The latest and greatest on CNN iReport, brought to you by Team iReport.
Please join us here in the blog for our weekly roundtable discussion. We want to talk about how we can use social media to bring your iReports to a wider audience. Y'all put a lot of work into your stories, so we want as many people to see them as possible.
Right now, we focus most of our social media efforts on Facebook and Twitter, but we're also active on Instagram (See our photos, Get the app) and Pinterest and we're always experimenting when new sites come online.
How do you think we're doing? Are our posts on Twitter and Facebook helpful? Should we be doing something different? Do you think we should be more active on other sites? Where do you spend most of your time online?
Comments will open at 2:30 p.m. ET. We'll look forward to talking with you then and we'd love it if you invited friends you think would be interested in iReport.
Hi everyone and welcome to the roundtable.
Hi all! It's a beautiful day in LA! What about NY? Cold enough for ya?..haha!! just kidding!
Hi there
Good to see everyone.
hello, everyone.
Hello, I am up cos its boiling hot, and can't sleep a wink
I'm all over Facebook and Twitter. You all should post and tweet more often.
Hi everybody! Good to see you all.
since the topic is social media, i'd like to say that i try to coordinate my posts on ireport and tweet them out to interested folks...it's worked pretty well, but i'd like to get some pointers on how to take it up a notch or three.
Seriously though...I get more Facebook posts from The Daily Beast than iReport. They post like sometimes 10 times a day. I see maybe 1 to 3 iReport posts and sometimes none at all.
Been deeply involved in the impace of social media and politics. Just finished a tour of the U.S. speaking about the power of social media and iReports. Audiences are riveted by what iReports can capture!
While we're getting settled, I want to introduce the newest member of Team iReport.
Dorrine Mendoza (DorrineM) just started this week as our new social media producer.
@MelissaF Ah yes, they are addictions for me. Curious, what would you want to read about?
chris morrow is very adept at building huge twitter followings...i'd love to hear more from her on how she does it....when we are adept at using tw/fb everyone profits, right?
Hi there. Looking forward to getting to know everyone! Having trouble getting the blog to show up in Chrome. Switching to Firefox.
I did a whole research paper on how Obama handles social media. I called it "POTUS Channels Media." It's about how he bypasses MSM to deliver his own message through social media. I was thinking about submitting it to a magazine. Suggestions?
hi, dorrine
Hi DorrineM, hi everyone, by the way.
hi, nsaidi
@MelissaF Thanks for your thoughts on our Facebook page. We're trying to post more; always a delicate balance since we don't want to clog up people's feeds. How many posts per day do you think is ideal?
Question to everyone: Do you follow our Facebook and Twitter accounts?
Hi @wjoreilly @nsaidi
@nsaidi...I like to read about what other people think. I love getting all views on current events. I love reading the comments in the thread to see what people are saying. I believe iReport can use Facebook a lot more to promote the pundits and other interesting topics of the day. Keep it fresh and conversational. Promote comments and feedback.
And if so, what would you like to see more of, or less of?
Sounds like an interesting topic MelissaF. I don't have any suggestions except to try to focus the tone of your pitch so it fits the voice of the magazine (and to take my advice with heavy grain of salt because I've never pitched to a magazine).
when ireport/cnn tweets out a story of mine, it's been reassuring for me to see, but have to say, it would be great to get things tweeted out by cnn multiple....many multiples of times....btw, does anyone know of an automated way of tweeting out stuff? software, etc...free, of course.
@dsashin...Don't worry about clogging someone's feed. My sister in law re-posts her diva pictures all the time to get it to show up in someone's timeline. Because timelines are like Tweets..you can miss them the first time around. I think you should bump it up to 5 a day. In an 8 hour work day do 1 an hour and 1 more before you all leave for the day.
Hey all, sorry I'm late.
@dsashin...no I no longer have a Facebook account and never set up a Twitter...so sorry, I don't follow.
@wjoreilly We hear you! That said, we have lots of great content to promote so we have to spread the love around. Do you always repost/retweet our posts?
Hello, Dorrine Mendoza and all from warm Berlin (Germany)!
