7 foreign policy questions for the candidates at the final presidential debate

Foreign policy becomes the centerpiece for the final U.S. presidential debate next Monday, and iReporters are already telling us what questions they'd like to ask President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney.

With two previous debates behind them and polls putting the candidates in a tight race, both will be looking to score a few weighty punches ahead of Election Day on November 6. They certainly will have much to discuss, from the conflict in Syria, to tensions between Iran and Israel over Iran's nuclear programme to the European financial crisis.

We took a sample of the topics sparking the most interest and debate amongst iReporters, to see what they would ask both the candidates.

1. What will you do if there is a war between Israel and Iran?

iReporter Rick Huffman from Michigan wants to ask both candidates about an issue weighing on his mind: A potential war between Israel and Iran. “I see that it’s going to happen. It’s just a matter of when,” he said. “For me, I have to know what the response will be because it will affect people here and all around. I’d like to know if they would commit entirely, partially or not at all.”

2. How will you safeguard Syria’s chemical weapons?

iReporter Rummel Pinera from the Philippines wanted to know how both candidates would secure Syria’s stockpile of chemical weapons. "It's within the national security interest of the U.S. that such stockpiles of chemical weapons wouldn't fall into the hands of extremist and terrorist groups," he said. "Such an issue should be handled correctly for the safety and security of the American people as well as Arabs."

3. How do you see the U.S.’s role in other nations?

iReporter Harry Hayfield from Wales in the United Kingdom wondered how the candidates see the U.S.'s role in the world and in relation to the United Nations. Because of the ongoing conflict in Syria and concern over Iran's nuclear programme, the issue has become of increasing relevance. "At the moment it's all 'what ifs' about military response," he says. "I want to know whether the decision in 2003 was partisan and whether today it could be non-partisan."

4. How will you limit the impact of another potential European recession on the U.S.?

The repercussions of the European financial crisis continue to spread. iReporter Mark Ivy from Indiana wonders what both candidates would do to to lessen the impact. “What happens in Europe does affect the U.S. and I just wondered if either candidate had a contingency in the event [European] leaders cannot stave off a major recession.” He added, “This issue … has the potential to affect everyone.”

5. How will you help Greece?

Meanwhile in Europe itself, iReporter Marios P. Efthymiopoulos from Greece wanted to know how both candidates would do to help a nation so blighted by the European financial crisis. He also says that Greece and Israel are increasingly aligned and asks both what this would mean for the U.S.’s relations with both countries.

6. How will you help the world’s women?

iReporter Martina Lunardelli from Italy wanted to ask both candidates a question on an issue close to her heart - the rights of women. "There are so many places in the world where we are still persecuted,” she says. “I want to ask if in [their] foreign policy there are resources to pay for help for international women to improve human rights, employment and to eradicate violence and discrimination … in underdeveloped countries.”

7. How will you combat terror?

Independent U.S. voter Beth Alice Barret, a native of the city of New York, is keen to know what the candidates plan to do to ensure the city that suffered the 9/11 attacks – and the rest of the world - is kept safe from future attacks. “Living in NYC, you're constantly reminded of [the attacks] every time you walk outside,” she explained. “Many people worry that a tragic attack will happen again.”

We'll be watching with you, so tune in to the final presidential debate on Monday, October 22 at 9 p.m. ET. What questions on foreign policy would you like to be answered at the debate? Share your questions, or feel free to discuss these questions in the comments below.

Thanks for the inclusion. The other iReporters pose some great questions. Hopefully we will hear answers to these questions during Monday night's foreign policy debate.

Sometimes too much information is a dangerous thing. There are things going on in the secret service community that we cannot be privy to. For instance, what the President told the American people in the rose garden is exactly what the American people needed to know. Any more should be shared with the families of our people who were the victims of the attack. We cannot and should not publicize what methods or plans our Secret Services - CIA, FBI etc. are going to use. The President stated that the act would not go unpunished and we must take him at his word. There was a saying we had during WWII, LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS.

How about reporting about the jobs in Freeport, IL being shipped overseas by Bain capital. The workers there had to train their replacement workers that flew in from China. If jobs and economy is such an important issues, why is CNN not reporting on this, but rather caught up in word symatics on the death of the 4 Americans...if it was called a terror attack or was it terrorism. This comment is from me a Navy Veteran. It seems that CNN is pushing this Libya story without waiting for an answer from a full investigation, which does take time especially when there is not a real central government in that country.

