Titan Arum, the largest known unbranched inflorescence in the world, is in bloom

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     pipedog snapped this photo of the Titan Arum, or 'corpse flower,' in rare bloom at the Botanical Gardens in Washington on July 22. He says tens of thousands of people come to Washington specifically to catch the flower at this special time. 'It's pretty newsworthy considering that it can take years to decades for the plant to bloom and it only lasts for 24-48 hours,' he says. He says the best description of the flower's legendarily rotten smell is 'like a decomposing animal that has died on the side of the road.' He says, 'When I was there, the smell was faint but it was definitely present.'

The Titan Arum is the largest known unbranched inflorescence in the world and is in bloom at the Botanical Gardens in DC today. The time between flowering can take years to decades and the bloom only lasts for 24-48 hours. It is know as the corpse flower as it smells like rotting flesh. Pretty awesome to see it in person!
