I have an idea for a weekend assignment. Last week I was in the West Village here in NYC and saw this amazing house built in 1830. The owner happened to have the gates open so I asked if I could photograph it. I thought a 'historical homes and houses' would be a great theme for an assignment. especially if they're in urban areas. Of course, it would be great if we could also find out more about it's history... This one was so amazing because it's this huge wood columned house in NYC.

@Producers

Since this is an open forum today and encourage any question...

Question: I've emailed nicole a few times on this and haven't heard back. can't seem to post the link. it is the air race in rio Why wouldn't a video package like that be vetted? Does it mean the interviews aren't interesting and/or the wrong questions were asked? Thanks for your input - looking to learn here. I wanted to cover the race in NYC in June.

@ChrisMorrow -- The main reason was that it came in on a day when we had a lot of breaking news, so we didn't have a lot of time to look at more feature-y stories.

I just took a quick look at the videos just now and I don't think the pilot interviews would have been that interesting to most of our audience.

We love that you guys want feedback, and we're hard at work putting together an iReport "boot camp" of sorts so that we can better give it to you. It's impossible for us to respond to every iReport and point out what worked and what didn't, so we're hoping this will be a useful tool for you guys where you can get a bit more direct feedback and some tips from CNN experts. More details in the coming weeks! But for now, know that we hear you loud and clear and are working to give you some feedback to help fine-tune your skills!

@adriana "I just figure if it doesn't get tagged it didn't hit the right note" - bingo! we can't always put everything on CNN, usually because the topic just doesn't fit the day's news or it doesn't have a compelling angle. no iReporters should ever assume that something they've done is "bad" because we don't vet it! usually it's just because it doesn't fit into our coverage for that particular day.

Really? CNN international has a motorsport section and there were over 400,000 people on the beach watching the event. It was also on tv. Is it that CNN doesn't really have a following in Brazil? And do you think the air race won't be interesting to anyone in NYC flying over the hudson? Or what questions would you have asked to make it vettable?

Thanks again for your input.

Yeah, we let them know - but you're right - we've essentially asked the exact same thing. The thing is... the JKUSA team is really excited about carving out their own success story with CNN iReporters.

@iReport team, I'm also talking about feedback even before I upload a story. I want to know if it's worth spending hours persuing it, editing and uploading only to find out it's something no one is interested in seeing. I know that's asking a lot, but video is very time consuming and if it doesn't have a chance in hell of getting vetted, then I can move on and do something else. Does that make sense to anyone?

May 13, 2010

Spill solution. How to solve the pollution problem from the BP oil spill. SIMPLE ECONOMICS! BP should announce they will buy skimmed oil from the Gulf spill at $15.00 per gallon and then set up a task force to provide shrimpers, fishermen, and any other boat owners with capability to skim and collect oil. Potential costs for this based on 12 million gallons would be 180 million dollars. They could also by tarballs which wash up on beaches at $20 per pound.

The profit motive would produce an armada of ships to skim oil and an army of tar ball beachcombers. Total cleanup cost would be small compared to what has already been spent. The bottom line is, buy goo and people find a way to collect it.

@mcintron that's a really tough question. In general, the iReports that get vetted are the ones CNN can incorporate into our storytelling and news-gathering efforts.

And, we try our best to give you a heads up on the stories we are covering by creating the assignments. In those cases - if the iReport is on topic and follows the suggested guidelines the better the chance of getting vetted is.

But what about when you have a great story that isn't part of an assignment? Perhaps a local story that deserved national attention?

Again, there's not an easy answer. But the characteristics of a great story include (but aren't limited to) - good sound, video and editing (under 3 minutes in general for web video) - a great character to drive the story and of course, a national news peg.

Those are generalizations of course. I'd be happy to give you my thoughts on story ideas - tyson.wheatley@cnn.com - and you can always share your story ideas here at the roundtable for feedback from us and the rest of the community.

Hope that helps.

Is BP still thinking about coughing up "hair" balls to clean up the oil? I really have faith in this idea using "HAY", I know there is much more hay available than hair... And using shrimp boats to scoop it up keeps them alive.. I hope this idea gets out there..

The Army is changing for the better.  The Army will make its first institutional change by learning to manage the inevitable changes to come within its structure.  The spur in technological change mired with a burly desire to bring forth revolution in areas of culture, mode of operation and leadership in the army; have compelled the army leaders not only to embrace but also to initiate change in their operations. As the wise Gregg Easterbrook once high lightened: “The American military is now the strongest the world has ever known, both in absolute terms and relative to other nations; stronger than the Wehrmacht in 1940, stronger than the legions at the height of Roman power.”  The U.S. forces dominance in the world is not a secret, this trend is however being challenged gradually as the nations of the world strive to clinch that coveted position of international military supremacy.  As Clay Brook clearly states the U.S forces are undisputed masters of the “commons” (sea, air, and space), which allows them to project power anywhere in the world at short notice. In order for the U.S forces to maintain that position, deliberately calculated measures must be taken to assimilate new technologies in the army in order to propel their edge and sustain their dominance in the world.

