CNN iReport roundtable: 12 Days of Christmas

Yes, it's a little early to get started planning for the holidays, but we wanted to give you a sneak peek of a creative and fun assignment we’ll be launching soon.

With the power of the CNN iReport community, we want to recreate "The 12 Days of Christmas" using a mash-up of your submissions. Starting on November 29, we'll issue a daily challenge looking for a different item in the song – lords-a-leaping or French hens, for example.

Here's a list of the items we'll be looking for: Partridge in a pear tree, turtle doves, French hens, calling birds, golden rings, geese-a-laying, swans-a-swimming, maids-a-milking, ladies dancing, lords-a-leaping, pipers piping, and drummers drumming.

Meanwhile, you can go ahead and start figuring out how to find, animate, act out or create these daily items. That's what we'll talk about today. We're looking forward to answering your questions and hearing your creative ideas.

Comments will open at 3 p.m. ET. Talk to you then!

Hi @WCNreporter. Indeed! This is always a fun time of year when we can break away from the news a bit and introduce some fun assignments on the site.

November 18, 2010

Is it Nicole? Mine too I think.........past two years I have done reports at Macarthur Mall.......they invited me again this year so ......round three!

November 18, 2010

Katie yes it is great to break away from depressing ...breaking news stories that I put on even my news site every day.....it can really depress you....so doing light hearted stories.....I think is a great idea!

Hi @jbjimbo!

So I figure folks might be straggling in, but we'll go ahead and start talking about our 12 Days assignment. From November 29 to December 14, we'll ask the community to send in photos or videos of a different item in the song each day.

Of course, it'll require a bit of creativity on your part, but we hope it will be fun!

Are you expecting folks to actually sing out or perform sections of the song or just do a take on something that refers to the song?

November 18, 2010

So take a picture of one of the items of the 12 days of christmas?

November 18, 2010

Hi @ddonar. Good question. We're hoping for people to send in videos (or animations, or photos) of the items in the song. So, for example, you could send in a video of a drummer drumming.

Then CNN will put all of the iReport submissions together to "The 12 Days of Christmas" and create a mash-up music video.

November 18, 2010

The funnier/more creative the submissions, the better the end product will be. So if you've got a friend who's willing to dress up as a French hen, go for it! ;)

November 18, 2010

Okay, so we don't necessarily need a title or audio that specifically incorporates the song, just visuals or a performance that symbolizes one of the 12 days.

November 18, 2010

LOL! This should be quite fun...........

@jbjimbo Can we expect to see you dressed as a lord-a-leaping?

November 18, 2010

If you want to make a pear tree, you can get a bunch of pears and stack them up.

I'd reference the Partridge Family, but I wouldn't be the first ...

Origami, animation, drawings, time-lapse, friends, family, lights, etc.

@jbjimbo yes good point, be careful.

November 18, 2010

So, we could use your help -- we're trying to come up with suggestions for people for some of the harder items (i.e. a partridge in a pear tree). We were thinking people could animate it ... any other ideas for what iReporters could do?

November 18, 2010

So if I got a drummer at church I play along with on Sunday service to play his drums on camera....is that what you are talking about?

November 18, 2010

@katie you know I always wanted to be a lord-a-leaping in front of an international audience. of course if I can find 9 other people to do it with me it might be better.

Can we do the 12 Pains of Christmas too? lol I love that song

November 18, 2010

@WCNreporter Yes, that's perfect! That would be really cool.

November 18, 2010

Can it be political or poke fun at commercialism?  I don't know if you even want to go near religion.  I know we love to create controversy;)

November 18, 2010

Oh, and another detail: You don't need to find 8 maids-a-milking or 12 drummers drumming, for example. You can send in video of 1 and hopefully we'll get additional maids-a-milking from other people.

Hey Katie!! Hi Nicole!!  How's everyone doing??????

November 18, 2010

@ddonar Sure, you're welcome to put your own spin on it as long as it's one of the items in the song. Some things are going to need some interpretation. (What's a "calling bird," exactly?)

November 18, 2010

Oh I see ok.........I will email the drummer I know at church and see if he would be willing to play the drums for the camera after church this sunday........

November 18, 2010

Animation is ideal for any of these and if they are short and sweet I could take a stab at all 12.

@WCNreporter Perfect! We'll officially open the assignment on November 29 and December 14 is the last day (so that's the day we'll be asking for drummers drumming), so you have some time to shoot the video.

@Rajiim Great question -- I hadn't even thought about that! I guess the videos should be really short, just long enough to flash up on the screen. Think about how the song goes and how long each item is mentioned.

I wouldn't worry as much about sounds or narration as the visuals. The big thing here is to get some great video, or create cool animations, etc. of the different items in the song.

Is there a format or standard file size that you would like uploaded?  Or if selected, you will ask for something at a higher standard?

Some of you may have already seen this, but this video is a good example of something CNN created using a bunch of user-submitted videos. It's one of our favorite things to show off to people who want to learn more about the cool things iReport can do!
November 18, 2010

@ddonar The filetype you usually use to upload to the site should be fine. I'll check with our video editor to see if he has any preference and we'll include that on the assignment if so.

You just need to collect a couple of items for your local food pantry, and snap a photo for iReport before you donate. ok, then let's do this right.  the first day of christmas is the 25th, not 12 days before.  duh!

December 10, 2010

In our secular and commercialized world many have tried to push the celebration of Christmas up into the shopping days between Thanksgiving and December 25. The twelve days of Christmas begin on the 25th and end on the eve of the Epiphany day. Epiphany is always January 6. The Church celebrates the season of Advent before the 25th and the season of Christmas in the weeks after the 25th through Epiphany. The song is not about the twelve days before Christmas Day.

I want to echo the objections of the previous two commenters: the 12 days of Christmas start December 25 and end January 5 - not the 12 days leading up to Christmas! Did no one on your staff check up on this error before plastering across your site's main page? Selling out to commercially-driven images of Christmas is a question of priority and judgment; advertising your ignorance over the Internet is just careless and stupid. Now I need to go find a picture of "12 stupids a-stupiding."

Stupid.

I had to weigh in on this one!  The 12 Days of Christmas START with Christmas day, not END with it!!!!!  My family actually went home and put our tree back up after a sermon on this at church one year.  I don't see how something this basic to Christianity could have been overlooked.  Next time, assign stories to people who actually practice what they will be preaching!
