iReport's coverage of Occupy Wall Street protests

The leaderless movement, modeled after social-media-driven demonstrations in the Middle East, began on September 17, when hundreds of people descended on the streets of Lower Manhattan's financial district.

See photos from day one.

Now in its third week, the Occupy Wall Street protests have congregated hundreds of round-the-clock protesters, who have made Liberty Plaza their temporary home. Meanwhile, the number of demonstrators at weekend protests and marches has grown into the thousands, such as at this past Saturday's march on Brooklyn Bridge where hundreds were arrested.

Arthur Kohl-Riggs, 23, who joined the Occupy Wall Street protests 1,000 miles away from his hometown of Madison, Wisconsin, sent us this video of the march:

To date, we've received almost 100 submissions to our assignment, but the iReports aren't just from New York City. We've received photos and videos from Washington, Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago among others. Similar protests are cropping up all over the United States and at iReport we're gearing up to hear from all of them. Just yesterday we set up an Open Story, a collaborative visualization of the protests occurring all over the U.S. map.

Explore the Occupy Wall Street Open Story.

We invite you to follow the Open Story, and to submit your photos and video to our assignment if you are attending any rallies close to home or, as in Kohl-Riggs' case, somewhere not so close to home.

Stupid hippies?? Are you kidding me? These people who are protesting the greed in wall street are heroes. The only drones I see here are the people who sit on their ass and comment on a web page calling American protesters hippies and ignorant fools. The truth is that the financial companies, banks and wall st institutions are the ones to blame for economic recession. The RAT race is NOT more important than issues like crumbling health care, the homeless and poor hungry children. Not only do these Americans have the right to protest the greedy, they have the obligation, With their iPhones ,iPads, nikons and Androids!!  And for all you swallowing lies and media coverage about terrorist that threaten the safety of our precious America, you not need to look any further than your local business districts. "The true terrorists of our world do not meet at the docks at midnight, or scream "Allahu Akbar" before some violent action. The true terrorists of our world wear 5000 dollar suits and work in the highest positions of finance, government and business."

Concerning Corporate Terrorism:

Any competent person sees the real numbers. The U.S. of America and the global economy is in a depression. If you work for the media or the government you can bear false witness and deny the mathematical facts.

The U.S. is going into depression that mean everyone loses.

The word is ‘Corporate Terrorism’.

The citizens of the U.S. have no representation.

Corporate lawyers are dictators, dictating U.S. Government Policies, dictating The Common Wealth of U.S. Citizens.

Corporate Lobbyists define ‘Protectionism’ and ‘The Sherman Antitrust’

‘Protectionism’ refers to policies or doctrines which protect businesses and workers within the U.S. Protectionism keeps the money in circulation within the U.S. (Circular Flow). Protectionism is the practice of shielding a country's domestic industries from foreign harm. Tariffs protect the human rights of U.S. citizens. For example Chinese women are forced to have abortions. Insects are more humane than Chinese Government Officials.

Today the money flow one way: out of the U.S. - to Slave Labor - to the Tyranny of Communist China and Oppressed India.

‘The Sherman Antitrust Act’ was instated after the 1929 Great Depression.

History repeats itself now with Globalization; one monopoly; one outsourced supplier; every U.S. Citizens labor and profession in imminent danger. International corporate lobbyists are Chinese Terrorists.

The U.S has no manufacturing and no employment.

The U.S. has no Internal Revenue.

What will happen when the U.S. government sends a Reduction in Force Notice to the U.S. military commanders? The answer is: they will nuke China so they don’t have to pay them back, justification of the Military P. P. Curve.

We the people shall try Corporate Terrorists (Executives) and charge them with crimes against humanity. Corporate Terrorism is supporting: communism, monopolistic practices, unfair trade, malice, inciting riots, police officers deaths and global instability (World War).

I am all for protests, but there is only one thing that bothers me about this particular one.  There is no leader!  If we tried to run our country without a president, then nothing would get done.  Why would it be any different for these protests?  Again I'm all for protests but there needs to be some sort of organization if these groups want to get anything done and not just waste their time and energy.

