@ChrisMorrow,

i'd defintiely recommend getting some kind of protective cover/housing for the camera so the snow doesnt melt and get into the electronics,

Porta brace makes some i believe, you'd have to look.

other things to remember, your batteries wont last as long so bring spares,

and always check your ISO settings which should be easier since you're on a DSLR with changing light conditions in the cold and snow.

wear gloves that don't restrict your manuverability too much with your fingers so u can get the shots you need, get one of those anti glare films for the LCD screen,

thats all i can think off of the top of my head, did u have anything specific?

I'm worried about the condensation on the camera - outdoors to indoors. How do I prevent that or should I not worry about it? Wondering if a cheap Flip is the way to go.

Thank you!

Given that many devices today, cell phones, flip cams etc. have a fixed field of view. If you shoot a scene that you cant get close to. Is it better for the shooter to send the video in to ireport in it's raw form or is it helpful to use some form if zoom effect in the editor to "zoom" in on the important part of the scene?

Hi henry, dsashin, chris, leal and kevin.

onemerveone, i wanted to ask about my ireport about the cockatoo conservation. I got 2 hours of materials and i trim it to 10 mins removing my interviews to the poachers. This is my ireport - /docs/DOC-568751#

Thanks

@kevinp

you should always send the highest quality possible to us RAW, and we can work with the video from our end, if you add an effect to it, if we need to tweak anything, we'd have to call you to send in the video again

Hi @Sherbien -

Excellent video! However, I would trim it even further to under 5 minutes (preferably closer to 3). I know it's difficult to do, but it will turn out best that way in the end. Also I would add more "b-roll" while your various subjects are speaking. Thanks so much for your question!

March 10, 2011
Click to view OneMervOne's profile

@ChrisMorrow,

main thing about shooting in the cold is to keep the camera dry, and with a DSLR, don't stay outside too long, you may have to make repeated trips in and out to raise the camera's temperature,

the condensation on the lens you'll just have to use a lens cloth to clean it.

if you get some kind of protective cover for the housing, it will minimize the risk of the condensation seeping into the camera's internal parts, be very careful or you end up with a really expensive paper weight.

Thanks henry. I'll try to re-edit it later and add b-rolls.  I also forgot to include the photos i got with permission.

is it okay to have the shaky b-roll because when I'm only allowed to go to the roosting site 200 meters away and we're in the middle of the sea. The waves are too strong.

Thanks.

@sherbien,

you're going to get what you're gonna get when it comes to shooting in that situation, at the end of the day, if its good video, and its a bit shaky, its ok,

whats more important is you show the subject matter you're talking about visually.

what matters at the end of the day is the story as a whole. and good b-roll always adds to the story.

@larena,

in general i'd say vary your background choice of where you shoot,

and experiment with the tilt if you're using your computer's webcam and vary the distance from the camera which you are sitting, and your framing would produce a cleaner image, with just a bit of headroom and it looks more like you're looking at the camera

March 10, 2011
Click to view nsaidi's profile

@sbeasla Just chiming in, David is absolutely correct about the Gowalla highlights.

When you check in at a place on Gowalla, you have an option of adding a "highlight" which is sort of like adding an additional piece of data or categorization to it. Like a tag, almost. In this case, we're talking about adding a "CNN iReport" highlight when you check in. Just scroll down and it's at the bottom of the first page in the list of possible highlights (they're ordered alphabetically).

Hope that helps!

March 10, 2011
Click to view nsaidi's profile

Oh, P.S. We strongly encourage you to take pictures along with those check-ins. If you attach a picture AND an iReport highlight, your photo can go into the iReport Gowalla account, and then it's on CNN iReport.

and that brings to mind another question I had. Are there any plans in the future to be able to integrate live video streaming from mobile devices into the ireporter system? for breaking news events?  On a vetted basis of course. But have the ability for, say, the CNN app on the iphone to be able to stream live video?

I promise this will be my last "suggestion / idea" about the streaming video thing. I'm just very excited about the possibilities. Images a national "volunteer style live stringer" network.. Ireporters with mobile devices across the world that could be emailed or contacted and requested to "start streaming" from wherever breaking news occurs! Millions of people with live "sat trucks" in their pockets! =)   OK I'll stop now!!

Why doesn't CNN have a commentator or politician who was an adult in 1986 without a convenient loss of or lack of memory? Comparing the current bombing in Libya with those on Iraq is like comparing apples and oranges. A more accurate comparaison of Obama's UN sanctioned action would be with that of Reagan's 1986 ordered bombing of Libya, which though not UN sanctioned, was not criticized by members of Congress, though most of the world and NATO were against Reagan's Operation El Dorado Canyon  incursion.
