The latest and greatest on CNN iReport, brought to you by Team iReport.
Please join us here in the blog for our weekly roundtable chat. We want to tell you about a cool new project called "Destination U.S.A." CNN's travel producers are going to be working with the iReport community to create an insider's guide to some of America's great cities.
We also wanted to talk about our latest joint assignment with our friends at Mashable. We're asking people to show us projects inspired by Pinterest, a popular social network that makes it easy to share images and ideas that you love.
And as always, we'll be happy to answer any questions, comments or concerns you may have.
Comments will open at 2:30 p.m. ET. We'll talk with you then.
Hi everyone and welcome to the roundtable.
Sorry for the late start.
hey guys! we have two super-fun projects to talk about today. (plus whatever you want, of course.)
Greetings! Hope all is well. Excited to hear about the new projects!
Hi Omekongo,
Good to hear from you. That's really cool that you got together with W.J. O'Reilly.
I'll bet y'all had a good time.
I didn't even know it was going on until just a minute or two when the banner suddenly showed.
hello!
the O & O dialogue was just super.
@davidw it was amazing! As you know, I love the community iReport has created. I plan on doing more with other ireporters!
Hello david! Hello rachel! Hey omekongo!
Sorry about that. I tweeted about it last night, but I had to work from home today, so that through me off my game a bit.
I see we have Banner Ads appearing on iReports now davidw. I hope they aren't going to take over.
OK so, as i'm currently the only girl in this roundtable, i'll say: i'd love to have some guys submit to our pinterest assignment. ;) the submissions are BEAUTIFUL so far, but it's all women.
i want to see how guys are using pinterest, too! and i'm sure our friends at mashable do. ;)
Hey rachel8, I'm gay...but has no spark to my interest either...LOL...sorry.
Hey SPK,
I haven't seen the ads you're talking about yet.
Hello Hello. Super sunny in San Diego today!
Hello, everyone! Greetings from Berlinale!
hi sorry for the delay greetiings from Mexico city to all!
Going to the pinterest website looks like it really is pretty much a female only interest.
@SPK the banner ads are only on iReports for one assignment (because that particular assignment happened to get sponsored).
I like looking at Pinterest, but I don't quite get it yet. It's neat to flip through though.
Hi, markpel and rafagomezd. Welcome.
@davidw I SAW when tried to correct a title for a recent report the title is not able to be altered only deleted letters but not replaced, is showing Mêxico instead showing México, do you know what about that?
hi elchueco : ) thanks!
@rachel8, I have no idea what pinterest is but you have sparked my interest! I'll check it out! Off to get the kids so I'll be in and out over the next hour. Rock on Team iReport!
How wierd is that. They have gone again. It was a couple of days ago they appeared. I wasnt the only person that saw them.
I'm seeing more stuff posted by guy's on Pinterest.
Ciao! Omekongo
I did see a couple of guys on there...but it really does seem geared to the female constituency.
YAY @omekongo! we have a team iReport pinterest, if you want to get an idea of some things we're doing: http://pinterest.com/cnnireport/
I might just submit a pinterest iReport :)
Elchueco, que tal?!
Hi everyone! Dropping by to say hello.
@k3vsDad Pinterest was actually started by a guy!
@armandog8 Please do! Would love to see it.
@davidw how can we post at pinterest? i just saw the spanish spoken also and looks a very good CMS content with a lot of capabylities
Hello nsaidi
Hey SPK,
Sometimes ads come and go or are only linked to special assignments.
We've also linked up a couple of CNN videos this week that start with ads, so maybe that's it?
I made it!
along the lines of what OmeKongo and I shot yesterday, do we have the technology to pull off dialogues or panels by skype or somesuch?
so our colleague @katie just reminded me that pinterest is currently invite-only. if any of you guys are interested in signing up for an account and giving it a try, please private message me your email address and i'll shoot you an invite.
LOL, rachel8, wouldn't be the first time a guy targeted a female audience...snicker
Got a quick question, Would it be possible for future roundtables to have a 'chat-like' structure, so that we don't have to constantly go to the end of the page-after submitting a comment, to see the latest and greatest. I understand the current format is done to keep track of the comments but I'm sure a log can also be taken from the 'chat like interface' so that everybody can check it out later on. Just a suggestion
Question for producers - would an iReport be in jeopardy of being vetted if we put an ad in it? To get our own iReports sponsored?
