CNN iReport roundtable: Thursday at 3 p.m. ET

Please join us here for our weekly roundtable discussion. We've almost dug out from Atlanta's "Snowpacolypse 2011" and we're looking forward to talking with you.

We had a lot of great successes together last year like Weekend Assignment, CNN iReport boot camp, and Katrina then and now to name just a few. We also reached our goal of hearing from iReporters in every country in the world.

We're off to a great start in 2011 with the snow in 49 states challenge, and now we want to hear your ideas for some cool new projects we can try.

Comments will open at 3 p.m. ET and we'll talk with you then.

Hi and welcome to this week's roundtable. I hope everybody's doing well and has lots of great ideas.

We've also got a little surprise today. We're happy to have Merv from our video team hear for a repeat visit. He can answer your video production questions.

This might be off the wall but how about a Wordpress like feature when submitting your reports? If I want to add a link, I need to know a bit of HTML in order to do so and it would be cool if there was a button that just allowed me to highlight the text and drop in a link..could that be added? That might make it more user friendly as well.

I would love to improve the civility of iReports, however at the same time, that would mean many of the iReporters would have no one to bash and demean...from the Right or the Left. All one need do is look to some of the comments within minutes/hours of President Obama's speech last night and the blantant attacking of a certain person on the Right by many, along with those  attacking the President. I was...amazed to say the least.

Hello, Everyone. David, can I interest CNN in sponsoring a fair and balanced reporting standard for news agencies? It is my, and Dmangoman's,  newest crazy idea. I feel we get too much slant on news without due consideration for all the facts and perspectives. I hope it is OK that this has little to do with iReports.  If not, I apologize in advance. Thanks. :-)

I think that's part of it KCRep, but I also think there are a fair number of people that just like to scrap, like that old Coyote and Sheepdog cartoon.

I think they get along when they're not talking about politics.

I think the best way to deal with instigators is to ignore them and their posts.

Also, if you see a comment that you think is offensive please hit the report violation button so I will be sure to see it.

@sunethra -- The reason we don't have a delete button is that we don't want to be in a position where we're getting ready to use an iReport or to vet it so we can use it and find that it's gone.

If you make a mistake let us know and we'll take it down for you.

I have travelled to India Malaysia Singapore Thailand and Egypt and uploaded photos but I have not got a globe trotter badge, is there a specific amount of countries that one has to visit David?

January 13, 2011

The delete button would be nice, but at the same time, I think it might be abused. For example, I did an iReport last year that I did, at the time, due diligence on. Turns out after 48 hours, more information came to light. I did not delete it but..I did put in an Update comment by hitting the edit button. This way it keeps the continuity of the post.

David - I like the open forum idea; I too have been known to be passionate about my ideals, but attempt (and fail at times) to remain civil. At the same time, I have no issue with heated and strong debate, as long as it does not denegrate into baseless name calling. There are many here on iReports that I truely enjoy "talking" with, but with whom I disagree; conversely there are many here with whom I agree...but do not enjoy "talking" with. I think the forum idea would be very interesting.

you talk about ingredients of a good story - take great photos, etc...yet, sometimes, I see some funny stuff vetted and promoted...that is so not cool...sorry...I don't mean to offend no one...

January 13, 2011

I realize I'm a ghost here and am all but ignored by the staff, but I'd like to make a comment concerning david's question.

Debate, and heated debate, has been part of the foundation of iReport since I can remember, it gives it part of it's unique flavor.

Compaired to 2.5 years ago, a far better tone has developed. Changing the venue (a debate room) would change the personal contribution, like asking a writer that contributes to CNN to do it the context of a online chat room with 100 other writers.

Social media is still developing, a baby, have patience, see where it goes. At some point we need to be able to police ourseves, and for the most part most do a great job at that, eventually, my two cents.

Hi, everyone.

I can only stay for a moment but I after reading the comments, I can say that I really don't think the CNN global audience, other than other iReporters, would be interested in hearing about iReporters meeting.  Too self-serving.

