The latest and greatest on CNN iReport, brought to you by Team iReport.
Please join us here in the blog at 3 p.m. ET for our weekly roundtable discussion.
We're looking forward to talking with you.
The weekend assignment project is going great, and nsaidi will be telling us about our next challenge: "View from up high."
We were really impressed by the response to last week's challenge. Cooking a dish on camera and then editing it into an entertaining story is a really tough, but iReporters really rose to the challenge (the food looked great too!).
We can't wait to see what everyone comes up with this weekend.
Comments will open at 3 p.m. ET. We'll talk with you then.
Hi everyone. Hope you're having a great week.
Good afternoon everyone..
Howdy, folks.
Holla! Happy Thursday! :)
Hello everyone
Hello everyone!
hello
Hey there!
Hi.. I'm a new iReporter. How does the roundable work? Just commenting or is there some sort of chat system that we can use?
Before we get started, I want to remind everybody to follow us on twitter and be a fan of our facebook group.
We use them to shoot out announcements (like about this roundtable) and to bring extra attention to cool iReports we've approved.
You can find us on twitter at twitter.com/cnniReport and on facebook at facebook.com/ireport.
Howdy folks..been awhile...usually at school but have sick kid at home...fun fun! He's doing better though!
WB ChrisM, unwinding after the Olympics?
Cool. done @davidw...
a big shoutout to @nsaidi for staying late last week vetting all those protests pieces in California! Great job! I even got a fellow student to become an iReporter and she was vetted her first time at bat with some photos at the protests. She loves the format!
Hi Daveying99. Right now we're just using the comments. It's not pretty, but it works.
So feel free to jump in with any questions
@DavidW - I'm following you guys there. That's how I found out about this place!
Welcome @daveying99 and yes. If you have any questions or comments go right ahead. And the iReport team will try to answer ya.
Good week for me. Excited about many many things :)
Following both.. Looks like a fun project this weekend!
@Daveying99 - welcome to iReport!
@MelissaF -- Hope your kid's feeling better soon.
That's great about your friend too. I'm glad it was a positive experience for her.
I would really love it if everyone would tell their friends to check us out if they're interested in news or storytelling.
@ChrisMorrow - that's awesome that you had a good week. :)
Holler at you all. Thanks for your hard work davidw.
@Daveying99 Welcome, hit the refresh page to get updates..
good afternoon everybody
And thanks for the hard work MelissaF
@davidw...thanks very much...pink eye is taking a while to clear up this time around..YUK!
I love the "Church Sign Project" great pictures..lol
Thanks for the warm welcome guys :) Are there any videos of the iReport team at SxSW? Would be cool to see what happened at the crowdsourcing panel...
@davidw been getting lots of error messages from ireport lately..is it just me or is tech support aware of the situation?
Hey everybody, just a quick warning. We're having a bit of site trouble, but we're coming in and out.
I'm back now though
Blog went down for a few seconds but seems to be back now:)
So what's new in the wonderful world of iReports?
welcome @Daveying99 :)
I'm here if you have any questions.
Did you want us to take Close-ups from high above or just regular pictures? LOL- FOGGY here today.. Grrr..
In an ideal scenario, you can go up to a high floor in a building or go up to an observation deck off a bluff and take a picture. Or maybe you climb up to the second floor of your house or shoot down into something (being safe at all times of course). By doing this, you can show the patterns and normally hidden things below.
@daveying99 -- The panel isn't until this weekend, but I'm pretty sure the videos will be available to stream after the event. Here's a link to an assignment if you're going to SXSW http://www.ireport.com/ir-topic-stories.jspa?topicId=419064
@DaElmer glad to hear it wasn't just me.
Thanks @DAELMER
I'm constantly onto other projects. Just met the President of Mexico and off to Rio, florida, Haiti soon.
@davidw when i get emails to from ireport of a new link bc of a comment or from a new ireport from someone I'm following...when I clicked the link it was giving me error messages too..
Hey @ChrisMorrow... Saw your ugly dog show video report. That was a really cute bald dog. Poor thing... :)
@adriana71 Check out the church signs.. Pretty funny ones.