Rachel's our resident expert. So she can explain better how it works, but it basically lets you save things that inspire you on the web and then put them in categories. It could be muscle cars you want to drive, woodworking projects to save for later or fried things you want to eat.
david, any closer to knowing who's following us or to being able to edit comments or know if someone has commented on another's report that we have also commented on?
good examples, dave :)
I think it was an Airbus Ad.
Are there plans to put Ads on All pages?
I see that a couple of people have asked about coming up with a better way to hold these roundtables. I don't have a good answer yet, but I'll try to do some experimenting this week.
Skype might work, or Google+ or something like that.
I'll let you know what I come up with next week.
@SPK nope, not that i know of. like i said, this was a special case.
@david could you please put me also in contact with cnn mexico to drop me some mail and phone? at rafagomezd@gmail.com i have excelent articles and really would love to upload more but as is on spanish is a bit tricky on the cnn site
An actual Chat App might work davidw.
It wouldnt have to be anything too fancy.
or blog and skype maybe? that would be better we have some issues to disscuss, technical ones, themes, catergories etc
Also for producers since you are talking about this.... @seeitnow charges for his iReports. I think his website says it starts at $599. What do you think about that? Not an issue with getting iReports vetted & promoted by CNN?
Thanks for answering both questions.
Hi Chris,
I don't think I know the answer to that question right now. Could you please email me some more information about what you've got in mind and I'll find out.
Thanks
@Chrismorrow, been trying to reach you. what kind of camera's are you using?
@rafagomezd: For the iReport which you had trouble changing the title, it looks like you have too many characters in the title. Try making the title a little bit shorter and you'll be able to change it.
I don't know anything about that Chris.
Sorry I don't have a better answer.
@chrismorrow how dare you suggest I charge foir an iReport. I have never, ever charged for an iReport and never will.
hi everyone
Message for the Producers.. Heads Up.. The only stop in the US for the Continental Cup Ski Jumping Competition is this weekend where I live. Many of the very top "World Cup" contenders have shown up UNannounced.. Poland and Austria have sent their best, we don't know why either.. Needless to say, we are excited! I'm loading up a quick story now.
Thanks DaElmer.
That's always a cool event.
@Chrismorrow
If you are going top make false allegations you better back them up Chris. How ridiculous! I'm not going to get into a petty argument over this. It's a cheap shot at someone with an axe to grind
ok Davidw - thanks for the reply. I will email you.
I truly enjoy being part of CNN iReport and appreciate your time.
about Pinterest - all of my best girlfriends are on it and have tried to get me involved in their madness for over a year. They LOVE it and talk about it 24/7. Great website. I also love the post Katie showed her creations. Very inspiring. :)
@chrismorrow, this is taken directly from my website:
To get Percy's popularity working for YOU, contact his team at Percy's World Media to create buzz for your business, destination or event through various side publicity, non-CNN business and corporate video options.
We are always traveling, so no matter where you are in the world, there's a good chance we'll be in your area soon! And even if we're not, we're already connected with top production teams virtually everywhere. So, we can do all of the leg work and get you set up with an amazing local team to produce your videos.
For as little as $599, we can change your world!
@elchueco: thanks! is done!
@seeitnow
Your website says you charge to tell their story starting at $599 and all you promote is your CNN iReports. How am I reading it wrong? And my apologies if I am wrong. Though, what is wrong with getting paid? I was thinking you are a pioneer.
SO, i'm going to go ahead and jump in and talk about our SUPER-FUN COOL NEW destination USA project, because i'm worried we'll run out of time!
There are two takeaways from this:
One, I think it's generally better to handle issues involving specific other users privately, instead of in this forum.
Two, it is very important to avoid conflict of interests
Have a great weekend!
Destination USA is a collaboration with CNN's travel section. We're picking a different US city every month and doing "insider" stories from there, featuring your photos and travel tips.
Yay for @rachel8 to get us back on track! :)
Geesh! I opened a can of worms. Sorry guys.
This month is New Orleans! As you can see on the assignment, we're asking you to pick NOLA's single best food item or dish at a restaurant.
http://ireport.cnn.com/topics/743616
There are already lots of mouthwatering iReports, but I know more of you are passionate about NOLA and have something to share! Would love to see your choices.
Destination U.S.A is going to be really cool.
I talked to Marnie, our travel editor yesterday and she said she's really hoping to get a lot of tips for places that probably won't show up in the travel guides.
