The latest and greatest on CNN iReport, brought to you by Team iReport.
Please join us here in the blog for our weekly roundtable discussion. We'll be talking about our upcoming weekend assignment – Walk in our shoes.
This is the long-awaited collaborative art project that we've been talking about for months and we're really looking forward to seeing everyone's videos.
We're hoping to hear from people all over the world, so please share this link with your friends. It will be a great way to celebrate the first days of spring.
We'll also be happy to talk about any other questions, comments or concerns you may have.
We'll open comments at 3 p.m. ET.
Hi Hola Bonjour Ciao!!!
Hi everyone and welcome.
Let me start out by inviting any new people to feel free to jump in with your questions or comments. We're pretty informal.
You will have to create an iReport account to comment.
Hi VickieMaid.
How are things in Second Life.
@davidw
Chris Morrow has done a phenomenal job recently in Vancouver and should be commended and rewarded for her professional work. Are there annual awards that are given away to iReporters and if so I would like to nominate Chris Morrow for one of these?
It has been very very busy to say the least and I still have a couple updates yet to come out!!!
Hi. Hope everyone is well this beautiful, sunny day. :o)
Hola
about mid 60s here in Tennessee!!!
Hi ThinkWinWin. We don't have any official awards. We are lucky to have a bunch of great iReporters.
Has any thought been given to my proposed idea to create a dedicated CNN Social Network for iReporters to better collaborate and share knowledge?
Hi guys! How are you! Thanks for participating in the aerial photos project, those of you who did. There were so many awesome pictures submitted. It was almost overwhelming.
And then I also have just a few more reports from the RPG World of Warcraft yet, one will include a video I have ready.
Hey iReport land!
Here's something I would like to address today.
I have uploaded many pictures to the Travel section in the last year and a half and many of my submissions have been vetted and used in the weekly travel collages. However, there's never a link to my original post and the collages only sometimes include my full name, many times only my last name is shown and other times neither my first nor my last name are shown at all in the collages. Also, the travel collages do not include my user name (JoyfulGypsy), so anyone that sees "Lulis Leal" doesn't know that Lulis Leal is "JoyfulGypsy" and doesn't have a way of linking to my original post or profile. Because of this, despite the fact that I have 213 vetted iReports, only 372,000 page view counts are reflected in my profile, which is a very inaccurate count, considering people look at my pictures in collages. Is there a way photos in the weekly travel collages can be linked to the original posts so that when people click on the collage pictures they go to the original post and see the entire report with text and multiple pictures? Since you're keeping track of page views, it would be nice to have an "accurate" count. Also, would you include the person's user name, along with their real name, so people will know where to find more of our work?
Here's a typical gallery example: http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/03/17/gallery.st.patricks.festivities/index.html Pictures 5, 6 and 7 are mine. In picture #5 my full name is used. In picture #6, only my last name is used. In picture #7 my first name, my last name and even my location are not shown. This is not a complaint, just an observation I would like to address.
@nsaidi, got one I'm working on Nicole about the WoW economy, should be out tomorrow.
Maybe we should create some annual awards if for nothing else for recognition alone. Some of the work that some of these people are doing is simply phenomenal. What do you think about having an end of the year nominating and voting process for iReporter awards?
By the way I do have a concern that needs to be addressed and that is when I give people the url to view my reports they come up with a blank page. What is my proper url so I can give them the right one???
@VickieMaid Thanks! Sounds great. I'm not familiar with the society inside World of Warcraft. Is it like Second Life in that community way?
@VickieMaid -- you can see all of your iReports here: http://www.ireport.com/people/VickieMaid
@VickieMaid - This link should work for you - http://www.ireport.com/people/VickieMaid
@Nsaidi, its a lot different Nicole but I will touch on just the basics and as I said in my post a bit ago a comparision of sorts as well.
@JoyfulGypsy -- It would be great to be able to include hits on CNN interactives as part of the iReport page views, but it's just not technically possible.
CNN style is generally to only use the person's full name on first reference. So that's how we do it.
So, who's ready for the next Weekend Assignment?
@ Katie and Henry, I given that before and somehow they would get the blank page and then I give them the Second Life link and tell them to back track to find them, I'll try that myself also. Also I would do that and get the not foundmessage.
Well, the link doesn't seem to work here. Anyway, I was referring to the St. Patrick's Day collage above.
Sure, what's up in the hit parade?
@JoyfulGypsy -- to add to David's point, all of your photos have a credit embedded on the photo that has your full name. The captions read like an article, where we use the full name first, then last name on additional references.
Hello everybody.
Thanks David. Ok. How about including a person's user name along with their real name?
FYI- there's an internal problem viewing some photo galleries and interactive that CNN web dev team are working to fix.