@wjoreilly Bufferapp and Crowdbooster are good automaters. There is an automation/scheduling feature in tweetdeck but it can be a bit buggy in my experience.
Oh and tweets more often like 1 an hour. People's streams go by so fast I may only read a few a day in my timeline and I follow about 2000 people.
Is CNN iReport a social media?
I highly recommend Tweetdeck to monitor multiple streams of tweets worldwide. It helps you out in two ways, 1) it provides additional links, URL's, images, and videos on anything, and 2) it then helps you see streams of tweets to see trends, who tweets most, and how to strategically place your tweets by followers and time. It has been an invaluable, free tool. Tuesday is the best day to tweet BTW. Facebook on Monday! :)
I meant 1 every 2 hours..sorry for the typo
What about you @Polyrabbit? What social networks to you participate in?
@MelissaF We love posting about you guys, and that's great to hear.
hi, melissaf....caught on to your suggestion about ireport using facebook more to promote pundits...have point counter point debates between people....things like that...dorrinem, what sort of things do you see getting ramped up?
@nsaidi..and we iReporters love the recognition...it validates our selfless work for the better of the good...ok that sounded hokey..hehe
@mediaman Where are you getting that info from? Interesting.
@markpel -- what do you think? What networks do you participate in, and how do you define social media?
Which in anyone's opinion is the more practical, best just for the purpose of reposting from iReport: Facebook or Twitter? And why?
Hi Polyrabbit! Glad to see you here :)
dsashin, yes, always try to rt your tweets, etc...it is helpful on this end.
@wjoreilly - do you have any specific suggestions for how we could better promote the pundits, on Facebook?
I also think that the CNN twitter account or facebook account with the most followers should automatically retweet and repost iReports stuff to get more followers.
@dashin
There are some studies out there we researched (I do not have the document) that show the optimal posts on Facebook is about 6 a day.
Of course I blow through that sometimes by 2 X and have not lost too many.
Question for the gallery: When we post stuff, of course people stop by and comment and a discussion takes place. Some people would call this "engagement," although that word makes me wish someone would buy me a ring. In any case, have you had any valuable experiences interacting with commenters or community members, and do you have thoughts on things we can do with these folks that stumble upon the posts?
@wjoreilly Things that help others mostly. Dan Zarella did a study recently about the best/worst words used to get your message amplified. Worst: My, Mine, Sleep, Watching etc. Best: How, Best, Your etc.
yes, mediaman, tweetdeck is good, but for me a little unwieldy....i should read up on features (but i don't)
@dsashin I think the whole pundit of the week thing is good, even though I haven't been one yet ;) Maybe one of these days..lol
I also think you should bring back like a superstar system, but one that recognizes just one person a week..like who ever had the most popular iReport..not just views, but seen on TV too. Need to promote the follow me button too.
Hello!
I think this discussion on post frequency is pretty interesting, but I want to flip things just a tiny bit.
How many of those posts do you read?
Do you click on the links and go to the stories or do you read the headline and move on?
Are their types of links you're more likely to click on?
Hello.
Very deceive to see that not much of my live coverage in Paris was shown, showing the perspective of french individuals, their toughts on the election on that particular day and the night at the Bastille where all the supporters were there. Got to down load my 15 videos on youtube after all. Too bad.
A la Bastille victoire de Francois Hollande. You couln't ask for a better timing and no body from CNN on the site that I know was there when I was there. Too bad that we show very little interest for new style coverage and French politic.
I don't see much of the stuff on face and ireport either. I don't even see my own twitt.
It's unfortunate that we don't have all our names on the side so people can actualy click it when they go on the main page to look up for some articles.
I have been talking about my swimming pool garden success but my friends don't seem to know where to look.
Thanks @ewillies. Do you follow our Facebook page? What type of posts do you like?
dsashin, yes, I think iReport is a social media too. I participate in Facebook and Twitter. BTW I follow you and your mother. @markpelton
Tweetdeck can be overwhelming yes, @wjoreilly
You just have to deal with lots of info...and don't leave the notifications on!
I forgot to say congratulation to Dorrine. Lucky you!
