New Mexico Department of Human Services Devastates Behavioral Health

The New Mexico Department of Human Services announced in an unprecedented move on Wednesday that they intended to close down the 15 behavioral and mental health agencies that provide 85% of the mental health services to the state and transition them to the oversight of Arizona companies.

The move was spurned by a secretive audit conducted by the private Public Consulting Group of Boston. The audit, which purportedly found credible allegations of fraud in all 15 agencies triggered an immediate freeze in state and federal funding for the agencies. The freeze has forced them to consider furloughs and eventual closure, leaving thousands of mental health patients without medication or therapy services.

The audit results were received a month after the state signed contracts with 5 Arizona companies valuing over $15 million to take over services.

Secretary of Human Services and Governor Suzanna Martinez's office have so far refused to release the audit to any of the accused parties or other state and federal entities that have requested to see it.
