Hi everyone,

Before we get started I wanted to let everyone know that Carly, our amazing inter, is going back to school so today is her last day.

She's done a great job and finished up with a great story on vinyl record fans http://www.cnn.com/2010/IREPORT/08/11/vinyl.irpt/index.html

Turns out it's national vinyl day so that was a cool coincidence.

Howdy!  :o)

One question before I have to run off.... What ever happened with the iReporters doing the triathlon?  Did they finish?  Was there any follow up on it?

Hello @OneMervOne

I use Sony Vegas to edit video packages. Though, I'm finding it difficult to edit HD. Any other program you would suggest? Any special editing tricks to make my life a little easier?

Thank you.

Oh, I have a fast computer with 8 gigs ram.

@ccostello3 - I had seen that blog, but I thought maybe the iReporters, themselves, would have had something to share about their training and experience.

Next year pick me!  :o)

@ChrisMorrow:

Vegas has always been a problematic piece of software from its inception years ago, as far back as version 3 or 4,

while im not sure where its at now, if you're still complaining it probably hasnt gotten any better.

as far as programs go, the industry standards are still Avid & Final Cut Pro, however for simple editing withouth higher end effects or tricks needed, you probably would have an easier time even going with something like iMovie.

or if you can swing it, FCP express works very well, and as a program, a small investment that just makes life so much easier.

if you're strictly a PC user, Pinnacle is a fairly inexpensive program that works well as well, though i have yet to use it for HD applications.

for HD myself im on Final Cut.

I'm want to let you all in on a little surprise. The iReport bootcamp training program is moving forward and we're expecting to launch it sometime in the next few weeks. We're lining up the experts now, so we're excited.

I think it's going to be really fun. We'll have more details as we get closer to the launch.

Thanks @OneMervOne

I will try Final Cut.

What format do you suggest? .wmv or mp4

And yes, pc all the way.

Thank you.

@davidw...is this a training bootcamp for iReporters?  I haven't heard about it.  Where will it be located?  Sounds like alot of fun!

@ChrisMorrow

as for tips; this is what i would say, at the end of the day, think mostly on the front end when you're shooting how you want to visually tell the story.

experiment with your camera shooting the same object standing in different places, not using your zooms, but moving YOUR body, you'll start to see depending on the lens how light works and how the image falls and is captured on your frame.

watch for things like backlight from a window that may mess up your shot, or if it is intentional, make sure you expose for the right amount.

the more you capture in your frame, the less you have to mess with in post.

when it actually editing, cut first with the visual narrative leading the story, use effects only as a tool to enhance or to tell the story if it makes sense, but don't add an effect for the sake of doing it, make every choice in your edit a CHOICE.

The bootcamp is going to be an online training project where you'll be able to learn some tips from some of CNN's great journalists. We haven't finalized all the details yet, so this is sort of a tease.

@ccostello3 - I'll try again next year and keep my fingers crossed.  Thanks.  :o)

I have to go now.  I hope everyone has a great day.  See you next week.  Adios.

August 12, 2010

Hmm, seems like we need a "bootcamp" for some current iReporters. lol

@ChrisMorrow

FCP is an Apple program tho...

but as for wmv or mp4, I prefer mp4 because ive noticed the compression ratios from your final HD output when you compress to mp4 is of a much higher quality, it retains more of the information and pixels and stays very close to what the original file qualities are,

and it looks crisper when it gets sent to us and we edit your stuff into the final pieces we put together here that end up featured on iReport.

the wmv format just makes it more time consuming to get it to the right place to work with.

@KCRep -- I was just looking at Wikipedia and it looks like a lot of famous people died that day, not just Elvis.

Babe Ruth, Margaret Mitchell, Robert Johnson the blues musician and Bella Lugosi to name a few. Weird

I have a question. We keep having comments deleted for one reason or another. Why can't the comments be left in place and covered? We have a viewer discretion cover for pictures. Why not the same for comments? Sometimes we lose valuable input just because someone was excessively thin skinned. It detracts from debate.

@PoliceState -- Usually the comments are deleted because they were abusive or otherwise violate our terms of use. I go through the flagged and hidden comments at least once a day and if I see something that was flagged and hidden that should not have I will make it visible again.

This doesn't happen very often.

In fact, I've noticed that users don't flag comments very often at all.

@ChrisMorrow:

there are different mics for different applications, for eg announcer mics in the radio booth, mics for capturing sound off instruments, mics for recording,

for our purposes you're looking mics that are ENG Eletronic news gathering and you dont necessarily need an expensive mic, most ENG style mics can be found for under $100 anyway.

ENG mics can be classified into either omni-directional or caroiodid.

Omni-directional handhled mics pick up sound from everywhere, while mostly directly from the person who is talking, but also picks up more of the natural sound from the environment.

Cariodid mics do a better job of only picking up sound from the person who is talking and canceling out the ambient noise.

as for wireless, if you can swing it, it would be easier for you to have a wireles handheld for run and gun situations and not be tethered to a cable, for example when you interviewed olympic athelete Maelle Ricker and didn't have the luxury to really sit down with her

and most wireless packs you can find decent quality for an affordable price without all the bells and whistles. just make sure to tape down your reciever to the camera so it doesnt fall off if you're in a rush

@everyone -- We're running short on time, so I want to give you all some homework for next week.

We want to try a new instant assignment at next week's roundtable.

What we'll do is brainstorm a little bit and come up with the assignment together and then we'll go out and do it real quick.

So start thinking of ideas. It will need to be something that we could do overnight.