I am John, from the republic of Georgia. It's really shocking to me to see Obama and Romney having equal chances. I believe that Obama is a progressive leader with a clear vision to future. As for Romney, his speech is nothing but a lot of fouls promises concealed with a series of buzz words.

Why not just ask "Okay...you've just lied to the American public about weapons of mass destruction and invaded a country"......"Should you be tried as a war criminal?"

Will you bring pressure to bear on the education and business segments of the USA to move 100% to the metric system? I don't think it is a coincidence that the only two 'western countries' that still use the archaic 'English' system of measurement continue to fall behind other countries in science and math. Of course our kids think Science and Math are hard... they are hard since we burden them with such a nonsensical measurement system. After all you tell me which is easier to use?

1 micron (or micrometer) = 1/1000000th of a meter = 3.93700787 × 10-5 inches

Hmm... so our measurement system's smallest 'unit' is an inch. Then the next biggest one is a foot; which is, of course, 10 inches... right? Oh no... it's 12. Okay then the next largest is a 'yard'. That must be 10 feet right so you can just move the decimal point? Oh no no it's only 3 feet. oohhkayy.. then the next biggest must be 10 yards right? Oh no that one is a mile. Oh then it must be 100 yards? 1000 yards? Nope. It is 1760 yards or 5280 feet... well that's certainly useful and not confusing at all versus 1km = 1000m = 10000cm = 100000mm = 1 10x number of zeros each time down to a micrometer. How about temperature? So Farenheit is based on... what exactly? Nothing really and certainly nothing with any relation to science or the natural world. Celsius is based on 0 being the freezing point and 100 being the boiling point of the substance upon which life is based water.

Pet peeve sorry, but I couldn't resist.

The story about Sensata in Freeport is indeed ignored by CNN.  Disgusting: Bain sold the company to China, forced its workers to train their Chinese replacements before firing them.  This is how Romney and his ilk create jobs?

Hypocrisy: If the President's Family Purchased Voter Machines, the Uproar Would be Deafening

Please note: The following is heavily linked -- in bright orange -- in order to prove this is not an overstatement, hyperbole, or malicious. It's simply factual.

The entire Romney-Ryan campaign stinks of trickery. Tagg Romney, the son of Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, has purchased electronic voting machines that will be used in the 2012 elections in Ohio, Texas, Oklahoma, Washington and Colorado. Our friends at TruthOut did a great write up on this, also showing ties to Bain Capital.

After the second presidential Debate, the room had undecided voters, and the commentator ask for their feedback on the debate.  One of the last, a gentleman stated, that blaming Pres. Obama, for Libya  was no different than trying to blame President Bush for the 911 attacks neither were responsible.  The attack in Libya, came at the anniversary of 9/11, we are fortunate that nothing else happened.  Why is it that the news organizations do not follow up on that undecided voter's comment, why doesn't that have credibility?  Given the riots in Egypt on that anniversary date, the world was in a volatile situation, and it is nearly impossible to monitor the entire world on a particular day.  The fact that real-time unfolding of the events was given to the general public has not been respected.  The expectation that there should be instant answers is unrealistic even with today's modern technology.  My question is this, does the Monday morning quarterbacking and second guessing interfere with our national security, chip away at our credibility with other nations?  In the process of looking for the chip in the President's armor, do we expose our country to unfavorable scrutiny on an international level.  And does the media frenzy make us vulnerable to our enemies.  What should the policies be to follow through when the unexpected happens?  The unexpected happens because we as a country cannot control the world. What processes should be developed for announcing the unexpected and to lay out a timeline on answers.  What should the media expect, and the international community expect in replying back to the general public?  How much information should remain secure and how much information should be exposed to public scrutiny?  Or should all information be exposed and there be no security and no information withheld in volatile international situations, just "put it all out there" for friend and foe alike?

I would ask this of Gov Romney. Mr Romney: You have thrown President Bush under the bus. You have thrown the Republican party under the bus. You have thrown the justice department, the supreme court and American foreign policy under the bus. You have thrown the intelligence community and the office of President of the United States under the bus. Is there anything that you currently like about America?

Another question to both candidates. Even if you win the election, half (+/-) of America voted against you. Disagrees with you. How do you represent them? They are just as important as those that voted for you. You can say you are the president for 100% of the people. It doesn't matter, you do not represent their values.

