We'll be back next Thursday at 3 p.m. ET
Please join us here in a few minutes the blog for our weekly roundtable conversation.
We'll be talking about our latest weekend assignment -- "Your signature dish."
Comments will open at 3 p.m. ET and we'll look forward to talking to you.
Hi everyone and welcome to our roundtable. Sorry for the delay getting the post up.
We're excited to talk about this weekend's weekend assignment.
Good day to all
Hi everyone! You guys had some awesome submissions for the time-lapse assignment. I hope your excited about this weekend's challenge, too!
Hola peeps
Hi David...Hi everyone!
This is Anuja & Hetal from ShowMeTheCurry.com
Hello everybody
We are super excited about the weekend assignment! Had a quick question...how much over the 3 min limit is acceptable?
Please say 5 to 6 mins ;)
Buenos dias.
Who is behind CNN Mexico? Where are they based? Will the assignments be changing any time soon?
holla! especially to all you lovely foodies who are going to make our weekend assignment amaaaaaaazing.
Hi everyone!
Hey ladies, glad you could make it. Can't wait to hear your advice.
Good to see you too Ky42.
I'm going to put up an announcement to let everybody know we've started. so I'll be back i two seconds.
@foodtv well, i'd prefer as close to the limit as you can, since we're going to have a lot of submissions. but if you feel like you really can't make it less than five, that's fine. the time limit is mostly to encourage people to really edit themselves. :)
I would participate if I knew how to cook. :P
Hi @sbeasla! Well done on all the Lost reviews lately.
@JoyfulGypsy -- Funny you should ask. One of CNN Mexico's producers is standing right across from me and will be joining us in a few minutes.
@davidw - Thanks.
@everyone -- for those that don't know, Anuja and Hetal at foodtv produce their own Internet cooking show from their house.
EWillies also shows off his skills in the kitchen here on iReport, so I'm hoping they'll give us some tips. I know I've never shot video of cooking.
@Katie, thanks! I wouldn't have known about iReport if a screen hadn't popped up saying "You're new here, right?"..and walked me through the process. Nice job there. It worked obviously because I'm addicted. :)
@rachel8...thanks. We'll most definitely edit ourselves but somehow we have a hard time shutting ourselves up!
I am not very qualified to give tips as I am learning as I do them, but using two cameras has made it a lot easier since I can switch between the close up shots and distant shots without fiddling or breaking the flow.
Sorry I'm late.. Hello everyone
Lighting is the key for food videos. We've had some really delicious looking dishes look blah because of poor lighting.
@EWillies That's a great suggestion! Have you decided on your signature dish yet?
Hello everyone
@foodtv What are some ways to ensure good lighting that most everyone can do?
One other thing I have been learning is to shorten the steps. You do not need to see me cut the entire head of cabbage. A few strokes makes it less boring (so said my friend that watched the last one). So I think I can fit my arroz con pollo in 3 minutes.
@EWillies1961...we second your tip about the dual cameras. It really makes things look professional.
Since we've got some new people this week (which is awesome) let me just take a second to explain how the weekend assignments work.
Here is the assignment with the instructions, so you can check it out and start thinking about it. http://www.ireport.com/ir-topic-stories.jspa?topicId=412634
We'll turn on the upload button tomorrow and you'll have until Sunday at midnight to upload your finished project.
@Katie
Arroz con Pollo. It is a Latin American dish of chicken cooked in with rice.
Hey guys! Busy day today, just checking in. I love to eat, so yeah, feed me. I'm kind of interested myself in learning to cook. Anybody else in a similar boat?
Hi all. I am Juan, and I am the supervising producer for CNNMexico.com. I just saw a message asking about CNNMexico. I am willing to answer any question.
@EWillies1961 excellent tip about shortening the steps on video, especially all the preparation. think about it like a cooking show - all the ingredients are already laid out, chopped, measured. that saves a lot of time...most people don't need guidance on how to chop an onion, for example.
