Sexism claims resurface as Elks charter is revoked
By Andra Lim
The former leader of the Austin Elks filed a lawsuit Monday saying that members of the group conspired to shutter the Lodge so they could sell it and use the profits to start a new one.
Nataysha Doyel, who stepped into the position of Exalted Ruler at the Austin Lodge in early July, group member Scott Carson Wilbeck and other Elks members are suing the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, along with Charles Williams, the state sponsor of the Austin Lodge, and William Hart, a member of the Lodge.
A week ago, the national Elks organization closed the Lodge at 700 Dawson Road for violating Elks rules by failing to submit financial documents on time and failing to properly insure the property, after being on probation for at least a year. Ownership of the Lodge, worth about $4 million, was turned over to three trustees.
In their suit, Doyel and Wilbeck ask that the property be returned to them and that the court place an injunction on any action regarding the property, including its sale.
The suit says that Williams and Hart committed “an ongoing and systematic fraud” by secretly planning for the Lodge’s closure, while falsely telling members the Lodge could remain open if it improved during the probationary period.
The suit also says Doyel faced gender discrimination from the Elks, noting that the Austin Lodge has only gotten in trouble with the national organization when a woman has been in charge.
Doyel also said sexism was behind the Lodge’s closure last week, a claim that a national Elks spokesman called “ludicrous.”
The trial for the so called as the National Organization, we are no longer Elks as of right now due to our Charter has been pulled. We Unaffilliated Elks of Austin #201 are having our trial this Saturday October 5,2013 9:00 A,M. It sure would be interesting for CNN to come to Austin, Tx 700 Dawson Rd. To really see how an Elks trial is really held. Are these really honest trial? Who knows? Are they truthful who knows? We supeanod 38 people and the majority were denied. Is this really going to be an honest trial? If CNN reall wants to know what goes on with the National Elks Organization this is the place to be. We have 460 members, 60 members waiting to become members that have paid their application fees. We have been at this locations for over 58 years. That's just at this location here in Austin, Tx. The heads of Nationals will not be coming to Austin for this Trial. We are told they already have there minds made up. What does that tell you. Ask the National Organization how many Elks Lodges they have closed down within the past few months, then years. Then ask them how much money have they lost!!!
