    Dragon Con 2013

    More from zenthea

    I'm never growing up!

I am not the typical person that is profiled at a con. I am a female and 56 years old. I have made costume for many years: Halloween costumes for my children, for show in High School and college, local theater groups, my daughter's dance studio But not any for myself. Last year, my daughter talked me into coming to Dragoncon 2012. I made one costume for myself by upcycling stuff from Goodwill, used my son's Star wars costume, and used a dress from the 1950 my mom had made and became a Stepford wife. I had the time of my life! After Dragoncon 2012, I noticed a SteamPunk Disney at Dragoncon page. My daughter is into steampunk, so I know something about it and have done costumes for her in the past. My costume mash up is a Steampunk Yzma from the movie "The Emperor's New Groove". So there is my twist.

When I found the Steampunk Disney group, most of the major villians has been picked. I picked Yzma as I had been an exchange student ito Lima,Peru in the 70's and I knew I could use some of the items I got in Peru with the costume.I kept Yzma's main colors of purple and black.  I feel Yzma thinks she is still a sexy thing, so instead of a long bustle skirt, I went with a short sassy one. I added heeled ankle boots plus purple hose with spider hose over them to signify she is a witch. I kept the turban and the long purple feather but mashed them together. On the suggestion of the Steampunk Disney group, I have a bird cage with a llama inside to give a visual clue for my character.

I have fallen in love with cosplay as a way to step outside my normal world. Beside it is something that I can do with my kids, 21 and 23. How many things are there in this world  you can do at 56 with twenty-somethings?
