What to tell black children after Zimmerman verdict

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     drthema checked Twitter after the Zimmerman verdict was announced on July 13 and saw a similar question asked over and over: how do I explain this to my child? "I always try to think as a psychologist, what can I contribute to the situation?" she says. After talking with her husband, she decided to help answer that question, using her smartphone to record a video around 11 p.m. in Los Angeles, California.

Dr. Thema responds with advice for parents who are upset about the Zimmerman verdict and who have asked on social media what message they should give their children. As a psychologist, Dr. Thema tackles in this brief ireport three key messages related to parenting as it relates to race. The first is that diversity is a positive factor, the second is that injustice is a reality, and the third is that we can all work together to make progress.