This is what our country needs.  Hold accountable our politicians, lobbyists, and top executives that have made decisions for their best interest and not that our their country.  Our unemployment rate didn't get to 20% on its own. It was from corporations outsourcing jobs claiming globalization but it was simply exploiting labor laws. If we don't correct this soon,, things will only get worse for the other 99% of us..

I, and I feel quite confident a whole 00 percent of the rest of the country, want to know who in the hell ordered the NYPD to unleash their BROWN SHIRT aggression against American citizens who are sick and tired of being bullied and raped by government, corporations, Wall Street, mega "Too big to fail" banks (the top six now control the equal of 60% of the nation's entire GNP), idiot presidential wanna-be(s), failing schools, too-expensive colleges and universities, needless wars, foreclosure ops with mass-document signings, local/state/federal chief executives who continue to flaunt Supreme Court Constitution rulings clarifying the "Law of the Land," 16 percent unemployment (the REAL figure), Justice Department flooding of weapons to Mexican drug lords, and now the wholesale fascist abolition and abatement of the Amendment 1 of the Constitution's guaranteed ". . . right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."  Got that Mayor Bloomburg? Over 700 citizens arrested in one day?!  Since the people have rose in disgusted response to the conditions of the nation, one (1) and ONLY one person has been arrested for alleged assault on a police officer in NYC.  ONE! For what was everybody else arrested?  What is going on in New York City is outrages. If anybody needs to be arrested, it is the mayor and the police chief.  Come on CNN!  Tell us the WHOLE story.  BJG.

Protest are allowed to go on i think, and no one should be arrested! you know why? Because in our Bill of Rights we have freedom of speech! So it looks like the Police should be the ones arrested. And I notice there isn't a leader? Some people look like they don't even know why their there, like they just want to be part of a mob and whatnot. 700 people arrested in one day? What I'd like to know is what in Gods name will the NYPD do wit all these people?

What the protesters want……..A future that has hope.

The Fix America Plan.

Objective……… Decrease Unemployment by 3% by rebuilding America without impacting the deficit.

1)     The US treasury sets up an internal Infrastructure bank.

The bank offers a tax free money market fund that is sold through brokers and banks.

The banks and brokers get the ¼ of 1% as an expense fee. FDIC insurance is not needed for this account since treasury backs the FDIC. (This will bring in 3-8 trillion dollars)

The infrastructure bank invests in higher yielding US Treasury bonds bought back from china and lends money to states and utility companies in the manner listed below.

The infrastructure bank runs at a profit and has a limited number of personnel.

2)     The money is lent to states, with repayment guaranteed by future federal road tax funds. The loans are for necessary infrastructure projects determined by the states which must put up 25% of the cost of any project. The states are lent up to the amount they will receive for the next 15 years in road tax from the federal government. The money must be used for infrastructure projects.

3)     The money is lent to Utility companies to rebuild infrastructure and is guaranteed by their assets. The money is lent at the rate that is 2/3rds of the Treasury bond rate or 1 ½ times the money market rate collected by the infrastructure bank. All utilities must put up at least 25% of their own money for any project.

4)     Build several safe modern nuclear power plants to meet the growing power needs.

5)     Fast track EPA processes for all of these projects in order for them to be shovel ready sooner.

This plan will increase employment directly by up to two million jobs in the next five years as a result of the projects undertaken. It will also create over one million positions as a result of more people working on these projects.

With no change in the tax structure it will increase government tax income and decrease unemployment and welfare costs. It will not be opposed by the tea party because it does not increase the deficit.

Now, I wish to address the issue of Social Security.  As most middle class working people are concerned, Social Security is an entity that was a welcome addition to the New Deal program instituted by Franklin Roosevelt during the Great Depression.  It has been a cornerstone of retirement for working class Americans.  As of late, Social Security’s survival has become a very real concern for working class Americans.  For the record I want to state that working class Americans and most corporations have contributed to the funding of this program.  All working class American have contributed fifteen percent of our income to the program before taxes.  For example, if a person averaged $30,000 dollars a year for fifty years of his or her working life, then the average money contributed results in $220,500.  If you calculate the future value of $4,500 per year at a simple five percent, then after working for fifty years a person would have $892,919.98. If an individual only took out three percent per year, a person would receive $26,787.60 per year.  The money would last for over thirty years and that figure is without any interest being paid on the initial deposit.