Hi all!
@DaElmer Again, you don't have to be super far away from the subject. I guess I would say be creative; even a few feet above can create a stunning image. ;)
hey where @hhanks??
lol, up high makes me think I need to climb something... Like the darn Ski Jump again- The largest on in the USA of course..lol
Welcome lila! MelissaF -- hhanks is right here with us, but I think he's pretty busy right now.
Ok, thanks @davidw. I'm going to check it out online since I'm not in Austin.
Say, I just published a couple new and slightly unusual assignments. Would love to see folks join in!
1. SXSW. I'm super flattered to be on a rockstar panel all about citizen journalism and social media. If you've got questions for the panelists (Pete Cashmore! Randi Zuckerberg!), send 'em on. http://www.ireport.com/ir-topic-stories.jspa?topicId=419064
2. We are CNN. Our friends in CNN Marketing are making a new campaign, and they want iReport to be the star. They're looking for videos about the ways people use CNN. http://www.ireport.com/ir-topic-stories.jspa?topicId=418963
Oh yeah, those church signs rock as several of you have mentioned. We've been really impressed with the submissions and the response. What do you guys think? Throwing this out there -- I was kind of wondering, what other kinds of things like this do people all seem to have and want to share with each other?
@daveying99 -- lila can tell you more, but if you have any questions you would like the crowdsourcing panel to talk about, you can post them at the assignment link I just sent.
Here it is again since it's hard to find stuff http://www.ireport.com/ir-topic-stories.jspa?topicId=419064
@lila That would be so cool. I doing something new for tonight's upload. We'll see if it works.
**IDEA** Since there have been So Many Earthquakes lately, could I-Report/CNN put a category for "Earthquakes"? Besides the ones you have now, those pretty much specify Chile. I would like one where people could see earthquakes around the world in one place. Just a thought..
@ChrisMorrow What was it like meeting the president of Mexico? Sounds like an exciting project.
Also, anyone headed to SXSW? I know, kinda jumping around here.
@nsaidi...@hhanks usually is busy...lol..well tell him I said HI!
I love the Dairy Queen sign of God I found and uploaded...
@ChrisMorrow Wow you lead a very exciting life. Amazing!!!
Hi gang! I thought earthquake preparedness, which I've been trying to get the word out would be a good topic as well?
Yes Chris, how was the meeting with the president. And most importantly, how did you get access to him?
Is HLN part of CNN? I was contacted by them, didn't realize they were CNN too..
OOHHH...We Are CNN sounds like a lot of fun!
I'm going to be on vacation this week. I look forward to taking lots of shots and contributing to this weeks assignment!
@nsaidi Ah I wish I could go to SXWS, but currently we are still umemp. But I do have good lead, keep your fingers crossed.
@DaElmer -- What we usually do when their is an earthquake is put up a breaking news assignment for people to share their experience.
Then if it turns out to be a major event, such as Chile or Haiti, we will create a dedicated assignment for that quake.
The iReports show up on the site the same, but it's just a lot easier to find stories.
@Adriana71, that's my situation. I wish you all the best!
@sbeasla -- I hope you have a great trip. and share lots of photos.
@David, I understand, just wish the increase in different countries I just wish there was a central place to see or post the newest ones around the globe.
I will be MISSING the next 2 meetings:(
I'm going to JAMAICA NEXT WEEK!!! For a week...
Anyone have suggestions for I-reports from Jamaica? I don't think I will be able to upload from there but will try..
@DaElmer - HLN is part of the CNN family and they use a lot of iReports.
That brings up a really good topic -- when we approve a story and it it gets the CNN iReport stamp that means it's available for all CNN networks, not just CNN.
That means producers at CNN, HLN, CNN.com, CNN International, CNN Radio and CNN Espanol and the new CNNMexico.com could all potentially use your iReports.
I'm sure I'm forgetting some of the networks.
Hi Lila,
I'll do my best. sounds fun :)
@hhanks ugh another strip your shirt off and smile trailer for Twilight.
