The latest and greatest on CNN iReport, brought to you by Team iReport.
Please join us here in the blog for our weekly roundtable discussion. We'll be talking about our next weekend assignment - time-lapse video.
We think this is going to be a fun and challenging project and we're looking forward to giving it a try.
iReporter RyFly shared a great example that shows the demolition of a building in the Cabrini Green housing projects. That video was shot over three months, but aspencer80 was able to create a time-lapse video of the building of an igloo over a weekend.
We'll also be happy to talk about any other questions, comments or concerns you may have.
We'll open comments at 3 p.m. ET.
Hi everyone and welcome. Hope you're having a good week.
Sorry about last week. We got caught up in breaking news.
Howdy everyone!
Weekend assignment y'all! Let's get hyped
Good afternoon everyone
Good afternoon!
DaElmer: I see you got a star. Congratulations!
Hi guys. Thanks for taking part in the last weekend assignment, Jeff! Are you game for this week's challenge?
The weekend is what is scaring me quite a bit..
Hey ya! How's everyone doing this week!?
Not sure I have the technology or the know-how, but I'll give it a shot
Can I put my two-cents in about the claiming process?
I've never done a time lapse video before, but we talked to some people who have, and they had some tips. Here are a few:
1 - Leave the camera on a tripod and do not move the tripod or operate the zoom while recording.
2 - Record for a minimum of 30 minutes.
3 - Choose a panoramic style shot.
4 - Set the iris/exposure to automatic.
5 - Do not touch, shake or bump the camera until finished.
@jeff, thanks.. I've been working hard to earn it back. I don't want to let it go now..
i'm excited for this weekend's challange!
hi guys!
Hey guys, how's it goin'? I spent part of today looking at some sites with tips on good time-lapse production.
Hey Jeff, we actually do have the ability to claim mobile submissions now. If you look at your iReport profile page, you'll see a tab that says "Mobile upload." It has a custom pin and instructions for sending in e-mails.
We didn't explain that last week because we figured it might get a little confusing, but we'll definitely introduce the feature on the blog soon! In the meantime, please feel free to give it a try.
whoa! nicole! you changed your profile picture! it's no longer a cartoon. :)
Hey there - nice to see everyone. Can't wait to try time-lapse this weekend. Anyone got ideas about what they'll focus on?
I'm worried about the Solar/hyder Flare that could be headed towards earth. While I think this could be Minor, no one seems to have answers about it.
However on that same note.. The Northern Lights are supposed to be one of the best displays in 100 years this weekend because of it..
Yes, rachel8. However, I fear I look no less gender-confused. (Apparently the beard and mustache confused a few folks.) And if anyone is wondering, I am working from home today, so I am not in the same room as the team.
"Thinking" of Chris Morrow right now who told me last night she would not be able to attend today:(
Katie: I had a great deal of difficulty on Saturday with claiming my stuff. I had two photos disappear after I sent the "claim" email. I left the third as unclaimed and someone saw me complaining on Facebook and claimed the thierd one for me.
Hi all!
@DaElmer -- Chris has been keeping very busy at the Olympics. She's sent in some really good stuff. Looks like a lot of fun.
Howdy, y'all.
So one thing that I think is interesting is how to choose a time-lapse subject. I looked at one site, for example, that recommends that you try just taking ALL the photos from a shoot and use them to make a time-lapse (because there's always slight variations).
http://www.photoguides.net/the-story-telling-power-of-time-lapse
And I also found a site that has 12 creative examples in which time-lapse has been used:
http://www.10000words.net/2008/06/12-creative-uses-of-time-lapse.html
And there's an example of time-lapse being used to show changes on a Web page:
http://www.labnol.org/software/tutorials/how-to-create-time-lapse-video-from-pictures/2089/
Subject choice is important. What kinds of subjects would you like to time-lapse?
hello everyone
@jeffpickens Hm, I'm not sure why the photos would disappear after you sent the e-mail. I'll look into that. The claiming process took a little longer than usual since it was the weekend, but I think everything was claimed pretty quickly on Monday.
I hope the PIN numbers help! If you have any other thoughts, please share.
Hey..don't you guys accept uploaded mp4? I did it before when the new site debuted, but today it didn't work..lot of glitches today? or is it just me?
@Katie @David Any news on the request I sent to Katie?? Is there any news at all? Something is better than nothing.
@jeffpickens -- I'm sorry you had trouble. I think there was some confusion with our weekend moderators, which led to some submissions being pulled in error.
I'm looking forward to trying out time lapse photography. Never done it before. However, my plans may be ruined since we're getting clobbered by a huge winter storm. Expecting 18 inches of snow!