@foodtv
I need to improve on my lighting. I am going to see if I turn on some laterel lights if it will help.
@katie
When we started out, we used halogen shop lights from Home Depot. These are really harsh but we solved the problem by draping a thin white sheet on a garment rack in front of the lights.
@nsaidi - same here. I can't really cook. My signature dish would be a joke. :P I'm interested in this assignment though to see what other iReporters come up with. :)
Also can't wait for a walk in our shoes! Super excited about that one.
@Juan - Is there a team running CNN Mexico or one person? Where are you based? Will the assignments be changing soon?
mmmmmmm, arroz con pollo. can i have some, EWillies1961? you're making me hungry. :)
CNNMexico.com just launched a few weeks ago and we're really excited that they're wanting to incorporate iReporters into their coverage from the beginning.
It's going to be really cool.
Anyone seeing "Alice in Wonderland" tonight? Share your photos, video and review with us! http://www.ireport.com/ir-topic-stories.jspa?topicId=16559
Everything I cook takes hours to do, I enjoy filling the house with the smell of paradise.. How do I fit that into 2 minutes? lol
As a newbie the shop lights are a perfect budget friendly option. After 3 years, we have finally progressed to professional lighting and loving it!
This is just a general question at the iReport producers but lately, I noticed the stuff on my profile isn't being updated (like the number of my iReports, page views, etc.). Did something happen?
Just curious....what's the purpose of posting our iPhone homepage? Will this be used in some upcoming story or what?
@rachel8
I will do that with most of my stuff this time around. In my case it will be less noisy too:) I go complaints on the bangs.
@hhanks, I might see it tomorrow night. I'll totally share then!
Welcome sbeasla - Love your "Lost" recaps!
@JoyfulGypsy That assignment was pitched by a CNN producer who's obsessed with all things tech and social media. He's planning on turning the homepages into a gallery or story for the Tech section of CNN.com. Not sure of the angle it will take -- but it's interesting to see a) how people use their smart phones and b) what mobile homepages say about a person.
@sbeasla -- I'm not sure if we're having issues with the stats or not. I'll check with our developers and get them to look at it.
Thanks for the heads up.
@hhanks, thanks! I'm curious to see how it'll end!
Another great way to shorten videos is to speed up the clip, mute the sound and add some background music. It cuts the monotony and shows the whole process.
HHanks, are you suggesting we videotape part of the movie? Just kidding.. Geez, I really want to go see Avatar again and again..lol
@Katie - I LOVE social media. I hope there are more assignments related to that.
@Davidw - thanks for your feedback. :)
@DaElmer -- That's a good question. Anybody got tips on how to cut down a video without leaving out important steps?
We have a few assignments in place, but the one we are pushing right now is called Mexico 2020, which will be part of a TV Show airing on March 11th. We´ll have a panel of 5 prominent mexicans debating about the future of Mexico and we are asking for questions from ireporters to use in the show.
Just jumping in for a second to say hello. I'm head-down finishing a timelapse piece for tomorrow that uses lots of the incredible iReports we received last weekend. Can't wait to share it!
@davidw...not sure if you saw this

@JoyfulGypsy -- Juan's a bit of a rock star here at .com since CNNMexico was such a huge help after Chile earthquake. Everybody's coming up to introduce themselves to him.
I'll flag your question for him.
@foodtv - Good suggestion, now I need to find someone to show me how to do those things..lol
@DaElmer
A good editing software is the answer.
@davidw
Is CNN Mexico restricted to Mexican issues or to Latin America? (ie., Panama Canal stuff etc).
@JoyfulGypsy We have a fully-staffed newsroom working off Mexico but I am based in Atlanta. The focus of the site is Mexico but of course we also report on the world news. We have had these assignments up for a few days and we are testing waters.
@DaElmer If you don't have the editing software to cut it down, I'd still encourage you to try out the assignment! We can always edit submissions on our end.