6 public press conferences...6 references to a video...ZERO reference to what is WAS (a TERRORIST ATTACK).  God forbid anyone should even SUGGEST accountability for misleading the American public in an effort to NOT have a terrorist attack occur on "Obama's watch"   An American Ambassador murdered...there Americans murdered...three embassies burned...and what do we do???? APOLOGIZE AND PANDER for cartoons and videos.  Then we ARREST an American who acted in 100% FULL compliance of the laws and freedoms afforded to us all (you know...those freedoms that HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE DIED FOR...in two major wars?...yes THOSE freedoms), just so we can conveniently TOSS THEM so as to PANDER and APOLOGIZE to a culture that PUBLICLY stones women and hangs gays.  Yes THAT'S a great foreign policy.  How's it workin' thus far?

The Obama administration is a classic “CULT OF PERSONALITY”…. he looks good, promises free stuff (at the expense of OTHERS’ MONEY AND FREEDOMS…all in the name of “fairness” of course) even though HALF the nation disagrees with him. He demonizes (vilifies) the very principles, means, and group that ENGINEERED and EXECUTED  the rise of America (1775-1945)….using a smaller govt.+free market model (you know….that model Liberals say “doesn’t work”?...yes, THAT model ).  The media acts like  a  mob of 14 year old girls at a Justin Bieber concert.   Debates NOW are judged by volume, energy, and childish  two year old kindergarten smirks & gestures….rather than (god forbid) PERFORMANCE RECORDS and REPORT CARDS.  Never before have I ever witnessed   SO MUCH use of DIVISIVE tactics with regard to class, race, and religious warfare….nor have I EVER seen a President take ZERO responsibility for the last 4 years.  Pathetic.

“WE HAVE TWO (2) CAMPS THIS ELECTION:

...[2] CAMP 2 believes those things are NOT rights…in ANY constitution, nor in ANY nation on the planet…for a REASON…never were…never will be.  If they were nothing would get done and everyone would just sit around waiting for others to pay for their entitlements.  They believe $2.1T - $3.8T is imminent failure based on first grade math,  logic, economic laws, Europe, and 4600 years of repeated history.  They KNOW it is just a matter of time before REALITY and MATH catches up…and the “free stuff” mentality WILL come to an end. They KNOW we have to face those realities NOW…not defer them to our kids (and our kids’ kids) just so we can add 30 million MORE people to the “FREE STUFF” list.

Sooner or later reality WILL catch up….and the “free stuff” Socialism movement WILL run out of OTHER people’s money to dole out.  Defer economic laws all you like…sooner or later your entitlements WILL run out of money.

Some questions that I would want to ask is to Obama.  How is it that we had a drone in the sky watching the embassy being attacked and you and your administration still would not call it a terriost act for over a week.  Second question, with the passing of Obamacare my insurance premium has risen by over $50 per week with the benefits being reduced.  How can you say that this will not cause an increase to people who have private insurance.  Third question, your EPA department has increased regulations that are killing our economy by discouraging businesses from building power plants, refineries, etc.  Is it still your intent (as stated in the last election cycle) to "bankrupt any business that wants to build a coal fired power plant"?

The question I'd like to hear would come from Romney, and be addressed to Americans -

"Government mandates on individuals, punitive taxes, more regulations, bigger government, and chipping away from the U. S. Constitution. These are radical changes away from the principles upon which America was founded, and the principles upon which America and Americans have grown and thrived.

Are you happy with the direction this country, this government is taking under this administration? If not, then you must vote to protect that vision, and that direction that the our founding fathers fought, and died to establish and to pass on to future generations. Vote to preserve American core principles and values. The differences are clear, and the paths are quite different. This election may represent the greatest challenge the American Constitution and American values have ever faced.

I think that foreign policies should be a 2d priority all together. First focus on the domestic policies, and I would put "income distribution" on top of the list. How does the president fight poverty and make sure hard working people indeed get a good slice of prosperity (there are people working 3 jobs, 16 hours a day and can barely pay for the groceries!). What about price levels? How does everybody get access to good college education? The US right now is an "every man for himself" society.

Questions 3, 6 and 7 are broad and require longer to answer than any hour or so debate format could possibly manage. Honestly, for all the preparation of the debate, can't the moderators see to it that questions fit the format?

