CNN iReport roundtable: Thursdays at 3 p.m. ET

Please join us here at 3 p.m. ET for our weekly roundtable discussion. We'll be talking about our cultural census project, which is a series of challenges designed to help us learn more about the people who live in the United States. It's also an opportunity for you to learn more about your friends in the CNN iReport community.

We're also happy to answer any questions you may have about what's going on in the community.

We'll open comments at 3 p.m. ET and begin the conversation. In the meantime, fill out this quick survey to get a head start on the cultural census.

Awesome! Great request regards politics! Politics are a difficult subject David. I would enjoy a segment for ireporters on how to do real commentary about that.

Oh, yeah,. That's what we need. More political rhetoric. Come join the Obama slammers. Or, become an Obama acolyte.  We're running short on both. :-)

Hi PoliceState, it would be nice to have folks be able to disagree without being disagreeable. It would certainly make the next year and a half a lot more pleasant for me.

Mary Matlin and James Carville manage to get along, we should be able to as well. We don't even have to live together.

I live in iowa and last night we had tornado warning in the town my gf works and at her place of employment they told her they do NOT take cover unless the tornado is on top of them! Are businesses worried about making money over saftey and leaving people in harms way y there is so many tornado deaths this year???

I have many fans who are Democratic, Republican, Libertarian, and Tea Party. I would enjoy guidance on how to talk about the larger issue as an American.

So the guidance would include tips and pointers on how to:

1 Avoid inflammatory language

2 Stay focused on the positive in terms of tone and wording

3 How to stay out of larger arguments that include rhetoric

4 Traditional journalistic practices for taking everyone's side into account

DavidW...

The Post Office is struggling. But not because of any of the normal things like inefficiency or unions or bloated burecracy.

it's actually all due to a Congressional mandate that makes USPS pay for retiree health benefits IN ADVANCE. No one else has to do it. 14 percent of its' current revenue has to go to this "tax".

If the PO were left alone without this, it would be breaking even.   Despite all the electronic stuff, they still do something like 500 million pieces a day. Sure, it will diminish, but not over night. I havent seen a really good report that discusses this.

David. Reading the stream. I don't see how this isn't talking about subjects. Politics are hard. I will approach the subject with guidance from real journalists. I really resound with what you are saying about being agreeable. Walter Cronkite was a voice for all people. He was a Journalist. If iReporters are going to gain credibility we have to abide by the rules.

For instance, bloggers have a few problems I can foresee:

1 Vetting, fact finding, confirmation ~ Is it possible to have some of the people you are talking to give advice on how to keep projects in opinion-editorial to avoid rumor and false facts?

2 The Federal Trade Commission limits the way an internet story can be mentioned or reported. If it benefits my company or someone I work with online the information is an implied or sponsored message. If you can ask the people you talk to about how to walk this line I would be grateful.

The new buildings in the tornado hit areas will likely have new tornado shelters as well. Unfortunately people have to learn the hard way. But I know I ask myself the same question and run the kids through a drill to ask them the best place to go in case of a tornado. This I do repeatedly.

Regarding my current reporting:

I am doing most of my ireports as op-ed.

Right now I am pretty focused on Japan and the tragedy there. I am teaching fans and friends to help by showing interest in the stories online. The way I say it is, "Click the change you want to see in the world."

I look for new news via twitter and online blogs and release them to my fans and friends.

The main thing I am focusing on in my content is the use of manners to keep discussions open and ongoing.

Hi irmarobinson

We do want to talk about the cultural census, which is part of CNN's coverage on the U.S. Census.

We're asking people to fill out a short survey and then participate in a series of challenges:

1) Take a self-portrait

2) Show us a photo of your dinner

3) Read a short passage

4) Show us your handwriting

5)Show us how you get around

May 26, 2011

@davidw, things get dynamic and really interesting and we are not sure if some people just get nasty between us and abuse the Report Abuse switch. If a CNN moderator cut people off it would be easier to deal with. But I think we are not certain that the Libyan Gov is spamming the abuse button to sway the odds. The only comments left on the board sometimes are only those who bash the US and NATO so we don't think a live moderator is handling it.

Katie. I have a story that still gives me chills. I know a press photographer that was one of the few that ran towards the blast when it happened. I will reach out with that. Too many people remember the tragedy without remembering how amazing some people were when that happened ~ stefan

iDavid, in regards to the politic discussion, I do have a question.  I recall a movie, brewster's millions, where the idea was to vote for "none of the above". My question, would it be too far fetched to add this to the election ballots as a valid vote, and what would happen if that voter tally for it, was higher than those cast for the candidates.

@metacouture  I was thinking that the Japanese can construct a new kind of Tusnami barrier. Since running inland may not always be possible in a Tsunami, it makes sense that a walk up tower is available to people near the coast. Like a passive diamond shaped mound with stairs that go above a certain height. I was thinking instead of disposing of the rubble, it can be used in part as fill for a large number of walk up diamonds lining the coast like a passive rescue system. The diamonds would pass water not block it, but the water would simply pass by. People will have to go back to the coast to work and there will still be little protection.

Frank works with many children at Vanderbilt and has changed their lives plus adults with the same type of achilles issues.  If anyone can help Frank get to the right person for helping Tiger contact him at 615-955-0594 A Step Ahead O & P.THANK YOU!!!!

David. I just posted the story ideas and requests to my twitter account for fans and friends. Any tweets posted during the roundtable will have more traction on the Internet.

Possible suggestion:

1 A row of links of stories requested by you on this page, to the right of this blog, will allow people to peruse what is current and pertains directly to them.

2 Then a "Share to Twitter or Facebook link" will get more visibility to iReport as well as giving iReporters a chance to make an immediate difference in the areas of the news that resound for them personally (therefore to their friends and fans).

@MO86US The Rebels will not likely accept any ceasefire as long as Gaddafi is not behind bars. So it looks like a no go. I saw a write up that the Libyan Gov was trying perhaps to sidestep Gaddafi, but we nee to see what is what. As for Syria, they appear to have similar problems and the Gov uses similar smear tactics on it's people to discredit them. There appears to be a muddle of confusion surrounding fanatical devotion to Islam.

@rebelleader Your jettitsunami break wall idea has scientific grounds. daVinci designed diamond shapes around castles to prevent cannon fire from breaching the wall. An iReport with a local architect seems like it would work as enough factual basis to get your idea into the mainstream as opinion-editorial; you'd have to check with David.

Your ideas are sublime, and show a deep caring. Again. Bravo for That!