@JoyfulGypsy make a time lapse of the snow falling! that would be cool
@JoyfulGypsy Snowfall always makes for a good timelapse! You can document how much falls over the weekend. Or, build an igloo like this iReporter: http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-406039
Hi Kerry1yall. Nice to have you here.
@davidw: Could be the volume, since the assignment involved mobile-uploading. I just don't understand why it cannot be automated, since CNN has our email addresses and cell phone numbers in the database.
@JoyfulGypsy Yes snow sounds terrific, especially if you are stuck at home. If you can build an igloo, go for it. And then you can move into it.
The great thing about snow, by the way, is you can track its progress over time because it goes up! It collects! There is a change over time.
ty firefox just booted me tho
@jeffpickens -- That's something we're working on.
I did a time progression of snow falling on my garden gnome back in December - from beginning until he was completely covered and that hardly got any views. A month later someone posted a single picture of a gnome in snow and that got vetted.
Those are great ideas everyone. However, if the weather is better by Saturday, I plan to photograph all the action in Times Square from the top of the red steps.
Thanks, David. I'm done complaining now LOL
Got a timelapse suggestion from a CNN designer who keeps getting booted from logging on:
You can do it with a video camera and alter the frame rate in post production. If your camera shoots at 29.97 fps and you want to timelapse at 10x, you just change the frame rate to around 300 fps.
Hmm yes. Garden gnomes. Check. This assignment would be good for that. Havest thou a linketh?
@jeffpickens -- No worries, that's what we're here for.
Where HHanks today, he is normally here..
@JoyfulGypsy Garden gnomes or Times Square, either one sounds great!
Yo, guys! Checking in from Maputo, Mozambique - 80 degrees Fahrenheit and 74% humidity right now...I feel like I'm going to melt!
I have some experience with this kind of video technique, and I'm going to try my best to put something together...
@DaElmer -- Henry's getting some work done on his computer. He says hi.
Hello @all
@maddogza LUCKY! we're freezing our butts off in the newsroom today :P
@maddogza -- Hey, good to hear from you. Do you have any tips for the rest of us?
@maddogza what up za? Sounds warm warm warm. I don't suppose there are garden gnomes in Mozambique?
How about CNN doing a story about the Northern Light's Show that is going to happen on Feb 27th & 28th? Then explain why.. seems more relaxed to me than seeing nothing and thinking everything.
@nsaidi - I haveth the linketh here: http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-372040
No snow in Mozambique either I guess?
lol @HHanks, just wanted to thank you for giving my video attn. I think this would be a great debate to look at the pro.s and con.s.....
i'm thinking about going to lunch and eating outside and just putting my camera under my chair and capture all the feet that pass by! maybe...
@JoyfulGypsy WOW! I was on vacation when you put that up. I'll bet we were thinly staffed at the time due to the holidays. That's really cool.
If PRO is the opposite of CON....
Then what is the opposite of ProGRESS????
@KyleHD That's a very cool idea! Most sites recommend recording for at least 30 minutes, so make it a nice, leisurely lunch :)
last year, @craezer posted this timelapse of Seattle from Kerry Park, aka my favorite park and view of Seattle!
http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-249760
my question,,,
mp4 uploadable??
@katie always...haha...i went to brunch on sunday and I was there for 5 hours! haha i can have a leisurely lunch for sure!
@maddogza - Sounds great, I'm taking my wife and children to Jamaica in 3 weeks. Will be a nice change from snow:)
@KyleHD that sounds great! I think one of the tricks is how to position the camera, keep it still and such. I think you're onto something with that idea. I might do something similar, a time-lapse of my walk to the park showing some of the action on Peachtree Street. Maybe.
Anyone have any equipment or methodology suggestions? What past experience do you have with time-lapse?
@nsaidi - Thank you. It seems my timing is usually off.
@MelissaF -- It should work. I haven't heard anything different. Your video is on the site now, so I don't know what this issue is
MelissaF mp4 is an accepted format.
Just a quick hi to everyone. I haven't been around much lately, but haven't forgotten you all. I'm glued to the health care summit, though.
Hi alisonv, great to see you here. This project sounds like it might be a good one for you to try.
@nsaidi...I thought so too because I did it when the new site went up...but this morning when I uploaded "Just Rip the Bandaid Off" it failed so I reformatted it to quicktime and it uploaded...is there a lot of glitches going on or is it just me?? getting lots of errors lately...
@rachel8 and @nsaidi - yeah I've been seeing "SNOW DAY" on my friend's Facebook statuses and laughing. It's actually too hot here. Did you guys ever use my photos from last time?
http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-379182
Tips to everyone for time-lapse:
- Make sure you have enough battery power and space left on your camera to record for a while. You could get a perfect shot and then run out of power or memory...
