Douglas County Nevada wildfire grows to 2,000 acres

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     DesertFog photographed wildfires in Douglas County, Nevada, on July 5. He says the wildfire has now consumed 7,000 acres and it is listed as 20 percent contained, according to the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. 'My home is 8 miles from the fire. The hills in the area of the fire have been prone to wildfires... for the past several years. It would have been more unusual had a fire not started from the lightning,' he said.
    - Jareen, CNN iReport producer

Friday July 5 saw the Bison fire grow to 2,000 acres with very active fire behavior. The fire crested the Pine Nut mountains and is now established and burning on both sides of the range. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office and the East Fork Fire Protection District implemented evacuation operations and structure protection.

The number of personnel working this fire has almost doubled from yesterday with 405 command staff and personnel currently assigned. A base of operations has been established 4 miles from the fire at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Today also saw a very aggressive air attack on the fire with 5 air tankers and 3 helicopters.

Yesterday the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center provided an estimate for control and containment for July 7. That date has been removed and there is no new date for containment listed. The fire is reported to be 20 percent contained.

The Bison fire will transition to a Type 3 Incident Management Team this morning at 6 a.m. and then transition to a Type 2 Incident Management Team in the evening at 6 p.m.

Briefing information was provided by Elayn Briggs, Center Information Officer, with the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center July 5 at 5:22 p.m.
