Life with Down syndrome |
My beautiful daughter
I am a single mother raising my 14 year old daughter who has down syndrome. My daughter was born in San Diego, but we moved to Wisconsin when my daughter was only 6 months old. I was married at the time and we moved here to raise our daughter in a smaller community with better education and to be closer to my family. My husband and I separated when my daughter was just over 1 year old and he moved back to San Diego. He is not a part of my daughter's life at all and the last time he saw her was when sje was 3 years old. We now live in Verona, Wi which is a suburb just outside of Madison. We love it here. My daughter is very active and loves lots of things that other teenagers do like Hannah Montana, High School Musical, popular music, and she LOVES all kinds of sports. We watch football togethere every weekend and she likes bull riding, tennis, gymnastics, ice skating, and basketball too. She takes swimming lessons every week. She is also very involved in a special needs cheerleading program that practices weekly and goes to cheer competitions several times a year. One big challenge that we face is finding child care. Most home and center based child care centers are not equipped to take care of a child with special needs. Also most child care centers have age limits of 12 or 13. Although most children of this age can take care of themselves and stay home alone after school; most children with special needs still need someone to supervise them. We have had no child care since 2005. I think that our story is unique and would be great to feature. Please let me know if you need anything else from us, thank you.