@EWillies1961 The target audience is Mexico, but we are open to other ireports, especially for the assignment on the world Cup, in which we ask for videos and pictures about how you are preparing for Sudafrica 2010.
@foodtv - I'm still learning as I go.. 2 years ago I didn't know how to turn on a computer or how to shoot video.. Still learning. I'm more a hand-on person, learning by watching is easier for me..
Any programs or software anyone can recommend for me would be appreciated..
What does Mexico 2020 mean? I'd appreciate some examples or feedback as to what aspect of Mexico's future you are asking about.
Ever since the Haiti earthquake, then Chile, followed by Japan - I'm getting a lot of comments from 2012 believers especially now that the Earth has rotated and shortened our days. Any thoughts on that? I don't really buy the 2012 theory but all the big earthquakes are starting to freak me out.
@jamunfer
We have some Latin inspired recipe videos. How do get them up on CNN Mexico?
@everyone I've got to head out for the day, but Dave, Rachel and Juan are here to answer any other questions you may have.
Can't wait to see your delicious dishes this weekend. Have fun cooking!
Also, what are the deadlines for each of the CNN Mexico assignments?
Hey everyone! Happy Thursday! Sorry I'm late. 1. Happy Birthday @Davidw! 2. The link on the banner to the roundtable is broken!
@Katie, thanks.. We will have to see, I cook the best Country Spare Ribs on the grill but, they take 4-6 hours..lol
I knew you did edit vid's since you have done mine before. Sometimes I forget things..lol
@DaElmer
Microsoft MovieMaker is good free beginner editing software. Needless to say, there are some great professional ones that you have to pay for like Sony Vegas, Ulead Video Studio, and Mac's version (can't recall the name).
Happy Birthday, David!
Today is my husband's birthday, too.
Happy birthday David
@KyleHD Thank you. Also thanks for heads up on the broken link. HTML isn't my strong suit, especially when I'm in a hurry.
@sbeasla - Watch my recent video about my theory about this.. The Sun and the Earthquakes are related I really do believe. There WAS A 6.4 this morning..
Happy Birthday David! We're gonna head out. Nice chatting and happy cooking!
@Katie
@DaElmer
Before using Roxio Video wave I have used http://www.avs4you.com/register.aspx?sct=inc&ct=avsmedia&cid=77 . You can try it before you buy. It has a one year subscription for $39.
i need to head out as well, but - SEND YOUR SIGNATURE DISHES THIS WEEKEND! i'll be cooking up a storm, too. :) i want the final product that we make from all your contributions to have CNN viewers licking their screens. :D
@foodtv -- I appreciate you visiting and look forward to seeing your dishes.
Happy Birthday, DavidW!
Anyway, I have to get back to work. Perhaps someone from CNN Mexico will answer my questions (above) when they get a moment. I'll come back later to check. Thanks.
@davidw no problemo, it happens!
@JoyfulGypsy 2020 is the brand name for the TV show in which a panel of 5 prominent mexicans will talk about how they envision Mexico in 10 years. They come from different backgrounds: sports, politics, culture, music... the idea is asking questions about how they see they future, for example. Do you think Mexico national team will win a world cup in the next 10 years? or about Mexico movie making industry, or how about the violence problem in 10 years...
Regarding the deadlines, we have not set any... this is a new tool for our audience in Mexico and we are trying to develop a culture before changing the assignments too fast.
@foodtv Food is always interesting for Mexico. Mexican cuisine is one of the most popular cuisines in the world so If you have material related to food, they are welcome, even though we don´t have an assignment on that yet.
@davidw
Happy Birthday.. Now you are one year closer in age to me man:)
6.4 earthquake this morning - 210 km (130 miles) N of Luganville, Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu
And Chili just had another 5.1 offshore an hour ago......
zdan fixed the site announcement. I'm a trained monkey on html
@EWillies1961 THANKS, I will check that out, I love your posts that you do, it was you that made me decide to do more reports showing my face more.