The very thought that Romney and Ryan even stand a chance of winning the election is unbelievable to me. They have been so tricky and shady. Not to mention manipulative. I see donald Trump in a lot of the propaganda. The entire party is now trying to make it appear that "Romnesia" is a childish act of the Democrats when they have been chanting "Obamacare" now for years. It's okay though because Obama does care, the reason he is the wonderful president that he is. The republicans stoop to childish acts when they don't get their way, of accusing the media of playing favorites to Obama so they can put the media on the defensive and put them in a position of feeling they aren't being as fair to them. This is simply so they might gain control and sympathy. Watch Mitt bat his eye lashes tonight. Mitt is not used to being challedged, the reason he basically threw a temper trantrum when he was properly challeged for his lies by the president. This man, Romney, has denied almost every policy he said he stood for over the many, many years. He is clearly trying to trick voters into thinking his policies have changed. If he is so used to doing things his way and not being challedged, he will do the same as president. Basically Donald Trump and other billionaires like him will be your president, and they care about themselves and paying as little taxes as possible.

What they are not talking about is the many American people who are going into business for themselves, mostly in real-estate and government programs such as childcare, medical transportation and many others. Many people who aren't looking for work are building their business. Donald Trump and others like him, are used to having control over the business mainstream and are no longer in complete control. I believe that it is wonderful that Americans and non-Americans are able to flourish and grow business and provide employment for others while eliminating the wealthy middle man who uses his front-men and clients to gain money from the government such as with the section-8 program and the like. Americans don't want to go backward and that's were the Romney/Ryan ticket will take you. The president is doing a great job, let him finish what he has started. Mitt and Mrs. Romney have yet to show the tax records. The republicans say Americans don't care about their tax returns. I'm an American and I care. Before he can critiscize our president he should do what all the others before him that wanted the job, freely did.

Mr Obama when Iran attacks Israel will you call it an act of War or act of Terror? Will you come to their aid? Or will you blow if off for fundraiser and call it "domestic violence"

Mr. Obama, that has helped us through this crisis, not just the economy but overseas. I have a very serious question for you. My question is this: why is it that us low warning Americans, never get loans even when we could pay them, but are always denied. My family, lived, struggled, and clawed out way to where we ar at (and that's not much). I don't believe that $40,000 makes me a millionaire, but I will tell you this; because I didn't choose to go into debit, I'm doing exceptional, so my real question is where are you going to benifit me, other than those what live in debit. Have I not shown myself as being better? Have I not shown must as following god? Where is my benifit? I have five kids.

This question is for President Obama and for Bill Clinton as well.

I see a blind focus on China in the presidential debates, and wonder why not a word is said about Japan? What's Obama and Romney's take on:

1) The recent acquisition of Sprint by Japan's SoftBank

2) The domination of America's consumer manufacturing sector by Japanese companies like Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Sanyo, Nikon and so on.

3) Japanese companies even having become part of our cultural experience, with a "Sony Pictures Presents" before so many films we watch.

By manipulating their currency, Japanese business has been more far more successful than any other country in unfairly capturing a large, strategic sectors of America's economic life. The Japanese cars, computers, TVs, sound systems, cameras and camcorders, etc. are the evidence on the ground, I wonder, if the need to compete with Japanese business is the reason American business has been driven to outsourcing?

Voters are longing to see jobs brought back to America. We expect our national leaders to have a clear insight into the major sources of our current problems. I hope to ring a bell, such that we will not unwisely focus on a developing country producing low end products, while we disregard the real threats to our future, and leave them unaddressed before the election.

How do you raise the yuan without creating massive inflation for the US?

Here are my thoughts

1. What will you do if there is a war between Israel and Iran?

If Obama elected: I will be in middle of sea on my anchored sailing boat for safety of my life.

If Romney elected: I will be in safely in Texas

2. How will you safeguard Syria’s chemical weapons?

If Obama elected:  He would react after one of the chemical weapon used.

If Romney elected: First thing he would do is destroy them by drones with the help of rebels.

3. How do you see the U.S.’s role in other nations?

If Obama elected: He would make another world tour apologizing for US

If Romney elected: Other nations will respect USA and play by rules.

4. How will you limit the impact of another potential European recession on the U.S.?

If Obama elected: Continue what was done in last 4 years.

If Romney elected: Make dollar strong, closely monitor and work with European Union .

5. How will you help Greece?

If Obama elected:  Continue seeing them collapse further

If Romney elected:  Help them baling out by talking to other European countries and talk to Germany to build Greece economy.

6. How will you help the world’s women?

If Obama elected: Remember them again in 2014 for senate elections

If Romney elected: Provide more employment, increase min. wages, help self-employed.

