Waste Management of Iowa and the Iowa State Fair Work to Set New Recycling Record
“We increased total recycling at the event by more than 150 percent in 2012, and our goal is to exceed that number in 2013,” said Waste Management of Iowa spokesperson, Lisa Disbrow. “The steady increase in recycling numbers at the state fair is a great testament to the commitment Iowa and its citizens have to improving the environment.”
In addition to providing recycling containers, Waste Management of Iowa and Keep Iowa Beautiful have partnered together for the past ten years to help maintain litter-free grounds for the Iowa State Fair. Throughout the Fair, taking place August 8-18, Waste Management crews will remove the recycled material from the Fairgrounds and transport it to a local recycling facility.
Initiatives to increase recycling this year include a new educational program targeting the more than 700 campers at the fair. The program will highlight the recycling containers available in the campgrounds and provide information about what materials are acceptable in those containers. Vendors and concessions stands will be green again this year. Cardboard will be collected twice a day from concession stands, and recycling containers will be placed near vendor storage areas.