@JoyfulGypsy We found the article you're referring to. It looks like you're properly credited. It's very cool that your photos were included right alongside Getty photographs, by the way. They're great shots!
Happy Thursday everyone! :) I would have totally missed the meeting if it wasn't for your tweet right now!
Hello.
hello room!
@JoyfulGypsy -- A lot of iReporters are really uncomfortable with their real names and their user names being linked. We'll give it some thought, but that's not a decision I want to rush into.
@ KyleHD
Hi Kyle! If it wasn't for Twitter I don't know what we'd do.
Greetings, Earthlings! I have returned! =)
How can I change my Screen name? I have asked for help on this many times in emailing the feedback option but get no response. Can someone help me get my screen name changed? Is it possible to embed a logo as my screen name similar to the way many of you are doing here such as idavidw?
hehehehe, I'm the only virtual ireporter here!!! LOL!!!
So gang - a few new CNN iReport assignments to tell you about.
First, CNN's newest show John King, USA launches Monday - with an online sneak peek tomorrow at Noon. They're going to invite iReporters to take part in a weekly discussion. They call it, Make Your Case, America.
This week's topic is health reform. The question they want you to ask is whether President Obama is doing enough or too much to push health care legislation through Congress. You can add your voice to conversation here:
http://www.ireport.com/ir-topic-stories.jspa?topicId=420613
John King's producers are eager to use your iReports on air.
@mpgomatic -- I'm so glad that finally got sorted out. Welcome back and I apologize for the inconvenience.
@nsaidi, I was just talking the other day I can't imagine my life with out Twitter and Facebook. It's become an important tool in my life and communcation! And remember life without YouTube?! What did we do with our time?!
Thank you, Katie. I really appreciate that. I realize my name is embedded on the upper right corner of the photo in tiny print, but really, it's illegible and people generally don't even notice it.
I'm sorry I have to go. I'm at work and have to get back. I'll hop back in later to catch up.
By the way, I'm looking forward to the weekend assignment and I'm working on a cool submission. :o) Ciao! Have a great weekend.
@Tyson R the going 2 use the bits frm the video we already uploaded? Or do thy wnt somthing new?
@thinkwinwin -- I'll send you an email after the roundtable.
The embedded logos are for CNN iReport staff, so you know you're talking to us.
@davidw - Thanks so much ... glad to be back!
@davidw
If we have posted un-vetted vids, and can use them for other things? Do we just re-tag them, or is that even possible?
@davidw - Thank you
@davidw, can you copy me on that email, I would live to chnge my nme to mtch my blog and twitter feed.
Newest video is gonna be really dramatic as it shows what I do on occassion!!!
@Tyson - where will the new John King show be shot?
@GoldenEst82 -- You can edit the story and change the tags on a story, but you can't move it into a new assignment.
If you've posted something in the past that you think might work for another assignment then let us know and we'll check it out.
Hi all: Protocol question? Yesterday, while having a group sign releases for pictures and setting them up for a group shot, I was PUSHED out of the way by one of our local TV channels. The cameramen are always great to me and even offer tips on shots, etc., but the reporters love to push. Here's the question, can we have some type of badge to wear, so they know we are Reporters as well. My camera is so small, that I think they think I'm just a tourist taking pictures.
@davidw
Thank you
Also, there is a new show on CNN International called "Earth's Frontiers."
They are interested in the eco movement. And want to hear from folks who are efficiently using energy. Whether its solar panels to generate power or rain basins to capture water.
Learn more about that here:
http://www.ireport.com/ir-topic-stories.jspa?topicId=421323
Hey @mpgomatic - John King, USA is out of Washington DC
Hello, hello! I've missed you guys!
@tyson! you just made my day with that new assignment....I started planning my earth day iReports the other night!
Hey @adriana71 - we moved some example videos in (including yours) to get the ball rolling. They definitely want specific answers to the question about President Obama. Watch the John King video ;)
@adriana71 -- Sure thing
I like MarieSager's question. Is it possible to get credentials?
@Tyson - Cool ... a quick hop on Amtrak and I'm there. My stuff might fit on Earth's Frontiers, as well. I've only posted a tiny fraction of my beat to iReport.
@MarieSager -- We don't have any official badges for iReporters. My advice to you in that situation is, regardless of whether you're wearing a badge or not, you have to use your judgment and try to get the best camera position that you can. Being safe, of course. I know that when I've gone out on shoots independently, it can be difficult to grapple with someone who has a larger camera, but you can usually find a spot between people or use a zoom lens to zero in.
@ityson - I sent in a iReport for "Earth's Frontiers" as I live and cover new sustainable energy news in Hawaii and was covering the most recent 'Wave Turbine' that was installed just off the coast. I would like to get better plugged into the "Earth's Frontiers" team to cover Hawaii and some of the things beind done here.... Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciateive
Thanks @KyleHD - you just made my dad!
