This iReport is part of an assignment:
Life in the early 1980s: Style and politics
Someone I once was.
Well, that's how I feel about my life in the early 1980s.
I actually started as a police reserve in 1979 and then in the Fall of 1980 I went through the police academy. I started work after graduation, which was in December.
The picture I posted was taken shortly after I started for the Bangor(Michigan) police department. I'm the guy in the upper right, dark hair and 31 years of age. Many of the others pictured are now dead.
I wrote of those days and nights. It's all in my book, Dreams In Blue: The Real Police.
It's just memories now and it's as if someone else lived it. I had a love/hate relationship with the career. I feel I did a lot of good, but also made many mistakes.
Now it's just memories for an aging man.