- Be smart! Set up a tripod in a place where you can leave it safely and it won't be knocked by anything.
- You don't need a camera with a professional time-lapse function - e.g. something that takes pictures at given intervals and then compresses it into a movie. You just need a normal video camera and then some video editing software which can speed up hours of footage fast enough to squeeze it into just a minute or two. Make sure you mute the sound when you render the final product.
- BE PATIENT.
I will try getting a Time-Lapse picture of the HUGE Northern Light Show this weekend...
@maddogza excellent point on the battery life.
I've seen some sites showing how to do time-lapse on your iPhone (and I downloaded an app to do it) but one caveat is you need to have power to last you.
What projects have you done in the past, and how did you go about them?
@DeElmer - That sounds fantastic. I'll be looking forward to seeing it. :o)
The CNN I-Report box that appears on our videos- does that mean it was on the air OR does it mean it is something you suggest to viewers?
Neat idea @DaElmer! And good call on the tripod @ maddogza
oooooo, maybe i can time lapse my tap dancing class! it would make us all look like ann miller! heh.
Hey everyone.
Just to chime in, the igloo video I made above was made with a regular old Canon powershot SD 1000 camera. In video mode there is a time lapse option where it can capture 1 frame every second, or 1 frame every two seconds. I wonder how many people have this ability in their point and shoot camera but don't know about it.
@zdan @JoyfulGypsy I hope I won't be filming the END of this WORLD as we know it.. Hope the northern lights is the only outcome of the sun explosion..
@DaElmer -- That means that it has been approved for use on CNN or any CNN platform -- HLN, CNN.com etc. It means that someone from CNN's editorial staff has contacted the submitter and verified the information in the iReport and that the person took the photo or video.
It doesn't always mean that it was used on CNN though. We do send everything that's approved to CNN producers, so they can see them.
@rachel8 - LOL :oD
@aspencer80 That is a great tip! Lots of cameras have autofire built in. How did you come up with the idea to do the time-lapse of the igloo, and have you done these before? We hope you'll participate in this assignment.
@David, thanks.. this afternoon the comments went crazy which led me to believe it was on the air somewhere..
@aspencer80 What's the time-lapse function called? I've got both a Canon point-and-shoot and an SLR. Maybe other people can find the function if we know where it's at?
@nsaidi The idea to record it on video came to me just as I was about to walk outside and start building it (which is why in the first segment of video the battery died - I hadn't prepared for it at all.)
I've done a few other time lapse. After the igloo video, I set up the tripod on the passenger seat of my car and drove around the town to capture the road conditions and the general chaos on the roads that the snow caused.
On my Nikon Coolpix, there is a "continuous shooting" mode as well as an "interval timer shooting" mode in addition to the standard "single" shot. It's usually somewhere where the shot delay timer is, in my experience.
The snow storm is really bad over here so I'm leaving work a little early. But first, I have to go dig my car out of the parking lot. It's buried. See you next week. The time lapse assignment should be fun. Hasta luego.
Alright then, folks. I need to get off the computer and go somewhere that has AC. I just dropped by because Henry told me I should...
Hope you guys survive the cold! I leave you with a time-lapse vid of mine which I made several years ago - my parents told me to shovel the driveway, so I turned two hours of work for me into a couple minutes of entertainment for you. It was as simple as setting up the camera on a tripod inside, leaving it to film, transferring the video to the computer, speeding it up, adding music, saving, and uploading!
http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-166456
@zdan I don't have the camera with me right now. Built on mine I think I get to it by first getting into Video mode, then hitting the Function button and scrolling down through the options that pop up on the screen. Im pretty sure its just called "time lapse"
@JoyfulGypsy -- Drive safe. Good luck getting car out.
I'm not sure if my camera has that functionality so I may have to pass on this weekend assignment. I'll have to check my camera and instruction manual when I get home.
Heres my snow drive video:
http://www.vimeo.com/9304568
Heres a random boy scout camping video with time lapse segments included:
http://www.vimeo.com/4621564
oh i came in on time lolol hello everyone
Is CNN planning on doing a story about what happened on the sun? Or will they wait until after this weekend?
@jeffpickens -- You can try doing it manually too. just point the camera where you want it and push the button every few seconds for a while. It might be a little jerkier, but it will work.
q: is there a set or maximum time limit for ireports? i'm working on one that may go over five minutes but not by much
@DaElmer - I'm not sure if our tech guys are doing a story or not, but I'll mention it to them.