AWESOME @David- I'm really hoping that Darian from HLN can get a story idea of mine some coverage. A soldier dies and the Parents have stepped up. The Dad is going to Iraq in a few weeks to finish his son's tour of duty... And Mom is at home sending care packages to soldiers....
@DaElmer -- Jamaica will be quite a change from Michigan. Have a great time.
We have a bunch of travel travel projects you could try.
You could even try our weekend assignments for those weekends if you can upload.
Here's a link to our assignment page where you might get some ideas: http://www.ireport.com/community/assignment
I know I am doing the one minute walk I saw.. I'm sure I will find something, I'm there a week..
@MarieSager -- Sorry it took so long to say hi. Earthquake preparedness would be an excellent story that I'm betting folks would be interested int.
By the way, I don't know if you noticed, but your Captain EO iReport was generating a lot of buzz on twitter. I even saw that actress Holly Robinson Pete (of "Hanging with Mr. Cooper" fame) had tweeted it out.
@nsaidi
The president of mexico isn't as serious as the president of the USA. Very interesting and I hope to do more with him. Maybe actually get to sit down with him soon.
I love the "How-to" section that appeared.. Now my wife says I need to do a How-To Video on SHAVING...lol
@davidw, so there are two types of assignments? breakingnews & dedicated? How are they different? And can we create our own assignments for topics we think would be interesting to the audience?
@hhanks
I wish that trailer was out when I spoke with the new twilight actors in Vancouver.
Hey guys, just jumping back in here
@DaElmer that walk in Jamaica sounds awesome! Really looking forward to that project.
Also that idea you sent of a dad going to Iraq to finish his son's tour, that is amazing. Is this a story you are working on currently now? We need to get eyes on it.
@Davidw: Yes, Henry was so kind to forward me the HollyRobinsonPete link, so much appreicated as I would have never known. That was so unexpected.
Have posted a few Earthquake Preparedness iReports with informative links. Living in LA it's always on our mind! Will see if I can work on a video! :)
How to is still up? :)
@nsaidi, A producer for HLN had me send all the info and back round I had about this couple. I JUST found out the Dad has PASSED the test to go, he is leaving in the next 2 weeks!! The MOM wants to do a camera interview I-Report but I'm wondering what HLN wants to do IF, IF they do it..
@hhanks Where have they been using the entertainment reviews stuff lately??
@mariesager
I covered 2 years in a row - earthquake drills - It was a California program.
@Chris- yes it is, mine is the newest..lol From the new people that have contacted me, this is very helpful! I feel good:)
@daveying99 -- Good question. First off, we always want iReporters to tell the stories they feel passionately about even if it's not something we are asking for.
You know what's going on in your community better than we do, so we're always checking CNN iReport for interesting stories.
Breaking news stories are fairly straight forward -- we ask people to share stories about big stories in the news.
We also create assignments for projects that CNN is working on, or we think would be good stories.
On facebook last night I found out the Mother of this soldier posted my video on I-Report, she is floored that I don't even know here. She wants me to do a I-Report with her. I'm not that good, I need help..lol
Sorry that was such a long answer.
We also try to create assignments that give people an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the news, even if there isn't a big breaking news event going on near them.
@Chris, With all the earthquakes happening, it might be time to post again! Never hurts to keep earthquake preparedness alive. Pixel actually submitted a great video as well a few months ago.
cool @daelmer - I will check it out.
@DaElmer -- I think you'll do a great job. Sincerity, passion and a great story are more important than technical skill.
@davidw 30 sec sound bite....
@adriana71 -- yeah, I need to practice what we preach. 8)
Wow.. this is one big comment thread :) I have so many questions about iReport for an academic study I'm doing on the future of news. I wonder if some of you would be interested to be interviewed for this? Either from the iReport crew, or the iReport community?
Thanks David, I'm more nervous than she is. I am hoping to hear from HLN or someone saying they want to do a story about they are doing. There is a Bill in the works the is named for their son.. Free shipping to soldiers.. This weekend IF I haven't heard back I will do an interview..
