Debate rages in aftermath of bin Laden’s death

As you can see in Greg Reese's video above, there's been no shortage of varying opinions out there over the past week. iReporters have had a lot to say on many aspects of the death of Osama bin Laden, and what it means for the future.

The newest debate that has been stirred up on CNN iReport, is this past weekend's decision by the Pentagon to release five mostly unflattering videos of bin Laden, confiscated from his compound in Pakistan after the raid which killed him.

"At the face of what Osama Bin Laden has been able to pull off in his holy war, I say this whole attempt to minimize Osama's mystique is laughable," said Jimmy Deol from Toronto. "If anything, it might encourage an average Joe with similar aspirations somewhere in the world to take solace in the fact that an average person can accomplish all that evil."

Veteran political iReporter Egberto Willies from Kingwood, Texas responded to one of Deol's points, saying that bin Laden himself did not change the world, but that he only provided a rationale for war.

Omekongo Dibinga from Washington questioned the decision to release the videos at all: "Had I lost a family member during 911, I would not want to see this over a week after Bin Laden was killed. I've seen Bin Laden on TV more now than I ever have, including directly after 911. We should not be giving him more life after his death."

Another aspect of the bin Laden story that drew controversy was his burial at sea. Jason Dinant of Las Vegas asked if bin Laden deserved to be captured and tried instead of killed (warning: video contains strong language).

Adding to the debate, Hao Li from Los Angeles said, "While I am glad that Osama Bin Laden is dead, I also don't think this is the end of terrorism or the Al Qaeda terrorist network. If anything, I don't think terrorism could ever be defeated."

We invite you to join the debate on CNN iReport. What does bin Laden's death mean for efforts to prevent terrorism, and the future of U.S. military operations overseas? Share your view here.

I am sorry, but for me, the more I see now the more like a hoax this bin laden thing is. bin Laden was visited in 2002 in Yemen by the head of the CIA when he was in the hospital. Look at the video it is obvious it is staged and made to be political. Watching Obama with the finance people. As long as corpratism is ruling our government we will never know what we can believe.  I was an Obama believer but he sold out to the same old corporate America. RON PAUL 2012

Let's face it, it took an Obama to get rid of Osama. If it hadn't bin Laden, it might have bin Biden.

Now there's something to think about . . .

My thoughts on the issue are spartan. First, OBL was taken out with extreme prejudice, the body handled in accordance with Muslim beliefs, thus anything released stands to incite the radicals. It's not about appeasement, it's that there's nothing positive to be gained by appealing to the curious. God bless the US Armed Forces~

They raise more questions than they answer.  They seem fake to me and the whole thing is unsettling as I voted for Obama.  I just think the" burial at sea", failure to release photos of the corpse and these lame videos just make thinking people doubt the truth has been told.

Obviously, they can't allow him to look good either!

The official story of how Bin Laden died is phony. We have zero photos, zero body, zero evidence...we must take the US gov't word he died in that compound and must believe that is his wife, that DNA was accurately taken within 12 hrs before they dumped him. We will never know who killed him as SEAL TEAM 6 will never be publicly acknowledged. The other guys killed in that compound didn't get shot in the face, why Bin Laden? These videos could have been filmed any time anyplace...he is wearing the same stuff as the 2007 video and same dyed black beard....it does indeed look to be him, why scrub audio? SO that we can not place the context in which the videos were made. And I agree, 9/11 was allowed to happen, and I believe our CIA and the Pakistani ISI were involved. Donald Rumsfeld on mancow muller show two months ago live on air claims he has never heard of the destruction of world trade center 7?!? Come on. That with lies about WMDs and now this b.s. fiasco...cover up, lies....when will our gov't be honest with us?!? I am terrified new domestic attacks will be coming, not at the hand of "terrorists" but at the hands of our hidden government. Please stop. please end the wars.

Why does CNN engage in debate about things like this? It is inane. Last week the question was "is the killing legal?" Now this. It is basic. A terrorist mass murderer killed thousands. We raided a compound and shot him dead. Great kill. End of story. The videos don't show anything except that Al Queda was still being puppeted by him and he had to work on delivery. Just like Obama uses a teleprompter. Move along CNN.