Why Change in The Army is Inevitable

The size and the scope of the Americans military advantage make it impossible for any world country to mount a full-spectrum challenge to U.S. military capabilities in the foreseeable future. The military has established mechanisms to make entry barriers too high for air, sea, and space systems. The U.S. spends around $500 billion a year on its military, almost as much as the rest of the world combined. In fact, the U.S. spends more simply on the research, development, testing, and evaluation of new weapons. The research and development effort creates new technologies and modes of operation, in order for technical changes to be implemented and assimilated in the army, decisive reforms must be made.

Leadership and the hierarchy of the command in the army however, pose a massive barrier to new changes, the values and belief systems of the army are old and stringent, too inflexible to allow change to infiltrates into the force. As Shrestha, Laura elaborates, a framework has been created to explicate a systematic interplay between new interests and ideas that lie at the crux of managing the diffusion of innovations within military organizations.  The old conservative leaders have explored the nebulous technological advances being experienced in the contemporary world and have been compelled to adjust and initiate change within military hierarchies.  The army must thus be re organized, restructured and transformed to embrace the current trends in respect to external and internal pressures in order to stay at par with the world wave of revolution rocking the world. In order for change to be initiated effectively it must stem from the roots of military training Max Boot, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, cites at least three schools of thought that encompass military transformation in their seminal anthology on the future of the profession of the Army: the revolution in military affairs school; the public organizational theories school; and the civil-military relation theory school.

There are myriad external and internal drivers of change that impel all the institutions of the world to change to adopt to new advancements in their modus operandi. The military is facing a constant need to adopt to change to avoid being phased out by modern trends. Even though the army is very rigid in its structures and operations it has gradually and systematically changed to utilize smart weapons, battlefield robots, and unmanned aerial vehicles in place of large infantries to conduct future wars. This is a massive progress in the army as it helps in minimizing losses and limits the number of officers deployed to carry out an attack. In order to capitalize on technology and minimize on losses the army has got to utilize technology development its leadership structures and to embrace change in social, political, or military domains.”

Naturally, dogmatic and well structured institutions try to impel all the external forces which could alter their culture and operations. Military is such an institution, full of regulations, valuation system, autocracy and resistance to change. In the modern world however, there is no room for anybody of governance or institution to remain rigid as this poses a risk of being phased out technologically. The armed forces have eventually realized the significance of embracing change and sustaining that change in their operations.

Am I wrong? but does CNN seem like a one sided opinion?  You can't comment on the current issues.  Because they have their own opinion. but don't open it for discussion 'til after they do their piece in the news. If they weren't afraid of the truth they would let people discuss freely and allow there opinions to be aired. Rather than hiding the truth and hiding the fact that most of the people do not agree with them. What they should do is report the truth and be on the side of the general public then they would have the suport of not only the people but also the supporters would be able to follow suit.  Feed the people crap and all the feedback you get is crap.  Feed them the truth and you'll have them climbing walls to make you know you're appreciatted!

The lady CNN correspondent covering the crisis in Bangkok is not doing her job. She was asked by CNN whether there are other parts of the country outside Bangkok where the protests are being carried out. She doesn't even had a clue that one city hall on the northeast part of the country was put ablaze. I guess she better go home and let Dan do the remainder of the coverage. The BBC correspondents got more accurate stories to tell. It's a pity CNN sends someone as dumb as her to this kind of assignment.

Send the Navy Seals with plastic explosive, weight it down, use the robots to drop it into the well, explode it and like Red Adair, it is over.  BP does not want to close the well for financial reasons.

Try napalm on the surface, out in the ocean, to see if it burns the oil, a test case is not tough.

Use bales of cotton from Cotton farmers to protect the marshes.

Send the bill to BP (stands for "Biggest Polluter")

It is not the largest disaster, Love canal, Iraq,Afganistan, tobacco, DDT, etc causing the deaths of humans is the worst.

I have been trying to keep up with the Oscar Grant trial but I am finding very little reading on this. Yes I am aware of Ms. Hollaway..I,m aware of van der sloot . I am however very concerned with this young blackman being executed & it is not on anyones top story or has very little importance attached to it! The trial has already been moved, the trial has already picked a jury who i am sure will have a hard time convicting  this young killer,

simply because they have complete different experiances with law inforcement officers. They live in the same neiborhoods, attend the same churches & of course get that old pat on the back. Still I would like to be kept up with the trial as it moves out of the eye...