@jeffpickens can you speed up a video? Or just take a bunch of stills and stitch them together? Sometimes that looks cool too.
@Kerry1all -- There is no limit other than the file size. As long as the file is less than 200 MB.
@everyone I look forward to seeing your submissions. This should be a great learning experience for all of us first-timers. I'm heading out for the day; talk to you again soon!
ty david
Nicole: I'll have to look into that. Still trying to learn my way through Adobe Premier
@David @Katie @HHanks The sites I have seen and the warnings from NASA tell me this weekend will have some amazing sights to see in the sky!!! Northern lights like they haven't been seen in 100 years. Would be nice for the people to see it before and get to experience it first hand.
Thanks everybody for stopping in. We'll look forward to seeing your timelapses.
Have a great weekend.
@aaronspencer80 Those videos are gorgeous. I think I let out a little sigh...
But yeah, gotta get going like the others. This one sounds like a fun one. Good luck y'all.
Parting words: You can stitch it together with iMovie on a Mac or Windows Movie Maker on a PC. There is a special program called iStopMotion that a lot of folks like on the Mac, which may be preferable to iMovie. Or if you have Adobe Premiere or Final Cut or something else, you're set.
Hunt around and there's probably a free app out there to help you.
@maddogza that vid is hilarious...
I heard something this morning on a radio community talk show. WWKI 100.5 Kokomo, IN. One of the DJ's asked if anyone had heard about the situation involving criminal activity involving Seniors attacking Freshmen on the Freshman bus after a basketball game. I looked on my Iphone and found some stories. This situation happened apparently January 22, 2010 and she mentioned Criminal Deviate Conduct and Criminal Confinement. After looking at some articles (googled) I was more horrified that this has been attempted to be covered up mentioning the Seniors who have rich lawyer parents. Please see the following link to find many articles. It is alledgely racial as well. The story mentioned forced anal rape and many other horrifying situations. The video on the bus has turned up "missing". Please check this story out and don't let the rich people in Carmel Indiana along with the school officials and police continue to cover it up. The story says that there were four coaches on the bus and there is also a link a television press conference given yesterday February 24, 2010 which some quoted as not giving anymore information then already known. One teacher talked about the state of the student body since this incident but insisted on remaining anonymos. It was at an athletic event. I know this is not reported very well but PLEASE check out the link and investigate so they can no longer cover up this criminal situation. Carmel is known as a "rich" community north of Indianapolis, IN. Here is the google link with all the stories about the horrible situation.I was in the car when I heard the situation brought up and talked to my parents about it and cannot get it out of my mind. I am absolutely sickened by it. Here is a link listing many stories regarding this travesty.
http://www.fox59.com/news/wxin-carmel-bullying-folo-022210,0,2327125.story
There is news about this story on MSNBC also. Thank God. National Attention will keep them from covering it up.
I've done alot of computer based Timelapse video.
I'm kind of a Timelapse Junkie!
It's easy to do and the software to do it is free.
First off you need some software to grab an image at specified intervals. The program I use is HSSVSS
you can get it from this link.
http://www.hssvss.com/
It does time interval based time lapses or motion deteced time lapses.
You set your camera up and set the software to capture and image at what ever time interval you like and it takes snapshots and saves them to a directory.
When you're done you have a folder full of images. you then need to combine the images into an avi or some video format.
For that you use a program called VirtualDub.
You can get VirtualDub from this link.
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/virtualdub/VirtualDub-1.9.8.zip?download
VirtualDub Does alot of really cool things with video...
It'll combine a directory full of sequencually named images into a video file.
Here's an example using the two programs I mentioned to create a timelape of a timelapse video of me doing a drawing demonstration.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rp4e2sKrWWM
Here's another Goofy timelapse I made of some slime mold
I found growing on some leaf litter after a few days
of rain. (Hey! Like I said I'm a time lapse junkie! =)
http://www.youtube.com/user/Kpalivec#p/u/14/UFcuKb8tDg0
It has tons of free video filters to process video files. My favorite is the DeShaker filter.
Here's an example of it in action using the security cam video of the Haiti earthquake. I used virtualDub to clean up the contrast. enhance the color saturation and stabalize the video... Again.. All these programs are free!!