Bin Laden is dead, whether by the official story or not.  Now begins new mysterious threats from unknown "terrorists".  oBamUSH.  The government was patting themselves on the back that they got the 'terrorists handbook'... but in reality, the US had thought of more ways that terrorists could strike than the "terrorists" ever thought up.  Give it a month and I'll bet we'll see a new terror alert system (color coded?).

Its all lies. The biggest terrorist in world history and they dump his body at sea, instead of torturing him a bit? We are all for torture now, aren't we?

Mr Bin Bernanke has stolen 28 trillion from the taxpayers of this great country and blocked Congress for over two years of where the money went.

Then a month ago, wikileaks comes out and says if Bin Laden dies, there are 160 nukes buried under federal buildings all around the US, and boom he dies. The USG sells us fear, and most Americans buy into it and demand more. You think three buildings blowing up was bad?, wait until a nuke goes off.

Do the videos hurt or help? That definitely depends on where you stand. I'd say the videos hurt Al Quaida a lot and help the US. Instead of looking like a confident, strong, active man, he looks more like "Ahkmed - the Dead Terrorist." I also read an article about how his theology is so agaisnt mainstream Islam. Somoen should make a really big deal out of that and broadcast it worldwide to show all the terrorists, and potential terrorists, just how flawed their ideas are. These videos, if used wisely, could really help smash Al Quaida, and maybe defuse other terrorist groups.

Nuisance0207, no one told me what to believe or gave me a memo. I am actually the one thinking for myself because I can read Popular Mechanics, who debunked EVERY 9/11 Truther theory. I can do research on almost anything. I have an advanced degree which aided me in critical thinking. People like you take every instance and turn it into a conspiracy because you have no life. If a completely unconnected source tells you you are wrong then your response is that the gov't got to them and told them what to put. You spin and spin and spin where nothing will ever be right in your world. This is black and white. Bad man kills thousands. We kill bad man. End of story. Go look for the bogeyman now.

Karl Rove said that guys like me were ''in what we call the reality-based community,'' which he defined as people who ''believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.'' I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. ''That's not the way the world really works anymore,'' he continued. ''We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality -- judiciously, as you will -- we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.''

Hmmmmmm, Popular mechanics? Who aare their sponsors? I bet most of them are companies for the military industrial complex.

Supporters of the conspiracy theories have claimed that 9/11: Debunking The Myths is "a propaganda piece" written by "a senior government official's cousin" because Chertoff has the same last name as Department of Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff. However, Chertoff has repeatedly denied this claim, most notably in the September 11, 2006 issue of U.S. News & World Report, stating "no one in my family has ever met anyone related to Michael Chertoff".[4] In an audio interview, he noted that any possible relationship would likely only be found in "19th-century Belarus", and that his mother has described any such possible relationship as "distant".[5] However, when phoned at her home in Pelham, NY, and asked whether or not her son Benjamin was related to Homeland Security Secretary, Michael Chertoff, Judy Chertoff replied, "Yes, of course, he is a cousin."

Wow, look at all these people waking up to reality. I can only hope there will not be NFL this year so more and more people will wake up.

In 1871 Albert Pike envisioned three Word Wars to be followed by an unparalleled economic disaster.   Pike's plans have come to fruition, shockingly 'on target'.  Who is Pike and perhaps more importantly who backed Pike?

You really think that 9/11 was orchestrated by the Government?

Well, let me as you this, how many people would it take to cover it up? Well, you have the whole White House, You would have a few congress-people, which would make it necessary for all of congress to be in on it. This is hundreds of people. And do you really think this would not have been leaked by someone eventually/be put on wikileaks? If the wikileaks people got a hold of this it would probably be on the front page of the site.

If you are not able to realize this I cannot debate this with you because you obviously have a strewed sense of logic.

Please note that the U.S. government has NOT released those gruesome photos - PAKISTAN did.  The dead people in the photos could be ANYONE AT ALL.  Those of you paranoid enough to think the Obama administration has reason to want to pull wool over your eyes had better wise up to the fact that Pakistan is renowned for such things.  There is no proof that OBL was killed differently than was told to us, or that his body was handled in any manner other than what they said.  And it's outrageous to think Obama wants to form the basis for starting a war.  He's the one who has been ENDING Bush's wars.