If an individual bout an annuity and it paid four percent per year, an individual would have a lifetime income of $2,976.40 per month.  The politicians in Washington have pulled off a bigger Ponzi scheme that Bernie Madoff.  I have to say that I am not at all happy with the thought of being “ripped off” by the federal government.  The politicians have free healthcare, outrageous benefits package, 67 paid holidays, three weeks paid vacation and unlimited paid sick days.  If you ask me, that’s welfare!  The only question is who is benefitting?  Is it the American people?  I think not.  It is government entitlement.

The politicians have the nerve to call Social Security and Medicare entitlement programs.  As far as I can tell, most people in America have been working all of their lives without the benefit of privilege.  Now that most Americans are at that age when they are hoping to collect the money that should be available to them, it appears that the federal government is running out of money due to negligence.

If you fail to help, then don't complain ever again.

Ever been upset at your Cell Phone provider?  How about cable or satellite companies? Landline? Warranty companies or insurance companies? Well that's because de-regulation has allowed contracts that have never been legal to be used by these industries.  Ever read your contracts? They basically say they can do anything without recourse but you are bound to paying your bill even without service in your area.

This is not a Bush or Obama thing, A Democrat or Republican Thing.  This is a Right and Wrong thing.

The reason why people are upset all across the world is to protest this and getting the money out of politics.  Media and financed groups who spend all day ripping on these folks trying to mix the message.  First it was Bums and College Kids, Then it was an organization financed by Jewish Nazi's, then it was created by the Democrats to rival the Tea Party, Now it's a bunch of people begging for handouts.  Well if you fall for any of these just know that you have no right to complain to these companies ever again.  If you choose to blindly follow a "team" and refuse to see what these people are fighting for then keep your mouth shut when gas or energy bills shoot though the roof.  Smile when your wireless bill jumps 30% and don't forget to "hi-five" your kids when your bank hits you with a $39 yearly fee.  I am done with convenience fees.  My voice will join those out there fighting.  I will not criticize those who are camping daily and nightly to be seen and heard.  I will most definitely not call them lazy from my laptop in my warm bedroom.  You want to say something to these groups? Form one and stand out there too, don't call these people lazy from your couch.

Just remember you are either 1% or 99% and the 1% don't care who you think you are and smile the next time you have pay a bill because the company says you do. Enjoy!

It seems like the more articles I read about the Occupy movement, day after day, the more clear it is to me that government officials, on the city, state, and national level, have patience for the movement only so far as they can use it to benefit themselves.

Take, for example, an article that was in the Times yesterday about many of the major cities attempting to shut down the protests. Towards the end of the article, after talking about how cities like Oakland, San Francisco, and Atlanta were "cracking down" on the protesters, the tone takes a detour to talk about how "... the scenes of tear gas in the streets and provocative graffiti- including one spray-painted message reading 'Kill Pigs' in Oakland- have been seized on by some Republicans to try to make the protests a political liability for Democrats."

Seriously? Their missing the point. It's like the government is in their own little world, and the rest of the population is in theirs... like two circles in high school that stay on the periphery of each other, never seeming to have anything to do with the other.

That's not how it's supposed to work, people! The entire point of the government is to be a voice of the people, to serve our interests- what happened? Somehow, somewhere, there was a disconnect between us and them. They've become so caught up in bickering among themselves, with finger-pointing and blame throwing, that they've completely forgotten why they're even in office to begin with. This movement was intended to get their attention and say, "HEY, we're still here, you know, we're supposed to matter! Remember the people who elected you?? Yeah, well we're not happy, and we're gonna change things, because that's what democracy is about."

