    The Alien's Mailbox

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     DesertFog snapped photos of this legendary mailbox along Nevada State Route 375 in Rachel, Nevada, near the storied Area 51. He says: 'When I arrived at the mailbox that day in September 2011, I was the only one around for miles. I spent a lot of time walking around the mailbox noting the stickers, autographs and warnings written by people over the years. The dirt road that lead off in the distance to Groom Lake and Area 51 looked very inviting. But I thought it best to stick with the mailbox and not push my luck going toward the base.'
    - jccarp, CNN iReport producer

The famous "Black Mailbox" which is actually white is located on a very lonely stretch of Nevada State Route 375. It has long been battered by time and harsh desert weather. It is adjacent to the Nellis Air Force Range and Tikaboo Valley which is home to the even more famous Groom Lake and Area 51.

It was long believed that this was the mailbox for Area 51 and besides serving as a United States post office mail drop it was the gathering point for people from all over the world coming to try to catch a glimpse of secret government projects and extraterrestrial activity.

Contrary to the more popular story the mailbox reportedly belongs to a local rancher. People visiting the mailbox hoping to see something unusual have left their mark in the way of stickers, autographs and even warnings.
