Lunch with Arnold the Tortoise
Arnold enjoys his chilled salads as shown on a typical summer day. Arnold wakes up sometime between 9-11am & goes outside to spend the day lounging in the sun & shade. He has been a part of our family for over 40 years & will live much longer than we will. We have made arrangements with a dear friend to continue his care (together with our other Tortoise Son, Wilson (Wil). Wil arrived in the middle of our very long uphill driveway last fall (October) and had been very abused. He and Arnold have never met, as they would most likely not get along & we don't want to take that chance. My husband has made them each a nice safe fenced yard with daytime shelter as they both sleep inside our home at night. The nights are NOT kind to small animals in the desert. Arnold was attacked by 2 Raccoons when we first moved here so we abandoned his newly built block home for the safety of a bedroom closet at night. When Wil arrived last fall he was Very small & not long for this world I think. The photos included are of Wil & Big Mama, who he seems to love (yeah). He's very small & his legs & arms are very thin, not "meaty" like Arnold. Wil eats like a Mad Man...comes literally Running when the salad arrives...I'll take his weight just before he goes to sleep for the winter & see how much he has gained during this summer!! Wil had been chewed up all over his back & stomach & his 'head rest' completely chewed off when he arrived at our home last fall. We quickly began to feed him & try & fatten him up a bit for the long winter sleep! Needless to say, he will NOT spend another night outside! Wil too now has his own closet with a little 'sleeping hut' inside our home. They will both sleep through the winter & into the late spring in their own closets. They are both very sweet, smart critters & we are blessed to have them in our lives.