Meanwhile, these government officials sit in their offices, seemingly entirely disconnected, and some even claim to support the goals of the movement. And yet, how do they show their support? By attempting to shut it down when it begins to annoy them. If we don't retain our rights to free speech and peaceful assembly, then what sets us apart as Americans anymore? What freedoms are they going to allow us to keep? What happened to democracy? They've become so intent on forcing the system on other countries around the world, and yet here at home, they attempt to shut it down! Our country has become the pinnacle of hypocracy.

When will they wake up and remember "we the people?" When did it become "we the government?" This country was founded on the principle of the majority, not the elected- but we've forgotten that, we've lost sight of the entire basis of our constitution, of the reason our country was even founded, why we fought for independence, why we've been fighting wars since the inception of the American Dream. It's for freedom! Where's our freedom now? What would all those soldiers who sacrificed themselves for the freedom of their fellow citizens feel about the treatment of them? How would they feel if they knew that their brothers and sisters were crying out for change, for help, and the government, ignoring the point of it all, used their cries to increase the bipartisanship, to point fingers and lay blame on the other party? I'm sure they'd be ashamed of what the country the died for has become. I know I am.

Marshall Law (that's the way to handle everything)It works in Syria, Libya and Nazi Germany and it wouldn't be a big thing but the companies like turner block all the stories it would be so easy to fix all this, bail out the people (working class)not the banks

Just to let you all know If it wasn't for the working class people you wouldn't have Socks, underwear shoes clothes cars ATM machines phones (both kinds) internet Diamond rings, airplanes, Space shuttle, Flat screen TV's, toilet seats, Electricity, water in homes, heat in those homes, so i say when you take manufacturing out of a country you kill that country, bring back manufacturing Its time for the rich to become poor

Hi my name is Matt; I was born into what many people would call a "ghetto". My father’s family was quite well off since his father owned his own business for over 20 years and was still going. After my dad and mom had my oldest brother they moved out on their own. My father was going to school and my mom was a nurse, a few years later they had me and my brother. Sadly they ended up getting divorced and my mom raised us by herself. All three of us brothers completed High school and continued on to school. My brothers now work for the Army and the city. My mother has worked in social services for over 17 years and I am still in school till this day. Now that my boring life story is over lets begin!

Occupy goals? Down with capitalism? Don’t forget the corrupt...

Their website was not very helpful and I don't watch much Television.

Here is what I believe. ---> Corporation "Lobbying" should not be legal.

Campaign Contributions for politicians is nothing new but should never

benefit the candidate himself financially but only his political party.

The "Rich" should be equally taxed.

Working in America is absolutely a given right if you are a legal citizen.

The thing that confuses me the most about the "Occupy" movement would

be mainly the 99% seem to expect handouts from major companies. Sure

there may be a small percentage of people who are wealthy, but that is only

a very small percent.

My opinion thus far about the 99%... Though many of us including myself

are not born rich nor do we get to go to the best schools.

EVERYONE and yes that means everyone has the opportunity to make

something of themselves. First thing? Get motivated sort your priorities

go to school... basically aim for a good job.

BONUS!

+ Would like to add this if it is not part of the "Occupy" movement’s goals.

Would be how our communities differ. Please don't call me a hypocrite or a racist.

Communities of the lower class whether the race is Caucasian, African or Hispanic they do get treated differently. Here are a few examples as to how they get treated differently:

housing, schools, law enforcement, community development & maintenance.

To avoid any unnecessary controversy I will not get discuss every subject pointed out.

The first up for discussion is schools. Under-classed schools are usually over populated and learning materials are almost always low quality or lacking.

Housing and Community development & maintenance I will use one example from my personal experience.

The neighborhood I lived in was considered the ghetto like stated before. The streets, buildings, houses and pretty much everything was broken down.

There were endless potholes, garbage, vacant houses, and homeless people with nowhere to go for shelter. And yes because of this there was allot of people who caused problems too.

Now if you were to go down the street a few miles on the other side of the park near our home everything looked new, even the old. Now in the upper class neighborhood the streets never had a problem with potholes. The city kept this area clean. The police often strolled this area, and would stop anyone that appeared to be low class. All of the buildings and sidewalks looked like something out of a picture book. They had two recreation areas, One of them was funded by the city.