There is ample money in the health care system to pay for everyone in the country. Every other country in the world that has health insurance can do it for about 11 - 14% of their GNP. The US cannot insure everyone for about 15% greater than this when it now costs the country about 16 to 18% of GNP for its health care. If the U.S was the original country providing universal care to its citizens then I can see the difficulty in engineering this provision. But it is somewhere along the figure of twenty to thirtieth country to attempt this and it appears it might be even one of the first developed countries in the world to fail in this attempt. How shameful! And if we were the greatest country on earth, as many continuously remind us, then we wouldn't be in the financial mess we are presently in. What does greatness mean when the most unfortunate in our country cannot plan for their family's health? However if the problem is only that of money now, when it apparently has gotten over the idealistic hurdle of providing health care to the unfortunate, perhaps something along the following thinking may be in order to provide the money for universal health care. If the ultra-wealthy want more than what the majority of us get for our health care there is nothing to prevent them from purchasing it; who knows they may even gain victory over death.
About 16% of the American people do not have health insurance. Let the government take 16% of the money that goes into the health delivery system and set up their own system. They say that the total health delivery budget is about 2.5 trillion dollars. 16% of that money is 400 billion. 400 billion dollars annually going into the health care system to treat those who have no health insurance could go a long way in setting up clinics and hospitals throughout the country.
However, so that the U. S can really get the Best Health Care that can be forthcoming from a democratic system Invite personnel to staff these health facilities; and to really see government work instead of those employees just being ordinary civil servants allow them to elect their supervisors and managers, and I suggest, not only would they get care equal to the private system but possibly superior to it.
In fact, with such a democratically administered system the government could even reduce this 16% of the total health care budgetary system up to a further 25%, that is, up to a further one hundred billion dollars from the original 400 billion dollars to 300 billion dollars, and still get a satisfactorily resulting system, just to prove that such a parallel-run government system to the private system would function just fine. The improvements would come from a caring system introduced through democratically-employee-elected managers and supervisors who would get greater satisfaction from their work even though they might receive less money remuneration.
This IDEA of employees electing their managers and supervisors, who incidentally utilize public money also, is NEW. If you wish to read further on this idea of employees in government services electing their supervisors and managers, please go to http:/way.to/EDUCATION and you will particularly see how this idea can be applied to correcting the mess that presently organized government services have created. Thank you, Leslie
Not sure if I have posted this to the correct place - navigating CNN website seems a little cryptic. Any ways, I wanted to share a book that is closely tied to the topic "Broken Government Blame Game." The book details are below and is an excellent read. Easy to to follow and I confirm it is a page turner. If everyone in America would only read this, the understanding of the whole financial crisis would come to light. I hope this helps.
The Looting of America: How Wall Street's Game of Fantasy Finance Destroyed Our Jobs, Pensions, and Prosperity, and What We Can Do About It (Paperback)
by Les Leopold (Author)
Hello Hello from the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
Rainy here.
LOL- oops! My days are running together. Missed the meeting by a day. blush
Is this meeting happening today or was it yesterday?
ChrisMorrow... are you still there?
I would like to make a couple of suggestions to those running this roundtable.
It is possible to have a realtime conference chat session where everyone sees everyone elses comments simultaneously in a chat room. I believe this would be more interactive and I could help in doing this and it can be done for free.
How about a Social Media (network) site dedicated towards the collaboration and roundtable of iReporting?
I have other ideas but would like to be in a forum with other people to share and collaborate with before listing anymore...
Thank you
I love CNN Student news. My 4-5th science class watches the show before our techer starts class everyday. Keep the awsome stories comeing.

In world war 2 hitler had kill 6 mill jews , After that
Worlds Funny Think
palastine people show curtsies on them and gave them chance to resettle in palastine. After that they started to make there own army, for these US and UK help them to crate there terrorist group to fight against palastine army. US and UK showing curtsies on them and gave all ammunition, they have become powerful. And now the palastine people become slave, once palastine used to supply food to jews now jews supplying food to palastine people. US and UK help jews because Hitler did genocide on jews 60 year back, now the people who help them in there bad time they jews doing genocide every day and bagging for all thing, bagging to pray in the mosque bagging for food, for every thing. The land owner had made bagger and bagger had made land owner. God say if you do good thing you will get good thing, but this is before 20th century to day if you do good thing you will get bad thing.
After all this suffer now the peace talk is going on since 20 to 30 years that will never come to an end because the people behind peace talk is US and UK the same people who help jews at that time to dominate on palastine country. They think that if cat dink milk by closing is eyes that nobody will know. This kind of acting is going on in this world, first give the wound and later give the medicine. They think nobody will know, I say every kid know what going in this entire world. I say stop all this funny think in this world now.
German have did genocide on jews and this jews people have help by palastine people. Now jews people is doing genocide on palastine people. This is going daily since 60 years. Now german people are coming to peace talk between jews and palastine people this is funniest think in this world. This problem is never going to be solved. If you want to solve this problem do one think send back jews people to Germany then only this is going to solve the problem. Then all the problem will be solved for life long.