7. How will you combat terror?

If Obama elected: He would do same as what he did in last 4years, terrorist would be happy again.

If Romney elected:  Gitmo will be active, he would work closely with allies with accountability, and domestically shot at sight.

Just looking at both of them last night, 3rd debate, I got the impression that Gov.Romney is of another bygone generation, and his thinking and theatrics belong to that era too. Some years ago Tom Friedman let us all in on the idea that the world is flat, information and communication technologies at the speed of light, iPhone included make it so. Obama seems comfortable to embrace this concept much more readily than Mitt. I think the philosophical concept is called Cosmopolitanism. We want plurality to flourish in the world and 21st century wants America to value and protect (and perhaps enhance)all cultures and customs across the globe. 21st century American values want diversity, and not force cultures, especially the great civilizations in the old world, to follow American culture, rules and values. This view seems to fall flat on its face with the way Mitt and Paul and the GOP have been handling talk of global issues, especially American foreign policy. But, as a nation, American history shows that we promote diversity all over the world, and so Obama seems to be a natural as commander-in-chief. It appears to me that the torch has been passed to a new generation of worldly-wise leaders, who are comfortable in DC or in Jakarta, Hawaii or Africa. POTUS hails from that new generation. The GOP of the older generation has no choice but to change guard, prepare and field younger worldly savvy and sensitive candidates who look to the future with a shared global agenda, be it trade or climate change. POTUS did not apologize to nations on his inaugural trip. On the contrary, I think he drove home the same cosmopolitan agenda. And good to remember that he won the Nobel for it ! In case we forgot, Mitt was sitting across a Nobel Laureate last evening. Rest assured that our POTUS is a Nobel winner and a constitutional lawyer, of Harvard Law Review fame(or notoriety, as you wish), so please, please cut him some slack when events transpire that appear to go south under his watch. One other thing: Mitt seems to sway with opinions and flip flops on almost all issues, not just this once but throughout the three debates, in fact throughout the campaign(great strategy for dodging debate issues) but how would he deal with crisis after crisis that is bound to ratchet up a few notches at the White House if we have a switch of guard in these most testing, horrible, tumultuous times ?....with a badly splintered GOP to back him up ? ...that Mitt seems to have turned 180 on lately? Lot of questions about Mitt, including taxes, but maybe his work and missionary zeal in this election season is to bring GOP back to the middle, eject all those extremists, and by 2016 they will be able to field a younger, moderate candidate from the new generation of leaders, perhaps ? Maybe Paul Ryan would have gotten over Ayn Rand's puerile thoughts  and become more accurate in budget forecasting by then ? Oh, and that defense budget, I think POTUS will find a fix, once election is over, but then again he is right, the battle has moved on from ground to sea to air and is now being waged in space...satellites and drones and cyberwar….in progress, folks ! Ships simply won't cut it anymore ! And just a word about the economy..Mitt and Paul don't have clue that we are now fully plunged into a world economy with new structures emerging and that we must use all our prowess to get out of the doldrums and seize the day. Everyone including Europe and China know that US has to lead the world, and the way to do that is through stimulus. The austerity myth is done for, even the smart Queen of England shunned Cameron's myth and put up an exquisite Jubilee ! Time to act, and as Krugman and Stiglitz have attested time and again, this is not the time for austerity and political games but for substantial injection of government capital. I suspect all this will transpire once we are over this November 6th hump...not too long to wait, I suppose ?!

My problem with Rodney is that he talks about the economy but he takes no responsibility of the fact that the Republicans got us into this mess.  I can't see how his even running this close to Obama.  It will take Rodney four years just to get up to speed with the complex flow the world's crisis.  We are in a crucial time and for us to change leadership now would be foolish.  This is a country of Whites, Black,Spanish, Asia etc. I think we are past the level that we vote according to the race.  This country has shown that we can go from slavery to a judgement of our hearts. Let's vote that way and let us not be clouded by changing promises.  Think about it.  Iran is close to the bomb. Let our President finish his job.  Make this decision based on what is best for our country.

Since all national news agencies must have a FCC license to broadcast our national news, by law they must report the truth, and report national security threats which 4 out of 5 national news companies refuse to do. This is harmful and influences Americans into false national security and false scense of leadership. One should compare Hitlers successful propaganda machine during WW ll and to our current news media today on national tv. Post the historical truth here.
