This iReport is part of an assignment:
Life in the early 1980s: Style and politics
i graduated from High School in 1980. It seems like centuries have passed!
When I think of 1980 - I recall the last few months of High School - no political thoughts,really..but I did read the newspaper every day. I had joined the Air Force with the Delayed Entry program and was scheduled to begin Basic Training October of that year. I had tested very well and my Recruiter was impressed. Taking the Oath was the scariest thing I had ever done. The line "...defending the United States of America against all enemies Foreign or Domestic.." was like a thunderbolt of reality. The Soviet Union was our boogeyman those days and it was all I began to think about. What if there were a war? Where would I be? Could I actually kill someone under those kinds of circumstances? Would the uniform look good? Would I have to cut my hair?
Sad to say that I did not serve. I had taken the Oath in February and before that October - I had changed my mind. Some stupid boy begged me not to go..and Uncle Sam let me out of it. I was 17 when I made that commitment and it was one I regret not fulfilling. My parents were pretty upset. My recruiter was beyond angry. Selective Service in those days - very different than today. But had I gone, I wouldn't have my boy Benjamin..who is the center of my universe and who keeps me grounded.
My style in the early 80's was pretty casual. I didn't rock the big hair look and never used hair spray at all. Zipping around town in my "Jennifer Blue" Camaro I listened to Pat Benatar, The B52'S and Fleetwood Mac. Political conversations went on at home but I rarely contributed to the discussion.
After my son was born in 1986 - all that changed. I realized that while I had always paid attention to the news - I needed to do more. Voting became a priority and knowing who I was voting for or against was important. But still, I was pretty quiet about it.
That sure changed when iReports came along!