She said that if you don't have a photo of the place that's okay.
I would like to be 100% clear that I am "NOT" in favour of iReports charging for producing iReports. I do not now, never have and never will. While we're on the subject though perhaps Chris Morrow could reveal the value of the passes she obtains for free to comic con.
And next month is Miami, the city that keeps the roof blazin'.
This is the first year I was able to get a Media Pass.. Will be getting some awesome shots this year, wait till you see the ones I am loading right now @david
Once you guys get to DC I'm on it.
for anyone's interest, the dialogue Omekongo and I video'd yesterday happened organically (I'm by chance staying in DC for the month) but really enhances the sometimes solitary activity of iReporting--I recommend you take the plunge and try collaborating where possible.
What about holding these roundtables on a live chat service?
Awesome, @armandog8! That's what we like to hear.
Hey Chris!
Interesting experiment, thanks @wjoreilly
Seeitnow, a simple Server Side App would allow that to be done from here.
And thanks @omekongo
Thanks for the chat suggestions armandog8 and SPK. We understand there's limitations with our current round table format. This is a discussion we have had here at the iReport desk and you should know that our platform is always evolving and we take your suggestions to heart.
thanks, hhanks.
@wjoreilly The two of you are truly a dynamic duo. We were just talking about it today. Nice work on your collaboration!
Chris- don't let it bother you. We enjoy your reports.
@wjoreilly I agree! I really, really enjoyed listening to you and Omekongo talk about current events in an informal setting. Thanks for giving it a shot, we'd love to see more iReporters follow suit.
Just want to say again for the latecomers - if you're interested in doing the Pinterest assignment (http://ireport.cnn.com/topics/740676) and don't have a Pinterest account, please PM me your email and I'll send you an invite.
Can't wait for the DC destination story!
thanks, nsaidi, it's a collab that deserves a do-over, no doubt.
The only drawback with Live Chat is Cross Conversations. Folks that aren't used to them may get a little confused if it moves fast.
@wjorielly
I loved your conversations with Omekongo!!! Great job.
@seeitnow
I volunteer my time to Comic-con and donate all of my content to them. A great organization and I'm happy to be a part of it as a popular arts lover. Hope it stays in San Diego!
Thanks guys for liking the first installment of the "O&O Show!" lol...
thanks, Chris.
We'll try a couple of things internally to see what might work and then see what y'all think.
It's pretty clear that several of you know a lot more about this than I do, so t would be great if you want to send me suggestions.
My email is david.williams@cnn.com or you can PM me.
@Daviddw, I just sent you an email with a few links to potentially implementing 'liveblogging' for future roundtables. Hope it helps
Story Posted - "Flying through mid-air in Upper Michigan"
Check out the main picture..
I think they should have a link on the IReport link that goes to the community page for things like 'most commented'. I think if it was easier for the general public to find and there would be more interaction. If there is a link I can't find it on the 'hello' IReport page.
Always on the lookout for roundtable improvement ideas, thanks to all for the suggestions.
Thanks, everyone! Any questions about the Pinterest or Destination USA assignments, please feel free to PM me. They're both going to be awesome!
Some one form Mexico or Latinamerica here?
Thanks armandog8 and rafagomezd. I'll take a look at your suggestions and go from there.
Also, thanks for the suggestion Democritic.
We'll take a look at it.
No rafagomezd,
The CNN Mexico and CNN Espanol folks aren't here. We should invite them sometime or talk with them about doing a roundtable for the Spanish-speaking audience.
Sorry but I feel quite strongly that iReporters should never ever charge for their services. This is a slippery slope you never want to approach, even remotely. Think through the consequence of charging a fee to produce iReports and you can imagine the looming nightmare of conflict of interests. David knows quite well that in circumstance where money changes hands the story cannot and should not ever be vetted or featured which would make charging for an iReport a stupid idea in the first place place.
I want to thank everyone for being here and I'll look forward to talking to you all next week.
Take care
Thanks davidw, i am good on english but on Latinamerica we have issues and ireporter for stuffs would be awsome : )
Thanks for the conference, anyone need some story from mexico city PM me or send me an email to rafagomezd@gmail.com
Take care guys!
I guess I was looking for a more direct link than going through 'Explore' and then more and then.....
Making it as easy as possible for general use. Thanks,
bye
Me in Mexico city
