August 6 - National Oyster Day
There has been no actual documentation when oyster was officially declared but giving the oyster its own day is very fitting for such a popular and edible staple. The oyster has been a known delicacy for thousands of years. Aside from food, some oysters produce pearls used for jewelry. They are fished, cultivated and produced in various methods. They are served “fresh;” meaning, they are cooked or eaten alive. These creatures don’t complain and some say they don’t feel anything. For such humble organisms who contribute so much, they deserve the v.i.p treatment. Maybe it will be nice to have oyster awareness instead of eating them on this day.
