This iReport is part of an assignment:
Everyday racism: Your stories
Guess Who's Coming to Assess the House?
Result of the appeal: he refused to budge and stood by his lowball assessment.
Fortunately, our lending officer acknowledged the we should get another appraisal. This time, my husband went off to a cafe while I, the white lady, showed the new guy around. What a different story: the new appraisal value came in at $300,000.
Follow up: we filed a complaint with the state appraisal board, and the original guy filed a counter complaint against the second appraiser. As my husband said, "If it doesn't make sense, and you can't see any possible rational reason, it's probably racism ... because racism isn't rational."
