CNN iReport roundtable: Welcome new iReporters

Please join us here in the blog at 3 p.m. ET on Thursday for our weekly roundtable discussion. We're trying something new this week.We've invited thousands of new iReporters to come so that they can get to know everyone and ask any questions they have about CNN iReport.

We called it CNN iReport orientation, but that might not be the best name for it. Orientation sounds like one of those stuffy meetings you have to go to when you get a new job, but we want it to be more like a mixer, or a new member potluck at church.

Whatever you call it, we think it will be a fun opportunity to get to meet some of the newest members of our community. CNN.com video editor Merv Teo also will be joining us to answer your video questions.

We'll open comments at 3 p.m. ET so you can ask any questions you may have about CNN iReport.

Hi everyone and welcome.

We're expecting a lot of new people today, so let me start by explaining how the roundtable works.

You can just log in as an iReporter and leave your questions or comments in the comment section below.

We'll jump in and answer as quickly as we can.

@FUADA -- We vet both photos and videos, but unfortunately, we can't vet everything that comes in.

I'm not sure why your reports haven't been vetted.

What we normally do is go through and look for stories that could either be a part of a project we're working on, or that we think that CNN can use in it's coverage.

Some days we have to focus on breaking news, and other days we get to look at other cool things.

@putaluv -- Sorry for taking so long to answer your question. This has been a really fun discussion, but I've fallen a bit behind.

There have been some cases where CNN will send a crew to follow up on an iReport, but what they would be more likely to do is add an iReport to their story.

You might notice in a CNN.com story that the reporter quotes an iReporter or does a profile that builds on what they shared.

@OrlandoPost -- I'm not sure I understand the question. Are you wanting people to send their stories to you so you can upload as OrlandoPost?

If so, we'd rather you not do that. It would be better if each person sent their stories individually, because we have to talk to the person who produced the iReport before we approve it for use on CNN.

Those submitters are free to send their stories to you as well, but we prefer for iReporters to have separate accounts.

@mcintron,

the Avid is designed for both a Windows and Mac box but Final Cut is Apple only I'm afraid.

Adobe Premiere also works for both but I'm not sure how much it costs to be honest, but I will say you'd be better off editing on software that is what the industry uses if you are able to, it just gives you more tools at your disposal

If you're on a Mac, iMovie works pretty well and it comes pre-installed.

@AladionNYC -- People have made iReport mic flags in the past, but it's important not to tell people you're with CNN.

It's also best to upload videos without special effects and music.

Special effects can be challenging, because CNN has their own fonts and graphics and sometimes they clash with what you're doing.

Music is also a challenge, because it can take a long time for us to get clearance from the artist or record label to use the music.

You want to use graphics or music, send a raw version too.

December 2, 2010
Click to view OneMervOne's profile

@mcintron,

actually industry wise, Avid and Final Cut is still the way to go, and they do make affordable versions, so if you were to ask my opinion i would lean towards that.

if you're looking to do promo videos than either Avid or Final Cut would be best, in case you ever needed to send your EDL's for others to composite your work etc.

@OrlandoPost -- It would be best if you shared the lower third info in the text of the iReport, or when you talk to the producer vetting your iReport.

The problem with fonts is that CNN puts their fonts in the lower third too, so it can look ugly when they cover each other up.

Sometimes TV producers are reluctant to use pre-fonted material if it will look bad on air.
