@mcintron -- We're working on a change to the whole superstar thing, but it's not quite ready yet.

I hate that it's continuing to cause people concern, but good things are coming.

@David, Rachel did do a great job. I love that she sent emails to everyone who's submitted photos. I do have one question... For the assignment, can we use photos we have in our portfolios or do we need to shoot this weekend?

@David, well, since I've had two stories vetted in the last few days, I am wondering why I lost mine? I noticed BarbRad didn't have one either and she is also working on the Economy Tracker project. It doesn't seem fair to have people actively involved in ongoing projects lose their stars.

@WasauFamily, that was my question. Because the way I read it, we are to submit the photos for this one and then it will be discussed at the first bootcamp. So it seems we ought to be able to use photos we have taken previously, tho' not used on iReport?

@mcintron The tips are already published! You can find the link on the boot camp main page: http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2010/bootcamp/

@KCRep, thanks, I got that. We are just discussing whether these need to be shot over the weekend. Here's my concern. The nature of the assignment asks that we 'tell a story using 3 photos'. Having to do that over a few days may mean we'll need to set up a story to tell, because there won't necessarily be something going on that is 'a story'. That means to me, setting up a 'phony' story so that we can tell this 'story'.

This week is a little different because we wanted to be able to answer your questions before we get started.

Normally, we'll release the next week's tips and assignments on Friday and ask you to submit your iReports by Tuesday so that our experts will have a chance to look at them before the roundtable.

September 2, 2010

@mcintron -- it doesn't have to be a NEWS story. It can be "Hungry bird gets snack from my bird feeder."

September 2, 2010

@mcintron If you already have a set of three photos that you think fits the assignment - tells a story in one wide shot, one medium, and one tight - then I think that's okay. But we're really encouraging people to take new photos so they can keep Mark's (our expert) tips in mind.

September 2, 2010

Basically this is a photo journalist type assignment, telling a story with three pictures.

@David, okay, but I still see it as a bit of stretch to capture a compelling story in a few days. :p

Sawubona.

One quick question regarding the "bootcamp" challenge before I have to go....  I noticed that the assignment guidelines is asking for "Original, unmodified ONLY."   Does that include just basic enhancing like shadow, highlights, etc.???

September 2, 2010

I hope so.. I have reporters from my area who are jealous at my % of stories that get the stamp.. It seemed easy to get the stamp before, now it seems to get tougher for every report I make.. lol

September 2, 2010

@DaElmer, well, that doesn't seem to matter anymore. I have two vetted stories in the last two days and still no star. :(

September 2, 2010

@JoyfulGypsy hey! nice to see you!

we strongly prefer totally unedited/unmodified photos, especially for this assignment, since mark (our expert) will be able to help you figure out what you can do to light your photos better as you shoot. but if you need to do some very basic color/balance correction, that's usually OK - just make sure you let us know what you did when we contact you to vet the ireport.

September 2, 2010

I rarely modify my photos at all, so that's not much of an issue but it's good to know they are looking for totally unmodified photos.

Joyfulgypsy...you of all people won't need any help with your photo's they are always perfect!!!

September 2, 2010

@mcintron - It took me MANY stories vetted before I got the star. They can't make it too easy to get it, otherwise everyone would have it..

September 2, 2010

I don't think the star has anything to do with being vetted, it has to do with views and comments.

September 2, 2010

KCRep, that is what I think too.. but you need stories vetted first before getting the star.. I don't know anyone who has a star with no stories vetted..

September 2, 2010

@DaElmer, I understand that, and I've had over 50% of my stories vetted, but it's so changeable and it's sad to be working on an ongoing assignment and lose the star. Seems unfair to me.

Howdy all, sorry I'm late!

September 2, 2010

@mcintron - That's why the stars are being replaced soon. It was a good thing when we launched in 2008, but our community has outgrown it.

September 2, 2010

Well, if it's about views and comments, then I'm never going to get one. LOL I don't have time to spend hours commenting on stories, although I do it, especially on new people to the community. And my stories don't always generate that many comments because they're not controversial. Usually. :p

September 2, 2010

One more thing...... Regarding "views and comments"...

I can understand views being one of the factors in the whole "superstar" thing.

However not so much for number of comments.  Some people spend their entire day sitting behind their computers commenting on their own iReports over and over and replying to every single comment individually which make their post seem to have a lot of comments - usually more of their own.  Should those comments by the author really count?  I mean, seriously?

September 2, 2010

I don't fret over the star's appearance and disappearance. =)

September 2, 2010

@David, great, I'm looking forward to seeing what you have in the works. :)

KCRep, yes, I think the old system encourages mindless commentary.

September 2, 2010

Really? I have yet to see one.. I wouldn't think CNN would give the star to someone who doesn't have stories vetted.. mcintron, yeah, I don't know.. We will have to see what they do to it next:)

How is Henry Hanks doing? How big is the baby???

We've always wanted to encourage commenting on the site. That's really what helped everyone get to know each other and has helped build a sense of community here.

September 2, 2010

I agree with Joy, my god did I just say that? lol jk

I see I-reporters commenting over & over on their own stories too, I can't do that.. I try to reply to all using one comment.. I couldn't comment so many times on one story.. Joy, are you back from Africa already?

September 2, 2010

Well, frankly, I don't think 'views' should be a deal breaker either. Because often, vetted iReports are used on TV yet only get a few views because they're not promoted on the main pages at dot com. So how fair is it to not give credit for those stories based on 'views' on ireport?

September 2, 2010

For instance, my video on last winters blizzard played all weekend on HLN, every half hour for two days. Yet, that story was 'viewed' on iReport by only a few hundred people if that. Shouldn't the fact it aired on TV count towards something?

September 2, 2010

....and gallery views are not counted.  So that blows that way of tracking.

Bye.  :o)

September 2, 2010

mcintron.....views are the deal breaker, that's what CNN wants otherwise why would they even have ireports?  Views get advertisement.

@KCRep, I always thought iReport was for CNN to get news from citizen reporters they could use in their news coverage, especially on TV. Because CNN is mainly a television news organization. The iReport site is a way to bring those iReporters together in one place sharing news. But I never thought the dot com was the main focus for them and still don't.

I lost the "star" for a good bit and out of no where it appeared again.

I have never liked the superstar thing and brought doing away with it at many round table meetings, as well as the (old five star voting system). uggggg What a rat race that was.

There are lot's of ireporter/s that are mainly commenters and never posted any sort of of report.