Walk softly and carry a BIG camera!
Whoops - my day!
Did you guys here, it's not confirmed that Christiane Amanpour is leaving CNN? :(
@marie
Establishing relationships with the other media helps me.
My spelling appears challenged today. Sorry.
@MarieSager, I often attend events that require media passes. If possible I try to obtain one from the event organizer. Occassionaly an aggressive reporter has tried to shove me aside, either I stand my ground, not saying anything, they end up looking for foolish. Or move to a better spot.
@MarieSager -- I'm sorry to hear you got shoved around. Sadly, some people get carried away.
@mpgomatic OR a big stick. Or not. Funny, I saw Teddy Roosevelt's "big stick" at a museum this weekend. Anyway. Digression terminated.
@KyleHD, I HOPE NOT!!!
@KyleHD Yep, we just posted the story on our news blog about her move to ABC: http://on.cnn.com/d9Rqgk We'll definitely miss her!
@nsaidi - it's not a digression ... I carry big sticks, too. (No reporter wants to risk a black eye from my tripod.)
@adriana71 - Excellent advice... that is what I do also... stand your ground with out being aggressive or offensive.
@VickieMaid, yea, she's now the new anchor of "This Week" on ABC
OK gang, one more assignment to plug - and this one is BIG!
It's our Weekend Assignment and we need your help.
This Saturday we're inviting you to join CNN on a special project called "A Walk in Our Shoes."
The idea is to film a 60-second video of a favorite place to walk. It can anywhere and any time during the day.
We're really trying to get as many people from as many places in the world to join in. Then we're going to take the videos and try to make a walk around the globe!
So - please join in on the fun (I'm going to find an awesome hiking trail) - and also tell your friends from all over the world.
All the deets here:
http://www.ireport.com/ir-topic-stories.jspa?topicId=409928
@mpgomatic BIG camera, a tripod and a big camera bof. ha it keeps them from crowding in on you. ha
Have there ever been any assignments or ideas to integrate with google earth?
The walk in our shoes assignment is going to be a lot of fun. We did a test drive (walk) a few weeks ago and it was great fun.
@Katie, can you send Christana my heart felt thanks?? She is the very reason why I am trying so very hard to break into this bussiness, she was a model for me to follow. tears
@adriana71 - I shoot most of my stuff with a DVX100B. It's not monster size, but it's quite a bit larger than the consumer cameras. When the tripod is up, I have plenty of room.
@ThinkWinWin -- Not yet, we've done some experiments with Google Earth though.
@mpgomatic I have a Canon 30D, my video camera is so so Canon fs100
@saidi: Thanks, I'm pretty good at securing a spot, maintaining it is the hard part. But so happy that you can identify with what I'm trying to say. Thanks for the good advice, it's appreciated. :)
When I acquire the signature for releases I ask for permission that the photos/video can be posted on CNN. Is that correct? And I tell the person I'm interviewing that I'm an iReporter with CNN. Is that correct?
@VickieMaid I don't know her personally, but I'd suggest you leave a comment on the blog post I shared! Chances are, she might check it out.
@ChrisMorrow - Saw your iReport on the "Prince of Pot" very informative and excellent report.
I'm going to find a cute little neighborhood spot, I think. Trying to think of something fun. Atlanta ideas welcome!
@Katie, ok can I do a tribute to her like I did with Lou Dobbs???
Jumping back in for just a moment: I was thinking of filming a one minute video beginning in a subway car, walking out onto the platform, up the stairs and into the hustle and bustle of Mid-town Manhattan to show part of my commute. However, I'm bound to capture some bad language on the subway, subway platform, or on the street. What do I do in that case? Bleep it out?
@VickieMaid An iReport tribute is a great idea! It'd be really nice to see a video where you talk about how she inspired you.
Thanks @thinkwinwin
You never know what kind of stories are uncovered when visiting a city.
@Katie, ok great, not sure about a video tho' LOL!!! Ask Nicole she'll tell ya!!!
@JoyfulGypsy - put it to music instead
Anyone have any ideas or things they would like to see covered in Hawaii?
@ThinkWinWin - Thanks. I considered adding music, but it would take away so much of the real atmosphere of the environment.
@JoyfulGypsy that sounds awesome. Go for it! Hopefully you won't capture anything too vulgar :) (and yes, we can edit something out if it comes down to that)
Was nice meeting Amanpour in Haiti. I'd be down for doing an iReport about her. Will there be an assignment?
@MarieSager Yeah, stinks you had to deal with brutish behavior.