Hi @davidw
I was really surprised that my video
The Forgotten Project
http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-410102
got such little views.
Can you give me insight as to why it wasn't very popular? Looking to learn.
@DavidW: I was actually thinking of "Are you prepared for a natural disaster?" type of assignment. Or "How are you preparing for an earthquake?" Something along those line. I took a picture of a few items I put together in my house and thought it would be interesting to see if others are doing the same.
@daveying99 Sure, that would be fun.
@Chris.. such the joker with 900 views. jk, I like to learn too:)
@hhanks Yeah, the big one we did on the oscars which I loved! I'm talking about writers and such..I miss cnn.com/live with me and Rajiim...any word on what happened to the anchors? Do they still work in some way with Turner?
@daveying99 -- Shoot me an email next week and I'll see what we can do.
@mariesager I was thinking something on those same lines...I think it would be totally beneficial..
This is the story about the Soldier who died and now the DAD is going to Iraq..
http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-416764
Hi all and sorry I am late. Reading through the blog I simply love Lilas assignment on Why CNN.
@chrismorrow @Daelmer.. ha ha ha lol,, woot I've got tears i my eyes. :)
@ChrisMorrow -- That was a really good story. I'm really not sure why it didn't get so many page views. There's still some mystery to this whole process -- sometimes stories we think will be winners just don't catch on and then sometimes stories just take off.
David what's going on? On this report I put Great report Lee and it was zapped. I know I have some haters but geez
http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-418594#
Welcome EWillies, I'm about to leave.. Good reports this week:)
Hey everyone, I'm going to dodge out now, have a good one!
@MelissaF, Yes, I was thinking beneficial as well, as I would rather hear from people before an earthquake than after. I was working in Huntington Harbor this week and someone out of the blue who just moved to the west coast asked me what should they do in case of an earthquake. This is a great platform to spread the word.
I love Chris's reports, she does a great job. Just making fun because I like her work:)
@EWillies1961 -- Welcome and thank you for the reminder.
I hope everyone will check out the Why CNN assignment.
Thanks @adriana71. I'll message you on your profile! Any other iReporter who wants to be interviewed for my paper? :)
@davidw, thanks. Will catch you next week!
It's back now David. thanks
@davidw
it just doesn't promote me to do more stories like. There was so much risk involved too.
i have to say my favorite part about my job is watching viral videos! i just watched this hilarious song about chatroullette!
What's the next assignment? I really enjoyed the cooking one. I saved so many recipes. Thanks to everyone.
Thanks Daelmer :)
@iReporttwo -- the next assignment is "A view from above" basically send a picture from something high.
I've got to go, so I hope everyone has a great weekend.
Ciao All!
Have a wonderful day! :)
Sounds cool. David the site was unavaliable for a couple of minutes did you notice?
Yes the site was down for a moment. Sorry about that. See everyone next week.
Adios one and all.
bye @adriana71!
@ChrisMorrow, like the perspectives in the video + the topic. But maybe viewers want more action in the videos? Not sure about the pageviews.
If ANYONE can help me in spreading this story or doing their own story about this family.... Darian B from HLN has the details... Any help is great....
Besides my own I-Report I mean..
Adios everyone!
See you all in 3 weeks, off to Jamaica next week:)
That was my first roundtable with iReport. Very interesting to hear everyone. Is this happening every thursday?
Same time, same place.. But I'll be on a white sand beach relaxing I hope:) Have a great month!
Cool thanks @DaElmer. Don't worry about a thing in Jamaica. Every little thing's gonna be alright :)
@MelissaF, Yes, I was thinking beneficial as well, as I would rather hear from people before an earthquake than after. I was working in Huntington Harbor this week and someone out of the blue who just moved to the west coast asked me what should they do in case of an earthquake.

We hear so much about the adoption of Haitian children and other children of color when they are infants and toddlers. What happens to them? Why don't we hear more about their lives after ten years with their adoptive parents? Are they raised to become servants to the homeowners? What becomes of them?