@nsaidi You just reminded me of something. When someone comments on our iReport there should be a button that they can hit if they want to continue to follow the thread. So they are notified anytime someone posts a new comment. I've started conversations before, but it took awhile to have the conversation because you have to go back to the iReport and keep refreshing...like this blog..haha
not following twitter... for me the question is...it doesn't matter if you post less or more often, anyway i agree better not to load the stream too much, but how to make people to watch the posts and give a feedback. Have you measured "likes" and comments in relation of ireport population number, is it about a million?how much ireporters are involved "like" and comment communication?as well sharing?
mediaman: I like Tweetdeck for monitoring filtered streams of content and multiple things at once, especially in a situation where a lot of people are tweeting about something going on right now. It can be very helpful in certain situations.
Have you tried Hootsuite, which is a web-based Twitter client? (And has an app, like TD)?
Are there other ways you consume Twitter? And, do you normally go to the website or do you stick with clients? Or apps? Are you at a computer or on the go?
So many questions ... heh heh.
Hey everyone! Great convo about social media so far.
@airnation, we tweeted to you about your swimming pool garden story that appeared on CNN Eatocracy -- did you not see the post?
@davidw
I read links to posts that I "like" most people don't. I did an experiment by connecting a link to my FB and my Wordpress website. There were tones of likes but very few clicks to the site. You have to have a good preamble to convince the user it is worth the click. I did one on healthcare today and my count is now at 3376 (like=900+)
dorrinem, just signed up for crowdbooster....thanks...i'll give it a ride....looks good...i'd like more infor on message amplification..can you direct me to dan zarella's stuff?
You can send them the direct link @airnation:
http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-781182
Hello everyone. I spend most of my online time either on iReports, Facebook or Twitter. I find the CNN tweets are helpful to highlight stories I didn't know about. The facebook useage by CNN is pretty scarce, maybe there are more CNN facebook pages that I don't know about?
@markpel Thanksk. I'll have to let my mother know!
E-mail me if you'd like the infographic on best tweeting times, when I post the URL here, my posts won't appear. It is information information from mediabistro.com
@david
On another note. I like to monitor performance. I would normally embed a lot of iReport videos in my blog. Problem is it does not increase the counts at CNN so instead I must embed Youtube to ensure I get accurate counts. I think if many iReporters had that feedback we could attrack more traffic to iReports and visa-versa by embedding the videos in our own blogs and other platforms.
Hello @airnation1 and @markpel. Thanks for your comments.
@kcrep CNN has loads of different Facebook accounts -- iReport, CNN (facebook.com/cnn), CNN International (facebook.com/cnninternational) for starters. And then lots of the shows have pages.
dsashin....yeah, let me think on the facebook thing...i get an image of a split screen with a couple of ireporters going at it, either in real time, or...maybe they are point/counterpoint videos....could actually do both on key topics...this, of course, could directly parallel stuff on ireport and drive people both ways, from fb to ireport and ireport to fb.....
That's a good idea @MelissaF. We'll take a look at it. I can all but guarantee that we won't call it iReport Superstars, but we'll do some brainstorming on highlighting iReporters.
I have a meeting...nice to talk to everyone..Have a great day!! Love and gratitude!!!
Well I think I broke my record with the most posts in 24 hours.
Spent the weekend at Harper's Ferry WV and took over 1000 images and video. Not that I am trying to use all 1000. I wanted to post under travel but did not see a suitable category except Travel Photo of the day. Yeh right, photo. lol So any suggestions where these could be better used? Have everything from World Fair trade Day May 12 to John Brown's Fort. I know it is not LA or NY but! But wait I still have more! :) I luv y'all.
Bye MelissaF, thanks for stopping by.
for my story if you want to have more readers I like reddit a lot. Twitter only gets 12% of my reading compare to reddit and blogger is good too, it even give you where your readers come from. I have a lot of Russians readers reading my book right now. Unfortunately twitting is good on peak hours for example: American Idols.
Perhaps CNN can talk to Facebook owner so we can share our cnn facebook coverage and twitt it back. Is sharing goes both ways or not?
Hi! Just arrived.
@nsaidi I am a magazin writer. I got lot of informations and contacts from twitter.