What I DO think the global CNN audience would be interested in is learning about the lives of people in general from around the world - their customs, foods, struggles, successes, etc.  I would love to learn about how people live around the world and what they do to survive and get ahead- not so much about a couple of iReporters getting together for drinks or whatever.

However, getting together in a meet up would be a lot of fun and something I would love to do in NYC - I just wouldn't want to post about it.  It's personal, in my opinion.

it sounds like while you have hard disk space avail, your computer's memory might not be enough

or the conversion settings when you convert your file don't work well with movie maker.

It might also inspire other people to have meet ups in their communities.

you have a point leal, but how about meeting an ireporter and a day in a life with them, get to know their fave food, tour you around their place and other things that we don't usually see on their ireports....

@JoyfulGypsy -- I think it would say if they only want to hear from people in Mexico.

January 13, 2011

Thanks, David. I'm aware of CNN's efforts so I thought I would float the idea  for industry standards.

@Sunethra,

it sounds like you'll want to edit out the unwanted sound before converting and uploading...

@henry @david - Just shoot me an email if you hear anything, ok?

ChrisMorrow, sjunat55 and I got together in NYC and the iReports that were submitted were a waste of time.  They weren't vetted and hardly anyone saw them.  - Which was just fine by me.  ;o)

create an open section where news can be shared from around the world...in the end you decide if it worth sharing but now you miss a lot by limiting the ireports only to specific themes (us mainly)...

@WJOReiley -- We do not edit you posts after they're vetted. occasionally we might send a note asking an iReporter to make a few corrections but usually what you see is what they wrote.

David - The video at that assignment says the people selected would get 14 weeks of training in one of the best gyms in Mexico.  If someone in the US is selected will they get 14 weeks at a gym in the US?

@wjoreiley -- You retain ownership of everything you submit to CNN iReport. You're just giving us permission to use it.

You can do anything you want with that footage.

I don't have the link handy, but you can get the full legal explanation in Section 5 (i think) of our terms of use.

It's on the main ireport page.

count with me for meetups

January 13, 2011

I've found that developing a competitive atmosphere can result in some great offerings.

The assingment idea I've never liked because it does not incorporate an atmosphere of competition. Many people that have become my friends here that are often vetted think the same way in private, and have expressed the same. In fact most that I know that appear on your high ranking list have told me this.

Whatever idea comes to pass, I would redo the entire premise where it's done only in a competitive atmosphere.

This way, you'll never really see the same faces over and over again (why I always remove my own "star" rating when received) and that diversity to the larger audience would benefit CNN, iReport and the reporters themselves.

Keeping the same people exposed over and over again is not helping your cause in the long run, in my humble opinion.

David - I'll be waiting for the answer to my "Reto Balance" question.

January 13, 2011

One final thought.

The "teachers pet" atmosphere that has seemed to have developed on iReport is THE most common complaint I've read from friends here over the last 1.5 years or so. If many of the 'old timers' think this, I can only imagine what newer members think.

@thewarden - you have a good point but it will never fly...for instance I only post if I do not feel ashamed with what I am about to post...this will never make me popular...therefore just a few will see my posts...we just have to live with that...

Why not do a series of different sports or hobbies from around the world?

January 13, 2011

mugur: I've been here longer than most even some IR/CNN staff members. There is no issue about producing something that will be vetted, that's easy. But I write and produce for other services, so I now longer make that effort here.

But, in watching the development of this forum from long ago, it's more than clear that there is a very strong "teachers pet" atmosphere, and related impression of that.

This comes from the emails and communications I have on a daily basis with dozens I know here.

Point being, if many old timers think this, the newer members I could only bet would be put off by it, as I and so many others have.

Indeed, this is the main reason I no longer produce anything on a level that would be vetted here any longer.

Just an observation

Are there any ireporters in Hawaii that would be interested in a meetup?

January 13, 2011

I understand I consistantly bring up issues that are uncomfortable for the IR staff, and am consistantly critical, but I don't know if that's really a bad thing.
