Seattle pummeled by severe electrical storm

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     timdphotos says it was around 10 at night when he first saw the telltale signs of a lightning storm heading to Seattle, Washington, on August 9. He captured the photos in one of Seattle's most famous parks, Kerry Park in the Queen Anne neighborhood. 'The lightning was intense and only grew stronger as it approached downtown, and all of us photographers stood and watched in amazement. I stayed out in the rain for about 90 minutes until my camera, my clothes and my best friend were soaked,' he said. His second image was featured as CNN's Travel Photo of the Day for January 28, 2014.

It isn't often that the city affectionately referred to as the "Emerald City" is hammered by intense thunderstorms, but when it does - it truly is electric!

For almost 2 hours the entire Puget Sound Basin was rocked by thunder, lightning and of course - lots of rain. As much of the city slept, or at least tried to, the diehard weather fanatics and late night revelers gathered at the Kerry Park in the Queen Anne neighborhood to watch the show.

Several lightning strikes were caught on camera though no injuries or major power outages were reported.