The way we'd suggest you refer to yourself is as a "CNN iReporter." I think that keeps it simple. And yes, it's very good that you ask for permission for people's stories and images to potentially be published on CNN. I guess the key is to distinguish yourself as an iReporter who posts content at CNN iReport.
Great. Thanks, Tyson. :o)
@nsaidi @MarieSager That's what I do.
Have a wonderful day all, miss being here!!!
@ThinkWinWin - I would encourage you to go out and find something you think is really interesting or that you feel passionate about and then tell the story.
alrighty, i'm heading out, have to finish this article about foursquare! hope you all have a great weekend! See you on our walk around the world! :)
@ChrisMorrow I don't think there will be an assignment about Amanpour leaving CNN. But feel free to post something if you feel up for it.
Happy walking guys! And don't forget to tell your old college roommate now living in Switzerland about it.
@everyone I'm heading out for the day. Really looking forward to seeing the walk around the world submissions on Saturday! See you all next week.
@marie
on video I ask them: you give permission to be on CNN? Especially if they are under 18 years <---- I ask the parents on camera.
Amanpour is a huge loss... I hope you guys gave her a counter offer. She understands foreign policy more than most except for Fareed Zakaria. ouch
@chrismorrow I second that.
Thanks for a great discussion. I've got to get ready for a meeting. We'll talk to you next week.
@Ewillies1961 I know that anchors change all the time in the cable outlets. But lately they've all been leaving from CNN
Caio
Ciao!
I think CNN is falling under the mantra of appeasing to Right a bit too much even when they are simply wrong by given them a platform as if their point of view of bad information deserve a platform. I think some of the older anchors have bought into the country being Center Right and if you look at the guests they lean a slight bit Right. That is Fox's territory. Unless CNN comes across as really being objective and authoritative not giving credence to the absurd (death panels), or using party nomenclature (Cornhusker kickback), cable folks will go MSNBC/CSPAN(123) for left leaners and Fox for Right Leaners. Just my humble opinion.
Ewillie do you have a problem with the freedom of speech when it doesn't validate you opinion?
the success of ireport is the fact that both sides are represented. Not having the topic window like before sucks. It's real hard to find reports you may actually want to comment on.
CNN the tv network, is going down the tubes basically because they pick a choose what to report on. A news network shouldn't appease a political machine, but the people.
WALK IN YOUR SHOES project is going to be really full of fun!
Here some questions I've asked but never got an answer to. Maybe CNN can.
If health care is so dire in America, why isn't there a national charity to help? We have the human society to care for animals in need. We have charities for most major ailments.
If Health care is so dire in America, why are we sending doctors without borders, instead of receiving them?
If health care in America is so dire, why isn't there a charity concert? Bruce Springsteen and John Cougar Melloncamp have sounded off about health care, both involved in Farm aid and Live AID. Yet, nothing?
how many people could have been helped, if all the money wasted on the health care debate, would have gone to a national charity to aid the poor with medical or even on free clinics?
Good question rasguy24.
Finally on the 126th question, a good one.
We are the most charitable nation on earth, Yet, instead of helping our brothers, we are asking the government too.
If we had a national charity for health care cost assistance, performers donated time to generate donations to such a national charity. And both sides agreed to use there resources to develop and assist such a national private charity, would we need the government interfering?
The only reason this wouldn't work, is if the whole health care bill isn't really to help the poor get medical.
Now such a charity wouldn't bail out unions who have promised benefits they can not deliver.
Hi everyone,
I am new at this and I am enjoying it.
My question is on comments.
What is the proper protocol to observe when someone comments on your posting? Do you thank them or respond? what is the proper thing to do?
Thanks,
Sidney
sidney
I reply to people who post, my response depends on their comment.
The proper protowhat?...sindey, you are a very polite little doggy and I am sure you will be welcome with open arms by the rest of the dogs. Say whatever comes to mind...no biting, growling or grumbling profanities.
Open paws..
rasguy, I don't believe in charity. I think all Americans should be protected by the government against greedy corporations who are using their power to oppress the people. Labor (real work) is very undervalued in this country and the poor and homeless are forced to live on unlivable wages. IF they are lucky enough to get a job that is not taken by an illegal alien or sent overseas for slave labor.
This is why we have the poor in America...they don't want charity, they want to be treated fairly.
Thanks, I will respond from now on.
Sidney.
homeless,
then you really don't believe in America and the founding principals.
Are the makers of the US Census Racist, or do I have a wrong understanding of the word Negro???
Hi every body, I know this is off topic, but i was feeling up my copy of the us census, and was a little bit shocked to the fact that they had put down in the race section "Black, African-American,or NEGRO". See, this is my first census and I don't know if this is suppose to be normal. However, I was a little bit disturbed and offended by the use of such word. I personally do not see the reason for adding such a description when one can easily be identified as as Black or African-American.