@jamunfer
Thanks. Would the same login info that we use for CNN apply for CNNMexico? Or, do we need to re-register?
@DaElmer interesting theory!
@DaElmer
Thanks!
If I had a rolling pin, maybe I'd make pierogi from scratch. Then again, that'd be a 4-5 hour endeavor.
@everyone -- So we've still got a few minutes, so does anyone have any other questions?
Or does anybody have any cool projects in the works (iReport or otherwise?)
If we missed you question at this point, go ahead and ask again.
Would the same login info that we use for CNN apply for CNNMexico? Or, do we need to re-register?
@foodtv -- You can upload with your regular CNN iReport login. The main difference is that the assignments and the instructions are in Spanish.
@foodtv We use the same login.
Thanks @davidw
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVID!!!! Just dropping to say that, on my way to work. Have a GREAT day!!
@KyleHD - Quite honestly, makes me think that maybe I should have lead a different life... For 2 days I covered the internet looking into what was happening on the sun. Watch the first video I made just before the Chili quake. I really wish SOMEONE or SOMEBODY can answer these questions I have about what I have learned..
Thanks KCRep. Hope you have a great day at work.
I might make an iReport this weekend from the Irish Soda Bread competition. The lady I ride the bus has been telling me about it for months, so I'm gonna go check it out! Should be fun!
@EWillies1961 No, THANK YOU.. My wife says she see's a different side of me and she like's it..
I just think it's really cool you guys have this iReport section. I LOVE it and really enjoy sharing my thoughts here. I'm working on being a superstar. :)
As a member of the Patriot Guard Riders, I am looking into doing something to promote what we do.. The 1st video CNN put on the air for me, inspired me to join this great cause..
@KyleHD - I've never heard of an Irish Soda Bread competition. Is it for best bread? Or for biggest?
I think I know the answer but ginormous baked goods are awesome.
@sbeasla - It takes time.. You will get there. I have twice now..lol
@DaElmer -- That would be a really interesting video. I think it's great that you take time to show support for troops' families.
@KyleHD, your mention of bread reminds me of friendship bread. I think I might start that up again.
@davidw from what I know, i'm almost certain it's judged on taste. I'm debating if I want to give a go and try baking my own! that would be fun!
@DaElmer - thanks! I know it takes time. I'm a newbie, only got a handful of iReports posted, so I'm ok with it. :) I just get excited by the possibilities. :)
Thanks David, I completed my FIRST MISSION last Friday, I downloaded the video and pics to I-Report. The one video I did, I almost broke down during the video.. Very emotional that day..
@sbeasla -- I'm glad you found us. Be sure to check out our Assignment page, so you can see some of the other stories we're working on.
http://www.ireport.com/community/assignment
These assignments are just suggestions though. We really love it when people share the stories they're passionate about.
@DaElmer -- I hope you don't have to do too many more missions, but I'm glad you're there if needed.
I also have to be careful to Respect the families that we are supporting.. One of the members up here LOST his son in Iraq, they have started a care package group that sends stuff to our troops..
@David, I will let you know that the Patriot Guard will escort soldier/s coming home or going to war.. We also do escorts and flag lines for out fallen ones. We do more rides with troops coming home:)
@DavidW - how can you just share what you're interested in? Seems like everything is tied to an assignment? When posting do you just not choose an assignment to tag it to?
If anyone has time, check this family out and what they are doing about it.. Lost their son to Iraq and fighting back-
http://www.palmisanocarepackageproject.com/index.htm
The Father is going BACK to IRAQ to finish his son's year... Not with the military but as a truck driver..
@sbeasla -- You can send stuff in with that is not attached to an assignment. Just choose none in the assignment field.
@sbeasla - Pick the assignment that looks best for your I-Report. Always remember that you can have UP TO 10 tags on your video- Use them all.. By tags I mean use the suggestions that pop up.. Any questions that I can help with just give me a shout..