Thanks @dsashin...I'll get hooked up with those.
Hi Ryn,
I loved your four leaf clover iReport the other day. I didn't get a chance to email you about it, but it was fun.
How do you find them all?
To answer your question. I think Travel photo of the day would be good. Our travel editors keep a close eye on that, so they'll see it.
anybody else get a message from "codyking" in moscow?
@airnation1 Cool that you got some readers for your book. Noticed you mentioned Reddit. We're fascinated with that site. What do you think draws you and others there? What other places do you go to read about things? You also mentioned blogger.
yes I did last night, I send you a tweet thanking you was it you? You were sick too with the flu...
dorrinem, can you set crowdbooster to tweet out, say by the minute? all is see is a one shot scheduling....sorry if this is drifting off topic....
@airnation
We like to tag iReporters in our Facebook posts as often as we can. I think we can only do it if the person is a fan of our facebook page.
@markpel Awesome. What do you think it is about Twitter that makes it easy to do this? And how do you find what you need?
@airnation1 - no, that was Kat Kinsman, the editor of Eatocracy, who wrote the story. I manage the @cnnireport account.
Speaking of Reddit, did you noticed that the iReport Debate voting interactive was the second-most popular thing to be shared from all of CNN on Reddit?! Make sure you take a minute to vote for your top 10 election issues here: http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2012/05/politics/ireport.debate.poll/index.html
I almost always Tweet, of Facebook my iReports or others iReports.
@Davidw Just out working in the yard, lot's of clover and my eyes just seem to go right for them. You are not going to believe this but I found 11 more just yesterday, maybe I should take a photo of them does anyone know if their is a specific clover that is naturally four leaf instead of three? anyway I did ok at Black Jack at Charles town.
Ok will keep filing under photo of the day, but don't say I didn'y warn you. Is this social enough?
Actually just to clarify Dave's point earlier about tagging, we would love to tag iReporters all the time, but we have discovered that it's not possible to tag people from a page (as opposed to a personal account) unless the person has already commented on the post.
Hey @wjoreilly,
Dorrine had to go to a meeting. Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question.
Interesting discussion... have a great time!
yes David but sometimes you talk and it comes in the conversation and you tell them yes go and see it on cnnireport...there should be a fast track people write our pen name and it shows up. It will be more accessible to a public at large, no?
thanks, david, no prob
gotta run....take care, all.
The easiest way to direct someone to your iReport profile is to send them the link to your profile http://ireport.cnn.com/people/airnation1
A system for looking up names would be nice, but I'm not sure how it would work
ok maybe she decided to follow me on twitter.
Let's do that again,
I thank you very much!!!
Gotta go. Thanks to all.
I would also encourage everyone to make sure your twitter handles or any other social media user names are in your iReport profiles.
That makes it easier for us to mention you.
Hi @wjoreilly Meeting was rescheduled but yes you can schedule by the minute click New Tweet > a box opens and you can select day, hour, minute.
can anyone give me back the cnn ireport number to call direct and send pictures from my european phone instead of waiting for me to go to the hotel with their loosy internet that takes for ever to download?
This takes a couple steps, but if you ever need to search for a user or iReport, you can type a search term in the CNN search box and then, when you get to the results page, do an iReport search for the term or username. It is case-sensitive, but you can type a portion of the search term if that's all you know.
@airnation We have international versions of CNN Apps that include iReport functionality if you have a smart phone: http://www.cnn.com/mobile/index.landing.html
if that doesn't work, you can email images to ireport@cnn.com and they will post as an unclaimed iReport.
Before we go, I wanted to let you know that Anderson Cooper is doing a special AC360 hangout on Google plus tonight at 6:45 p.m. ET.
https://plus.google.com/106168900754103197479/posts
Bye everyone, gotta roll. One last question ... we may have touched on this already but I have no shame ... were there any other social networks that you guys love, besides the ones mentioned here?
planning to investigate all today's posts later, quite late here, have a nice day, good night also
Thanks everyone.
We'll be back next week.
Feel free to email me with any other questions at david.williams@turner.com.
howdy!
Ciao!
Yes, to answer your question, I go to reddit because I am writing a book call

Cryptology 101
you can read it on blogger but it's not finish...
it s a book in progress.
