Hi GHung,

Welcome everyone. Let me start by introducing @onemerv1. He's a producer on our video team and puts together a lot of the iReport interview questions.

If you've got any questions about video production, he's your guy.

We've got a lot of stuff going on this week. I want to show you all the open story that we've put together on the Midwest, South flooding.

We're really excited about how CNN producers in the field and iReporters are telling this huge story together.

We've also launched some new assignments this week to go along with all of the hard news.

One thing we're doing that's could be fun is encouraging people to share their favorite lines from Top Gun.

The movie was released 25 years ago and our friends in Hong Kong are pretty excited: http://ireport.cnn.com/ir-topic-stories.jspa?topicId=606333

Hi, everyone.

What's up with "Travel Snapshots" section lately?  Assignments only stay open a couple of days, close without warning and then the closed assignment (destination) lingers on the assignment page, as if open, for days after it's already closed. It's confusing and inconvenient.

I've got a question for y'all that's a little bit out of the blue. We were bouncing the idea around for an iReport book club and just wanted to see what y'all thought about that.

Is it something you would like to do? Does anybody have time to read over the summer?

What sort of books would you want to read.

I can't stay, so I'll check back later.

Including a deadline for posting to destinations in the Travel Snapshots section would be very helpful.

Ciao for now.  :o)

@davidw - I was going to suggest that today! We have "what are you watching" and "iReport at the movies" but we don't have anything for books and that would be awesome!

@Joyful, we've passed along your concerns to the Travel folks, and they're doing their best to make things more consistent. For now, the topic changes Monday-Tuesday and the gallery comes out Saturday. So you can assume that no more submissions for that assignment will be vetted after that.

@davidw

I think the book club is a great idea. Problem would be what kind of book since the interests here are vast. Maybe each iReporter pick a book  of their chosing and make an iReport of a certain format as to why it is a good or bad read. Some book winner could emerge if other iReporters then decide to read the books and report on it. Just a thought.

May 12, 2011

Hi all!

May 12, 2011

Picking a book would be tough. I'm thinking we'd want to go with something kind of light. Ideally not by Nicholas Sparks (but that's just me).

@ireporttwo

I have about 6 books on my Nook unread (by either 10 to 80%) :)

May 12, 2011

Hi ireporttwo.

The iPhone doesn't have a zoom. The best way to get a close up is to physically move closer to what you're shooting.

May 12, 2011

I am definitely going to read about Space Travel To Mars and Space Explorers.

May 12, 2011

David I found out that it has the zoom feature on the camera for just taking pictures not videos.  Select HDR and tap your phone twice in the middle a bar will come across that let's you zoom in close.

May 12, 2011

I didn't find it out myself but another ireporter gave me that good info.

May 12, 2011

@ireporttwo

The other thing to think about that you'll have to balance with getting closer to your subject when taking video is the camera/lens' natural minimum distance it requires for decent focus.

every lens has a minimum distance it requires for the subject to stay in focus, move too close in and you'll never get a clear crisp picture, so that's something to keep in mind when shooting in general, not just with the iphone

May 12, 2011

Ewillie, I haven't got a nook yet. I think I might like the kimble better. But I love turning pages for some reason.

May 12, 2011

I don't know why the zoom doesn't work in video, but I'm guessing it's because it would be really shaky.

Merv could tell you more, but zooming in with a video camera really amplifies ever little shake or jiggle.

May 12, 2011

Thanks OneMerveone!

May 12, 2011

Let me know what it looks like Ewille

May 12, 2011

yes what david said is correct,

depending on what each specific camera is designed to do, on lower end cameras zooming in does cause a trail effect that jiggles, just depends on what the camera is designed to do.

the iphone has a great camera for quality in terms of being combined as part od a pda, but it is still designed to take great video in one-off situations assuming certain conditions, good light, etc.

its native video codec is designed for as good as you can get for a web based lower compression format.

May 12, 2011

So long since I had a story vetted, had to make sure I was still an I-Reporter.. lol

May 12, 2011

Learning that so many people are still in need of help.. I might have the largest group of people, but from 1,000 miles away it is almost impossible to do anything more. I have posted a few I-Reports about the group but it must not be interesting enough to vet.

It sucks that because I am an I-Reporter, may of my reports concerning my groups don't get looked at. I understand why, just wish it got more attention.. Will keep on trying though:)

We appreciate the updates, but it's really not something we could use on CNN. One thing you good do, that would help spread the word would be to encourage members of your group that live in the area, to share their experiences on iReport.

We definitely want to hear what people in that part of the country are going through.

I want my failed processing reports removed. There is no point in having them there. I have a bunch because although I have submitted movie files that are wmv . they never go through and post . Windows live movie on a Toshiba laptop that is new is what I am using. It posts pix with ireport without any difficulty. So I am using an old computer at times to post a movie when I can.

Folks, I'm trying to get a sense of the feelings out there post bin Laden's death. Needless to say, the vitriol STILL continues in some circles against the President, and there are also loud rumblings about the role played by enhanced interrogation techniques in general, and waterboarding in particular.

I'd love to hear your overall thoughts....I truly appreciate ALL opinions, so don't be shy!!

Hurtful:

I'm a historian by training and profession. There have only been a few times in my life when the shock of an event has numbed me to its importance in the moment -- so to speak. I was doing some work online that night when I got an e-mail news alert that President Obama had announced the operation that resulted in Bin Laden's death. I kept right on working, thinking "that'll be big news in the morning" -- the same way thatyou thinkyou have to wait to tell people about things they missed after the late local news goes off. The "bigness" of what had happened didn't start to hit me for a good 30 minutes or so. Then I was up most of the rest of the night wayching the coverage on TV.
