journalist made a comment to that effect & I'd like to know if it's true. It's because of their greed & constant spending that's caused this recession. When are the politicians going to give up more than empty promises & hot air. I'm sick of their selfish ways & back-room deals.
Hetal and Anuja here from ShowMeTheCurry.com
Had a quick question...we are working on the assignment, our video is a little more than 3 minutes, ok?
In response to Poppy Harlow's story this morning on the formula used to determine poverty thresholds. That formula was created in 1955 and has never been revised even though the original formula was developed using the cost of living for 1955. Actually, it has been 54 years with no revisions until October of 2009 when they submitted new formula to congress for approval to use. I know this because I have the Associated Press article written by Hope Yen, and this was one of English paper topics.
