    Fireworks Over the Nation's Capital

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Neal Piper took these photos of fireworks over the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Memorial and the Capitol during this year's July 4th.

"During some of the shots I kept the shutter open for several minutes and used black foam to cover the lens between fireworks. This allows multiple fireworks to enter the frame without overexposing the shot," 33-year-old Neil explains. He says that thousands of people were laying out on blankets, having picnics and waiting for the firework show to start.

"It's a good holiday to enjoy time with friends and family and appreciate everything the USA has to offer," he says.

I took these photos from the Hiroshima Memorial which overlook the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and the Capital.  It is one of the best places in the city to see the fireworks on July 4th.

I used a Canon 5D Mark III with a 200mm lens on a tripod.  I set the aperture to 11 and ISO to 100 and put the camera in bulb mode.  I then pressed the remote shutter release as the fireworks were being shot into the air then closed the shutter as the firework dissipated and smoke started to form.  During some of the shots I kept the shutter open for several minutes and used black foam to cover the lens between fireworks.  This allows multiple fireworks to enter the frame without overexposing the shot.