It is only those who say that "photos and videos can be faked" who think such a statement proves that they WERE.  The U.S. released videos taken at his home.  If they can be faked, why do people WANT to accept the validity of PAKISTAN's gruesome photos?  Don't the same standards for generating suspicion apply to all?  Or does partisanship dictate who is truthful and who is lying?

Of course, there's a lot of American hate (racism particularly) and right-wing partisanship involved here; by now, we ought to know how to ignore such people.

The Muslims are screeching again.  Such dainty, delicate sensitivities they have - except that they have NONE of such things for US.

Burial at sea - happens.  Even to Muslims.  If Muslims are at sea and one of them dies, do you really think they'd preserve the corpse for a few months till they can get back to land and "bury it properly, with proper rituals"?  I think Muslim corpses stink just as fast, and just as bad, as ours do.  Don't quote me on that, tho.

They just want US to think that burying a Muslim body at sea is somehow not permitted in Islam.  So they can make a stink about it.

As usual, they lie.  They're mad because they didn't get a corpse to worship, and because they WANT to make a stink about anything they possibly can concerning OBL's death.  Tough rocks, guys.

And quite frankly, where OBL is concerned, why should WE care two potatoes whether he gets a proper Islamic burial or not?  He sure didn't care one bit about OUR people who died in his multitude of attacks.  He cared nothing if Muslims desecrated the corpses of OUR people they'd killed, like dragging them thru the streets.  Yet his body wasn't exploited or publicized, and wasn't deliberately desecrated, which is far more than he deserved.

By WHOSE measure does HE deserve a more respectful treatment of his corpse than WE deserved when it was HE - and his worshipful followers - who had OUR peoples' corpses?  He got it, though.

Tell those screeching Muslims where to stuff it.  Their hero got better treatment for his corpse than any of them would give to ours.  It wasn't abused.  It was buried at sea, and even Muslims have to have rituals for doing that.  The choice to bury at sea is fairly clear, too.

They didn't want there to be a grave where people could make a shrine for worshipful pilgrimage.  Anyone who worshiped that turd doesn't deserve such shrines.

If the world's Muslims don't like it, they can lump it.  Their wishes and desires are not the only ones in this world that COUNT - though to watch and listen to them, it's clear that they DO think that way.  Nothing will ever teach them that OUR wishes and desires - even our NEEDS (such as continuing to breathe) - count for anything at all.  They think THEY are the master race, the ones their sadistic god wants to be dominant in the whole world. What they think, though, doesn't make it so.

If the family of OBL wants proof, we can show THEM the photos, the DNA evidence, and other evidence picked up at that mansion of his, that proves he's gone.  If that isn't enough for them, too bad.  We don't owe them anything more.  If they say the proof isn't enough, too bad.

Go ahead, label me an Islamophobe if it pleases you.  I have studied this "faith" since 1994, and know more about it than many Muslims do.  So my negative opinion of Islam is NO prejudice; it is a STUDIED OPINION.  Those who think Islam is tolerant, peaceful, moderate, etc. are the people who ARE prejudiced - in its favor, and without any facts.  The statements given them by Muslims will ALWAYS be lies, and they ought to know that by now.  Their opinions aren't opinions at ALL - they're attitudes, because none of you has done a genuine STUDY to get the facts of Islam.  You just listen to governments and media, ask questions of a few lying Muslims - all of those being second-hand, and biased sources - and you then accept the warm-fuzzy attitudes.  Meanwhile, Muslims are already actively taking over the world, and your eyes are SHUT.  Which is precisely how the Muslims of the world want you to be.

Denying a visible threat to our lives and countries is anti-survival.  Be that way, if it suits you.  Otherwise get busy and STUDY Islam's own texts for the realities.  If you have the courage to face them, that is.

