iReport roundtable: Thursday at 2:30 p.m. ET

Please join us in the blog for our weekly roundtable discussion.

We want to tell you about our new video comment feature that will let you record and upload webcam videos to iReport directly from CNN.com stories.

We're still testing things out, but our goal is to turn every CNN.com story into an invitation to participate in the conversation. You can try it out yourself by scrolling down to the bottom of this story about Tuesday's primary results.

If you've got any other questions, comments or suggestions, we'll be happy to talk about those too.

Comments will open at 2:30 p.m. ET. We'll talk with you then.

Hello, everyone.  Happy Thursday.

If you are at SXSW, please be sure to check out the Paul Simon documentary being screened.  It's called "Under African Skies" and it's about the making of the album, "Graceland."

We were in Johannesburg last last August filming it and we are very happy and proud of it.  :o)

Glad you like it EagleNews. You should try it out sometime.

The way it works is that when you post a video comment from the story it posts to iReport. Then when we vet the story it will show up in the carousel.

The tool seems like a cool new tweak, but what's going on with this site that has made finding stories of interest so difficult?  I'm sure if I uploaded a video about how my puppy can roll over, it will make the front page, while good 'ol socio-political commentary in the form of a written report is just not worth anything.  That's what it seems like and the way it has always been around here.  It's why I don't post much anymore.

A suggestion I would like to make is to give iReport users the ability to disable the comments section of their iReports similar to YouTube.  The option to disable comments on YouTube discourages "Internet Trolls" and makes posting a much more enjoyable experience.  You have the option to “Allow comments automatically”, “Allow all comments with approval only” or “Don't allow comments at all”.   I understand the desire to allow others in the community the ability to offer constructive criticism, or to open a forum for discussing issues. But much of what I see posted is nothing more then "Internet Trolls" trying to get an emotional rise out of people.

Gene5335's suggestion is interesting. We're doing a lot of work on comments right now and trying to find an approach that balances civility with spirited debate.

I think this year's elections will be a lot different than 2008 here on iReport.

We launched iReport.com right as the election was gearing up into a frenzy, so we hadn't really developed a relationship with the community.

I think now, most iReporters know how to treat each other and the standards of behavior that we expect.

People don't have to like each other, or even always be nice, but we do expect folks to be respectful.

Thanks Percy,

Right now we are testing the widget on one new story every day. We'll expand that once we know that our servers can handle the load.

The thing I'm excited about is that it will give us the potential to ask more targeted questions because once people's iReports are approved they'll appear in the story and be part of that content.

We don't like to create iReport assignments if we don't have a plan for turning people's submissions into content.

I have to agree David, things are much better. All the folks that have been around for awhile are usually very respectful. It is the new folks that most often push the limits. Not that all new folks aren't welcome , they are of course. Yet the trolls do still hide under the bridge.

Ryn, it wasn't so much during, as after the election that things got really out of hand for many.  I was just going over my "Another one bites the dust" report.  While it was an horrific time filled with everything including threats, it was exhilarating at times and in all truth we were testing new ground here.   It kind of makes me proud to have been part of this forum almost from the very beginning.

Request: As you consider your iReport topics, please remember that iReport reaches far beyond an American audience (you know the demographics better than I). I've had many conversations about the US elections with my friends from other countries and I can tell you that many of them perceive Americans as a bunch of buffoons wasting too much time and attention on things that in the large scheme of things just are not important and only drag us down.  Their perceptions on us are downright embarrassing and somewhat accurate.  ;oP

March 15, 2012

JoyfulGypsy, that has been the perception internationally for decades that I know of when watching US politics. Our system really makes no sense especially outside our national borders.

Debates are good, disagreeing helps us to learn.

Degrading, attacking ones self esteem, integrity and intelligence is another story and is cyber bullying.

Bullying of any sort is unacceptable.

March 15, 2012

@k3vsDad Thanks for trying! I'm starting to see some patterns ... one thing I would suggest is if you are trying the video comments feature and having trouble, sometimes switching browsers does the trick. It works really well for me in Chrome and Firefox on my PC.

March 15, 2012

If I may, I travel frequently and I say this with no prejudice and an eye on CNN. First of all I have never been to a city, town or country anywhere that has not heard of CNN, bar none. Then the next thing I hear is how much they enjoy CNN and how fair they perceive CNN, bar none. In other words when CNN speaks the entire world listens, trust me I know this. This is why I stress that it is important to invite all people around the world on all of CNN to participate in whatever topic you choose.

Glad to hear it oldschool.

One thing I think will help this year is that most iReporters have realized that they have a lot in common, even they disagree about politics.

I think that any time we can focus on that common ground it helps us treat each other decently.

If y'all want to argue and debate and scrap a bit, that's great. A good argument can be fun and informative.

It's just when it gets nasty and personal that I'm going to get involved.

@DavidW I posted an iReport for the first time the other night and I was wondering is there any particular reason that I can't upload both pictures and video to a story or was that an error on the part of my browser, and also if not having that video is the reason I wasn't vetted for my story because I quoted the actors in my story?