Waiting fro CISA ...
for those who dont know niet on cryptography
it is fun and wild

Simon ....the greatest of all already send me his little horsy too many times.
now reddit is risky
Some of the anonymous guys, and hackers surf along and sometimes your computer can get bugged but my knowledge on what goes on around the world is perfect for that sometime one from the north countries will reveal stuff before the press had put their hands on that makes it more dangerous and fun...for those who likes it.
You were warn!
politics to an all new level.
thank you David do they call people sometime on their phone to tell you what is going on ? cell skyping ?
Hi Quintin, hi respier, thanks for stopping by. Looks like the roundtable has ended, but do please feel free to comment with your thoughts/ideas/questions etc. (or contact David as described above) here on this post. We'll stop by later ...
Correction, goodbye respier. :)
aurevoir!
@dsashin
1) I would humbly suggest posting every (CNN) iReport to Facebook as a public feed with a descriptive preamble.
2) I would also tweet every (CNN) report a couple times in a 24 hour period.
I have a few other ideas to increase traffic for both iReports and around.
Anyway to make iReport so iReporters can post a blog/project? I have an idea I've researched and want to present, but it's 10,000 words long, with tables and graphs. Just want to get it out there..
I DONT KNOW IF THIS IS THE RIGHT PLACE TO REPORT SOMETHING TO CNN ABOUT A VIDEO I SEEN ON FACEBOOK JUST NOW AND HAD TO LOOK IT UP ON YOUTUBE..REALLY DISTURBING AND THIS MOTHER SHOULD BE KNOWN FOR THE COLD HEARTED PERSON SHE IS AND FOR SOMEBODY TO SPEAK FOR THIS INFANT BABY!!!SEARCH ON YOUTUBE "SICK MOTHER BEATING UP 8 MONTH OLD BABY"..I DONT KNOW IF THIS WAS ALREADY REPORTED IN BUT JUST DOING THE RIGHT THING TO STAND UP FOR WHATS RIGHT!!!
STOP.ABUSE!!!!
Out of all the inventions that man has created, the internet is the largest and the least understood. We have become a nation of letter, bleeps and voice messages. Facebook, Twitter and all the rest of the social media contribute nothing to the personal experience or growth of life. Meeting someone face to face has been replaced by keystrokes. I'm old school, I do not have a Facebook or Twitter account and don't want one. I like to speak with voice and shake their hand person to person. Otherwise how do you really get to know them. Good luck to all you Facebookers and Tweeters, your learning nothing about human interaction.
Anticipating in the influx while utilizing social media I have been unable for over a year to get support for Servemi.com. I bought it a couple years ago even though I am poor. I have blogged about it and still maintain a web presence around servemi.com as I seek support and/or someone to take the idea and run.. I am motivated about this because my father a wwII disabled vet and my brother is a disabled Vietnam vet and this gives me a perspective that aims to serve for the better good the needs of our Nation at home, especially since I am now to old to go serve in the military in any capacity.
Knowing our president supports green energy jobs, and that are nation will bare the burden of returning unemployed vets I was motivated by what I saw as an opportunity to benefit the nation/Michigan. Promoting green energy jobs at home and in my case in MI. I have been an advocate for alternative fuel for years. I helped build a bio-d processing plant in MI. Seeing the importance of environmental quality on the Great Lakes to tourism (probably MI's #1 income)is simple to see, and I want to help placement in MI. Technology and skills along with other advances come down from the military, and returning veterans could be a surge in the industry if a focused transition keeps them from being a burden. Any suggestions to a frustrated son of the bloody hundredth who is buried in Arlington National Cem.?

That sounds great! My family wanted me to volunteer at Yeo Su World Expo which will be held beginning May10th and ending in August, S. Korea. However, I could not find any transportation to get myself there (jobless currently and no income or savings! gosh) nor could I think of any place to crash in and sleep! But somehow I'm still in lookout for solution to be there during certain periods of the festivity, look around some exhibitions and take photos of the day.. I think it will be really out of the scope of my imagination to see around at Yeo Su! There will be many cool stuff