Ahh, Topher?  Despite any advanced degrees you may have, and despite what you read in Popular Mechanics (?), you show a vast ignorance when you say that it "debunked every 9/11 truther theory."  You see, there's a little matter of the Laws of Thermodynamics.  Your comments basting your ego about your "critical thinking" are a bit inane, since you promptly prove that you don't know what critical thinking even IS, and rely on pulps like Popular Mechanics to tell you about science.  As for me, I prefer opinions from the professionals - metallurgists, physicists, architects, etc.  In Europe, THEIR demolition people have stated flatly that the towers were brought down by pros in their own field.  Yet you think Popular Mechanics has greater authority?  Dohh.

Do you know anything about these laws of physics?  Maybe you still need some lessons on critical thinking.  You assume anyone who disagrees with you has "no life."  That's not exactly good critical thought, pal.

Methinks YOU have bought into a bit of "spin" from the mags you read.

Please take careful NOTE:  The Laws of Thermodynamics apply, universally, throughout the cosmos.  They are NOT variable or changeable.  Not even by Bush/Cheney.  Got it?

Now when it is said that airplanes "vaporized" and gargantuan steel girders "melted," it's a flat LIE.  A temperature capable of doing that would have to be at least 2000 F. higher than anything jet fuel can provide.  Just HOW did they spin things to get you to believe otherwise?  Did the Laws of Thermodynamics just go "on hold" that day?

The greatest likelihood is that Bush knew of the attack and let it happen.  But he planned ways to AUGMENT it after the first terrorists hit one of the towers.  He had another plane ready, and missles for the Pentagon and Pennsylvania.

No airplane hit Pentagon or that field.  There'd be wreckage galore, and the hole in the Pentagon would have to be bigger than the 16-19 feet diameter, and couldn't possibly be circular, which it was.  The wings and engines didn't just go poof before striking, or do you think they did?

We don't need "spin" to know that much of 9/11 WAS an inside job.  It couldn't have been anything else.  What we do NOT have is proof of who the perps were, and without that, just knowing our government did most of it isn't enough.  It is known what was done, and known that people in our government planned and executed it, but proof as to WHO did WHAT isn't available - hence, no trials can be held.

I'm a liberal.  Liberals are SUPPOSED to respect education and knowledge, and to accept REALITIES, however ugly.  I doggedly resisted having to accept these horrific and ugly realities, but the evidence of my own eyes - not to mention of science - made it impossible to ignore them.  I didn't WANT to think my own govt - even BUSH - would consider doing such a thing, for any reason.  I had no choice but to accept the fact that they surely did.  Not wanting to believe it isn't reason enough to do so in spite of clear evidence.  Unless you want to hide in fear, or cover up an agenda.

Which is what most Americans prefer to do, rather than to face such ugly realities.  One day, it'll surely cost us.

Like it or not, MOST of 9/11 was, uh, "your tax dollars at work"??

This is a place for reporting stuff.  Well I want to report that I have been "gagged" by some kind of hacker on CNN's SoundOff boards - all of them.

It's simple.  Instead of genuine text fields for comments and replies, an overlay that looks just like them keeps me from commenting.  The overlays will not accept a cursor.

Since this is the SECOND time this has happened, I'd like to know if someone can tell me how to track this hack/malware down and get rid of it.  Last time I had to format C:.  Somebody obviously doesn't like what I say, and has effectively cut me off.

I've written CNN, but they didn't help last time.  Still, I don't think they, or disqus and other providers are doing this to me.  It's a private person, a hacker, who very likely has access to CNN, disqus, etc., maybe as an  employee.  This is an attack targeted at me by someone who really DOES think I have no right to free speech.

I use this same login name on SoundOff.  Please reply to this posting if you have any good ideas.  I have no doubt they'll do this again, too.  It's already gummed me up twice.  And thanks for any help.

Bin Laden became the straw man for much of what ails the U.S. His being able to evade much of what passes for "intelligence" for such a long time has made him a legend. A few years ago it was reported that bin he had a double who would take his hits, and one has to wonder whether the reported bin Laden death actually involved bin Laden. The U.S.-reported bit about DNA comparisons, etc. are suspicious because those generally take far longer than the reported time frame between the death and the disposal of the body. The al-Qaeda confirmation of bin Laden's death may have been done to take the heat off of the real bin Laden if in fact he was not killed. The entire story appears to be something out of a spy novel with numerous plot devices which have not been resolved.
