On Thursday, August 15, 2013, over one-hundred accordionists of all ages assembled at Bryant Park in New York City to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the American Accordionists’ Association.

Frank Busso, one of the organizers of the group’s festivities explained that the official anniversary of the group falls in March. “But we always celebrate in Bryant Park in July”, he explained. “This year we are celebrating in August because many members had to attend competitions in July.” Told that the weather was certainly cooperating as this was one of the nicest days all summer and July had been especially hot, Mr. Busso good humouredly replied, “God loves accordionists!”

Sporting a bright red Association anniversary tee-shirt and more enthusiasm than seen in men half his age, Mr. Busso led the American accordionists in a rousing version of New York, New York. “Let’s play so they can hear us across the street”, he extolled the members on their second take. They did, and pedestrians were pleased.

There were a surprising number of very young accordionists in the group. Once thought of as a nerdy, or ‘old fashioned’ instrument, the accordion has made a comeback with the younger generation’s interest in big band era hot jazz.

Also in attendance at the celebration were accordionists from Germany and Norway. The rest of the festivities, billed as ‘Accordions Around The World’ will continue every Thursday until August 29th at Bryant Park.