Thanks DavidW!
We keep an eye out for things as they come to the site, so the assignments are more a way for us to organize things so we can find them again later.
@David- How about I make a HOW-TO VIDEO for newbies? I'm not the best but I do know the system? What do you think? lol
I have to go, but I want to post one link to make up for my super-boring contribution to last weekend's time lapse assignment.
I shot one of my dog last night and it was cute, even though he doesn't move much.
Good night and have a great week.
http://www.twitvid.com/A7C92
Just seen there were 3 earthquakes off the coast of California in the last few hours..
THANKS DAVID - see ya next week
I'm bored these need to be longer..lol

A CALL TO ACTION: MOVING PHILADELPHIA AND ITS CHILDREN TO COMMIT TO NONVIOLENCE
PHILADELPHIA, PA (USA) – 8 MARCH 2010 – The House Of Umoja, Inc. (http://www.houseofumoja.org) is initiating a Call To Action beginning on Sunday, 28 March 2010 (Palm Sunday) through Sunday, 4 April 2010 (Easter Sunday) in an effort to move the City of Philadelphia and its children to commit to nonviolence and create solutions for the critical underlying issues that may have triggered two disturbances involving teenagers in Center City Philadelphia on 16 February 2010 and 3 March 2010.
“The House Of Umoja, Inc. is initiating a Call To Action to parents, educators, legislators, law enforcement professionals, business and religious leaders, and concerned community members to form Partnerships of Peace with the House of Umoja, Inc. Let’s work together to move the City of Philadelphia and its children to commit to nonviolence through the signing of the IMANI Pledge™; to create a nurturing environment for our children at school and at home; and to bring healing to our communities. As we move to design and implement solutions to the underlying issues that triggered the events of 16 February 2010 and 3 March 2010, it is imperative that our children become active participants in this process. We must also include our children’s voice in any and all dialogues and decisions about bringing peace and healing to our communities and our city,” remarked Queen Mother Falaka Fattah, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the House Of Umoja, Inc.
On January 1, 1974 Queen Mother Falaka Fattah coordinated a conference which was attended by over 400 gang members. David Fattah was the chief negotiator with the attendees who signed an agreement he authored called the IMANI Pact. Through its Faith Of Our Fathers Peace Campaign and the IMANI Pledge™ launched in 2006, the House Of Umoja, Inc. is moving a new generation of children in the City of Philadelphia to commit to nonviolence.
“The IMANI PledgeTM is a contractual agreement signed by children and youth of the City of Philadelphia that they will not engage in acts of violence in and outside of school. In signing the Pledge, the youth and children acknowledge that their forefathers brought peace to the City of Philadelphia as youths, and that they too, can do the same. The Pledge ends with the commitment statement ‘Let my word be my bond’,” explained Mr. David Fattah.
The House Of Umoja, Inc. has provided a life line for over approximately 3,000 young urban males between the ages of 15 through 18 in Philadelphia. The internationally acclaimed organization’s successful track record of transforming and working with youths has moved universities and institutions that include, but are not limited to, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Prevention and the Center for Disease Control to seek the expertise of Queen Mother Falaka Fattah and her husband Mr. David Fattah in the areas of gang reduction, youth programming, and community organizing. Former United States Presidents Jimmy Carter and the late Ronald Reagan have recognized the House Of Umoja, Inc. for its pioneering work which has been documented in published articles such as A Summons To Life, by Robert Woodson of the American Enterprise Institute in 1981 and The Violent Juvenile Offender by Paul DeMuro and Richard Allison of the National Council On Crime And Delinquency in 1984.
For further information about the House Of Umoja, Inc.’s “Call To Action” and the IMANI Pledge™, contact the House Of Umoja, Inc. by telephone at (215) 473-5893 or send an e-mail to: falakafattah@aol.com.
