This iReport is part of an assignment:
Your views of space and stars
Perseid meteors, lighting and sprites!
- hhanks, CNN iReport producer
Right now Earth is rushing through a large cloud of dust left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle. As a result the night skies are filling with meteors! On the night of Aug 8th I set up my meteor cameras and cast my net. By the next morning I'd caught quite a haul. The sky put on a great show with lightning, Sprites (a high atmosphere form of electrical discharge) and loads of Perseid Meteors!
I combined each capture into a time lapse of the entire night. It starts out with some thunderstorms lighting up the night and then a few dancing sprites appear as wispy columns of light and finally culminates in a show of meteors flashing across the sky after midnight!
The frames are timestamped at the bottom by the capture time in GMT.
I hope you enjoy the show!
